Hiccup (Tawin Yavapolkul) is a Norse teenager from the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. His progressive views and weird sense of humor make him a misfit, despite the fact that his father (Kongkrapunt Sangsuriya) is chief of the clan. Tossed into dragon-fighting school, he endeavors to prove himself as a true Viking, but when he befriends an injured dragon he names Toothless, he has the chance to plot a new course for his people's future.

If I remember correctly a lot of early cultures in Northern Europe would give their children a "bad names" to prevent jealous gods, spirits or fae from taking too much notice of them. A daughter name Beauty might be kidnapped by fairies, a boy named Strength might be cursed with weakness or early death. But a child called Scrunchy McRatface might just grow up to become a member of the clan. Then once they reached adult hood, they would choose or be given their proper name.
The books (by Credessa Crowell) explain the tradition behind Hiccup's name. In their clan runts are named Hiccup. The MC's full name Horrendous Hiccup Haddock the Third, and he is the grandson of Horendous Hiccup Haddock the Second. Who was a also a hero.

Toothless is essentially a 30-foot long winged cat.
In fact I heard that Toothless was designed after the lead animator's pet cat.
I always appreciated the scene after "You're not my son" so much, where you can just watch the realization of what he just said HIT Stoick...

How to Train your Dragon and Kung-Fu Panda. These two franchises are just awesome. The proper Disney-Pixar challengers in animation.
This is just an absolutely beautiful trilogy that ages like fine wine

I live here in Tennessee and my family has big Nordic roots. My daughter has embraced her culture and history and she's happy to learn about our family business which is beekeeping. She can do whatever she wants with her life but she understands I'm teaching her all my knowledge so that she has these life skills. I have a bachelors degree in entomology and she will be gaining all my knowledge for absolutely free. Our land and apiary have been in the family since 1815. Every year we celebrate the summer solstice with the neighbors and drink homemade mead, from a 150 year old family recipe. Psilocybin mushrooms are also a huge part of our religion and culture.

I often describe things that happen as "an occupational hazard".
I watched this with my daughter, and when she heard Hiccup say "I'm a Viking, Dad! It's an occupational hazard," and the understanding way she looked at me had me in tears.

How to Train Your Dragon is one of the best animated movies, in my opinion, as well as Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
If you want to continue crying, keep watching the series. The emotions and stakes only go up. Props to the creators of this movie for putting two disabled characters in as main characters of the film, then allowing them to be utterly badass throughout the rest of their arcs.

There are 2 more movies you need to watch whenever you get a chance, is httyd 2 then httyd the hidden world, then there's another version coming out eventually. httyd means how to train your dragon for those who don't know. (sorry for being a nerd but just wanted for people to know about what i'm talking about)
