In the works of writing ‪@AshaPhaedra‬ 's LAB episode 1 Aimed and Burnt here - the draft isn't much different from the final soundtrack, just layered some stuff on top of it. Sometimes simplicity is key, as you ask any film/tv/animation scoring composer they'll tell you that.
Testing a synth can go from seeing if it fits the vibe, to improvising on it and see what one can get out of it, as well as contributing additionally onto what was already written.
