Then i saw a rear light, Then i saw the sheet metal of a driver side door facing towards me. Me, in my 1987 740, slammed my brakes. No ABS, wheels locked up. Tire Screech. Tooted my horn all i could. I would've hit them, if it weren't for that they saw me and happily moved into the ditch. I was halfway off the road as well, but managed to get back up. Still had some speed as i didn't have enough time to stop. Jeez it was a scary experience. Met up with them later (we were going to the same meet), I was not very jolly. Turns out, they had apparantly spun out after braking for a moose crossing the road. Idk if i believe the story, but everyone was alright. God damn that's the closest i've ever been to dying
Used to see these cars all the time on the road here in the states. They run forever. If you ever find one of these cars with a manual transmission that is basically the holy grail because those are super rare!
On these cars, the following goes out: fuel pump, overdrive, prop shaft center bearing, water pump and air filter box and alternator regulator. Benefit from 4 point spark plugs. Yours would perform a lot faster with a steam clean through the air intake with the engine running. Mine was the 2.3 litre and was advertised as 114bhp, but it performed like it had about 160. Maybe I just got a good one idk? It used to get to 40mph in about 4 seconds.
@@bobjohnson205 The 740 I had was a 4 speed manual with (broken) overdrive. My 760 was automatic. With the overdrive, if it doesn't work, sometimes it's just the switch or the wires. Worst case would be the solenoid. I noticed 8% more economy at cruise using Shell V power and about that much more power if you floor it. It also turns out to cost 8% more so it's like a no cost boost in my thinking. It also cleans out the engine. A few bottles of Wynn''s fuel system cleaner helps too. Wynn's works the best by far of everything I tried. Redex did not work for me, but might on other cars. Ahh I remember, I stripped out the headliner and carpets to reduce weight a bit. DIdn't measure but it was probably about 40kg weight reduction all together. I found water pump cavitating the engine block surface - but I just let it be. Quality spark plug wires helped too and proper timing. I used a snap on timing light. There's up to 8% more power available with precise spark timing. If your timing was way off - big power loss. As we had a change to E5 fuel manadatory in the UK and now E10 mandatory - you can and should run more spark advance. About 1 degree for each % of ethanol in the fuel mix. Also, ethanol fuel eats rubber fuel lines. I bought genuine R9 Continental fuel hose. There is a lot of fake R9 hose for sale. 1.5m cost about £50 in 2017.
Nice video. You were right at the boot (trunk) but didn't open it up to see a huge boot, capable of carrying 3 bodies plus luggage with ease. Also important feature, special bonnet (hood) hinge for easy access during repair. I have a 1989 740 GL with 155 k (96,000 miles) on the vehicle. For those 4 cyl engines, that is just getting broken in. 400k to 500k not unusual. Speed and acceleration is just fine....then again my last car was a 71 VW so this Volvo packs a punch by comparison. Slowly becoming a classic but not as popular as the 240 series. At 35 years, you might check the radiator if still original... see possible cracks even if not leaking.
There are lots of em, just not in Australia ;) Sort of same color as mine, 400 metallic brown, right? 11:45 There are springs/shocks beneath the bumper to handle smaller hits, that's why the bumper is split right there like an accordion. It's make to "compress & de-compress"! The boxy roof shape is so the rear seat passangers can wear a hat ;) Or if you're really tall. The 700 was a luxurious car when it came out... Fun fact, the rear (trunk lid) is raised up slightly compared to the front, this is to achieve better aerodynamics!

In Sweden, most people favor manual transmission, still to this day. When it comes to these, I'd say 80% of the ones you'd find are manuals.
