The biggest plot twist was that there wasn’t one 😅. It really can’t be called a mystery, more like a dark drama. But I enjoyed it as it was.

how old was she supposed to be like 9 but mom was killed when she 4. i feel like Floyd is an ass and creepy and murderer but we don't care because Noelle was crazy. but then we are supposed to feel bad bc she had sister die and Floyd was still fuckin around with math groupies and took artifacts from Noelle house. That he knew were from Ellie house so odd.
Why did they tell us the body of Ellie had been run over? what was point of running over body that apparently none found.
also how are we supposed to assume Ellie wore same clothes for years I didn't understand the hypothesis she was going to Europe but wasn't she already in Europe and why police thought burglar was not Ellie when she had keys and the odd stuff was missing like a cake.
This is well writing book that i found problematic with how character were supposed to act. Laurel literally goes into basement cell where she could ben kidnapped had Noelle cousin just been as crazy. he literally says i would text someone where you are at and she laughs it off despite having a kid that disappeared around this location and not knowing Noelle family is hereditary nuts or a cult. I was like laurel I can't support that you are good person or not. why did Floyd kill himself? he seemed more self and had 10 and 21 daughter. Guess they will be ok esp the daughter who mom already was killed. Glad Laurel literally dated this guy a few months and is willing to take care of her .
3.5 stars it's a book it's written well as far as technical but artistically depressing bc how we are supposed to support Floyd basic kidnapping Poppy bc she was cuter than SJ? he had impregnated Noelle twice and made her feel bad for miscarriage despite her not even being worthy parent. This is winner laurel defending her kids.

I made the mistake of finishing this book at work... I had to push myself not to cry. I was so heartbroken. I HATED the 3rd person POV. I also didn't like how they didn't label each chapter to tell you WHO was speaking, you just kinda had to guess? That was frustrating. And all the british slang was harder for me to comprehend sometimes.

For the record, Laurel didn't know all the details of Ellies captivity. She has no idea how she died. And after thr video shuts off she reels and is sobbing and the kid walked in.....she knew no matter what, this kid has been screwed up enough and pushed it down like she had for 10 years. I wish they would have explained more of what happened after Christmas eve.....

@@nikkisbooknook...a literary work it's definitely not...a true garbage read 🤔 it's not that either...a good mystery or psych thrill of a read (?) Not even close... BUT a TRUE WASTE of time, brain cells (?) MOST DEFINITELY! How it became so popular & a MUST read is MORE of a psych mystery than the book itself. The author wasted (I'm going to go out on a limb here) hundreds of thousands of people's TIME (and money) IMO IF you want to try a page turner, I'd suggest Stephan King's (The Stand) IMHO. I read that book when it was first published & THAT was a page turner AND it kept you wondering " What NOW 😂) or Dolores Clairborn...He brought characters from other books into the newer books he was writing at the time. These two books are what I consider to be true psychological thrillers than horror or mystery. Again, IMO...The Stand is a great book to cut your psyche teeth into 🧐 You may choose to watch the made for television programs before reading the books because the books leave NOTHING out 😳 Enjoyed your review‼️

    SPOILER ALERT.
I just finished this book and I feel so dark and sad right now... I can't stop thinking of Noelle just leaving Ellie to die in the basement with the hamsters. 😢 When I was reading I thought we would have a plot twist and that the twist was that Ellie killed Noelle, and that somehow the bones actually belonged to Noelle, and that Ellie was hiding somewhere for killing her, and that's why she went back to the house to grab some things. And why did Floyd kill himself? 😢 he could've stayed, I'm sure Laurel could've kept his secret since I'm sure she would want to kill Noelle herself... they could've raised Poppy together. I'm just a mess right now lol

I honestly did not care for Laurel. I felt like she was self absorbed even before we found out Ellie was dead. She totally checked out as a parent and wife. This book was odd, weird, and underwhelming. Noelle was disgusting. I just feel like none of the characters were fleshed out. Hanna and Theo getting together when and how?! Jake and Blue having a 6th sense umm ok, the scenes with her mom Ruby @ the home alright. Floyd was just a hot mess. The end was so well let’s kill everybody and tie it up with a cutesy wedding! Trauma & dysfunction @ it’s finest.

The acknowledgement by author says that her editor gave her a few suggestions which she incorporated and which eventually made the book even more interesting . I think if I were the editor I would have suggested her to go a little nuts with Floyd's character. All that build up for nothing. 🤦 Floyd's character had so much potential for crazy.😏Not gonna lie when the author describes Floyd noticing the change in the ways Laurel's jaw sits, it moved me to the edge of my seat. I thought yes, time for some action! But alas😔, I had to settle for a sad, dramaless ending☹️

not to mention you kind of know it was Noelle who had something to do with Ellie’s disappearance from the very beginning when they tell you Noelle lured her into her house. For me, it was most obvious Noelle was involved from the very beginning versus Floyd. I feel those details should have been left out if they wanted Noelle’s involvement to be less obvious.

I couldn't agree more. I was expecting Floyd to have a psycho-reveal and he just slinks off into the sunset! When Blue told Laura that Poppy was the dominant figure over Floyd, I wondered whether it was Poppy who demanded that he interact with Laura ("I want you to date my grandma!!!"...Violet Beauregarde-style). He turned out to be a weak loser and Poppy a golden child (after being called a complete uncontrollable brat a few years earlier). Things could have turned so many different ways but didn't. A safe and very unsatisfying ending.

Picked this book up at like 7:30 this morning and finished it at 1:40 this afternoon. They really do tell you exactly whats happening from the very beginning. It could have been executed in a more suspensful way, but I have to give Lisa serious props for the way she builds emption in her writing. The scenes dealing with her being abandoned in the basemeng just destroyed me.
I havent finished the video so maybe it's something you mention, but it REALLY bothered me that Laurel would compare how pretty her children are in her mind even after hitting the point of realization about her relationship with Hanna. Like girl did you learn nothing??

It did suck me in because I wanted to know the answers but the answers were what I expected. The book set it up so there were no surprises. When Floyd reveals everything I just felt like I already knew that stuff. Also as the 0:00 book went on, the less I liked Laurel. The way she talked about her children was very upsetting and it was very odd everyone knew Ellie was her favorite even when Ellie was alive. I still have a lot of questions about how she treated her family after Ellie went missing. Also Poppy and Floyd’s relationship was very uncomfortable. I hate that Ellie’s story is so dark and twisted and she never stands a chance at all. She’s just locked in the basement and dies. The end just left me feeling like something was missing.

I have like 100 pages of this book remaining and I was just curious to know how did you like the book and so I saw the spoiler free review by you right now. Not having read the novel entirely yet, I can’t conclude my thoughts for it but yeah I agree with the part where you say…didn’t know what to expect. Until half way through the book, I didn’t know what’s coming up and where are we leading to but the 2nd half had me hooked with the details. Yes, it’s more of emotional dark drama rather than mystery and yes I relate to you for the feeling of sadness felt. And I feel that’s because the book is talking about only Ellie’s story. Even when the novel is not presenting her perspectives, the talks are only about her and she’s the one who suffers. Generally, in dark novels, the main character is dark and so there’s that feeling of wow. Here it’s completely different.
