this episode subverted all expectations and was a beautiful self contained love story and also a positive and hopeful allusion to Joel and Ellie's relationship to come. perfection.
This episode broke me😭. Their chemistry was so good
Speaking as a HUGE game fan, I actually loved this deviation from the original story - because I think it retained most of the essential elements needed, while giving us a much richer and more emotional story to experience. We still get to enjoy "grumpy survivalist Bill" (just in a slightly different context), and the original game also suggested that Bill was gay, and that he and Frank had been in a relationship together before it went sour.
But maybe most importantly, this version still provides what it needs to for Joel's journey and growth: an outside perspective on loneliness vs. sharing your life. It's just that in this version, the lesson comes from the opposite angle: instead of Bill serving as a cautionary warning about how isolation and loneliness can destroy you, Bill serves as an example of how vulnerability and companionship can save you. Either way, Joel comes away from this chapter with a slightly improved willingness to stick with Ellie and open up to her.
This was the biggest and most significant deviation from the game thus far. And as someone who is also a huge fan of both games, it was an excellent decision.
Beautiful summary. I didn't think they could deviate from the game's lore and still deliver a great story, given past adaptation examples, but boy was this better. Really amazing writing.

I get why they changed the chapter of Bill cause in the game it's basically a glorified fetch quest for the truck battery. Sure there are some neat interactions with Bill but other than that it was mostly a gameplay segment. To adapt that into a TV episode would've been very difficult to make it compelling. So i like where they took Bill & Frank making it hopeful & beautiful in a world devoid of that.
Yes, exactly this! While Ellie's sassy banter with Bill was amusing, and their encounter with the clickers and bloater was thrilling, and Bill's discovery of Frank's body was emotional, that's still only like 20-30 minutes of story content MAXIMUM. Not nearly enough for a full-fledged episode without it feeling padded or over-stretched. So I think a bigger deviation was a brilliant and gutsy move.
I'm so glad Achara basically said you can still be a "Man's Man" and still be gay, because being gay doesn't just look like 1 type of way, it's a spectrum.
And this episode I don't even look at like it's a gay story, this is just two people who fell in love during the end of the world.
Frank was making a painting of Bill which was incomplete , but at the end when the shot pulls in the window there is a picture of Bill on the wall.
As a fan of the game I loved this episode. However, I wished there was some interaction between Ellie and bill.
The open window at the end is also a reference to the title screen of the game.

The only thing we miss out on with the change from the game is Ellie's and Bill's interactions together which were awesome. That gave Bill a happier ending in the show. He was a super miserable man in the game whose partner killed himself. In the show, he was able to be happy before his demise. That was special.
Most of Bill's story is told through gameplay, like trying to survive his traps and get the battery in his town, this wouldn't translate to the series quite so well, in the end he still got his car and has to take Ellie to his brother just like the game, but we had a beautiful love story, seen Bill being a survivalist and got a way better end for him than the game.

It didn't actually deviate all that much when you think about it.. They got the battery/the car, and we got to experience Bill and Franks story through a backstory.. And since we don't ever see Bill ever again, I think this works amazingly. I love both of the games, but I felt this gave us so much more.. The game hinted their relationship through dialogue and the environment, we all knew they were a gay couple who got into an argument. The games acting is perfect, so we don't need a 1 for 1 each time in every scene.
I don't want each episode to be running from the infected and bandits, since that's gameplay not story.
What a beautiful story, the writing on this show is top notch. Never teared up as much as I did this series, so great

Here's how I find this change from the game even more beautiful than most realize, warning for game spoilers in-case anyone cares.
Bill in the game is angry and in a tragic kind of state, especially with the context of Frank and the letter. But that shows Joel of what NOT to be like, and therefor he starts warming up to Ellie and letting himself care for someone again. But in this show, the letter left by Bill instead shows Joel what to be like. Find someone worth fighting for, do it all cost and most importantly let yourself feel something again. It's the same people involved and it happens very differently... but the result is very much the same.

Jaby - It's a tv series at the end of the day. They have to make it as compelling as they can. I think the story can play out without Bill as well. And that episode 'the love story of Bill and Frank' is one of the saddest tv episode in forever. Just brilliant acting and story telling!

I was pleasantly surprised with this episode !! It was so beautifully shot and was so powerful.. !! in the game , you get to see Bill as this grumpy guy… but in this episode they showed his past and it was so well executed .. both Bill and Frank’s acting is great.. great direction , great acting by both the actors .. !!! And Personally I felt so good that we are getting to see the parts that were not in the game..

I liked it, but I also miss the interactions between Bill & Ellie and the magazine scene at the end. I hope they shove that very iconic scene in somewhere that they have skipped here though. It's like the Joel & Ellie relationship lags a little bit behind the game at the moment. Love the second space reference though, can't wait for the museum when they do Part 2. The capsule was one of my favorite moments of it.
You kinda spoiled Riley here though.
I get the feeling that scene will come at the beginning of the next episode, cuz seems like a good way to transition into next story beat

Really the only complaint i have, is the show seems to run a little slow for me, every episode it seems like there really taking there time getting to a conclusion.. maybe it's longer shots, maybe it's to much staring into the distance, but everything seems to stay just a little to long..

(Jus’ kidding) Btw it did went down totally different way ,I’m a little mad at HBO cause when you deviate from the source material ,when you don’t be faithful to the original source material ,we all know what happens and happened with Game of thrones ,with Velma ,things are good in the start then they slowly starts to deviate and the end result is just horrendous ,how ever I’m not complaining they deviated but something beautiful came out of it ,my only argument is tho the whole Jole ,Elle and Bill part in the game it self is a quest which when you play it like to enjoy it and not to speed run it ,its like half a month long quest ,the venture to the school finding the truck but not the battery finding franks ded body ,can’t say more but it in it self is like half a month quest and they introduced both of them just to kill them in the same episode that just a bit stu?id.

Almost a complete 180 difference of not only Bill's character arc but also Frank's (they ended up badly and way more depressing) from the video game that not only hits completely different emotional beats it also retains the emotional AND plot elements necessary for Joel's growth and the overall story continuation. I think the only thing that was missing was Bill and Ellie interacting. If I wanted I complete 1 to 1 copy & paste adaptation, I would just play the game again at that point lol

As someone who has played the game multiple times, this one was very very disappointing. Specially after the first two episodes which were so on point.
The only reason I can think why they have gone this route is to save on VFX.
In the game, Joel gets trapped in one of Bill’s trap while looking for him. And it’s bill who finds Joel, not the other way round (It just isn’t believable that Bill manages to stay in one place throughout for so long. That too in a well kept house.
In game, when they finally get to chat, Bill complains about carrying someone else’s (Frank) responsibility and mocks Joel for looking after Ellie. He even gets mad at Ellie multiple times for being immature.
After that Joel mentions wanting a car at which point Bill mocks him again for thinking it’s readily available. They eventually decide to fetch car parts and fix one up.
They decide to get the battery from a recently attacked military car (Again this makes more sense as opposed to a regular person having access to a car 20 years into an apocalypse) but when they reach the car they find the battery missing. Instead they get attacked by a bunch of infected. This is also where we see a bloater for the first time (stage 3 infected)
After finally managing to get rid of the infected they find Frank’s body which Bill recognises from his cloths. He shows no remorse beyond a point about abandoning him. In fact he figures that it is Frank who had taken the battery from the millitary car and gets agitated further.
Even that car needs a jump start and we have to fight a group of infected again while we do that.
This entire portion has been skipped and has been replaced by overextended and partially unnecessary romantic content.

I will be honest, this episode was great but I have not played the game so I have no idea who Nick Offerman's character was. Keeping that in mind this episode felt more like a filler episode and despite having a great writing it takes you away from what happened in episode 2. Now it gives depth to a game character but at the same time takes you away from the existing storyline. Joel's girlfriend died and rather than seeing Joel dealing with it we saw 2 new men and life in apocalypse. It was great episode nonetheless
I'm not gonna move forward with this show now..

Easily one of the most underwhelming episodes. I wish they would've stuck to the original way Bill finds his partner. I don't think anyone needed 50 minutes of a love story that won't matter by the next episode. I was so excited to see Bill and Joel fight off infected with Ellie and instead they just get the car and go. Boring.
