Such great songwriting by Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong, musicianship by The Funk Brothers, and vocal performance by The Temptations, so as much as I love the Daniel Ash bands (Love & Rockets, Bauhaus, Tones on Tail) for their hundreds of original songs, I'm with The Temptations on this battle! Motown and the Rat Pack are perhaps the only performers I can appreciate despite not writing their own music.

I like Love and Rockets' cover. It's grittier, more manic, with dissonant curtains of distortion. Listening to it is to get the sense that the world is on a collision course with its shadow.

Great song, two brilliant versions. The original is better for me, but the L&R is also very interesting. Maybe a bit dated, but a clever and energetic cover. Great reaction, guys, as usual. Thanks for bringing this excelent battle.

Love And Rockets lost the momentum, for me, and it became more about the synthetic 80s production sound than the actual message. True, the song was rearranged a bit, but possibly more to the detriment of its message, unfortunately. The Temptations original packs much more of a punch, and to my ears there is really no comparison. The Motown sound just could not be beaten, and certainly not by a typical tinny 80s production.

got to go to temptations here no doubt.
    legendary track
unfortunately L&,R version just sounds like typical synth rock on this one doesn't do much at all.
they're pretty much a one hit wonder band with their classic I'm alive in my opinion only

I have a soft spot for The Temptations but I liked the cover as well so I'm going to wimp out and call it a tie. Lol. I was reminded of a fond memory when you mentioned "Battle of the Bands" Shawn. In my high school and early college years my hometown had a battle of the bands a couple of times a year held in our local college Hockey Arena. It included some of our local bands as well as some from nearby cities and towns. It was a lot of fun, loud and almost too much to take in. Lol.

Those were the days Melissa! We are too young to understand how great they were at the time, carefree, at least compared to later in life!

For me this was a no contest given that the Temptations were singing of their time and give the song Soul in every sense of the word whilst the Love and Rockets version is out of time and souless.

For lasting consideration, the Temps but the L & R cover has a great vibe, too. I first heard the L & R version on a great compilation titled Why 2K? which was aimed at the nihilism of the ending millennium. REM, Oingo Boingo among others. Of interest re Motown's Funk Brothers house band, the bass was handled by Bob Babbitt rather than the amazing James Jamerson as Whitfield thought JJ wouldn't follow the songwriters bass instructions. Tina Turner also covered.

The Temptations original is far superior to the L & R version, which I did not like. The Temptations hace soul, L& R has no soil, very cold & mexhanical
