My sister who has been driving a Model 3 for 4 years got a Mach E after driving the Y, the Volvo and the Audi. After listening to her thoughts (she is not a huge car person just likes a nice car) my conclusion is that the Ford is a better CAR from the casual drivers point of view while the Tesla is generic feeling, noisy, and Tesla has the reputation for exaggerating their actual mileage which bothered her, but also the leader in technology. One thing the legacy automakers have going for them is they have been building cars for quite some time and know how to build a car where Tesla is still figuring that out. She paid a lot more for the Mach E GT than a Tesla Y Performance so there is that. Anyway, I wonder if Tesla will hit a wall with buyers. I drove her car and it was premium feeling compared to a Tesla for sure. I do think Juniper will help address some of the concerns I heard from my sister.

Legacy automakers have no clue how to build an EV. It's a completely different product than an ICE car.
Audi in 2016 after analysing Model X: "It's hard to admit, but they did everything right."
Volkswagen in 2018 after analysing Model 3: "Compact, upgradable, fully integrated and modular, easy access, great protection and safety, cheap and very clever designed in a lot of details. We could have never built a car like that."
Toyota after analysing the Model Y last year: "Taking the skin off the Model Y, it was truly a work of art. It's unbelievable."

I test rode a Model 3 Performance and a Mach-E GT... The Mustang was noticeably slower. Like, a lot. The Tesla was scary fast, and the Mustang was good right off the line, and then... meh... Nice car, but for a $72k sticker price, I couldn't justify it...

So the 24 mach e took away the 5 second limiter that made them slow after the initial launch. They also improved the battery to charge 20% faster and have more range. So I'm definitely waiting for the 24 model drag race between the 2.

There is a video from another Tesla centric channel where he interviewed one of the senior engineers on the Mach E team, and he said they originally planned on it being an Electric Explorer, but they realized they were not going to be able to make enough of them, so they chosenthe Mustang for great heritage and the fact they sell similar numbers in Mistangs as they planned on being able to build Mach Es. So you can see where the styling and sizing of the vehicle would be perfect for an Explorer.

As a '22 Model 3P owner, I would say the Mach E has objectively better build quality and feels a bit more upscale inside. My bro in law had one for a little over a year until it bricked and Ford couldn't fix it so they bought it back...another story for another time...but in terms of which car I'd rather drive, that's easy. I'd take my M3P over anything else in its class, in spite of it's minor flaws and shortcomings. It's a hoot to drive, easy to live with, has way more power (Mach E GT is comparable in power but can't compare in performance to the 3P, esp at higher speeds where the Mach dials back power considerably) and looks better, IMO. Looks are subjective, but I prefer the low-slung rocket-egg profile of the 3P. It goes without saying that Tesla has the best charging infrastructure available. Now that they are allowing other mfrs to use their chargers that's less of a selling point for Tesla, but I still feel very happy with my choice and would not take the Mach E or anything else in this price range over the 3P.

I own a Mach-E and my adult son owns a MY long range. Your review nailed it -- the Mach-E is the better car in almost every respect until you have to charge it on a road trip. Then it simply sucks, or, more accurately, CCS charging sucks. I do 99% of my driving around or near my town, charge at home, and have 10.8 KW of solar on my roof. I have charged the Mach-E from public CCS chargers a total of 8 times, and they were always slow -- usually delivering only 25-45 KW either due to their design limitation or due to being de-rated down from the listed 350 KW. Also, at every stop 1 or 2 of the typically 4 chargers were inoperable. I was just about to sell the Mach-E and buy a used Model S when Ford announced that I could start using Tesla Superchargers (with an adapter) after February, so I will hold off my decision to sell until I see how well that works.
By the way, I think a more apt comparison is between the Model Y and the Mach-E in Select trim rather than the Premium trim. The Select is a closer match to the Model Y with respect to interior materials and price.

I was cross shopping the MME and the MYLR.
The MME definitely drives great and feels very premium, especially on rougher roads, where the MY feels pretty unsettled at times.
That said, the combination of price, performance (the MYLR is way faster than the MME AWD extended range) and the charge network really sealed the deal for me. Especially because of what seems to be an extended rollout of the V4 chargers that will accept payment and allow other manufacturers EVs to change on the Tesla network.

Not correct. The issue has been that demand for GM and Ford model EVs has been weak. However, they both make millions on ICE automobiles. Bottom line is that Tesla (using GM’s discarded EV technology) was the “first mover” in capturing the mid-tier luxury vehicle market for EVs. GM miscalculated thinking that the market segment did not exist. Over time, the EV market will become crowed with other successful manufacturers besides Tesla - this is just the nature of business. However, ICE sales will remain strong for decades to come.

  • @Tonar18

Just sold my Mach e and bought a MYP. The Tesla is such a better EV experience. I agree the Mach e has better exterior and interior styling (and that's why I originally bought it over the MY), but that is where it's advantages end IMO. Tesla is less expensive (which it wasn't when I bought the MME), handles better, much more efficient, app is way better, and charging is a breeze. 150 KW seems like a decent charging speed for the Mach e until you charge at 253 kw and realize what an advantage that really is on a road trip. The Mach e is like dating a hot girl with a horrible personality, fun to show off but awful to live with. The MY is maybe a little bland, but is great with everything else. The MYP is a bit spiced up and the performance just blows the MME away. I took a bit of a bath on the MME, but I'm so glad I made the switch. I'd do it again in a second. There is a reason MME are piling up on dealers lots and Tesla sells every Y they build.

I'm torn, looks build quality materials it's ford. But as an electrical engineer, I love tesla's engineering of the car and their charging network is far too good and too advance compare to any competition. The battery degradation, pre heating when it's cold, like all that is seamless with Tesla which makes it hard. Also the range doesnt drop as much in cold weathers compare to any other electrical. for the mustang in Quebec, the mustang loses 100 miles of range in the winter... That's crazy and show you how far ahead Tesla is from an engineering stand point
But the one thing that would make me chose the mustang is that there are too many teslas out there and I hate driving a popular car lot more than i love engineering so that's why the mustang would win, also because you can now use tesla chargers too. If it wasn't for these 2 reasons I would go with the tesla

We’re considering the Mach E, we tried the Tesla and it seemed so cheaply built that it was a complete turn off. The Ford just feels so much better when you’re behind the wheel or as a passenger. Understand this, Ford has over 100 years of building vehicles. It should have a better interior sheerly because of the knowledge and experience in the luxury market with the Lincoln Brand. If the Tesla’s interior was on the same level as the Ford I would seriously not consider the Ford. Sorry, but the Tesla interior looks like something out of a kit car package and the exterior looks more like a pregnant Model 3.

Its always techy but doesn't feel "nice". Test driving the Mach-E this weekend tho so maybe i can cross it off the list then, but coming from a Q7 and really wanting an EV near 300mi range, i have a feeling i might have to compromise.

I couldn’t agree more with this review about the Mach E, I test drove the Mach E and my sisters Tesla model 3 & Y and compared the 3 and the Tesla is built cheap, ugly and boring. Although the charging infrastructure of Tesla is on top, I would still consider the Mach E. I’m just waiting closer towards the end of the year to see what other deals Ford can offer before I make the move.

The Mach-E also has normal car side mirror controls, on the driver's door handle. You have to use the screen on the Tesla. How that is legal, I do not know. The Tesla does not have Android Auto or Apple Car Play, which is common across the auto industry and a lot of people are used to. That might be livable, IF Tesla had our music app, RUclips Music, in their ecosystem. We didn't want the Bluetooth experience, we wanted the interactive experience. The Model Y we test drove also rode horribly on rough roads and there were rattles coming from the back, on a brand new demo car, which was a turnoff. The Mach-E didn't have any interior noise when we test drove it, save for wind noise coming from the A pillars when my wife got it up to 85.
Ford also has some crazy lease incentives on the remaining 2023s. We got a $10,500 lease bonus on top of a $3000 dealer discount on the car, which took the capitalized cost to $37K including sales tax and all fees on a car that stickered over $47K before tax. Our car is a Premium AWD standard battery with package 300A., which is to say more features than a plain Premium. So actually it was not cheaper in our case to get a Model Y, feature for feature. And there is no difference that I know of between a 2023 and 2024 Model Y. We were also able to drive ours off the lot the day we bought it, and the selling dealership went above Tesla's offer on our ICE midsize crossover trade-in.
The public DCFC experience has not been bad for us, we've taken it on a trip and we also used some DCFC around town before we got the L2 charger in our garage. We haven't had any issues with public charging and only had to wait once, and that time we had to wait, it was less than 5 minutes waiting.
What you give up in not getting a Tesla, besides the extra cabin room, in our case range since we have the standard battery with AWD. The highway efficiency is not the greatest on the Mach-E either since the coefficient of drag is .29 on the Mach-E vs .23 on the Model Y. I have gotten as low as 2.5 mi/kwh driving 75+ on the freeway. But that said, we usually fly and don't do a lot of road trips, so it's really somewhat irrelevant for our use case.
Tesla is also much better than Ford at doing software updates, some people have gotten stuck on their Mach-Es and have had to take it to the dealer to update. Ours has been working fine so far and we have gotten multiple updates.
Overall considering the ins and outs, we are very happy with our Mach-E. I wouldn't rule out buying a Tesla in the future, though.

I sold my $100k Tesla Model X for a Mustang Mach E and even with a $100k Tesla Model X the parts seem flimsy as well as thin paint and the car squeaked and rattled a lot compared to my almost 3 year old Mustang Mach E which still drives tight like brand new and higher quality materials.
Also, many Mach E owners started receiving their Tesla charging adapters and now use the Tesla Superchargers nationwide. Another thing you may not know is that the Ford Mach E phone app has a Frunk Button to remotely open the front frunk without pulling the interior handle to open.

Ford and Chevy have agreements with Tesla to use the Tesla Super charger system, starting in 2024 and will be giving owners adapters to allow it. My Mach-E premium with 4WD and Extended battery had a sticker reduction of $6000 and then I got a big markdown for a lease (or I could have chosen 0% financing ).
