Great video, amazing it's 3 years old, I have only just found this Kratky system, so I plan to combined it with horizontally stacked PVC or treated bamboo hydroponic gravity setup to grow all my vegies as garden grown ones just aren't coping with our intermitent SEQ weather, also the plants I've seen produced this way look awsome, cheers for your ideas.
Have you tried a pool noodle, sliced to size? Noodles are made from the same material as the clips you were using in the video Sliced like snake steaks , it makes a disk that fills the entire hole and gently holds the plant and expands as the plant grows. Here in the USA , you can easily find pool noodles in any discount store or toy dept at Walmart/ Kmart type store. Hardware/ Farm supply may have a very similar product for pipe insulation. Hope this helps save a few quid.
Hi Rob. Hello from TX, USA. So glad to see you gardening again. Yes please make more videos of this method of gardening. I learn a lot from you. You have a gift of teaching that is invaluable. Follow up videos will be awesome. Keep up the good work 👍 God bless you 🤗
Rob, as the nutrient level falls, the roots that are exposed move over from being suppliers of liquid & nutrient to the plant to suppliers of oxygen to the plant. The best method to keep all the "oxygen roots" alive is to only top up with very small amounts of nutrient regularly. The best method (ie as in the least work) is to add a float valve 25% up from the bottom of your containers & feed your nutrient through that valve. This will ensure the "air roots" will not die due to a "flood". Also consider raising your pH with liquid silicon. Plants normally add silicon to the cell walls which makes them more resistant to pests & diseases & to stresses brought on by temperature extremes. Normally there is no silicon in pre-mixed hydroponics nutrients as it is very alkaline (pH 10 to 10.5). Add the liquid silicon to your water stock before adding your hydroponics nutrients. Liquid silicon is regularly used by commercial growers as it also extends the shelf life of their product. It helps to prevent tomatoes (for instance) from going mouldy from the inside to the outside. Commercial growers rarely talk about their trade secrets which is why you never/rarely hear about liquid silicon. Keep up your excellent videos.
Cheers for that Derek. Have seen a number of different float top ups on RUclips. Dr Kratky has one on his channel that looks very easy to set up. 👍 I knew silicone is important for plant development but didn't recall seeing any additives at the store. Will have a better look next time. Cheers mate & happy growing.
@@RobsAquaponics Thanks Rob. Liquid silicon is not super cheap but a small amount goes a very long way. If you try the float idea, please give us an update. Of course you could organise for a single float to feed many of your containers all at once :) Keep up the great videos!
Thank you for sharing this, I now know why my first season did not do well as I had used full strength solution which I bought from a hydroponic store. I did have trouble with the chilli plants as they grew bigger as they needed to be stalked. I am going to try again.
I have a 20 litre pot and put green onions in, 12 in total ,and leave them to grow. I keep them in soil for a year and cut the tops off as needed for onion instead of bulbs. If and when I get seed spikes I cut them off and just add to the pot. It is the best cut and come again I know.
Nice one Glyn. We have some red onions flowering at the moment in a wicking barrels. They're around 2 years old now and we treat them as a cut and come again crop too. Happy Growing mate.
Hi Rob, I've watched the video a couple of times now, the wife and I have decided that we are going to try this this winter along with our vegepod experiment. I've already bought some more led lights to grow with. Best regards, Jarrod
i use a pool noodle to put the plants in. cut 1" thick and then cut another one to quarter it for a wedge to hold plant in the center of 1st foam plant holder...
I planted green onions in a continuous-flow hydroponic system on my balcony (1 per 4" (10 cm) cup) and one of them became a monster. It filled the whole cup in diameter and grew over the side, hanging down a few feet. It was still going strong and I had to kill it off when I moved.
Nice one TOG. I grew them in the old recirculating hydro system years ago & always had top results with them. 👍 Do you have a system on the grow at the moment? Cheers.
@@RobsAquaponics No but I am getting ready to set up a garden out here in the desert. I had to put the aquaponics on hold because of the job situation. The major problems out here are heat and pests. If you just grow a garden it will be completely consumed by pests. I'm planning to put in a 24' x 24' (7.3 m x 7.3 m) building frame with hardware cloth and screening and start with some raised beds. From there I will look into putting in place some aquaponics once I solve the problem of getting the water down to a temperature suitable for Tilapia. Summer temperatures average about 5F too high for Tilapia. You mentioned chillers last time but it seems expensive and complicated. Was talking to my uncle and he recommended burying circulating water pipes about 6' (2m) down. This might work and would only require a simple pump to operate. A _lot_ of digging though. :D
I had a play with Kratky a few years ago. Worked pretty well. Great idea for patio vege growing mate. Actually, I'll link the video to the Brisbane Local Food facebook page to give you a bit of a plug for it.
Thanks Mr Andy. 👍 Am thinking I might keep a few cut & come again herbs and greens growing this way even after the aquaponics is running again. Cheers mate
Great video mate. I love the kratky method.... I use it alot. ! With, alot of success.👍🙏💚 I have a 6 ft tall sweet potato in a 500ml yoghurt container.!! I just use some good quality liquid hydro nutrients. A&b. Also do alot of green salad veg.. love it. Thanks for sharing your information and advice. Can't wait for the next few weeks to warm up!! Get the outdoor vege patch growing.
Great clip, it seems like you've tried just about everything over the years. Would it be possible to do a "lessons learned" or similar clip on all of the trade-offs and recommendations for different growing systems you've built? For example, what plants might do better in a root pouch vs aquaponics, or how do you decide what to put in a wicking bed? Also, I remember the straw bale gardening, what was the end result of that? Overall great job, thanks again for all your tutorials.
New subscriber, I have been growing cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and lettuce indoors using the kratky method. I will be trying broccoli and Celery soon seeds are on the way. Always looking for more things that will grow in the Kratky method. Those grow grips look very convenient for when you are using cuttings. Very nice. Thanks for sharing!!
Ours comes out at a flat 6 so needs to be buffered some. I found 1 part straight tap water (pH 8ish) to 2 parts RO balances it out nicely. Cheers Jonathan.
Rob, thanks for the video. I don't have a aquaponics system yet but have been looking at Kratky as a gateway into aquaponics. My fear is loosing the plants and the fish shortly after. I realize there is a learning curve with all this. Just trying to keep the cost down while in the learning phase. Thanks and love any tips you can pass along on this.
Getting some experience with plants first will help Troy so a small hydro system would be a great place to start. Cost can be a big issue with aquaponics so start small with a design you can add onto. 👍 Cheers mate.
First class Kratky operation going on Rob, with a fantastic place to sit and observe the plants growing. If you would like to try Kratky micro greens, check out Mike VanDuzee. Take care.
It would be interesting to see if kratky would work just on the filter runoff from the aquaponics system or if the concentration levels aren't right or perhaps the solids would cause problems
I think there may be a few issues with the bacteria & organics in the water so would turn putrid fast. I can see no issues with running it through a mineralisation process first then running it through an aerated hydro system though as in a decoupled aquaponic system. 👍
@@RobsAquaponics i would wonder then if there is any value in overcomplicating things in that way, or if all the experimentation is just converging to a fish farm as the water source for a garden. Or maybe something like what the autopot folks did.
just starting out on this adventure. Can this method be done indoors with lights? I heard him talk about "growing season" but if I am growing indoor there is no end to the growing season. So do I ditch the plant when it goes dry and start over or just add more water and nutrients? If so, how high should I fill the reservior?
Many folks grow indoors using this method Patricia. 👍 I find that the tubs with the greens don't need to be topped up as there's just enough to get the plants through to be harvested. With my tomatoes & others in the buckets I top the buckets up to ½ full whenever it gets close to being empty. Hope that helps & sorry for taking so long to reply.
These plants sit at the edge of the deck so get sun almost all day long through winter. 👍 They will also grow in reduced light levels but you may find they grow a bit "leggy". Cheers.
I wonder if using Weed Block cloth or even Burlap/Hessian fabric on top of the bin might keep the UV rays out of the light-colored bins and prevent heat reflection
I was thinking about using some of the saved weed cloth I have but I think the black would be just as bad as it absorbs heat. Hessian would be a better choice I think. Cheers Timothy.
You must of heard me mumbling around my morning coffee the other day. I’ve got a few containers for this and one I’m going to play with aeroponics. I’ve got almost everything set out just waiting on little pots from eBay (no close hyd shops in the bush)
Hi Rob, thanks for the introduction and education about the Kratky system. Here's a question for you... Novelty and interest aside, if you had to depend on a method or 2 of production (because that was the only way you could eat) what would you pour all of your effort into? I guess I'm putting you on the spot to say which is the most effective method/s? Cheers......Dave
Hi Dave. I think I'd stick with wicking beds & aquaponics 👍 Aquaponics mainly for the fish & also the fast turn around of greens crops. Wicking beds as they conserve water, can grow a number of different crops & are don't rely on any power inputs like a proper circulating hydro or aquaponics systems do. Cheers mate.
Please with the kratky method do you leave the set up in direct sunlight or under a canopy or a net? If in the open, how do you deal with rain water going into the set up?
Thank you for posting about the Kratky system! I have been out to buy just about everything I need to get going. Trying to figure out what area in my house will stay warm enough to grow since we are headed into winter. Thank you so much again Rob!
This company state that they use plant & fungus derived nutrients where they can so that's why I chose to use them. Fish feed is sometimes made with fish caught specifically to be turned into fish feed so it's not that sustainable either in that respect. That doesn't happen here from what I've been told by my supplier but I think it is a bit of a concern for those that are calling aquaponics the "sustainable answer" just to sell a course or product. Cheers MCMLH 👍😊
Hi, thanks for sharing your experience. Please let me know the name of the beats that you placed in the net cup at the end ( after 10 minutes ) , to keep the plant straight up. Thanks again. 🤔🤔
I used a hole saw for some & the others I used a sharp utility knife. Need to go slow with both as the plastic (& fingers) cut be cut too far very easily.
Do you worry about the uv Ray's degrading plastic and introducing it into your water? That's a big concern j have before I start. O noticed not all your bins are lined.
I was with the buckets Eric so that's why I covered them. Not so much with the other totes as they get shaded by the railing. I will look at covering them in the future when they get moved into a sunnier spot. Cheers.
in what media you have grown the capsicum? do we wash it off before transferring? I am using cocopeat, is it safe to wash it off and then transfer? as the roots hold the cocopeat well, that's the reason I didn't bother washing them off
The capsicum was in potting soil to begin with before going into the bucket. 👍 I like to wash off as much of the original medium as I can before transplanting.
I thought about doing some celery in a bucket for the same reason Jody. I need to grab some new seeds first though so need to hit the online seed shops. Have a top one.
Hi Jules. Most Hydro shops should stock it as its a fairly popular brand. 👍 If you can't find some locally you should be able to buy it online easy enough. Hope you can track some down & happy growing.
Thanks Rob, Do your plants get much direct sun on your deck,? and can I grow some leafy lettuces in front of a good size bright window or do they need direct sunlight.. thanks, Jules🌻
They were getting about 5/6 hours at the moment Julie. Through winter they should be getting from almost sunrise to sunset out there. 👍 You might get away with growing on the window ledge but they may not grow to full size. Maybe just use them as a continuous pick crop.
have just started the Kratky method, trying to get my solutions correct. have 32 litre containers how much of part a and b sholud i use? nutrient is Bloom same as your video. P.S love your content keep on
Hi Trevor. There will be a new clip looking at how these went posted around 6pm Brisbane time if you're interested. 😉 I found the ½ dose of 1ml per L to do better. The next batch will have a ½ dose & full dose so I can see which works best. Cheers.
I used a flooring underlay that really isn't that sturdy. You'd be better off looking for a silver building insulation wrap as it is made a lot stronger. Cheers
With the Kratky, I'd suggest you check out the links I popped in the description & go from there. 👍 I might post a "How To" once I sort out how it works best for us. Cheers Eric & happy growing mate.
haha 20 year old netcups... man ok hoarding not good in general, I do it all the time though. Half a year ago I threw away some plastic bucket lids and now that I'm into hydroponics I cry. :D haha
Please forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question. But do you have to worry about bad bacteria when doing something like this? Like in lettuce commercial hydroponic beds you sometimes hear of lysteria or ecoli or something else that causes a recall, is that something that can happen?
I don't really worry. I've used manures of many different animals & urine in different growing situations with no concerns. I think the infections from hydro come more from processing the harvest but may be wrong.
@@RobsAquaponics thank you, I'm new to the whole hydro/aquaponics world and I'm just trying to learn as much as I can, be educated on it before jumping in.
Not an ignorant question at all & a legitimate concern (if you don't know) if you ask me. Those bacterial contaminants don't come from the water source. Which is not to say that it can't; but those recalls are usually the result of an individual with poor personal hygiene or resent exposure to these bacteria (in some rare cases, both).
I haven't as of yet but will need to pop some sort of screen under the lid of the container with the grow grips, thanks for mentioning that. I don't think there should be any issues with the others as the mozzies can't get into the water. Thanks again.
I used the perlite in the smaller pots as it fits better than the larger clay balls. Clay would be Over time as it doesn't break up like perlite does. 👍
Hi, thanks for the video. I have tried a number of plants in buckets with water . They started okay but after a time began to develop yellow leaves. the roots on some plants also began to look pretty unhealthy and, in some cases, the water began to look a bit unpleasant with an almost oily surface appearance. I was carefully watching nutrient level and also pH. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Did you say that you put in just half strength nutrients when growing in a bucket? Thanks
I'm not 100% sure what's happening there sorry Paul. Did you keep topping the level up or let it fall naturally? If you are topping it up it may be that the roots at the top aren't enough to take up O2 & that may cause a few issues. Any organic matter left to rot in the nutrient mix may be an issue as well. With ours I was using ½ strength nutrients & found that was enough for basic greens. 👍 I'm sorry I'm not much help mate & also that it took so long to get to your comment.
I have seen folks grow fruit trees in hydroponic systems but not using the Kratky method. Check out the Hooch hydroponics channel as he is growing citrus and a few other fruit trees using hydroponics.
Quick question for you rob bob, I have some bananas in root pouch's (30 gallon) and they started growing suckers. Would you leave them or uproot the suckers?
Hi there. I'd take the suckers out & start them up in now containers or the ground if you can. Found out the hard way that the pouches will split if you leave too many in there. 😕 The only time id say leave it be is if the the mother stem starts to set fruit then the next sucker can take over. Hope that helps some.
I've picked them up from a few different places over the years Sean. Hydro stores mainly but you can find cheaper deals on line if you're chasing bulk buys.
😅😂 Only for a little while Ram. Just need to sort some things out before we know how much coin we have to play with for the aquaponics and garden makeover. Cheers mate
I'm not organically certified so don't like to use that term. 😉 These were sold for food storage bins so would be food grade HDPE I would think. I would use stainless steel but my pockets are only so deep.
I wouldn't use the water from aquaponics in an un aerated hydro growing system. Too many organics & would turn anaerobic very fast I think. All the organic hydro/bioponic systems I've seen are fairly heavily aerated through water movement or air lines. Cheers mate.
Not a lot of that going on at the moment. Need to get some other stuff done before I can hook into it again. If you feel like dropping by to give me a hand, I can get to sorting it out sooner. 😉 Cheers.
I'll happily take your word for it. 👍 I looked up the pak choi and it was suggested they like it higher. In all honesty, I just clear forgot to suss out what the capsicum & cuc needed. They should be fine from what I've now read & I can always adjust the top up to help lower the pH in the container. Thanks & have a top one.
Do you realise that most of the folks that comment are from the States so I'd be shooting myself in the foot if I disrespected them. I also have to show folks here in Australia what I use otherwise they'd call me a sell out chasing views & pandering only to folks in the States. I suppose I can't please you all. Cheers
I think it’s a testament to his non- bias that he makes an effort to always give the measurements of pipe sizes in both metric and imperial (what we use in the states).

just starting out on this adventure.
I find that the tubs with the greens don't need to be topped up as there's just enough to get the plants through to be harvested. With my tomatoes & others in the buckets I top the buckets up to ½ full whenever it gets close to being empty.
Hope that helps & sorry for taking so long to reply.
My bare root strawberries transplanted satisfactory under kratky.
Hope they grow well for you Valerie. 👍
Please show how your getting the lighting as cucumber and tomatoes like 6-8 hours sunlight.
These plants sit at the edge of the deck so get sun almost all day long through winter. 👍
They will also grow in reduced light levels but you may find they grow a bit "leggy".
Have seen a few folks play around with aeroponics but never had a crack at it myself.
Are you making your own system from scratch?
Rob Bob Yeah cobber I’m just going to play with similar size(black tub yellow lid)
@@downunderfulla6001 I saw a guy in the states make up one in a 55gal drum. Looked very impressive.
Rob I just seen foam inserts made from pool noodles. Maybe an interesting watch

@@RobsAquaponics good answer! You nailed it, I think. Love your videos!
Cheers @@montecraig1149 👍👍
Please with the kratky method do you leave the set up in direct sunlight or under a canopy or a net? If in the open, how do you deal with rain water going into the set up?
Good video thank you ! you don't use a air pump ? no problem ?
Haven't had issues as of yet. Might be a bit different with the larger plants come summer though. 👍
Thank you for posting about the Kratky system! I have been out to buy just about everything I need to get going. Trying to figure out what area in my house will stay warm enough to grow since we are headed into winter. Thank you so much again Rob!
No problem at all DM. 👍
QUESTION:
Also, how close do the grow lights need to be to the seeds? Trying to grow in my basement.
It would be interesting to compare Kratky vs Vegepod with growing the same plant - which grows fastest, best flavour, nutrition etc
I'd say the hydro would grow the fastest but nutrition wise, they would be almost the same in the soil I'm using.
Cheers
What are the nutrients made out of? It's why I find aquaponics so appealing because I know where the ferts come from
This company state that they use plant & fungus derived nutrients where they can so that's why I chose to use them.
Cheers MCMLH 👍😊
what size bin did you use? How many plants per container (with dimension size)?
I think they're about 15L.
Hi, thanks for sharing your experience. Please let me know the name of the beats that you placed in the net cup at the end ( after 10 minutes ) , to keep the plant straight up. Thanks again. 🤔🤔
Hi there. The last plant I popped into the bucket was a cucumber. 👍
What made you go to hydro Pontiac rob?
Keep up the good work loving it
It will be a while before I will have the aquaponics & large soil beds ready to grow. Thought these would be a good stop gap measure.
Cheers Wes.
how do you make the holes on the lid
@@RobsAquaponics ok yes. Thank you 😎
I’m doing some Kraty bins this year, doing celery in one cause I cannot keep enough water up to it
I thought about doing some celery in a bucket for the same reason Jody. I need to grab some new seeds first though so need to hit the online seed shops.
Have a top one.
Another great video Rob
Well done
How are your aquaponics going
They're not at the moment. Still waiting for the loan for the renovations to settle before we can plan out the yard renovations. 👍
Love your videos Rob,
Is there any stockists in Victoria for the Bloom A that you use please ..
Cheers
Jules 🌻
Hi Jules. Most Hydro shops should stock it as its a fairly popular brand. 👍 If you can't find some locally you should be able to buy it online easy enough.
Hope you can track some down & happy growing.
Thanks Rob,
Do your plants get much direct sun on your deck,? and can I grow some leafy lettuces in front of a good size bright window or do they need direct sunlight.. thanks, Jules🌻
I found the ½ dose of 1ml per L to do better.
The next batch will have a ½ dose & full dose so I can see which works best.
Cheers.
@@RobsAquaponics cheers mate, just watched your newest clip, very good and love the information
what do you use to isolate from the sun (the reflectiv layer) ? can i buy this online ? thank you
I used a flooring underlay that really isn't that sturdy. You'd be better off looking for a silver building insulation wrap as it is made a lot stronger.
Cheers
How would you recommend some one with no experience start?
With the Kratky, I'd suggest you check out the links I popped in the description & go from there. 👍
I might post a "How To" once I sort out how it works best for us.
Cheers Eric & happy growing mate.
Pls show more kratky...😊
I'll be doing a bit more once we have the garden are set up on our new farm.

Liam Neeson of hydroponics... :D
🤣🤣
haha 20 year old netcups... man ok hoarding not good in general, I do it all the time though. Half a year ago I threw away some plastic bucket lids and now that I'm into hydroponics I cry. :D haha
I've donated & trashed LOADS of gear that would be great for some new systems I want to now build mate. 🤣😓 Such is.
👍
Thats deadly Rob, love it
Thanks Matt. I miss BBQed Jades and salads so the aquaponics folks don't need to worry. 😂😉
Lol yeah mate can only go so long without fish. How well would aquaponics water go as the nutrients in a krakty ?
I think they'd go a bit manky due to the bacteria. You could add air but then you'd be basically running a decoupled system. 👍
Did you encountered any mosquito problem and what is your solution.
I haven't as of yet but will need to pop some sort of screen under the lid of the container with the grow grips, thanks for mentioning that.
I don't think there should be any issues with the others as the mozzies can't get into the water.
Thanks again.
Hi, may I ask why you use perlite, and not clay pebbles? Which of the two would be more cost-effective?
I used the perlite in the smaller pots as it fits better than the larger clay balls.
Clay would be Over time as it doesn't break up like perlite does. 👍
for the hole with sponge, will u get algae on nutrient liquid after some time?
It is possible if the plant doesn't cover the gaps fast enough. 👍
Cheers & have a top one.
hey uncle robby its me angus. im wondering can you do a how to start a garden video at my house
How about you give me a hand with Nana's aquaponics over the school holidays and we'll chat then. 👍😁 Only one week to go.
Rob, what did you say you are washing out those roots with? Thanks!
Hey Green Gregs. I just used a bucket of water to clean the soil off.
Cheers mate.
I'm sorry I'm not much help mate & also that it took so long to get to your comment.
Can you use this method for a lemon tree , size foot and a half
I have seen folks grow fruit trees in hydroponic systems but not using the Kratky method. Check out the Hooch hydroponics channel as he is growing citrus and a few other fruit trees using hydroponics.
Try playing this @ 1.5x speed :)
😅 & some of complain that I talk too fast.
Cheers
@@RobsAquaponics You are a legend Rob. Keep up the great work, I wish you every success.
The only time id say leave it be is if the the mother stem starts to set fruit then the next sucker can take over.
Hope that helps some.
Just wondering do you need to have a bucket that big?
No you don't I've seen folks grow single plants in large jars with holes in the lids.
Hey rob. Who do you get your baskets from. Cheers mate
I've picked them up from a few different places over the years Sean. Hydro stores mainly but you can find cheaper deals on line if you're chasing bulk buys.

The pool noodles will degrade in the sun and aren't made with food-grade plastic.

The ph was perfect for hydro 5.5 to 5.9 but you brought it up to a soil ph of 6.2 to 6.8 the water dont have the same buffering capability
Have since sorted that out. Cheers 👍

Always surprised by organic gardeners growing in non food grade plastic.
I'm not organically certified so don't like to use that term. 😉
These were sold for food storage bins so would be food grade HDPE I would think.
I would use stainless steel but my pockets are only so deep.
But why dont you use you own nutrient solution. That's the hard part
I wouldn't use the water from aquaponics in an un aerated hydro growing system. Too many organics & would turn anaerobic very fast I think. All the organic hydro/bioponic systems I've seen are fairly heavily aerated through water movement or air lines.
Cheers mate.
I mean we watch for the aquaponics
Not a lot of that going on at the moment. Need to get some other stuff done before I can hook into it again.
If you feel like dropping by to give me a hand, I can get to sorting it out sooner. 😉
Cheers.
I would come help you but one problem I live in Michigan it would of been nice to

But dont take my word for it call the nutrients company again and ask the the preferred ph. For hydroponics.
I'll happily take your word for it. 👍
I looked up the pak choi and it was suggested they like it higher. In all honesty, I just clear forgot to suss out what the capsicum & cuc needed. They should be fine from what I've now read & I can always adjust the top up to help lower the pH in the container.

Not sure what you mean Ricky. What makes you think that?
Do you realise that most of the folks that comment are from the States so I'd be shooting myself in the foot if I disrespected them.
I also have to show folks here in Australia what I use otherwise they'd call me a sell out chasing views & pandering only to folks in the States.
I suppose I can't please you all.

I think it’s a testament to his non- bias that he makes an effort to always give the measurements of pipe sizes in both metric and imperial (what we use in the states).
