I love watching you work with your dad. I didn't get to do much with my dad, but I'm making sure I take time to do things with my kids. My middle son is who got me interested in beekeeping, and we've got 2 hives so far.
Good catch Randy, got one yesterday that swarmed from one of my hives. Huge white oak up about 18’ no way to get them from ladder, put pallet in the forks of my tractor loader got me closer to them. Wound up throwing a ratchet strap over the limb and pulling it down enough for me to hand scoop them into a hive box. Got the queen and bees and only took 2 stings on the hand. Good day!
"Can't claim he caught a fish, if he scooped it out of a tank at PetSmart". ROFL!!!!! I needed that! We're due for 8 more inches of snow today and tonight: where are we supposed to put it? The sidewalks are puddles... You've put a smile on my face, Mr. DirtRooster, sir!! Mpls, MN
Dude, this stuff is amazing to watch. Seriously can't wait for more. Idk why watching beekeepers and swarm captures are so interesting to watch. I usually watch while in class, and people give me weird looks but it really is entertaining and interesting.
another great video. I want to say how much I appreciate you and your dad talking to the viewers. I love the way he explains things for us, as I know you already know all about what he is saying.
Had not watched 628 dirt rooster channel in a bit. Was watching Mr ED assure as hech I hear your name and now I hear Mr RD ON THIS channel. You guys crack me up. Love the channel's.
It's amazing how many bees can fit in a little box like that. Piles and piles! Sheesh, and I can barely stand being in the same building with other people. :P
I was really happy to see your dad out there with you! That definitely wasn't an easy swarm catch at that time of day but you did a fantastic job. Mr Ed better watch this video so he can see how it's done! 😂
Just a note to say thanks for all the videos. Shook my first swarm out of a pear tree today. Your vids along with Yappy and Mr. Ed’s made it a success. Thanks for the help and entertainment.
We have three pear trees and quite a few bee hives. The swarms are like 90% in the pears. The rest are either in a pine tree or a mulberry. They really seem to prefer pear trees.
Mr Rooster, What a good video!! Iv tried various ways to capture a swarm, But holding Old comb to them is a new one for me....Thanks Brother.....Rick in pa.
Rooster, you set yourself up for Mr. Ed to beat you last year. When you take a challenge or make a bet you have to hedge the outcome. He used his resources for boxes and materials (coffin scraps) :) and being a full time apiarist to hedge the challenge in his favour. Lay down some rules. Only count cut outs and swarms over 8' above ground with no bait boxes. And swarms collected with Wreck It Ralph don't count. I think you'll get him. :) Jeff we love you but Randy lost a round and needs moral support. Best to you both in 2018. You guys are great fun and provide tremendous knowledge to the world of bee keeping. Thank you both for your time posting these videos.
I love your channel, man. My fiancé and I just moved back out to my old stomping ground. I have a lot of land to work with and we are interested in bees. Please keep making videos! I’ve learned a lot over the past 6 months since I found your channel.
One odourless garlic tablet a day helps keeps the mozzies away. After a couple of months it stops working as well but that gets you through most of the summer. Great to see you and your Dad looking well.
Nice swarm. They ran rite on in there. having bees scouting my boxes, so it want be long . Dam pollen is fallen trees are blooming. yard is green THAT TIME OF YEAR SPRING HAS SPRUNG cheers big brother
Sorry i for got. Now I do, yellow and black, Signs too he hee THERE COMING watch out! Now just get em to land. That work sugar water in a bird bath WOW look at the bees WOW i got to get some more bird baths stands
Hey guys love your channel, thanks to watching your videos I had the confidence to catch my first swarm 5m (15ft) up a tree . I used a cardboard box I pulled out of nearby trash pile climbed 4m up a tree cut surrounding branches and bent the branch down to the box and gave it a shake. In they went , home they came to a Warre hive, all settled in. Thanks for giving me the confidence. Real swarm ketchin apparently :)
I think Mr. Ed has been kicking your butt so far, a swarm is a swarm. Is this your first swarm for 2018? Love your videos I watch them all and looking for more... keep them coming.
I like your style , been watching all your videos and learning a whole bunch , thanks, and that should do me a whole lot in this upcoming spring when I try to catch me some 🐝
I was watching a video from the "Dafrogtoad" where you were helping him out splitting hives with his girlfriend and she dropped the frame with bees on it. That happens to everyone one time or another. Anyway, I just love the way you are with the new beekeepers starting out. I have also seen it in other videos too, where you have so much patience when teaching the new ones. My hat off to you. You are a great teacher, so keep up the great videos. I am learning so much. Tim
I am not as egotistical as Mr Yappy. I don't care if the swarm is attracted to a bait hive, is shaken down or even flies down to your hive body as soon as you drive up and tip you $1 each as they march in. A swarm is a swarm - how you gather it up is totally immaterial. Any fool can catch and hive a swarm, but it takes a real bee man to help them stay alive and thrive afterwards.
Good to see your dad's still hanging in there like a rusty fish hook keep em coming, You and the rest of the elite bee tubers make taking care of our female flying money worth it.👍
Good to see your Pa up and about again. No idea if it's something he'd like, but a forearm crutch is a bit nicer than those curved canes. You can let em go to free up your hand, but the forearm cuff help hold it in place. Just had my knee replaced, and got a set, mine even has spring loaded shock absorbers in the bottom: In-Motion - Spring-Assisted Forearm Crutch.
Funny thing I did not notice first time I looked at this video, as you drive away with the bees in the bed of the pickup, I see a bee on the windshield (on the INSIDE I figure. Bet there was more than one that decided to take the first class seats inside!
They get to ride for a little bit but eventually they wander around the cabin while the seat belt light is still. Then the captain cracks a window and they get sucked out into the night. Much like DB Cooper no one really knows what happened to them. lol
Lower them, spray them with some water and shake them into the box. Close the box. Brake the branch and throw it far away. Wait until night to move the box.
Tow strap hack - take the receiver out of the hitch, push the tow strap loop into the receiver and put the pin through the loop. Won't come off the ball then.
I suppose it's ok for using this "hack" to tie your tent to but plz don't try hauling or towing anything with weight that way. If you do make sure nobody that you love is anywhere nearby.
Last year early I had a call to a huge swarm it was over 35' up in a big tree I couldn't get and it was over a road . How would you get a swarm down from that high? I even drank a red bull and still wasn't high enough
Drat he's done it all. Had a swarm about 20 feet up in a maple. Shook it down and it appeared to be going well until they all at once decided that my box wasn't good enough. They flew up to the next branch higher because i'd cut off the previous one. Out comes the fishing pole. Get the rope up, shake them hard, and they flew into the mulberry tree. Finally got them because the mulberry branch they like is growing horizontal. We call that branch the widow-maker and it's probably got my name on it.
Oh Man I love it! ‘Get a four wheel drive or stay on the pavement!’ I will never own another truck or tractor that’s not a four wheel drive! Plan for the worst and hope for the best! Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it! I swear the more videos I watch, the more you sound a whole lot like myself! And this my friends is how you keep it real.......curious to all the "fishing" comments. "Snag the queen". "fishing for her"......kinda like Mr.Ed going to the store to "catch" dinner?
Those top feeders don't leak. I do usually stop looking as soon as I see one but I'm in them enough that if there were more than one I'd likely see them.
See I'm building bunch of boxes. Nucs that will need fed. If I can just set jars on migratories. That would save me amazing time and money. Is this correct that I can? Black Label Homestead , duelly noted. the gloves are coming off this year. I have been holding back so not to embarrass Mr Ed. I will not use his real name to prevent any more embarrassment.
628DirtRooster you do? Well my theory is that if o was to wear that hat I would look awesome because hats from good RUclipsrs make people look awesome. Of course I'm going to have to change some variables in there but I think it's a pretty solid theory. :)
At 18:30 - was that her majesty about an inch from the top of the frame and just right of center? Then in the next couple seconds she crawls up onto the top bar of the frame?
Man you and your dad rock at bee catching. You know all the tricks.
I adore how gentle and sweetly you treat bees and talk to them kindly.
Just to let you know that ever since finding your channel, I have been hooked. I cant stop watching. Love it!
Thanks Brad :)
I love watching you work with your dad. I didn't get to do much with my dad, but I'm making sure I take time to do things with my kids. My middle son is who got me interested in beekeeping, and we've got 2 hives so far.
Here at 628DirtRooster, we don't just stand by our bee boxes, we stand ON our bee boxes!
Best built boxes in the business. lol
LOL, You got a black cat too.
That was so funny. The bees were running in as if it was a Black Friday sale.
Good catch Randy, got one yesterday that swarmed from one of my hives. Huge white oak up about 18’ no way to get them from ladder, put pallet in the forks of my tractor loader got me closer to them. You're a real Bee Man! ;-) Ingenious pulling the tree down, good thing it didn't snap! Nice capture Randy!

Stay warm up there. It's a chilly 60 degrees right now.
Glad to see your dad out and about. He looks like he is doing great.

He's improving slowly.

Good to see your dad is getting out some. I am ready to start going some swarm chasing.
Getting the fever?
The rooster is back! Looking forward to another summer of videos!

I do need to add a disclaimer.
628DirtRooster hahaha lol
Excellent video, jammin music! How nice to see your dad up and about and lending a hand. It is good to see you in swarm action. Have a great week!
Hope Y'all had a good weekend yourselves. I like music. :)
Glad to see your dad out there. Always like to hear him carrying on.
Glad get him in another video.

Hey, there's Dad, glad to see him looking lots better than the last video I saw him in (in hospital bed)... way to go guys..
Getting a little better week by week.
I love your channel, man. My fiancé and I just moved back out to my old stomping ground. I have a lot of land to work with and we are interested in bees. Please keep making videos! I’ve learned a lot over the past 6 months since I found your channel.

Dad’s a good helper! Enjoyed the video, as usual! Thanks!
He's a good helper when he's not giving orders. haha
Dude I've been watching your videos the past few days. For some reason I can't stop watching lol I wanna start be keeping now
Glad you found us.
Glad to see your dad out and about! Maybe I missed something, but last I remember he wasn't in very good shape.
He has good days and bad. He's still struggling but you can't keep him away from the bees.
Nice to see your dad. Looks like he is getting around all right
He has his days.
Glad to see you back for spring bee education
Thanks Lonna
One odourless garlic tablet a day helps keeps the mozzies away. After a couple of months it stops working as well but that gets you through most of the summer. Great to see you and your Dad looking well.
Just go ahead and take the real thing and find out who REALLY loves you!
Great idea of using the comb to let them crawl onto. I'll have to try that. Thanks for sharing.
It’s fun to do when you have the time.
Nice swarm. They ran rite on in there. having bees scouting my boxes, so it want be long . Dam pollen is fallen trees are blooming. yard is green THAT TIME OF YEAR SPRING HAS SPRUNG cheers big brother

Nice new truck. Good to see pops out and about.
Enjoying the truck. The old one was falling apart.
You crack me up Rooster.
I like your style , been watching all your videos and learning a whole bunch , thanks, and that should do me a whole lot in this upcoming spring when I try to catch me some 🐝

I've been watching Jp and yappy the last week or so , them two are something else. Great vids
Good channels.

I was waiting for you to start doing the bee box dance if they would have crawled up your leg....lol
I though I felt one on my thigh but she never stung.
Hey , I see your dads doing better. That't great.
thanks, never did before dont even know about bees thought it would be cool, looked up and saw your video thanks again
"Mosquitos out here are worse than the bees" aint that the truth. They'll carry you off, down south! 😂
We do have plenty of skeeters
Good to see Dad getting around.
Yep, he's getting out more regularly.
Good to see your dad's still hanging in there like a rusty fish hook keep em coming, You and the rest of the elite bee tubers make taking care of our female flying money worth it.👍
He's hanging in there like a voting ballot chad. :)
Vans. The shoes of beekeepers!
Good for traction on a bee box too.

Ok now that my glasses are on not so crazy.... I thought that was the hive. I need to wear my glasses.
Im gonna start beekeeping the Randy way this year. Less package buying and more swarm catchin
Go for it man. Video video video... :)
No Bee left behind! Bee lives matter! Was that a bee inside your truck?
Probably. I always get bees in my truck.
19:10 I think I can see the queen on the box lid.
Me too!
Awesome hack! Never heard that one.
I suppose it's ok for using this "hack" to tie your tent to but plz don't try hauling or towing anything with weight that way. If you do make sure nobody that you love is anywhere nearby.
Tremendous amount of stuff to learn.
It never ends. :)
Nice seeing you my brother in Christ!!!
2nd this too!
Good to have you in here Velma.
What do u normal charge for bee removed is there a minum as far as having to cut them out of a wall thanks
Tree fiddy unless I got to put it all back nice and new looking. The repairs cost extra.
6:09 -- LOL Where did you get that clip of Yappy the Beeman lecturing?
I called in a favor. LOL He was all on board when I told him what I was doing and he put that together at the fire department where he works.
It was good of him to do that. It fit perfectly into the video. Loved it.
And a perfect little dig at Mr. Ed. LOL
whats up with that bee with the darker abdomen in the center of the frame at 3:06?
Gotta love the music!!
Crazy optical illusion at 4:11 the cat looks like it’s tiny and walking on the box frame.
Last year early I had a call to a huge swarm it was over 35' up in a big tree I couldn't get and it was over a road . How would you get a swarm down from that high?
I even drank a red bull and still wasn't high enough
Two Red Bulls and a Monster. Sling shot and fishing line to pull a rope up there and break that limb off.
628DirtRooster Thanks bud I'll remember that!
Drat he's done it all. Had a swarm about 20 feet up in a maple. Shook it down and it appeared to be going well until they all at once decided that my box wasn't good enough. They flew up to the next branch higher because i'd cut off the previous one. Out comes the fishing pole. Get the rope up, shake them hard, and they flew into the mulberry tree. great way to start the new year challenge!
Got number two last night.
Woohoo!! kick tail and take names! Gettem!

You said it. I'm not great at tip toeing around the issues and I can't stand men with lady hand shakes.
What kind of bee box was that. That's the kind I need. I want to use it to hold my motorhome up when I'm working on it.
Sounds like "Starsky and Hutch" music!!! LOL!!!
Ha! I loved that show.
@@628DirtRooster Are y'all getting hammered with the storms?
@@rodneymiddleton9624 Not yet but Mr. Ed called to tell me they're coming.
@@628DirtRooster Stay safe!
I wear those same safety glasses, they are the only ones that don't fog up on me.
I get them by the dozen.
Will I say "Take a sting like a real man" to one of my whiny co-workers this week? Believe it!
You should greet them with that every morning.
Lol....
do you use a queen excluder?
Not usually
how do you keep her from laying eggs in both supers?
If there is a good honey ring above the brood she usually won't cross it to lay but if she does work the super it's no big deal for me since I rarely extract my honey. I just want them to draw comb.

628DirtRooster will do. Thanks!
Caught a swarm today made an improvised box no frames just The sticks made sugar water. They didnt sting. Will they want to swarm again
Not for several months at least.
Found the queen at 18:53 in the middle of the frame on the ground, slightly to the right
And this my friends is how you keep it real.......curious to all the "fishing" comments. "Snag the queen". "fishing for her"......kinda like Mr.Ed going to the store to "catch" dinner?
Yappy Beeman po old Mr. Ed ya'll teamed up to jump on his back. LOL
Mr. Ed is quick and carries a straight razor. It takes two people to take him down.
And that's only if he's been drinking the holy water.....bring more manpower if he's straight ....
Do you stop looking for queens after you find one in swarms? Wondering of your thoughts on, being more than one, in most swarms?Great video btw

How do you get away with working with them barehanded without them stinging you mostly? Are they just to focused on working for the hive?
Slow careful movement. Don’t put pressure on any.

I'm gonna need one of them Dirt Rooster hats. For scientific use of course.
We do have a scientific research grant program. ;)

10k views. Wow Roos, you have an apiary on RUclips. Not bad for duct tape, and pallets. I’ve never seen the lower the tree with a 4x4 technique.
Got to mix it up to keep things interesting.
At 18:30 - was that her majesty about an inch from the top of the frame and just right of center? Then in the next couple seconds she crawls up onto the top bar of the frame?
Just an older worker.
I'm pretty sure that queen is on the frame at 3:06
Cool bee catch!
Fun one.
Do i see the queen on the frame @18:30 ?
I didn't see her there.
