This is the battle for Saipan and serves to begin a rep (deserved or not) for the Army 27th Div. Holland Smith was (properly) credited with work developing the Higgens LCVP; nothing suggests his battle command was stellar.
11:44 - It would be wonderful to get some citations regarding the 27th (Army); nothing I've read goes into the detail which is covered here and, if true, goes a long ways in explaining the failure (and thereby deserved rep) of the Division.
    15:58 - "Stuff" rolls downhill.
22:19 - Like "making" foxholes on the stony ridges of the Mediterranean littoral.
29:22 - Only the Japanese could end the war now; it had been decided at Midway and Guadalcanal. Once Hirohito decided enough of his subjects had died, he could (as he did) end the war.
33:07 - Not according to the jarheads on Okinawa later.
44:3 - The importance of the Marianas had to do with the airfields the US built there, the resultant ability to deliver nukes to Japan and finally convince Hirohito that enough of his subjects had died to end the war.
45:15 - Pretty sure it is Frank ("Downfall") who labels Hirohito as a passive-aggressive personality, and it seems a good description.
46:32 - Well, that was never really in question, and the capture was as near "bloodless" as we got in the Pacific.
54:14 - Fighting the US/Allies =/= fighting the Chinese at all.
55:38 - In what way was this force "mobile"?

what is Admiral Nagumo doing in Saipan?.. he was relieved for his failures in the Solomons and retired…

He's "in charge" but has let all of the command pass to the Japanese army general who is being referenced a lot, he was an admiral, he had no idea on how to lead a land battle

Nagumo's story is a tragic one. After the defeat at Midway, his confidence was badly shaken. He became more cautious, which was anathema to doctrine. This led to the piecemeal destruction of a disproportionate percentage of forces during the Solomans campaign, further damaging his brand. He was relieved of his command and marginalized to saipan
