  • Maid behind the Bar is one of the best known Irish reels. In this fiddle lesson I show the basic melody, with suggestions for appropriate ornamentation and bowing technique. I use on-screen sheet music, and a free copy of Maid Behind the Bar is available to subscribers (see below).
There are plenty more videos on Irish fiddle tunes and techniques elsewhere on The Fiddle Channel

Another great tune worth learning to play by everyone, fiddler or mandolin, tenor banjo, guitar. You explain the tricky parts very well. So thanks, Chris. Best regards,. Bob

Serious questionis it better to keep your little finger dead straight, curve it or lift it completely, great playing by the way

Nice work Chris :) One point: you play the tune with swing, but it could alternatively be played straight and emphasize the off-beat. I think that depends on who you're playing with, and the regional derivation of the version - would you agree?

Hi Brendan, good to hear from you. You're right, I should have said that it doesn't have to be played with swing. Some reels are commonly played either way, with some it seems that they either suit swing or they don't. I'd be very interested to know if anyone has a theory as to why this is- whether it's a regional thing as you suggest, or whether something in the rhythm of the tune lends itself to swing or backbeat.

@@TheFiddleChannel I think it was regional when styles developed in areas that were relatively isolated from each other over centuries. The Donegal style, Clare style etc. But now it's probably down to how your main influences on RUclips do it, lol!
