You should always start at the end closest to you, and push the blade away from you. Don't ever pull it towards you while you're making a cut. You can end up seriously injured.

Yes and reading this while watching him cut the 4x4 that hand is way too close, give your fingers more than a couple inches and keep those hands away from the blade! You can also use clamps

Jason J I recently lost the majority of my finger tip to the very same mistake. My hand was plenty far away right up until the work got yanked up and pulled my hand in to the blade. Healed now, lesson learned...

Yup, and you need to allow the blade to stop before lifting it. You could end up shooting a chunk of wood at high velocity, kickback is another possibility. I know the 4x4 wasn't going anywhere but if you do it that way with a 4x4, you'll do it with smaller boards. I realize that's a hard habit to break, I still catch myself doing it from time to time, but if you get into the habit of letting the blade stop before you raise the saw when you're cutting in situations that aren't likely to have kickback, you're more likely to do it when you're in situations where kickback is possible. Just a tip.

How did you not get through that 4x4 with one cut?

    • @eltorocal

10" blade... but then there is the coupler and the thru-bolt (center hub/armature that holds the blade on) ...making for about 3.86" cutting depth.

You want to push the blade away from you not toward yourself. Don’t want to get hurt bud.

put a sacrificial piece of wood behind your 4x4 and you'll cut through, too close to the fence.
