I actually had this discussion with a friend earlier today and here’s what I told him:
1: Breathing techniques are an actual thing IRL both for martial arts and therapy amongst other things. Granted there is no irl breathing technique for channeling the power of the sun via the vibrations in our blood, but there *are* breathing techniques for speeding or slowing your bloodflow.
All that being said I like how surprisingly close to reality it is.
2: It requires the use of martial arts (at least in the case of fighting a vampire or pillar man) and I love martial arts. Another facet of this point is that it can be learned by anyone as opposed to stands which you may or may not receive and if you do its pretty random. I generally prefer power systems that rely on skill as opposed to luck but thats just me.
3: Is its extremely versatile and can be used in a ton of ways. Any form of liquid and even some solids (i think) can be manipulated if you’re skilled enough with Hammon. We see this very prominently in Battle Tendency. Stands are pretty versatile too dont get me wrong, but they generally have more limitations and as was shown by Dio’s stand users several require a certain amount of setup. Hammon is every bit the thinking man’s power as a stand is.
All that being said: I dont dislike stands. I think they’re really cool. I just like Hammon better personally.
Not trying to say Hammon is objectively better. Just that I personally prefer it.

This is a copy-paste of my comment but I'd really like to add on.
Stands are like pokemon. While yes, you can be infinitely more creative and have more personalized abilities, Your story essentially has to shape around the abilities of Stands and not the users. There are some stands that you simply cannot fight.
Jotaro would've lost if he didnt reveal at the end that he was also able to stop time. Kakyoin tried his best and simply couldnt do anything.
Part 6 team literally lost because they simply couldnt match the Heaven at its peak regardless of strategy.
Polnareff almost died twice against Diavolo because the guy has a broken ability.
Your story MUST shape around the ''pokemons'' of each villain/hero.
With Hamon, your story has to shape around your characters. As they grow, so does their hamon. Some characters have more potent hamon like Jonathan and Ultimate Kars, Who used it recklessly to overpower the enemy. Other characters like Caesar and Joseph relied on their tecnique or wits to outmanuever/outsmart the enemy.
Hamon has a wide variety of uses and it is extremely effective as a weapon even against normal people. We know Caesar could kill Joseph when they first fought, a normal person couldnt get out of that bubble.
Hamon can be used for precognition, hypnosis, Levitation, Energy transfer, forcing Liquid to behave abnormally, forcing matter to behave abnormally (as with the hair example), Can be used to heal self, heal others, has different magnetic poles, easy to learn but terrifyngly hard to master.
I find Hamon to be more interesting. You can always blabber about a random poke-stand that has ''Kill everything'' ability, with their enemy having ''kill everything shield''. But you have to get creative and smart with hamon to use it. And it does have many abilities to pull from.

Stands make it so each user has their style of fighting, but every person is generally pretty narrow in their fighting capabilities.
What I loved about Joseph's arc (Bloodyb stream and pillar men and all that) was that although each character had their own unique way of fighting, each fight was a constant back and forth of the combatants Uno reversing each other. It was great!
Seeing Joseph grow and develop an understanding of Hamon was great! Heck, seeing Jonathan and Dio fight was a joy too!
I completely understand why someone would prefer Stands. I still enjoy Hamon for what it offered, and I'm glad we had that too. In the age of vampires and pillar men, it made more sende than simply Stands. Honestly, I think most Stand users would've been dead on the spot; even Jotaro and Diavolo would be in trouble. And we saw what the pillar men did with the vampires. I don't think Dio would stand (hehe) much of a chance either. It was a different world back then!
We've even seen how easily vampires were brushed off in Stardust Crusaders. Gone is the immortality and infectious blood and heads with tentacles. It's simply not the same anymore.

Right I mean look at naruto, we saw all the versatile ways chakra could be used, or in dragon ball we seen Ki could be used to make living constructs like Goku's dragon fist or Gotenks kamikaze ghosts, imagine all the epic hamon battles we could've seen if Araki stuck with Hamon, it could've been used as a support healing characters or giving them boosts or we it could've been used to control plants and trees since it's life energy, or we could've seen it be used to control the elements like fire, water, lightning, snow and ice, air, some characters could've learned to fly with it or used on peoples minds to create illusions, or It could control people and there actions, or hamon could steal away people's life aging them or hamon could've grown extra limbs and bones and harden those bones so they could be used as weapons, so many versatile ways it could've been applied or in Naruto we have Onoki the kage of the hidden stone, he had a kekkei genkai called particle effect that wiped people's literal atoms, some very very powerful hamon users could've had such an ability, or hamon could be used to vibrate yourself like the flash allowing you to phase through walls and objects or have projectiles phase through you.

"Stands make it so each user has their style of fighting, but every person is generally pretty narrow in their fighting capabilities."
I disagree with this one, there are so many stands that force the heros to beat them in a unsual way, and use their stands with creativity. Araki expands the possibilities of the main JoJos Stand, Jotaro is pretty straight foward but Josuke, Giorno and Jolyne have stands that can be used in different and creative ways
BUT, i wish we could see Hamon being used with stands, or at least, see Joseph use more Hamon in part 3 or 4.

@@mateusmarinho6941 Fair enough! I might've worded my thoughts poorly or simply be of another opinion than you XD
What I meant is that I view Stands as somewhat similar to Pokémon. Some matchups are better than others. When a Stand isn't equipped to deal with a certain opponent, its user will have to adapt or suffer a loss. I guess it's just that there are scenes, like in Stardust Crusaders, where a younger Joseph easily would've won through use of Hamon.
You're telling me he could not have easily beaten D'Arby?

I don't have a problem with Hamon getting sidelined to Stands because the sheer scope of stand abilities is more interesting. However, since it was demonstrated that a stand can have synergy with Hamon, it makes we wish that got explored a little more. Didn't need to show up often or at all outside of an arc where Kars returns and develops his own stand. That would be pretty awesome imho.

It was so cool to see Joseph fight using an exploding Hamon cactus, or seeing Cesar literally throw razor sharp Hamon bubbles. By what I understand, Hamon are better power system by feeling more "natural" and less gimmicky but great if used creatively, Stands however are a more interesting system because of their "limits" and specific set of rules having a vast arsenal of unique ability. Stands feel artificial and pretty convenient story wise, Hamon on the other side have much more sense. Hamon can however powercreep other hamon users overtime in term of raw power, Stands are powercreep proof powers so there's rarely a gap between Stand users. They aren't really one better than another, they both have their strong and weak points. It's a matter of preference.

      - In part 3, Joseph could've used hamon more as his primary battle mechanic having more fights with Joseph.
      - in part 4, Joseph could've teaches some basic hamon to Josuke, giving a boost to crazy Diamond while metaphorically accepting Joseph as his dad.
      - in part 5, some enemies could've been hamon users, also the gang could've visited the hamon temple from part 2 to awaken his hamon and enhance GE

I don't mind the focus changing from hamon to stands, I just think hamon got done dirty in part 3. Like you said, hamon is very versatile and Joseph had access to an arsenal of hamon techniques during part 3, but it hardly gets used at all. For example, in episode 6 of part 3 when Anne is swimming through shark infested water, Jotaro jumps in to save her. Joseph can literally WALK ON WATER. Not once does it occur to him that he can simply run over to Anne and pick her up.

Its a shame hamon kinda just dissapeared after part 2. It was briefly in part 3 but not for that long. It would have been nice to see people using stands and hamon combined or some people using hamon and some using stands. I feel hamon does reflect the user quite well, every user had completely different moves which were unique to them. Hamon keeping the user young and was able to do alot of healing to the user would have been very useful for all the characters in jojo, lisa lisa was 50 but looked in her 20s because of hamon, this would have been great for joseph in parts 3,4 and jotaro in part 6.

I fully acknowledge that Stands have more power and variety than Hamon ever will. That said, because Hamon starts small and simple and can become varied and powerful through forging a deeper understanding and developing individual techniques, it draws my interest more.

    • @yeastofthoughtsmind9623
      @yeastofthoughtsmind9623 3 года назад +47

Well the difference I see is that while Stands have more variety as a power *type,* hamon has more variety in each individual user.
An individual stand user typically has one ability (some have more, like KK having time erase and epitaph, or Kira having 3 types of bombs), while an individual hamon user can use many different hamon abilities. The only real limit on it is the users creativity.
However, this can actually be used as an argument against hamon. Because it is such a general "energy type" ability, you could run into power scaling issues like ki in Dragon Ball or chakra in Naruto.
Stands usually having one ability allows Araki to keep the style of fights where *how* you use your power is more important than *what* your power is, without having to worry about a constantly increasing power scale.

    • @DoctorWhoNow01
      @DoctorWhoNow01 3 года назад +17

Hamon is more unique. Stands make the show generic and allows effortless writing. Oh this character is strong? • @SolStryker

From a storytelling perspective, the combat system centred around hamon had an elegant simplicity to it. The possible actions that could be taken by the characters were more restricted which forced them to be creative to obtain the upper hand through other means. Johnathan and Joseph had to find ways to avoid getting hit by the overwhelming physical strength of the vampires and pillarmen while finding an opening to land a clean hamon strike. On the other hand, vampires and the pillarmen had to find ways to avoid being touched by hamon. There is a certain satisfaction to watching the characters think outside the box while being bound by the relatively tight restrictions of hamon-based combat.
The combat system centred around stands has a broader scope of possibilities. This allows the writer to be more creative with assigning abilities which vastly expands the possible natures the fights could have. Part 3 had everything from direct fisticuffs between Jotaro and Dio to video games. However, the characters still have to think creatively, be it with their stand abilities or general tactics, to gain an advantage since most of the combatants enter the fights at maximum power.
In either case, affording the characters the opportunity to be creative made the fights interesting to watch. The elegant simplicity of hamon was refreshing compared to the more intricate systems used by many shows today. On the other hand, the near boundless possibilities of stands prevent the series from getting predictable.
I believe if the series had stuck to hamon only, it would have become harder and harder to design creative fights, although not impossible (Part 2 saw Joseph channelling hamon through all manner of objects after all). As a series that wants to have continued expansion of the lore and universe, stands are a more sensible choice. However, saying that hamon was merely “pretty cool” when it was around does a great disservice to the creativity of the fights Araki designed within the confines of hamon rules.

But, i don't think hamon could be the main focus of another part. As Araki said himself, seeing a third Jojo train his hamon would be boring, there's a reason they made Joseph a natural and only trained to perfect it. Because that's kinda how most Stand fights start, "I need to figure out what X Stand does so I can beat it." and I feel characters would be so used to that mindset that they would be so confused and at a disadvantage fighting a Hamon user.

It’s been a while since I watched the Hamon era, so I’m not sure how applicable this is to those fights, but I’ve noticed that Stand battles seem to often be written a bit like puzzles and mysteries for the characters and audience to solve, so I think how well the puzzle is crafted and how much sense the characters finding the solution makes are some of the determining factors in how good a fight is.

@@langleysenterprise5134 that's pretty much the reason. Hamon is basically a cultivation technique that allows indirect usage of stand ability. There was no special characters that took it further or explored different possiblities with it.
Hamon and Spin is basically the same thing. They belong to the same root. However spin was developed much further than hamon ever did because spin is used against varying foes while hamon is against vampires.
There is still uniqueness in hamon and Spin. It coveres the most ground and two hamon abilities still relies on the person.
If we tried to include hamon in the future. We would need to make sure they are still powerfull enough and expressive enough to be included.
Joseph is a good example of hamon reflecting it's user. Joseph will never go with strength but cunningness.
Jonathan was basicly a saint thus he is capable of spreading life.
The best thing that could be done would be an fairly ordinary person being added into an organization since all hamon converges to a one (namely vines healing, magnetism etc.) This would allow hamon be passed from people to people without diminishing. This would be especially important for Speedwagon Foundation.

There's a brilliance in how the stands work in how it's a complete mystery and the character needs to come up with a battle plan on the spot whilst also trying to figure out what the stand is. A great example of this is the boat fight in part 5, the entire concept was just figuring out what the hell was going on. Hamon has a wonderful simplicity in it where you can be really creative, but with stand, it takes that creativity to another lever. You need to be creative to win in jojo. (Unless you're Jotaro)

You get my point it could've had so many applications!

Hamon users might individually learn some hamon hacks or some vampires might have a trick or two, but overall there isnt much a hamon user or vampires can do that others of their kind couldnt hypothetically copy. I imagine the fights wouldve eventually felt less special and thats why Araki made Stands. I remember Stands being described as a person's fighting spirit and it feels very apt for what they are. I really like how certain aspects of Stands can kind of imply about their users, like how Crazy Diamond's healing implies that their was something in Josuke's life he wanted to mend when he was young, or how Cheap Trick's user likely had self-destructive paranoia.

The history and tactics surrounding Hamon is what made it interesting. It had bounded rules and specific purposes, but having those things opened the door to creative solutions to problems while remaining within those rules. It's the same reason why many artists choose to restrict themselves to a specific color palette rather than just trying to use any color that comes to mind; with color theory, consistency and compliment trump freedom and whim.
Stands obviously have infinite potential because there are no rules, but with that comes the possibility for infinite jank, infinite ass-pulls, infinite deus ex machinas for both the good guys and bad. Examples include Jotaro and Dio basically having identical stands (which wasn't a thing before or since, correct me if I'm wrong) and Yoshikage Kira randomly getting a time-warp ability out of nowhere. Stands have no general rules (the range thing is broken multiple times), only rules specific to that stand, and then those rules too get broken or changed last-minute to increase the drama. "The enemy's stand can shoot infinite amounts of cum and is unbeatable, but as fortune would have it the clock reads 1 minute before midnight on September 30th, meaning in a matter seconds it will become November which means you can no longer nut, meaning... I win."
I dunno, obviously you can take my opinion with a grain of salt as an anime-only dude, but as of P5, stands just don't have any magic left in them for me. You literally can't expect what a stand will be capable of, but without expectations, nothing can be surprising. Every stand reveal just leaves me blank-faced, since nothing can really be as obtuse, overpowered or janky as Gold Experience and its "turn my tooth into a jellyfish so I can drink piss" power.

actually, that's kinda why I don't like power systems like stands post part 3 for the most part this includes other series the main issue is the threat feeling artificial and forced as it's really easy to make one-off over-complicated ability then never have them used again because there to useless outside there one-off upper hand.
then there's the ass pull power-ups and changes to abilities because they were too restrictive to be used narratively I actually think having a more limited toolbox actually requires the user to be genuinely smarter having cesear and joseph have wildly different toolboxes based off of only pure application and master is actually interesting to me.

Well from what I gathered, the main thing that makes Hamon super versatile, is how you can utilize it within the environment (like passing the force through walls or boiling up water) as well as its effects on certain tools (amplifying the kinetic energy of cacklers, or makeshift tools via some kind of magnetism). It may have started off as just some brand of monster slaying martial arts, but they could have very easily broaden the horizons by mixing it up with conventional ninjitsu, circus stunts, military tactics or even magic tricks, and then play around with the idea that many people from different cultures could have invented their own variations of Hamon simply because of how natural solar energy is and how humans in general tend to like to experiment with different practices.
Not to say that Stands aren't full with potential themselves, it's just a shame how they decided to just drop Hamon for something completely different, all without properly exploring how those two power systems would interact with each other, let alone flesh out Hamon at all beyond the things done in Part 2.

Hamon is life energy, which as can be done in fun way but it's nothing really unusual in manga and anime, your go to magic powers that have no known boundaries and aren't super consistent. While with stands, each one is unique, there are certain rules but they usually serve more as guidelines as many stands actually are exception to some of them. Meaning that there can be done many unique abilities and designs of stands. The fact that for most cases they aren't just straight forward stronger stand = win, as it usually ends up in shounens shows that it's good power system. If hamon stayed there is big chance that it could end as this always scaling stuff, where character keeps on getting stronger and stronger and stronger. My personal opinion is that training arcs or episodes are the worst things in the shounen mangas. Showing characters train and then become stronger is lazy way to portrait growth, because it often does not come with character development. I can excuse it in cases where character actually learns it's powers because of that, but just being put through grueling training often seems pointless and affects pace of the series. Each user has to find inovative ways to use it in various situations, to the point that each particular technique is rarely used twice throughout the two arcs. The main downside is that it honestly makes no sense. You get pseudo-scientific explanations for how it works, but it's complete gibberish. My main regret is that Joseph never used hamon in part 3 even though it could've been useful several times, especially since his stand has almost no combat ability. Because the entire show is stupid and the writing is done by children.

The issue is, if we take Araki's words literally, ONLY a stand can harm another stand. Since all of these threats in part 3 were, with the exception of dio, purely stand threat, his hamon wouldn't do anything versus them. Just the hamon infused chainmail that Joseph makes to try to bait Dio, that was really the only application of Hamon available in part 3.

@@HammondSoul808s I think that it is kinda like, "only stands can beat other stands" but stands can use other things to facilitate their way into beating other stands. It looks like some stands have used some objects to try to defeat other stands

I understand the position of seeing Hamon as obsolete but having a character use it along side a stand could be interesting. Maybe a side character who uses the healing abilities of Hamon and they lead a sort of healing meditation place and their stand takes the injuries of others and puts it on them.
