Bell Ringing at Buckfast Abbey, Devon - including Hosanna!

  • Ringing on this two-tonne twelve of 1935 Taylor vintage. Footage consists of clips taken inside the ringing room, on the old ringing gallery and in the belfry, and a grab on Hosanna, the 7.5 tonne bourdon also of 1935 Taylor.
    Buckfast has had an Abbey since 1018, but the present magnificent building dates from 1907-1938, built in a Norman/Early English style, and is well worth a visit. During building, there were almost always only 4-6 monks ever working on it at any one time!
    The tower for a time contained a 1910 Warner 12, weighing in at 27-1-26 in C#; these were originally hung for chiming in the Abbott's Tower, finally being hung in the Abbey tower in 1921 when it was completed enough to house a ring. These bells were rung from the open gallery some 60 foot up - much like at Merton College Oxford! - and the rope guides still remain in situ today. This installation only ever had one peal (Stedman Cinques in 3hr50 on October 25 1930, with William Pye calling from the tenor.)
    In 1935, and with the central tower completed, the bells were replaced with a heavier Taylor 12, the ringing room being moved up to what was the belfry and the bells being hung in the new space upstairs. A bourdon bell, Hosanna, was also provided, and we were fortunate enough to be allowed to ring Hosanna 15 minutes before the service, giving us all a chance to "grab" the bell before lowering the back 10 (with Hosanna booming away in the background!)
    Tenor 41-1-3 in C

    Why is one of them not being used?

    • @simonbellringer
      @simonbellringer  Год назад +1

      Ah - it's a semitone bell, so not needed for the main peal but can be used to give a lighter ring of eight bells, using a subset of the main peal (excluding the natural second bell and four biggest bells (tenors).

    Peal of 12 sounds like Bow bells

    • @simonbellringer
      @simonbellringer  5 лет назад +1

      Yes - similar weight and key to Bow. A shame the poor acoustics and rope circle inside means they aren't nearly as good as Bow, although they are admittedly easier to handle

    The acoustics from the ringing chamber seem to be very disappointing, they sound great from the old ringing platform though! Perhaps should be moved back...

    It would certainly suck to have to hear that whenever the "change ringers" got together for a "play date". But with the whole state church and all, I'm sure there's not much a "citizen" sick of listening to that can do about it.
