When you refill/top the buckets, do you use water or premixed nutrients? Thanks for the tutorial! Could you do another video showing how to make the plant supports and all your buckets have foil for heat deflection?
Hi TTBT.
When i top the buckets up i use normal water (tap or rain water).
My water change goes as follow:
Once a month, empty the bucket with the old water, add the nutrients (Nutrifeed, 1g per 1lt water), fill the bucket with water and boom, that's your water change. Throughout the month i top the buckets up with normal water, no need to add any extra nutrients throughout the cycle.
Yes, most of my buckets does indeed have foil for heat deflection, but it is more of a "do it now for any possible problems in the future" roughly 80% of my buckets is covered with foil and the rest with nothing. For my past 2 seasons I've monitored them closely, with only a very small water temperature difference. Both methods provides the same results in my opinion. I grow in a polytunnel with max temperatures of 40-50°C and never lost a plant due to water temperature problems.
If you grow in direct sun, then yes, I'd advise you to cover them with foil. But on the other hand, chilli plants should not be grown in direct sun, best to keep them under 60% shade netting or U.V polytunnel plastic (the more expensive, but best results route).
A video will soon be available regarding the supports. If you'd like to know sooner, send me a dm on Instagram- Vaal Capsaicin, and I'll quickly help you in the meantime:)
@@vaalcapsaicin2278 One other question is that I've noticed you've kept the pots off the ground. Once again is that for heat deflection or just to make it easier for your back when servicing the pots? Thanks for answering my questions! Lastly I've noticed that basically this is wire fencing ziptied to the lid correct?
Last question I promise lol! Does the size of the netcup matters? 4" is half the price of your recommended 5" size.
@@gforcekaras yes, kept off the ground only to make life easier on my back🤣.
The supports is 100mm x 100mm fencing and attached to the lids. A little hard to explain on text how to attach it, thinking of doing a quick RUclips Short on it.
4" netcup will be perfect:)
@@vaalcapsaicin2278 Could you please elaborate on growing in a polytunnel? I'm currently using 40% shade cloth during the summer months and thinking that a PT would be too hot for the conditions - 30-45 days of 90+ degree weather.
So happy to see that someone else is also having sucess locally !! Please keep us updated.
Lettuce, tomato and basil also go wild using this system. Thank you for showing how simple it all is, I will try the potting soil method as I usually use expanded clay.
That's a nice system, you got going there! Thanks for sharing...
Thank you!🙂
rare of using soil for hydro thats neat as actually is doing it lovely i found that strictly pebbles and water alone was best results for me this is really neat combined efort there though neat probably helps im sure blessed wtg!
Thank for this video, you just gave me a solution to my problem. Please make more videos, I'm subscribing
Nice video!
Thank you:)
Amazing video! Thank you for sharing!
Do you top up every day? I wonder how much time it takes for the roots to become "air roots".
Love the video! Thank you!
Build a water reservoir and a float valve to auto refill the buckets.
Dankie video help baie waardeur
great vid thx!
Wish you continue doing this type of narrated videos. How often do you feed the plants in this system?
Only once a month when i do the water change. The 1g per 1lt ratio will be more than enough to keep the plant happy for 1 month, if using Starke Ayres Nutrifeed.
All my buckets hold +- 15lt water each, i will add 15g nutrients and that's it for 1 month.
I will do my best to provide more narrated videos and improve (i struggle on camera:)
Thank you for watching!

Hi Alex ,
Watse size hole saw gebruik jy ?
@@heisvisual 122mm hole saw, net pot fits perfectly then:)
@@vaalcapsaicin2278 sharp! Ek het een by my buurman geleen 😁
Thank you for the video. I do have a question, why did you drill that hole on the side of the bucket? I will give this a try.
Watch from 1:30 - 2:00 👍🏻. Overflow hole to prevent you for overfilling and to always keep an air gap between the water level and bottom of the net cup. The air gap supplies the oxygen to the plant and roots.
Hi Vaal: Do you PH your water? and also can the Wonder fertilizer work? Lush Greens for growth phase and Fruit and flower for fruit stage?
Awesome Video, thank you 🌿
Do you add any additional airflow via pump or air stone?
Thank you for watching!
I grow 60% of my plants in Kratky (without additional air) and the rest via Deep Water Culture.
Deep water Culture is basically the same as Kratky, but with additional airflow via an air pump pushing air into each bucket with an air hose and air stone.
I will upload a video soon showing my Deep Water Culture setup:)
@@vaalcapsaicin2278 awesome
Looking forward to see your method, and the difference in the two

Just normal potting soil:)
