Every single sentence, makes sooo much sense, simple and straightforward, very very helpful, you are helping people countles times through countles years. very much appreciated, thank you
Wow - what a great teacher you are. Thank you!
I’ve been a decorator for 45 years and the best job is always in the prep so strip it and repair
This is very helful. I was thinking of putting wallpaper on old wallpaper but i was worried it would not work. Im gonna do my project with confidence now. Thanks for the helful advice and logical arguments.
Sounds like mark wahlburg with a hint of Christopher walken 👌
can u apply peel and stick wallpaper directly on?
you take the risk of moisture from the paste soaking through the previously hung wallpaper causing bubbles. Even primer can cause wallpaper to bubble. Also old seams will telegraph through. Different papers have different expansion/contraction rates that can also cause adhesion problems. Once you prime the wallpaper, removal for the next guy will be difficult to impossible. Do the job properly and remove all layers of old wallpaper first, prep, prime, size and your ready to do a job that will last much longer.
Charles. You must be a veteran paper hanger. You are absolutely correct my fiend!!!! Let me tell you something my friend, I will not hang vinyl over vinyl on commercial job; the risk that you speak about is too great to take my friend and you are absolutely correct. These people are selling the house and they said Spencer, hang the paper over this! But you are absolutely correct and I appreciate your remark here
@@spencercolgan Hi, could I ask what to do if the wall is covered with anaglypta wallpaper? We tried to remove it but it destroyed the walls. We did it anyway in the dining room, but the hallway would be a massive job and if we have to replaster it will cost a fortune. The hallway had some work done so some parts had the wallpaper taken off but only the bottom part. I was hoping to put an other anaglypta walppaper over this bottom part so that it would match. Any advice?
MegaDniela Your Wallpaper is actually one of the easiest to remove. Because it is textured, you can easily open it and expose the backing and saturated with water… Here’s what I would do… I would write down the walls at the seams at the bottom and at the top with warm water with a spray bottle… Then I would do it again, then I would do it again, and then I would do it a third time… After 45 Minutes of wedding this wallpaper, I bet you you would start to have success removing it. Do not destroy your walls with this easy-to-remove wallpaper that you have on your wall… Please let me know how it goes
@@spencercolgan thank you for your reply. We removed the one in the dining room with the steamer and it was a complete mess. It could be that the walls are just bad made, the house is quite old. Thank you ill try your way
@@MegaDniela sounds like laven plaster underneath the wallpaper
You are a legend
This guys a cheap hack
Well that would save a lot of effort. I started doing our spare bedroom and striped it with a steamer and sanded it down and filled in cracks. I then painted skirting boards etc ceiling and now half way round the room with the new paper. I wouldn't of taken it on if I had known oh was work g overtime etc. Phew.
Oh right there with you! If you have to rent a steamer you know you're in for a JOB!!!
Hi Huge fan. Is 999 the same as r35 because my instructions say do not use r 35? Because if I accidentally used pro 935 to prime my wall paper over wall paper should I go back and put 999 over what I already have done?
Thank you
Hey Spencer, so, what is your helper mudding over? I'm assuming he is mudding over the old seams and then you will 999 the entire room? I have a 3 bathroom job i'm going to estimate this weekend - wallpaper over wallpaper. Client does not want the expense of removing the old wallpaper. Thanks for the outstanding videos and tips ~ Dan.
Dan. So sorry for the late response. My helper was merging over the drywall that was really messed up; please don’t try to put mud over wallpaper seams; unless you are dealing with very thin wall paper that is actually paper, vinyl is a substrate that is somewhat like a cushion - therefore it is an unstable substrate over which to put mud
Customers never fail to blow my mind with stupidity In order to "save money" hahahaha
Do you apply the 999 over the entire existing wallpaper before applying new wallpaper?
If the wall is plasterboard and has wallpaper on it already can you still wallpaer over it
Can we apply vinyl wallpaper on vinyl wallpaper?
Yes but you must use vinyl over vinyl wallpaper paste
We had a commercial project, a large Hotel of 125 guest rooms where we could not remove the vinyl wall-covering due to the new wall surface had not been sized !
We had done a previous project of approximately the same number of rooms with the same problem but that time left the vinyl in place, because it had a scrum surface, we had the contractor prime and skim over the vinyl with drywall mud and prime with a PVA,then finished with2 top coats . The only problem came with the outside corners ( yes too soft and the drywall mud was chipping off when guest luggage made contact with. Looking back should have got them to cut off the vinyl 6inch back from the corner as to get at the original corner bead and feather from there.
Getting back to the 125 rooms. Against my advice I was overruled and told that the contractor needed to remove the vinyl. After that for years our guys would go into a room and repair air bubbles pockets in the wall due to the damage done in removing the vinyl that pulled off both layers wallboard of paper leaving scarred and subject to moisture popping the damaged wallboard . After a several years the problem diminished . Enjoy your style your a great tradesman.
Thank you very much. I try my best; you said something very interesting. You can put joint compound over vinyl wallcovering? I thought vinyl moves and would never be a solid foundation for joint compound… You can actually put joint compound on vinyl wallpaper?
@@spencercolganCrown wallcoverings. The magic was the vinyl covering had a scrum finish on the top side, thus allowing a "bite" into the surface so after priming the mud would lock into it.The only vinyl that could be removed where the old plaster exterior facing walls with multiply layers of oil paint, it would come off fairly easy there and we wanted it off as if and when we sustained a leak from the outside we did not want to deal with repairing the entire wall and we had a number of failures or issues like that especially on the 3 floors where we had roof and dormers making up the exterior walls. Late 90's to bad we did not have Festool's vacuum dust extractor and wall sander attachment then..that damn drywall powder lingers. To think that vinyl was on for 10 years and we went back to painted walls with custom wood appliques mouldings.
Nice
Hi there I am looking to wallpaper over existing wallpaper that has been painted in matt acrylic paint. It is well stuck down to the wall. Should I just paint all the walls in primer/sealant then I can paper? Thanks!

1. Make sure that there are no air pockets anywhere. If there be any, cut out, plaster, and prime first.
2. Prime the entire surface with a pigmented primer. There are several you can use. I recommend this one:
PRO-977
Ultra-Prime® Pigmented Wallpaper Primer.
3. Hang your paper.
@@spencercolgan thank you so much for your quick reply! Awesome
nailpolishinhale you are quite welcome! I’d appreciate it if you took one minute to give me a 5-star review on Google and say a kind word about my online services

What product did you use to merge the wallpaper? Also can i use peel and stick after i merge ?
It’s called a plastic smoother. Yes. You can hang peel and stick here with Vinyl over vinyl glue.
What if the existing wallpaper is textured and new wallpaper is smooth vinyl? What if you can see a drywall line behind the existing wallpaper? Is there any way I don’t have to remove the entire old wallpaper? What kind of adhesive do I use if the new wallpaper is not pasted? I know a lot of questions, but I’m in a quandary.
Elber. Great question, your answer is in the following video :

@@spencercolgan Okay watched it thoroughly along with other videos. So, I guess I have no choice but to remove the wallpaper then, so then I’ll have to prime and skim after I remove? I’ve removed so much wallpaper in a previous house, I was really hoping not to have to do that again. Thank you for the truth though. Love all your videos. After I told myself no wallpaper,…never, never…after all that removal, here I am wanting to put up wallpaper. 😆
Let’s make sure… Please give me a call on my cell phone

Can Zinsser BIN be used in place of the Roman 999? I’d prefer to use BIN because it’s oil based.
Mark, they are actually two separate things and the product you mention is not oil but it is alcohol; after you put that on let it dry and then you have to use Roman 999 or shieldz.
@@spencercolgan
Ok, good point about it being a shellac vs oil, but I'm not sure I understand the reason for using 999 over BIN since its a primer and sealer.
@@MarkNOTW It’s basically a tacky Agent; in other words, it makes your wallpaper stick better and oddly enough it also makes it able to remove better
How about putting wallpaper over wallpaper that has been painted with high gloss?
Put pro 999 on the gloss first. The. Hang. Let it dry of course.
Also if a professional papers your walls and it all falls off wonder what went wrong? He's a neighbour so don't want to complain.
Wallpaper in *NOT* paper. It's vinyl with a paper backing so the glue has something to adhere to. That old paper clearly wasn't installed properly and in a humid bathroom no less. Going over it again it will continue to fail. As a homeowner I can see some practicality in this quick and dirty method but professionally there's really no excuse.
But hold on, let me challenge you if you use vinyl over vinyl adhesive, you can go right over this!
You couldn't teach me anything that I haven't forgot you no applicator
