  • APOLOGIES for poor sound quality and wind noise-first time I had used this Panasonic Lumix camera and had expected better quality, also wind blow up just as we started filming. We have had a lot of requests for content, and for obvious reasons I can't re-make the video, so here it is for better or worse.

Since finding this channel and enjoying last seasons apples on a local market I've take two scions from what I think is a Blenheim Orange, which has been neglected at my place of work for decades, and grafted them onto some rootstock. Hopefully in a few years I will have some apples, but for now I'd just love to see some signs of life to let me know I've been successful! Thanks for the videos.

That cider tree is a beast.

You're a braver man than I am Stephan. If I had an Apple tree that large in my orchard, I would prune it about two inches above the grass.

Even with the poor sound quality it's still useful - but very frustrating! I didn't catch the bit where you mentioned the pole saw itself. What model is it? How much etc. It would be good to have these details in the text above. Also how to chose a pole saw? What's good, what's bad etc. Thanks

Great to see you back Stephen. The Dabinett and Harry Master's Jersey are huge! Are these the same cider trees that you've covered before in your cider videos (~2013-15)? Back then you were commenting on their compact size and the fact that the HMJ doesn't seem to have grown a lot. After watching that, I bought a lot of triploids (Bulmer's Norman etc) to double work my Dabinett's and Harry Master's Jersey to give them some oomph - but that might not be necessary judging by the height you've got on these two. Love the silky saws (including the polesaw) in my orchard. Thanks for the recommendation!

Do I take some of the end branches and rind graft them below the damage? Any suggestions? Bramley Dabinet and Somerset red

Wonderful to see you on. How do I deal with 10 apple trees that have been barked all around by sheep that got into my orchard?
Can I bridge the 2" with a grapht?

if completely debarked around when RIP, if not it may heal.

Oh dear! I haven't experienced that problem. I once tried to save a tree that was girdles by canker, but the grafts did not succeed. Maybe wrap it round with polythene?

    Are these on M25 rootstocks?

    • @stephenhayesuk

I can't remember. We bought them from Scott's of Merriot, near Yeovil in Somerset, sadly closed down now. I have a feeling they are on M26 but honestly can't remember. Due to leaf fall and gradient, this patch is the deepest and best soil in the orchard, and trees grow bigger here. These trees are older than the orchard, we dug them up from their original locations and brought them here in 1992.
The Tremlett's Bitter cropped zero in 2020 and so should yield at least 120 kg of fruit this year, hopefully I will film the harvest.
