Quick PSA about writing: The thing about loving books is that it often goes hand in hand with wanting to try out writing yourself sometimes. The tricky part about this is that because most book lovers have accumulated such a high standard from their consumption, they often haven't put what they've learnt into practise. This leaves you with the awkward situation of being knowledgeable enough to be aware that what you're writing is bad but not being knowledgeable enough to know how to fix it. I've gone through this (still am tbh) and im sure others have too. What you need to remember is that writing is a skill that is honed and crafted over time, not some talent you're born with, much like other art forms. The only way to get better is to try it. And after you've tried it, practise it. It's hard, but that's what makes it worth it.
I use my empty candles for a lot of things: hair elastics, make up brushes, kitchen items, I put fairy lights in them, paint them and use them for my bookmarks, as a pen holder on my desk etcetera
I'm 37 and I still look at fall as being a season of renewal! I think the crisp air just energizes me and it's the sign of the fun of summer being over and getting back to longer days indoors, etc. This is when I usually try new things, new skills, settle into better routines.
It's hilarious how Leonie processes her emotions about having no more candles in real time and we all get to watch it. Love your booktube videos and vlogs!
Tip for the candle problem: refill them yourself! ✨ I will usually keep the glasses and collect leftover wax from other candles as well, buy some wicks and do my own candles. Also you can use your scent yourself! It's really really easy believe me :)
@@pettyella6607 Yes you're right ... that's why I am usually just trying to scrape the excess wax out of the glasses and then clean them before refilling them
you can also pour a little bit of hot water into the candle jar to melt the leftover wax out! makes it a lot easier to clean @@ninaklt2682 and totally seconding refilling them yourself! you can also buy little scentless wax melts that are specifically for candle making (or even just the melts that are for a candle warmer) and add your own scent with essential oils, etc.
I get fall as a beginning because of the harvest season 🌾🍂 I know a lot of cultures see that as a beginning since harvesting means that the land is bare and ready to start fresh again 😄 (also a helpful tip with strong scented candles is to bring coffee beans and smell them after each candle - it helps neutralize the smell and keeps your nose from hurting)
Used candle jar tip! I usually clean them out and use them for storing things like pencils/bookmarks/art supplies, vases, and put small plants in them (keeping the pant in a the plastic pot and just setting it in the pretty jar). To get the wax out, I boil water in my tea kettle and fill the jar up to the brim with boiling water. It melts the left over wax and solidifies on top of the water as it cools (sometimes need to do this twice). Then if you have a wax warmer, you can use the left over wax for that!
Leonie !!! the concept of a work & fun candle is amazing! I came across it by accident, to try and get myself to love being around my favourite candle scent and trick my brain into loving to work in the space - IT WORKS !!! j'adore
I put boiling water in the candle and let the wax float to the top, then clean the glass and recycle it. You can also freeze them and use a knife to pop the wax out.
You can use boiling water to get the bottom of the wax out of your candles and you can clean out the glass jars and keep them. You can use the wax that’s left in the very bottom and wax warmers if you have that at all.
I like to use empty candle containers to store things because with fabric and elastic you can make some what of a lid. They also make for perfect wrapping for weirdly shapped gifts and then the get a pretty vase to use afterwards. Just make sure to clean them extra well.
When my candles run out I pour out the last bits of wax and clean it out and use it to store things like sunglasses, candy, hairbrushes, etc. I switch them out based on season so it always fits the theme
this is my third autumn after finishing uni and i feel exactly the same way about it feeling like the start of a new year!! even more than new year’s eve i think although that also feels like a place for new beginnings
Congratulations on that speech! You can be so proud of you for doing something that scared you. Same with the writing class! This video is an actual inspiration for trying new things 😊 And of course for autumn in general ❤
This was very fun and calming to watch, as someone going through a literal war right now, I appreciate the comfort your videos bring, can't wait for the next vlog🩷
A company called Arbor Made makes refillable candles! I have one, and they send the wax separate from the jar, and once the candle has finished the jar allows you to pop out the old wax and put in the new. It's really neat!
And here in Italy autumn is like a shiny pokémon: there's summer, then abrupt winter, no in-between anymore. Halfway through september and we still hit almost 30°C where I live + lots of humidity all year long. Watching vlogs of places where autumn exists and is coming in strong makes me feel at ease, the gray skies really give me hope for a good, cold winter this year, where I may be able to put on my warmest and fanciest clothes and drink a cup of warm tea/chocolate in a cozy blanket :)
For the soot problem with the candle, trim the wick down each time before you light it, even at the start of a new one. And if you notice it being sooty again while burning, blow it out and trim it again. Also, I melt the wax out at the end and then recycle the glass jar, messy work, but it makes me feel better knowing it's not all going straight in the landfill.
Leonie I bought scented candles with wooden wick in Action - both smel.... well, one is gingerbread, and the second one is cinnamon. I was surprised by that crakling, but got used to it, and I also burn a candle when I work on something.
i just re watched you last video, so excited to watch this one!!! (also, idk if you figure what was causing the fruit flies problem but in my experience it can be that one of your neighbors have a lot of rotting fruit or a compost pile, both cause a lot if fruit flies especially in summer)
It's finally getting cool and cozy where I live, so this was the perfect reminder to start burning candles again. 💛 I personally love woodsy scents like pine. It makes my room smell like the forest.
When I'm done with a candle and I want to keep the jar, I just pour boiling water into it to melt the wax away and then run it through the dishwasher. I like to use them to store q-tips and cotton balls and other odds and ends, or as a propagation vessel for plants :)
The fact I'm watching this video the FIRST day of Autumn! Definitely my favorite season and your vlog gives me all the autumnal vibes I loved it so much!! I'm so happy you did so well at your speech!!
Congrats on doing such a big speech, that’s super cool! (Although 100% nerve wracking i totally agree). This video was such a comfort and came at the perfect time, thank you for all your work ❤
awe i loved this video! :') also huge congrats on the google talk that's wild ♡!! fall totally feels like an invitation for new beginnings!! almost like the year's second wind
Congratulations on being asked to speak. Autumn is my favorite time of year. As life progresses and your habits change September won't feel so momentous. 🍁🍁🍁🍁
Tip for empty candle containers. If I like the shape of the container I will wash it out/sanitize it and use it to store other things. I keep cutting swabs/balls in them in the bathroom. In a sucker for a glass container/jar/bottle and I always try to repurpose them if I can.
Tip for the candles - you can go to a craft store to buy new wax and wicks for your diy candles. They also sell candle scents separately. If you have used your candle up, you can pour hot water right into the jar, the wax will melt and rise to the top of the surface, it is easy to remove it that way.
Hi! I'm Spanish and I think you should know that your channel and your voice is very nice for learning and practicing my English!!! Thank u so much. I love your vibes and your channel❤
When I finish a candle, I pour boiling water in it, wait for the it to cool and the wax will float to the top and be easier to remove, then I either recycle or reuse the jar if its an especially good jar. I just throw away the spare wax, but I want to get a wax warmer to repurpose the wax since it still smells great and I feel bad wasting any!
For the candles I always put some boiling water in there to take out the remaining wax. After a second rinse you can pot little plants or propogate avocados (Albert Heijn avocados and mangoes are fun to give a try) in them or put pencils/annotation tools😊
I graduated from college four years ago, and yes, I still look at fall that way. Maybe it has something to do with the feeling of relief that accompanies the end of a really long, really hot, really humid New England summer, or maybe I'm just an academic to my core!
I really love autumn and also I’m obsessed with your cosy autumn vlogs ❤ I was in the Netherlands in July and I thought what an autumnal country even in the middle of the summer! I hope you’ll have a wonderful season, love from Türkiye ❤❤
If you pour boiling or near boiling water into a scented candle container and then let it cool, the wax should float to the top and form a disk. You can then put this in a wax warmer or just throw it out. The candle container should clean up with soap and water and then you can reuse it or recycle it with your other glass recycling.
Same as you use old porcelain mugs as pots, you can use candles holders as pots! Just make sure to put your soil into a plastic pot with holes first (can't remember the name for them in English). Also, use them as a jar for anything you like, I use them as sort of organizers in the drawers for things like scrunchies, earphones, coins, random bits and bobs. (to wash the leftover wax you can freeze the candle for some time, then scrape the wax out)
bc of the empty candles: you can buy wax and a scent that is safe to burn and meld it on the stove and refill the candle. it is pretty easy but idk how to clean the pot afterwards xd
Thank you so much for your response! I really love your content. It relaxes me, and I like hearing about the books I should read or can bypass. There's a calm in your content and aesthetic that helps me get calm. 😁 Keep doing what you do! 👍
this is my 13th year without going back to any kind of school in September and I still definitely feel like the new year starts here. and I love it and I celebrate it :)
if you want to take the time to get all of the leftover wax out, wash the soot off and take off the label you could reuse your candle glasses as just regular glasses to drink out of. i especially think the blue colour would look awesome and then after a while you’d have a cupboard filled with different coloured/shaped/sized drinking glasses 😊
I actually always use the candle glasses for plant propagation. And I've been buying two new candles every year from Brandt (in Utrecht!!) so if you don't know it yet that's a little tip :)
For the scented candles, i usually would empty the container from the wax then using it as pen holder or something! You can remove the wax by adding hot water to it and then it would rise to the top :D It always feels like a nice memory to look at these empty containers and remember the times i watched that candle burn in
I reuse my empty candles jars around my house as containers. First you put the candle jar in the freezer only for a few hours, take it out and gentle pry out the remaining wax with a spoon. Leave the jar on the counter until it warms back up to room temperature (you don't want to put cold glass into warm water). The next step I do is fill a bowl or the sink (if I'm doing a bunch), with warm soapy water. Let your jars soak for a few hours. This should do two things. First, help scrub off any remaining wax residue and second, peel off the jar paper label. Now, you should have a clean pretty jar (hopefully you kept the lid). I use mine in the bathroom for cotton swabs/balls/etc or in the kitchen to store wood picks, kitchen tools. Oh and if they are clear jars you can use them as little terrariums! So many uses really. The hardest part is just cleaning them out.

Autumn will always feel like the new year. It never goes away. New Years feels like an unwanted birthday but September is a time of hope.
fun fact - the Jewish new year is in September!
On point! I thought it was just me😭
This September 1st felt like a fresh start like New Year's is supposed to feel
I feel the exact same way!

thank you for sharing this!! have you read Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, it reminded me of this
@julietbeck2945 no, unfortunately I haven't. But it sounds interesting!
I really needed to hear this. Like, you've genuinely healed a part of my self-loathing as a fledgling writer. Thank you for your comment!

i live in a country with a tropical climate so i know i can always count on u for the cozy autumn vibes 🍁🫶🏽 ur videos r a blessing 🥹
Years after graduation and not even having a typical summer holiday, September still feels like the start of a new year.

In Germany it was hot too but kinda cool in the morning. One day we started with 15 degrees in the morning and had 29 degrees midday
You can use the empty candle jars as tealight holders, especially if you get some glass paint so you can decorate it to glow nice colours
i always enjoy your vlogs especially during fall they're so cosyyy

Still waiting for autumn to arrive in Belgium it has been so hot 🥵 But love your vlog it gave all the fall vibes 🍵🍂🧡🍁
such a cozy video to watch while winding down from the day! also, definitely wanna see more vlogs!
your vlogs are my FAVOURITE
Your video definitely encouraged me to go grab some candles and burn it while I am writing 🤗
Your videos are such a safe space, Leonie! ❤ I just love these cozy & wholesome vibes - thanks for each and every video you post :)
I actually always use the candle glasses for plant propagation. And I've been buying two new candles every year from Brandt (in Utrecht!!) so if you don't know it yet that's a little tip :)
these vlogs are the best way to start a cozy morning! ❤️
Many seasons, reasons, life times, Forever People meet . Good to growing together. .
what a gorgeous thumbnail!! so stoked for autumn!! ive been ready since last winter!!!
you had me laughing out loud in a coffee shop!! definitely going to bring more candles into my life.
For the scented candles, i usually would empty the container from the wax then using it as pen holder or something!
You can remove the wax by adding hot water to it and then it would rise to the top :D
It always feels like a nice memory to look at these empty containers and remember the times i watched that candle burn in
watching this from the southern hemisphere where our days consist of 40 degrees celsius weather, but i’m loving the vibes anyway
One of the glasses from a candle was my jewelers “box” and now it’s a sugar pot
Yesterday, I spent the whole day waiting for this video! So pls do more ,lof that, I love it so much! I am already looking forward to the next
I finished Uni in 2017 and I still see September as the beginning of the year 😊 I hope it never changes
I loved this video! So calming and I like your whole vibe!
Those candles sound amazing.
watched this video while it was pouring rain! absolutely prefect 🌧️🍂
