This song sounds pretty "The Else"-like to me, in a really good way. It reminds me of songs like the Mesopotamians, Contrecoup, and feign amnesia. The harmonies are really pleasant, and Linnel's voice really fits songs like these that have very melodic phrasings.
I always though this song had great imagery. But that part with the family dinner at 1:52 with the line delivery, the detailed description, the alliteration, and the increasing intensity to explode at 2:11 just made me picture a whole movie or comic book scene out of that. They're so great at creating moods
For some reason it makes me think of the scene in the first Incredibles movie where Helen is trying to get the kids to stop fighting while Bob is uninterested.
Lyrics for my own reference, from genius [Verse 1] The stars got together and extinguished the moon and sun And they reigned forever in the night sky they had won The words assassinated the book The kitchen cooked and ate the cook [Chorus] Aw yeah, what is that certain je ne sais quoi? Aw yeah, it's a stone cold coup d'état Stone cold coup d'état Stone cold coup d'état [Verse 2] The orchestra conductor has been captured and tried and killed And the viola now occupies the throne that he formerly filled The bark now commands the trees The queen is overruled by the bees [Chorus] Aw yeah, it has a certain je ne sais quoi Aw yeah, it's a stone cold coup d'état Stone cold coup d'état Stone cold coup d'état [Bridge] But if history is any guide It cannot be understood When you're not on the winning side Around the dinner table, a family says grace And the son sees the secret signal on his sister's face Dad smiles at his wife Daughter reaches for the knife [Pre-Chorus] Aw yeah, it has that certain je ne sais quoi Autumn leaves will burn (Yeah yeah) As the seasons turn (Yeah yeah) Nature's red in tooth and in claw [Chorus] Aw yeah, what is that certain je ne se quoi? Aw yeah, it's a stone cold coup d'état Stone cold coup d'état A stone cold coup d'état
I can't really explain the right pronounciation using only English phonemes. The "é" is pronounced like the a in "ay", but without the "y". Kinda like "eh" but more closed. "D'eh-tah", almost, but not quite
Holy crap, I think you're right! (I just checked the fan site and searched youtube) That is crazy. It would be great live. I can only guess that either Flansburgh doesn't like the song, or the harmonies are somehow too difficult to do live.

One of the best songs they've ever written, in a long series of best songs they've ever written.

this feels like if experimental film was on apollo18
Gee, why is this song in my head today?
Oh, you too? How weird is that?!
I'm only just now seeing this comment I have a feeling I know exactly when you made this post
Oh weird. It just came back in our heads
Love how Flansburgh pronounces "d'état" right but Linnell says "day-tah". I just think it's really funny for no reason.
But that IS how it's pronounced, right?
@@GarrettEulett I think its closer to "dee-tah"
@@ewanball No it's not. It's day-tah. (I'm French)

Love how John pronounces it but I also love how John pronounce it, yk
aw yeah! This must be my favorite track.
Some of their best work in years!
I learned how to say "I don't know what" in French from this song.
Lovely.
Here before a video about an anime references this song.
giovanni potage and his son, giorno potage

This song is great, but it need MORE COWBELL!
Going to see them on the 15th ! :D
I wonder if they mean "reigned forever" or "rained forever..."
Corey Both, that's the best part about tmbg
Why not both?
Musicians love homophones.
I think its done with the intent of it having 2 meanings, since thats the theme of the song xD
One of my favorites by THEY MGHT BE GIAVTS ;)
AW YeEAH
Great wacky stuff as is the standard of TMBG
Needs more cowbell. ;-)
Have they ever done this song live? I can't find any videos on youtube.

I'm from Fort Worth, Texas, which is known as Cowtown, among other things. This song speaks to me. :)
The bridge at 1:30 sounds very old school.
Brian Wilson
Wtf. I had a dislike on this vid. Changed to a like
Needs more cowbell.
Well, this either aged horribly or perfectly
did something happen?
@@someone8689 I commented this during the capitol riot
Anyone here from the coup in Korea?
Russia could use one of these.
I think you just may have had your wish granted.
