- Every NHL fan knows that David Pastrnak is an absolute STUD! But did you know he was taken 25th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft? How could 24 teams completely overlook his raw talent. Well, in todays video - we find out what happened to the 24 players drafted before Pasta.

I did some research and came across a post draft evaluation of Pastrnak in the Bleacher Report. He was definitely seen as a potential elite scorer in the NHL, but the concerns were 1) Could he adapt to a different style of game in the NHL compared to the Czech Republic and Sweden where he was playing before?, 2) a tendency to disappear in tighter checking games, which are more common here than in Europe and 3) his size. Here is the quote from the article: "At 5'10" and weighing 165 pounds, there's just no way for the shifty forward to be competitive against the larger, meaner and faster players that populate the league." That does seem a bit harsh to me.
Hindsight is always 20/20. There were some European hits in that first round and some busts. I don't think the Panthers, Oilers , Leafs and Red Wings regret their picks. It has to be infuriating for rooters of the Canucks who drafted another European right winger who turned out to be a bust and then took McCann right before Pastrnak.

It makes me crazy when these FOOLS talk too small! Many of the best players in the game are “small!” Crosby is under 6’ although 200 lbs, McDavid is under 200 pounds, Kutcherov is listed at 5’10” 185, Patrick Kane, Brad Marchand, the 3 Hughes bros, Panarin 175, Pettersson in Van 175 at 6’2” he looks like a hockey stick!, Marner 180, Point 5’10” 175…most of these guys are top 15 in points right now. This size bs is just that…bs!
Pastrnak is 6’0’’ not 5’10’’

Although there were some very good players in this draft…Ekblad was a solid choice…Pasternak is ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT the 2nd best player from it, can’t go wrong either way with Pasternak and Draisaitl at #1 and 2. It was a pretty damn good draft year that’s for sure!
Damn. This was a very good draft with some huge misses but mostly excellent first round
Pekka Rinne will always be the best value pick in the modern league to me. Starting four-time All star netminder, taken in the 8th round pick 258. One of the leagues only goalies to have a goal stat as well!
Oh Pekka! Forgot about him. I feel like a lot of goalie greats come from late rounds. So hard to predict them.

Gotta throw Datsyuk and Zetterberg in there too. 171 and 210 overall respectively. Wings hit the jackpot with those two.
@@chadlevitan7886 their 2008 cup run squad is easily one of my favorite rosters of all time. Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterburg, Chelios & Kronwall + many many more. Than behind them was Osgood, Jimmy Howard & Hašek between the pipes!? Holy mackerel what a team.
@@alexei1195 I was spoiled enough to be a Wings fan of around 8-10 yo when the Wings won their 90's championships, and then get the 02 and 08 ones on top. I love all those teams for different reasons. Pekka was a monster though too! Huge and athletic and technical. Kinda the ideal modern goalie.

I am sure that most teams in the top 10 would keep the picks they had, besides the NHL history has a boat load of late picks (Patrick Roy 51st) or non picks (Martin Saint Louis, never drafted) that have done way better than the previous picks, Pastrnak is just 1 of many.

I'm sorry what...Ekblad has never hit 65 points. He has hit 68 and 71 PIMs.... but his career high in points is 57. Still an incredible defensemen.

larkin is one of if not the most underrated player from that draft without him its been proven the red wings dont do well hes the heart and soul of the team put him on other stacked teams and hed esily get 80+ points a season

That's why sometimes trading B prospects or hoping guys pane out. Isn't always beat option exspecially if your making run at cup.
If your sure they are going to project keep them but if rated high they can only lose value and if your able get a established player even signed with term you should do it.

I simply disagree with the core argument of the video. A steal can’t happen in the first round, unless it involves a team literally putting themselves in a position to draft even higher than they were originally supposed to. the Boston Bruins had no way of drafting anyone else before this pick, and there were obviously even some teams that hadn’t made theirs yet. That’s a really privileged position to be in for you to still call it a steal. I’m not saying a steal has to be a 17th rounder hall of famer every time, but the lines are not so blurred that your incredible video is gonna convince me you’re right on this one lol. have a good one

Yes. You are clueless. A late 1st round pick who became an elite superstarer is a HUGE steal. Do you not realize most late 1sts only become depth players or worse? Getting an elite player as late as 24 is massive steal.
@@alessandroscuderi7300 99% of the ENTIRE draft EVERY YEAR will never go on to see meaningful ice time in an NHL game. that’s the hard truth. there are only so many available spots within the 32 teams at any given point in time. that also goes for people selected above 24th. when the 191st overall pick doesn’t go on to have an elite career, we don’t call that a bust. similarly, when the 24th overall pick is putting up team leading numbers, they’re not suddenly a steal. they were chosen in the first fkn round! honestly, if we’re being completely fair here, anybody who contributes in any meaningful way to a team’s season could be viewed as a steal. it’s one way or the other. besides, the videos creator already admitted that they threw the term around kinda loosely. it’s a textbook case of clickbait, which I can completely respect. but let’s not act like 24th overall is ever truly a STEAL. I mean it’s not like the other teams didn’t know about Pasta! they just gambled on somebody else. and it worked out for some of them, too.

Dal colle no. 4? i saw him play as a gennie. Dude just lumbered around out there, never got involved or could make players better. Once hockey canada cut dal colle that was the flag to avoid him. Had a terrible return to jrs. including last season split between gennies/fronts. Isles could have taken willie n., eihlers, fiala, even pastarnak instead of dal colle. Total bust pick by snow.
