  • Despite the recent industry-wide layoffs, there is nothing to actually be concerned about.

I’ve been playing 99% indie for about 2 years now.

Even if the AAA market ends up at it's worst, indie games will always be there.

The worst time for AAA and the best time for real gamers because of a massive indie market and cheap older games.

I don't think it's possible for the industry to have a severe crash like before. It generates too much revenue and overall engagement. More gamers than we've ever had. More games being created. I mean GTA 6 on it's own could recover the entire industry. Just 1 game has that insane amount of power.

People asking for a crash don't consider the hundreds of millions of people that would have to drop gaming 100% and also the thousands of companies that would have to go under first before a crash even starts to happen.

Most of the gamers that make these videos are pretty clueless. They all thoughtlessly repeat the same opinions about layoffs, "crunch", monetization etc.

Agreed, even if the AAA recesses, as long as the economy doesn't totally crash. The demand for games will be there, there will be a market for it and the market is insane, cut it into a quarter and it's still plenty large.
Something funny is also that I'd say I'm fairly pro-capitalism (read Road to Serfdom from Hayek recently and loved it) and play mostly cheap 2-man indies and mods, 70$ garbage doesn't fulfill my marginal utility.

Yeah I agree, as much as I feel a crash in some ways could possibly benefit the industry and bring needed change, it's not going to happen. The industry is just too big to really ever fail like that again, I mean the way it was being run back in 1983, it was just bound to crash eventually. Though I do feel a crash would have much more negative effects on consumers this go around, like if the industry crashes it likely would be caused by big companies going bankrupt. No doubt in my mind that if this occurred, pretty much any and all online services would likely go down and people would look access to a lot of their games and or online services. While we do know that Valve has said that they have a "plan" in case Steam goes down, we don't know how thorough their fallback plan really is, so it's possible you could lose all of your games, or at least the ability to download them. Obviously with No Steam patches abound you could play most games still if they're Single-Player, but pretty much any Multi-Player game would be gone outside of those that support player custom servers. Really honestly a crash is unlikely and I feel it would have far too many negative consequences this time around, although the industry at large certainly does need some radical changes as it's still imo at a mostly all time low in various ways.

Making profit is good, the problem comes when big corporations swoop up pre-existing IP they don't want to put any effort into maintaining,.and shutter it the moment it has problems (Often after a halfassed promotion with a lot of pandering)
It's the same way big business assumes mid sized and small businesses will train everyone for them to poach, if they keep that "We exist to aquire what you built" mentality after they become de-facto monopolies, that logically means nobody is building anything for them to poach anymore because they all went under or are under their tightwad umbrella, time to move on from video games to pachinko machines or something.

    VR isn't failing. It's a niche.
It's an important difference to make.
The reason Sony's VR is failing is that all the relevant VR is on PC. VR is a very hardcore thing and the casual group that the console-only audience is is not the demographic that VR actually appeals to. By not having PC support their VR was dead on arrival.
It is also important not to overbudget VR stuff because such a niche product has more limited profit potential.

That narrative collapses when you realize that the PSVR is one of the best selling headsets of all time

@@RealCynicalGamer Isn't that purely because more people play on consoles than PC though? / VR hardware requirements are much higher for PC

@@RealCynicalGamer Personally I think you should've worded it differently. Maybe "Sony's VR is failing"? VR outside of PSVR is doing pretty good with the sales of the Quest 2 and 3. And funnily enough, PSVR isn't even one of the best selling headsets of all times. You know what beat PSVR? The Google cardboard lol

I would love to do VR but the thing keeping me from VR is that I don't want to buy anything from FB/Meta and too many VR things are exclusive to Quest devices
