The song was written to promote a European help-line for children to report abuse. So no it did not happen to herself. She actually was very close with her father who died a couple couple of years ago. She wrote a song about how hard it was for her to accept he was longer in her life. The song is on their latest album and is called "Supernova". Listen to the officially released song and then try the acoustic version wich is superior recorded for Dutch tv.

The very first concert after he past away she completely choked up while singing "Forgiven". You can see that audience is aware what is going on because it so quiet in the hall you would have been able to hear a pin drop. Everybody is holding their breath so see if she will make it to the end. She struggles her way through the song and nearly makes to the end until she finally breaks. Don’t think it’s an autobiographical story.
It is like a "protestation" song. In real life, Sharon den Adel loved her father, who passed away, I think, two years ago. She dedicated him "Supernova", which is from the lastest album "Resist". I think it's not a real-life-based or autobiographical song. That particular album, "The Heart of Everything", touched various topics like this one, toxic relations, you can see it perfectly in another song from the same album: "What have you done".
That’s what Sharon does. WT is mostly the Sharon den Adel show, she writes the most heartfelt lyrics in the symphonic metal words. She also has perhaps the warmest voice of the symphonic metal queens, her voice will tear your heart out
I don't know about Sharon's youth, but I do know this isn't the only music video of them that makes you go "Oh shit..." Please check out their music video for 'Angels'.

This song brings me to tears. A lot of WT's music is about difficult subjects - loss, crime, toxic relationships, even dementia. (Angels, A Dangerous Mind, Lost, Destroyed, Jane Doe, Empty Eyes, Say My Name) And Sharon puts so much emotion into her singing.
This might not be one of their most popular ones, but I really recommend The Truth Beneath The Rose. There's a great live version on RUclips.
That live version is Black Symphony -- of which there is also a live version of Frozen as well.
This video brings me to tears every time.
I've been in love with Within Temptation for 15 years now. My first single of them and my first "crush" was Memories. Fascinating melody and lyrics, stunning video clip, beautiful Sharon.
My second one was "What have you done" feat. Keith Caputo who changed his sex and became Mina Caputo. I absolutely adore this track which is full of passion and despair.
"Shot in the dark" and "Say my name" are on my fave list as well. And many more which are wonderful.
To sum it up, Sharon is one of the most beautiful vocalist out there with one of the most charming voices.

Oh my god, that punched me in the gut. I've heard the song a million times, but I haven't watched the video in years. I didn't understand the metaphor of the child crying and breaking her doll until now. While I'm happy Sharon Den Adel didn't experience this herself, it's heart breaking and nauseating that countless children go through this, especially in times like these where the children are stuck quarantined with their abusers.
I've watched a couple of your other reactions, and I really like your style - you actually do a proper critical analysis of the songs. Like pointing out where it's weak and strong, and things like that.
One of their best is called "Lost" and its about someone in Sharon's life who had alzheimers or dementia. The emotion hits you like a bus in the face. You won't regret hearing it though.

Sharon is a beautiful and compelling singer, and they're a quality band.
Some of the best art is troubling, and I don't require music to be comfortable.

I both love and hate this song - the song is intense and awesome, but the topic is horrible.
I think it's important to raise awareness around these very real situations, and with bands as wellknown as these, the message will stand strong.

You are a strong woman, Cecilie. I have nothing but respect for your statement. My mother divorced my birth father at a very young age. She met and married my father when I was four, and there may have been fathers who were as good, but there has never been a better father than this man was to me. He was my hero, and it completely broke my heart when he had a stroke and I had to take care of him before his death. The look in his eyes when I was able to arrive after work to help him told me that the roles had reversed ... I had become his hero. There is absolutely nothing right with that ... I could have never repaid what he did for me except become the type of man he showed me how to be. I was devastated each time I left the nursing home after spending time trying to comfort him, and his heroism was never diminished because of his condition, but as hard as I try, I will never come close to being what he was to me. The biological guy was abusive to my mother and she had the strength to get the hell out. I was saved before it became necessary. I wish you never face the decision at any level. Respect at the highest level.

I've lived a charmed life, thank you very much. I cannot tell you how much it means to me to have such a kind friend in Norway. Your generous words touch my heart. This song and video breaks each of us in it's powerful message. There is far too much truth in the story to be comfortable watching it, but we aren't supposed to be. I absolutely love Within Temptation, have for a long time. This is their heart on a plate for all to see. Bless Sharon and the boys!!
Those "old" songs are the real Within Temptation. I love them even if the last 3 albums are not my favourites at all. The first albums were really amazing: Mother Earth, the silent Force and the Heart of Everything. You can really feel the gothic and symphonic metal inside. After they became....something else...I still follow them. But they are no more like I knew them. Ps: listen also "All I need" ftom the same album of Frozen. That is THE BALLAD of every time!!!! :)
I think the video was put deliberately into a time when a woman did not really have an option or a way out from a situation like this. Unfortunately its not that different nowadays either...

Sharon recently released a solo album called My Indig and she explained that she's had a very difficult past - whether it was in the present or past, but she did and I think it does affect her a lot and she talks a lot about those in her music. So you can check out her My Indigo album for a more personal Sharon Den Adel :)

Try watching their ANGELS (official) video.The song and Sharon's (angelic) voice captures the heart while the video might seem...surprising.
I don't know if there's a personal backstory to the theme of this video, but I gotta say -- this is really the only song I've heard that made me cry. Especially now as a new mother, I feel super sensitive to things involving kids. It takes courage to tell this kind of story, but it does impact people. WT is awesome like that. Definitely check out the mv for "Angels"!
Great video. There are so many great songs to cover. Here are a few suggestions. Studio- "Running Up the Hill (Kate Bush Cover)", "Covered by Roses", "Titanium (David Guetta cover). Live- "The Promise" and "The Truth Beneath the Rose" from the Black Symphony DVD. Or, "In the Middle of the Night" and "Stand my Ground" from the Elements DVD.
This music video raises a very difficult topic that should be discussed. However, it’s not autobiographic at all, as far as I know, Sharon has beautiful parents (unfortunately, her father has died a couple years ago).
I would like to recommend you to try some live performances of Within Temptation, especially from their DVD Black Symphony (every song from there is amazing).
How familiar are you with the band Sabaton? I recommend their song "The Lion From The North" if you haven't already heard it. In particular, I recommend the great tour video they released of this song on their RUclips channel. I'm recommending that version because it includes a load of footage from their recent European tour.

This is what I read about the song
The video for frozen is about a Family in the 1800's. The man of the house come home from work, clearly not very happy and goes to the pantry and collects his alcohol. during dinner, the family eat in silence untill the father abuses his wife(dragging her upstairs). the daughter, confused at this shortly walks upstairs with her doll before also being abused, during which the mother is shouting and begging him not to hurt their daughter. Following this, the mother poisons the father and is then arrested for his murder and put into prison before her hanging. However, the idea created by the lyrics is very emotional. before seeing the video, anyone would think it was about decisions and consequences and possibly unrequainted love and the damage that can happen not just to others but you also. however if you put the video to these lyrics, i personnaly think there is a clear link to abuse and deffinately consequences. "you wont forgive me" can clearly relater to the daughter being unforgiving of the mother killing her father inorder to protect. "Frozen" as lyrics and a song name could easily suggest entrapment of emotions, being stuck in a house of abuse unable to react or tell anyone or even being trapped and held down by the burden of murder. Also, many people dont talk out when it comes to abuse and i think, that this video and song is a prime example to show that. If it was in this day-and-age, the mother could have spoken to someone about it and got help, however she still resorted to murder.this shows the song and video also have a strong view of sacrifice. This could be a good way of promoting people speaking out against any form of abuse as it interprets the struggle people go through to make things Okay...

Talking about heavier stuff... You know it's kinda interesting that Within Temptation started as a Doom Metal band. Their first album Enter was really good. You should react to the song Enter from that album to see just how much they changed after deciding to go for the commercial route...

It’s not so much about her life as she’s just playing a character or representing a perspective within the storyline, which is something you’ll see in many of their songs! “Memories” is an example that comes to mind.
Social issues are a big theme in WT’s music overall, too. Raise Your Banners from one of their more recent albums is about police brutality.
That's true, this is a midtempo/ballad song with a deeper meaning from them. Even, If you want to hear another powerful song, you should react to The Promise (Black Symphony) or Paradise feat. Tarja Turunen.
If you would, I would recommend reacting to Three Days Grace and Never Too Late -- which has a similar message to this, which is: To never give up, and to never back down from doing the right thing.
Because it is never too late to decide to do either.
I can recommend a different direction, but perhaps not much "heavier". My favourite song by the m is Mother Earth, it's different.
WT have some incredible emotional ballads, more than heavier songs imo. :)
Maybe you already know this, but Sharon is self-taught singer, so she doesn't have formal education on her voice. Pretty cool, right?
Actually she had music lessons during high school time, but she only started studying singing techniques after mother earth album. On the mother earth tour dvd, the singer who shares the stage with her in Mt Farewell was her singing teacher at the time.
