Now you're talking! I was a huge Al Green fan back in the day and still listen to this same album regularly. There is not a bad song on this album. The music on this album just makes you feel good and mellow. This is his prime. Horns are smooth and subtle. His voice oozes soul. This is REAL music. Do "Let's Get Married" "Tired of Being Alone" and "Let's Stay Together" from this album. PLEASE!

OMG yes! A 70s childhood..great memories! I remember the grown folks would be in the front room playing records on the record player, drinking cocktails and smoking cigarettes(I mean, it was the 70s). And the kids would be in a back room watching tv and playing games, and sometimes we’d sneak out into the hallway to listen to the music and laughter. Good times!🥰

@Bronwyn-cf3um Wow, did we all have identical childhoods? You painted the picture exactly. For me, it would be aunts, uncles, and my cousins. We would be watching TV or listening to our own music while playing boardgames. I had a collection of other stuff from prior Christmases like a pinball machine, a 3 in 1 pool table, air hockey, and ping-pong table. I look back at those times with great joy and a bit of melancholy because the adults are all gone even many of my cousins. I, myself, had come close calls due to epilepsy and kidney failure. I thank my parents, aunts, and uncles, for the wisdom they gave me. The music and Good Times* then were truly fun, and the best!

I remember watching my parents and other relatives tear up the floor on this one, and when I was older and understood the lyrics, I felt the song even more and tore up the floor, too. 😊
One night, I was at the club with friends and a man in his early 70s asked me to dance to this song. He was a little more than forty years older than me, but he showed out. I danced with him a lot that night as he put the guys in their 30s to shame. 😄
Next by Al... "For the Good Times".
My boyfriend used to play that one a lot. Slow dancing to it on repeat made for many romantic evenings.😊

That hard driving rhythm is courtesy of the Hi Rhythm section (as in Hi Records, the label for which it was recorded) - Mabon “Teenie” Hodges on guitar, his brothers Charles on organ and Leroy on bass, and Howard Grimes and Al Jackson, Jr. on drums. Horns by Wayne Jackson, of the Memphis Horns, on trumpet and Jack Hale on trombone. The song was written by Al Green and Teenie Hodges. Who co-wrote several of Al’s hits, including Take Me to the River. Another great Hi Records song featuring the Hi Rhythm section you don’t want to miss is Ann Peebles “I Can’t Stand the Rain” - a great Friday choice!

A wonderful singer who is seldom mentioned that I think you guys would really like is Jerry Butler. He was one of my parents' favorite old-school singers. They started me listening to him around 4 years old. That was the same time I began listening to Al Green, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson....all the greats of the 50's and 60's.
He has such a smooth, soulful voice, very easy to listen to and enjoy. His voice was so smooth, his nickname was the "Iceman" .
    Please first listen to:
    1. "For Your Precious Love" by Jerry Butler and The Impressions/1958
    2. "Hey, Western Union Man" by Jerry Butler/1968

Al Green came from the church. He started singing in this era and the career blew up. He lives out this song and slipped up and got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. One chest full of hot grits and he became the Rev. Al Green but he still sings these songs because they are about love. My favorite is "Let's Get Married Today"

So thankful, as a Memphian, that you are listening to the great Reverend Green once again! He has quite the catalogue. At a minimum, get his greatest hits album for your backyard sittin' around enjoyment! : - )

So glad ya'll got back to some Al Green! This is what's called grown folks music.😀 My wife and I love his music. We have several of his albums. And ya'll haven't even scratched the surface of Al's catalog of songs. I knew ya'll was in for a treat. And when that base dropped it was all over.😂 Amber, your face said it all! And Jay, there's plenty more of his songs you'll be adding to your backyard playlist. Songs like Let's Stay Together, For the Good Times, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Tired of Being Alone, Simply Beautiful, I'm Still in Love With You, Belle, and many more. Really loved the reaction guys!

Amber is such a huge fan of BRASS. Some how we got to get her to listen to what most people say was the greatest SAX solo ever recorded. Title song of the 1973 Billboards Album of the Year "THE WORLD IS A GHETTO" by War.

The man is an absolute treasure!!

This is real R&B and it’s 1,000,000 miles away from where R&B is today. Which is crappy pop. You see you don’t need a video. This is what the artist intended. I remember being up in Harlem in smoky, sweaty clubs dancing the night away to this beautiful music in the middle of the black counterculture. 🕊❤️🎼

There are three singers that if I had only one more chance to hear music. I would want to hear. Al Green , Sam Cooke and Soul Stirrers, and Aretha Franklin, would probably be the three.

My cousin loved Al Green. She is literally the reason why I listened to him. I was only seven when his music came out but I remember her just going gaga over him. She’s in her 70s now and I told her last year how much I love Al Green because of her.
I think of her almost every time I hear him.

I had an Al Green LP when I was growing up. Let's get together is one of the best songs ever. But I was thinking, Amber, you like horns so much, I recommend Stan Getz, one of the best saxofonists ever. He was the best pairing for samba and samba jazz, and his pairing with Chet Barker is gold.

I first fell in love with this song when I seen him perform it on the Letterman Show. Dave was a huge Al Green fan and after hearing this song, I became one too. This and “Let’s Stay Together” are my favorites. I just love sitting in a mellow bar listening to his music. It get’s me so relaxed and in a zone. What an amazing voice and some smooth ass music.
