8:16 - What if Java is that? Like from the point of view of a shareholder Minecraft Java and Bedrock aren’t different, it’s just Minecraft. Then Java keeps it’s community, it’s free modding space and essentially eyes off it to allow this smaller and more tightly- knit community. In an ideal world mod and map creators would have more ways to profit from there creation, but would could also get a much worse alternative.
Nice vid so i personally think the best would be just allowing mods to be payed and maybe an editional official marked place website or somting where minecraft gets a cut and handels everything but also allow external sails because the argument "someone can just copy it" doesn't make that much sense because if you make an opensource free mod you can set a license that doesn't allow for Comercial forks etc but overall nice vid
Paid Mods are a thing that most people despise. Look at Bethesda's Creation Club for example, and the whole fiasco with Steam cancelling paid mods. Plus, Java lets people mod... FOR FREE, so why should I pay for them for the Bedrock version? Also a large chunk of the Marketplace assets are STOLEN because people want to make a quick buck with little to no way of properly moderating it. Corporations do not care about the bad actors when they get a cut of that money. The best solution is removing the Marketplace altogether.
as someone who bought about $20 worth of spigot plugins, Its worth it to spend money to get better versions of plugin types that already exist, like a shop plugin.
The Java marketplace could just be a community mod downloading place like Curseforge or Modrinth and some things could be paid but 30% of the revenue could go to Mojang.
13:46 I think the problem with the Bedrock Marketplace is that Microsoft doesn't actually check what people upload if it's copyrighted. Pretty sure somewhere it states that if you upload it, it's ASSUMED that you got permission, so they can avoid any legal trouble or checking. Plus many people or copyright owners don't care enough to deal with it.
marketplace creator here!! your solution sounds great but yes, is very idealistic. a big problem w/ the current marketplace is the AMOUNT of content that gets published. youre right when you discussed the heaps of low quality items. their review system takes MONTHS to get through because theres just so much content. that's probably a reason why there isn't a java marketplace as well- they just dont dedicate enough staff/time into review and that would double the already-long wait times- never mind taking the time to review and approve non marketplace mods! that's why they've cracked down more recently on who can actually publish, and force creators to partner with 3rd parties rather than get approved as a direct creator themselves (so the knowledgable 3rd parties can do the review work for them before any content gets submitted to Microsoft for the final approval). all this is from a skin creator's perspective btw :)
Yeah Roblox claims 30%, but I’m fairly sure, that that’s not realty true, I’m pretty sure the devs get 30%, Roblox is pretty greedy when it comes to robux😢
Roblox pays developers in robux and keeps 30% percent, but then, if the devs want to convert their robux to money, they charge 40% of that, leaving the developers with only 30% of the game’s profit.
I dont know where he got the "roblox takes 75%" from. I work with roblox game developement and they usually take 30% with exeption of selling external gamepasses in a game, in which case the 30% cut goes to the creator of the experience.
I'm almost certain it's the same reason Mojang never developed an official modding API. It's less about them being "lazy" or "greedy" and more about real security concerns and consumer protection laws. This is similar to why chat reporting was added to Java. It wasn't due to "Evil Microsoft Greed" but because of legitimate legal concerns. The EU (And sweden!) is strict about consumer protection. An official modding API would most likely drastically lower the barrier to modding the game (like installing mods, remember no forge or fabric to install), significantly increasing the security risks due to the significantly larger user base, hence more incentive for bad faith actors (remember that modding atm is still a "niche", most java users never even touch modding). Likewise, officially allowing paid mods would mean Mojang is indirectly endorsing them, which could lead to liability issues. And its my personal guess that they simply don't deem it worth it. Like always, bad faith actors are the problem that won't stop giving, always stop ruining everyone fun.
Well I am always one for 100% free mods but the thing you suggested at the end there if everyone is able to access and be able to pay no matter what country they are in then I support it. Though I would probably still send people a mod for free if they requested it.
I feel like the only way Mojang could ever do a Java marketplace is if wasn't an in-game marketplace at all and was it's own website or something. Then again people might still riot about. Cool video btw, it's nice to see different perspectives on the Marketplace issue and not the same "Marketplace bad because microtransactions"
5:24 roblox takes %30 cut, just like other companies it takes less but just like minecraft it provides a game engine, handles distribution and as a bonus it has built-in monetization and it pays hosting fees instead of you and charges you nothing unless you make money.
"OH NO project did not get much from add so they were reliant on patreon." You would be surprised, that once you start make mod people actually care about, people will start asking "where is donation link", I know it first hand. it's not full time job kinds of money, but it's also not only 50$ over the lifetime of the project. Paid mods go against what mods should be IMO, possibility of that creates a possibility for bad actors that profit from ideas someone made free for all. Faithful drama was loud example of that actually steeling, but every time I decide to check the marketplace it's like if I'm watching java mods from 10 years ago but with modern clickbait thumbnails and 5$ price tag, technically different, but nothing new.
I was expecting this to be an unbearable Mojang hate rant, but instead I got legitimate criticism and a great analysis and commentary on the topic. Good job Luke!
Another problem I see with paid Java mods is the inevitable crusade by Nintendo or other corporations to destroy these websites because of a lot of mods have characters or elements from other pieces of media. There’s also the inevitable scams, AI slop, a mod with a library that also costs money or the mod doesn’t work which may cause a chain of mods that are all paid and you need to buy for the one you want to work.
When did Minecraft become $30? I got mine for $15 & the Bedrock edition was free if I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Hats off to Microsoft's "terribly performing CEO." Those were the days when most people still respected Microsoft. I heard a rumor on Reddit that Notch & Jeb forced a clause when they sold Mojang that Microsoft could not shut down Java ever. Cannot back this up though.
I find it fun that in vid about greedy big tech company's over monetizing there game, there is an ad for War thunder, a notoriously over monetized game run by a fairly greedy company.
If they get a cut, then Microsoft would push paid mods. No? And I simply do not believe that involving money would make it any better. You would get much of the same as with the modern gaming scene. Even if mods are only monetised a little, that is still far above my and many others's 0 dollar budget too
The commercialization of user generated content was, in my view, the inevitable next step after Notch sold Minecraft. Microsoft spent 2 billion dollars and wanted to do some profitmaxxing (very real term coined by Clawlike) still very scummy. Common SkyBoi W.
i think the minecraft marketplace should be like the steam workshop. witch lets anyone upload any mod of there favorite game or free and let others get it for free. im not sure how creators would make money. but i like the idea at 13:15

I dont know where he got the "roblox takes 75%" from. I work with roblox game developement and they usually take 30% with exeption of selling external gamepasses in a game, in which case the 30% cut goes to the creator of the experience.
nah but why is the editing so good
I'm almost certain it's the same reason Mojang never developed an official modding API.
Yo that mechanism song is actually so fire, do you think you can release it on newgrounds?
when skyboi uploads, i listen
This man deserves every single sub and view on YT
At least the folks in the piracy scene cracked the drm on the marketplace effectively ruining their profits.
11:23 the fact that he placed the button on top of the quit game button ☠️
5:24 roblox takes %30 cut, just like other companies it takes less but just like minecraft it provides a game engine, handles distribution and as a bonus it has built-in monetization and it pays hosting fees instead of you and charges you nothing unless you make money.
oh and roblox is free to play unlike minecraft
The DevEx conversion is not 1:1 that's why it's close to 75% If you calculate
They should just do what Bethesda did. Just have officially endorsed paid mods, and still allow people to make and download free third party mods.
"OH NO project did not get much from add so they were reliant on patreon."
You would be surprised, that once you start make mod people actually care about, people will start asking "where is donation link", I know it first hand.
it's not full time job kinds of money, but it's also not only 50$ over the lifetime of the project.
Bedrocks Modding API still doesn't go far enough in its capabilities to even support most complex Java mods
I was expecting this to be an unbearable Mojang hate rant, but instead I got legitimate criticism and a great analysis and commentary on the topic. Good job Luke!
thanks but uhhh who is luke 😭
@@skyboimc I thought your name was SkyBoiLuke for some reason lol.
Another problem I see with paid Java mods is the inevitable crusade by Nintendo or other corporations to destroy these websites because of a lot of mods have characters or elements from other pieces of media. There’s also the inevitable scams, AI slop, a mod with a library that also costs money or the mod doesn’t work which may cause a chain of mods that are all paid and you need to buy for the one you want to work.
did you watch the entire video? i addressed that already
the parkour champion comparison 😭
When did Minecraft become $30? I got mine for $15 & the Bedrock edition was free if I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Hats off to Microsoft's "terribly performing CEO." Those were the days when most people still respected Microsoft.
I heard a rumor on Reddit that Notch & Jeb forced a clause when they sold Mojang that Microsoft could not shut down Java ever. Cannot back this up though.
why cant we just have fun in a game 😭
I hate that there are little higher quality free mods/addons on bedrock cause of this.
nice job dumbing it down for minecraft players lol
I find it fun that in vid about greedy big tech company's over monetizing there game, there is an ad for War thunder, a notoriously over monetized game run by a fairly greedy company.
If they get a cut, then Microsoft would push paid mods. No?
And I simply do not believe that involving money would make it any better. You would get much of the same as with the modern gaming scene. Even if mods are only monetised a little, that is still far above my and many others's 0 dollar budget too
Hope Microsoft sees this and listens to what you had to say
the "Part 1" intro goes wild
dude good vid but damn music keeps getting blasted from my head phones
0:20 brazil mentioned
Minecraft 2 is going to go real hard 🔥🔥
MOM DAD SKYBOI JUST DROPPED!!!
yay skyboi video :D
The commercialization of user generated content was, in my view, the inevitable next step after Notch sold Minecraft. Microsoft spent 2 billion dollars and wanted to do some profitmaxxing (very real term coined by Clawlike) still very scummy. Common SkyBoi W.
LOGDOTZIP IS STILL ALIVE?!?! I USED TO WATCH HIME PLAY WITH PRESTONPLAY Z AND 09SHARKBOK LIKE 6 YEARS AGO
Blud is Getting a glow up by each video
unpopular opinion: this is good. I'd rather all of this than updates to be paid dlc.
i think the minecraft marketplace should be like the steam workshop. witch lets anyone upload any mod of there favorite game or free and let others get it for free. im not sure how creators would make money. but i like the idea at 13:15
