The entire conceit of this song is very funny because the title makes it sound like it's gonna be some kind of sappy love song and then the actual song is just this poor bewildered man going "no, like, she is *literally* an angel and frankly I'm not even sure how I got into this situation in the first place"
I first heard this song in 1986 because a friend in my dorm had the album. I'm listening to it again today 37 years later because the situation described in it is not far from my own. My angel is a he, not a she, and he returned to heaven last year. But he keeps me company now, and I'd follow him anywhere. You're right, it is bewildering, and I know I'd be put in a rubber room forever if everyone knew the truth. But it's so beautiful and perfect you couldn't pay me a billion dollars to go back. If this is insanity, I hope to leave sanity behind for good. But remember as John says, these things don't happen at all.😉

It's a simple life of poverty filled with prayer and service to the homeless in my city, and all the gloom I'd been in for all those years has been replaced with joy and a slight mania all day long. About 18 years ago, we went to the Electric Factory in Philadelphia... TMBG was headlining. Zebra Head opened, then Reel Big Fish.... both opening bands thanked They Might be Giants for allowing them to open for them. It seemed like many of the kids there had never heard TMBG before and there was some visible skepticism if not out right hostility. A college girl was standing beside us, when TMBG came on stage she and her friends were giving them the finger. John Linnell went to center front stage with a full sized accordion and the band played this song. John Linnell stood with his head cocked, waiting for a response from the largely non fan audience ... The girl said "Oh shit... I didn't know they sounded like that..." and mostly all the kids there were silent for a moment and then roared approval.... it was a magical and wonderful moment, that I will never forget.
I don't go to gigs, so can you explain why the audience's default attitude was hostility? Like, why go to a gig if you're not happy about who's playing? I don't get it.
Chris Hill I think it’s a matter of going to see one of a few bands-one of them happened to be opening. It’s often the case at gigs that (often the opening band) either sucks or just isn’t to your taste. A multiband show where you really enjoy 2 or 3 new bands is a rare treat. On the other hand, the hostility displayed here seemed really OTT, and pretty strange. Just glad it all worked out for our heroes. They’re pretty disarming personalities, to be fair.
This song always makes me think of the times where life in dreams feels so incredibly complete, only to wake up to realize you exist in reality and none of it is actual.
Best They Might Be Giants song ever!! I saw them three times in 1992, as I kept screaming for them to play it and they finally did, as they addressed me in the audience joking around with me. Great guys! great musicians!
I saw them when I was a teenager when they were promoting their Factory Showroom album. It had only been out for a few months but I had memorized all the songs and was shouting along to the music, severely annoying everyone around me. Anyway, I got so caught up in the excitement that I straight up fainted in the middle of the crowd. Not my proudest moment.
I have the original vinyl press release. Got it when it was released. 85/86 I think. I was born in 75'. That made me the weirdest kid in the schoolyard. I still have it in perfect condition. In fact it is so touching that my eye's well up with tears remembering when i played it constantly after my first true love broke up with me. But I still love to listen to it.
Definately the the greatest TMBG song of all time. I went through an entire phase with these guys music, but this and They'll Need a Crane were really the only ones that stick with me.
“Dead” from Flood is one of my faves. I know it seems kind of depressing, but I heard that album at a difficult time of my life, and in an odd way the song seemed comforting. I actually find the line about “Now it’s over, I’m dead, and I haven’t done anything that I want. Or I’m still alive, and there’s nothing I want to do” very motivating. It reminds me not to waste the time I have in the present not doing anything, lest I get to the end and haven’t done anything I wanted. Both situations are just as bad, so accomplish what you want while you can.

The next day we were fairly sure we had something lasting, but the deal wasn't sealed. I recorded a Karaoke video of this song dedicated to her, posting it on Facebook. Then it was. The short answer: TMBG were on a tiny label with limited distribution at the time, and had next to no weight in the record industry circa 1986. They weren't on MTV yet, and their fan base was still basically regional and small. The next album Lincoln in 1988 started to gradually bring Them into the fold, but They didn't really hit the mainstream until Flood in 1990, and even then They were just a bit too offbeat to be record industry hitmakers. I am currently going on epic adventure throughout music that i listened when i was young (well younger I guess). I am currently having nostalgia spasms.
I consider TMBG one of the final bands in the genre of first wave punk in the vein of Talking Heads. Too indie to be New Wave, too post modern to be indie, too weird to be any other kind of punk. Just a first wave punk band that was started too late
I know this is very, very old, but I’m just now getting into their music and I remain absolutely ASTONISHED by Linnell’s breath control? And wasn’t he a smoker??
+The Free Software Foundation Computing Videos: Their earliest stuff was definitely intended to be new-wavey, eventually giving way to a more common & generic "alt-rock" categorization. I personally call them "goofball rock", a term I use for multimodal semi-serious rock-based music.
They have put out an almost unimaginable volume of music, and the library is very diverse. They are genre-less. You can't possibly listen to "Man, Its So Loud In Here" and classify it the same as "Whirlpool" or "Can't Keep Johnny Down".

Ikr. Just emphasizes the narrator's confused happiness.
Linnell writes the most amazing love songs. This, Bangs, TNAC. Brilliant.
Hey. Have a good tour! I wish i was there.
I have spent 10 years trying to remember who made this song.
Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!
Aside from the usual TMBG jibberish, this song is really thoughtful. Really exemplifies the anxiety and fear that comes from falling in love.
Wait, now she’s an angel?
Last time I checked, she was a hotel detective.
..... and then at the peak of my infatuation, someone I am falling in love with whose name is Angel, this song came on. How should I react?
Just try not to throw your body off a building….
@@sonicsophie Yeah, I was right at the edge and was able to pull myself back.
...... SAME. I'm kind of feeling things oop
Gonna speak to the man in charge.
No, Linnell is anti-smoking as far as I know. But his vocal pipes are indeed legendary. Stunning enunciation and note holding and iconic nasally tone.
💛
You tube's software.. knew I would like this...
I know this feeling.
This song is the prequel to Everything Right is Wrong Again
❤️❤️
Thjey played this last night!
Genius
The secretary says he's on another line can I hold for a long long time?
this almost is like a "new wave" sort of music but in a more pop format... what genre are they typically pegged as?
+The Free Software Foundation Computing Videos sorry i meant to say "no wave"
+The Free Software Foundation Computing Videos: Their earliest stuff was definitely intended to be new-wavey, eventually giving way to a more common & generic "alt-rock" categorization. I personally call them "goofball rock", a term I use for multimodal semi-serious rock-based music.
They have put out an almost unimaginable volume of music, and the library is very diverse. They are genre-less. You can't possibly listen to "Man, Its So Loud In Here" and classify it the same as "Whirlpool" or "Can't Keep Johnny Down".
Jonathan Meier Very true. When I said "alt-rock", I was more referring to what section they'd be in at a record store.
+CaptHayfever: In my ideal record store, the answer to your question would be "T."
Is the Angel a puppers? It fits to think so lol Puppers are Angels :)
Let me guess. Millennial?
