- #51. I am 1,000 miles in and wanted to give an update on fuel mileage, likes, and dislikes. There is not much I don't like so far except the tailgate. That tailgate was the worst idea Chevy ever had.

I keep reading the milage gets better with break in. Mine isnt built yet but i ordered the flex tailgate and i'm pretty excited about that feature. I do prefer a normal handle but i still have 70s and 80s trucks to even it out. To open my Humvee tailgate i have to jack up the rhino spare tire mount, swing it to the side, and unhook the tailgate chains, lower and rehook the chains its still fun for me. Patience helps with these things.

It doesn't really, truck hates city driving.....freeway is decent, actually pretty good for how big they are
If you want to get better mileage, MPGs, make sure your tire pressure is set at the max allowed, although it makes for a rougher ride overall, AND do not ride too fast. I get on average about 21,2 mpgs on a winding and slightly hilly road, with the same truck, but ok they may be canadian gallons, so that could be 17,7 mpgs with US gallons. BUT that is riding with no load and at an average speed of 40 to 45 mph. That may be too slow a ride for a lot of people, but that is the actual fuel economy that you would get. That is more of an issue HERE since the fuel costs nearly 50% more than the price you have in US, like 4,50 US$ a US gallon for regular gasoline and slightly more for diesel fuel.
Completely agree with you for the electronic tailgate by the way, just one more fussy gimmick that is most likely to break down that very one time when you will need it.

@@cabinviewventures Well, yes, I guess so. Mines are 265 -70 - 17 inch aluminium, which means about 31,5 inch, but this was not my choice, I wish to change them for standard GM 18'' steel with 275 - 70 tires that should make about 33'' diameter.
33” would be perfect. The off road package on my truck has the 275/65-20 which come out to 34”x11”. They look great but def impact fuel mileage.
I use the tailgate release button in the cab and it’s already down by the time I get out of the truck and back there.
That feature does work well.
If you want order a gate for a custom, which is a lower end truck, it's sold school gate with a handle, you will have to figure out the added parts that you will need
Yesterday, my wife and I bought a '24 2500HD High Country, w/ 6.6l V8 and Allison Tranny. I knew that the gas efficiency would not be that good. This truck will primarily be used to pull our toy hauler around the country. So, I'm not too worried about the MPG.. It is what it is. That reminds me that I don't yet know how big the gas tank is. I'll be really disappointed if it's much less than 35 gallons. Having to make a bunch of gas stops on a long pull is not fun (having to navigate long rigs into and out of gas stations. That's an area where a diesel is nice - being able to use truck stops to full up, although there aren't as many as there are gas stations). Ours has the multi-segment tailgate (I can't think of the right name for it). I didn't need it, but I don't mind it. I haven't opened it enough to know if the slowness to open is going to irritate me, but I doubt that it will (I'm not quite THAT impatient.... LOL). I really liked the payload and towing numbers. My wife is really digging the nice interior and crazy-smooth ride. I expect that I'm going to be really happy with our 2500 HC gasser. Oh, price. Still stupid high. As we were closing the deal, I looked over at my wife and told here that we could've gotten a new Stingray Corvette for only a few dollars more.
Congrats on your purchase! It really is a great truck and for the same price as a 1/2 ton. They are expensive but still a pretty good value. Your tank should be 36 gallons. I think that’s standard with Chevy unless you get the long bed. Fit and finish is great and the ride is the best of all 3/4 tons. I’m at 3500 miles and around town average is 10.9. My truck has the 34”x11” tires from factory which does not help.
@@cabinviewventures, I agree wholeheartedly on the ride. It is outstanding. The front and rear suspension are great. I haven't yet, but am anxious to, hook up to our 33' bumper-pull toy hauler (around 10K, when fully loaded with my Harley) and pull it up a nice-grade hill. I expect it to pull great. It was a chunk of change, more than a truck should cost, but overall, I have no regrets because I know that I will keep this truck for a LONG time and will run the wheels off of it... many times. My wife loves it (especially the aesthetics and ride comfort). If Momma ain't happy... :-) We're very happy with the purchase and are looking forward to many long tows/trips around the country, after I fully retire in a few months. We're headed to Colorado Springs in July, to ride five 10kft passes in one day, with the Colorado Springs Harley Owners Group Chapter. That'll be a fantastic trip for the new 2500 HC and great riding on the Harley!

Thanks for the honest review sir! I am seriously thinking of upgrading to a gas hd but right now my ford 150 hydrid averages about 21 unloaded highway and 23 ro 34 around town. Plenty of power but eventually i want a truck camper lol
I have had lots of 1/2 tons. The 3/4 is really nice when you’re towing and hauling. Makes things much easier and you feel more confident. The size of the truck doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. Still fits through all my favorite fast food lines haha. Happy to report I am seeing some increase in mpg almost at 2k miles. I have a 2018 Ram Cummins 4X4 I bought new. It has 48K miles now. I get 13-14 mpg pulling a giant tritoon or a 3-horse trailer. It’ll get 20 mpg on the interstate unloaded, but I use it 99% for towing. My daily driver 2001 Ram 1500 4X4 with 5” lift and 32” tires and a 5-speed manual gets 16 mpg on the freeway, and only drops to 15 mpg loaded down with hunting gear and a Polaris ATV in the bed. I have less than $60K in both those trucks, combined.
The good old days of a 1/2 ton with manual transmission. It would be nice if someone would offer a regular cab, v8, manual transmission and crank windows! We will see how that 6.6 breaks in.
That’s 4mpg better than any of my friends with a newer Cummins
I bought one exactly like yours (same color) and have about 400 miles on it now. Gets about 13.5 all around. Rides a little hard with the recommended 60 front and 80 back tire pressures. I have reduced the rear pressure to 60 and it does ride better. Will be following on up dates to see if you have any problems. I'm with you, I would rather have latch tailgate. Keep us posted on the reliability of the truck and if you have any problems. The only thing I don't like is the high step in even with running boards. I am thinking about adding AMP electric step boads with will help with the step in, bit they cost about $2000, but I think they will be worth it. Keep us updated on your truck
Congrats on the truck! I think those big 34” tires hurt the mpg a little but well worth it. I’m only at 4500 miles, no issue yet and it drives really nice for a big truck.
I got the multi flex tail and love it. My 2024 3500 gasser has averaged 12.7 over 10,000 miles. $60k for a 1/2 ton doesnt make sense to me. $60k for a HD does. Turning radius is the biggest negative compared to 1/2 ton.

My 2500 averaged 18 mpg on the highway for vacation last summer.
I’m up to 15 highway at 3500 miles. The 34” tires don’t help.
I really like the tailgate on my 2024 high country gasser. That extra 1.3 seconds to lower isn’t gonna affect my life one iota. What’s your hurry ?

I’ve had three Silverado HDs in a row , 02,08, 017, great trucks, but the mileage is no longer tenable , I can’t reconcile 10 mpg anymore, bought a Toyota Tundra limited V6 twin turbo, great power and getting 18mpg average on regular , ever going back to that 10 mpg EVER
You really need a second vehicle if you own a 3/4 ton.
Thanks for sharing your real-world mileage experience. Do you have any work that justifies the 3/4 ton truck, or is it just a nice-to-have for you? I'm looking to upgrade my 2010 this year and am leaning towards a 1/2 ton between the initial cost savings and fuel consumption.
I could definitely get away with a 1/2 ton for most of my towing. The extra size and capacity of the 3/4 ton is really nice to have. I tow the Kubota L3901 and attachments and lots of firewood. I can fit a 1/2 cord in the bed. I’m looking to buy a 14k trailer and mini excavator in the next year and didnt want to upgrade trucks again. The weight of a 3/4 ton and 14k trailer keeps me under the cdl requirements. This is not a daily driver for me. If it was I probably would have gone 1/2 ton and looked for a used 3/4 ton.

Funny how different things rub people different ways. I have a 24 with 3500 miles on it. The mileage did get a little better after about 1500 miles. I have the flex tailgate and I absolutely love it. Getting in and out is a breeze and abused it more times than I can count already ! All my old Chevy trucks with That damn tailgate handle wasn't lockable and was plastic and broke all the time! I much rather push a button. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
I won’t give up on it yet. I have been in the auto industry for 20 years. Change always takes a little getting use to then it becomes the norm. Thanks for commenting!
I’ve got a 2024 HD LT with the Duramax and I’m averaging 15 around town and 20 Highway. The ride and drive quality is great. I’m not a huge fan of the tailgate either, also the headlights are awful. I’m replacing mine with LED bulbs…
If I did more highway driving I would definitely go with the duramax.

@@H-RutherfordHillwhen I got my first diesel truck over 20 years ago diesel fuel was much cheaper then gasoline, no egr, no def, plus diesel trucks was not much more expensive than gas trucks. So I drove nothing but Cummins, working on construction, pulling trailers and toys. But now they want 10k more for diesel truck, $1 more for fuel, plus def, plus very expensive maintenance with no option to delete all that garbage off the truck . I decided it’s time to try gas truck, and I trust gm gas truck over ram/ford, after they put 10 speed Alison on gas that was my final decision to switch. Even though ram was $9k cheaper for 6.4 hemi , I went with gm+Alison.
I thought the fuel mileage in my 2023 Ram 2500 Power Wagon was bad, your 6.6 makes me feel good about my 12 MPG from the 6.4 with 4:10 gears. Good review. I also hate all the crazy tail gates. My last truck was a 2020 Trail Boss. Great 1500, but also had the push and wait button for the tail gate.
The 6.4 with 4:10 rear is a great setup! We will see how that 6.6 breaks in.
I have a 2024 3500 single wheel long bed. I get 13mpg with mine i have 4500 miles on it.i have had over 18000lbs behind my truck it work great

Seriously. The ability to lock them nowadays is fantastic especially when you have a tonneau cover. And the multi- pro gate adds amazing versatility.

Do the seat cushions have more padding? I have a 2020 and they are horrible, rock hard, narrow and short, im 6-2

Do you have a heavy foot? I have a 2022 6.6 gasser and majority of my driving is city driving with tons of red lights and stop signs. I average 12.5-13 mpg by hand calculations. My fuel mileage meter is usually optimistic by .8-1.2 mpg.
Nope, driving very conservative. Only at 1,400 miles though. I think it will improve once I get to 5k miles. Just surprised the 10 speed didn’t help more
@@cabinviewventures I thought my 2013 Chevy 2500 would improve on mileage as it got broke in. I was highly disappointed that it never got any better. I only averages 12-13 with a mix of driving. Want a 2500 on my next one but not sure I won't bump down to a 1500 with the 3.0 duramax. If the tow rating is high enough, I could probably live with the smaller truck and I only occasionally have to transport my Bobcat for service so could live with the trailer being in control during those times.

I agree I was shopping for a new truck in 2020 horrible time to shop but I drove 2 hours away to a dealership in madisonville Texas found a new gasser dually LT crew cab long bed 4x4 for 78k I laughed at it and told them I could build the same truck online for 53k and wait 6 months with 3 hours of negotiating I financed the truck for 56k they paid my trade off and gave me 3500 for it with the incentives they were running they added 2k onto the trade so 5500 for the trade they came down on the price because 78k for a LT gas dually is laughable I currently have 70k miles zero issues just hauling a flat deck gooseneck loaded with hay trailer and hay combined 18k-20k sometimes will add a loader depending on if customer has one the truck doesn’t struggle with the weight not many hills here in Texas. 9.5 MPG is crazy I get 12-13 unloaded and when hauling I’m get 8-9.
That’s good to hear. I’m at 1400 miles now. I would expect that to increase as I get closer to 5,000 miles. All of my driving is hilly back roads

I have a 2024 Silverado HD and I am experiencing a groaning noise while parking and a chirping noise from 27 to 40 Mph, have you experienced anything like this with your truck?

What fuel are you using, and are you towing? Another mechanic channel was commenting on the mystery noise and he suspected that it had to do with premature combustion in low octane fuel.
What state are you in ? You have good roads there.

You will absolutely love the flex tailgate. I thought it was a gimmick myself but I used it many many times already and i only have 3500 miles on my truck. You will really appreciate being able to get in and out. It's a breeze! And also it lets you get closer to the truck so you can reach things in the bed.
Must not lift heavy things into your bed often if you think the new tailgates are a gimmick. I lift 80lb bags in and out of the bed all the time and it is very nice to have the new gimmicky tailgate that allows me to get right up to the truck instead of leaning across the tailgate.
Mine is the standard tailgate not multi. Seems like a lot of people don’t realize they offer both. I just don’t see the need for the auto opening function.

Has a hard shift between 7th and 8th gear.
I havnt had any transmission problems to complain about. Maybe they can reflash the control module for you.

That truck weighs over 7500 lbs. and has a 403 cu. in. engine. It will probably get better fuel mileage when the engine gets more miles on it. Keep the oil changed and take care of it. Best wishes.

I live in a pretty hilly area. With 3,000 miles my average is up to 11 but it has seemed to stall there. It’s got to be the 34” tires.

That’s a rubber stall mat I bought at tractor supply. I actually got it as a bed liner for the can am defender but like using it in the truck when hauling my chainsaws.
Chevy isn't worried about the tailgate issue bud, 97% of the drivers will never use that truck for hauling stuff anyways. As for mpg, thats considered normal, nobody buys a HD gasser n ever worries about mpg, I just hauled a bed full of scrap aluminum aftercoolers for beer money in a Ford 6.8 and you can watch the fuel gauge move if you bump the pedal .
Maybe 1/2 tons but I’m sure most 3/4 tons buyers are towing. They should save that fancy tailgate for the high trims levels. Thanks for commenting!

How many miles on your truck? I have been really easy on this thing. I am seeing a little increase now that I’m over 1500 miles. I would be really happy with 17.5. Even a 12 average in a 3/4 ton is good

I feel the opposite of you when it comes to the tailgate; Although I get what your saying. That slow moving tailgate gave me enough time to stop it from slamming into my hitch setup LOl yes me being carless. That slow moving tailgate saved my nephews head who tags onto his dad and when letting go of the tailgate not realizing his son was standing under it, and hit him on the head, a scratch only. Now if that tailgate would had just drop old school, things could had been much uglier. Listen that tailgate gives you a moment to breath and just maybe respond on time.........

2024 3500, got 18 mpg on the way home from the dealer. You are not thinking clearly on the tailgate, hit the button as you step out of the truck, its open waiting for you.😂 or as you are still 100 feet away, hit the remote button 🙄

Your right GM 2500s are best riding HD trucks on the market especially empty, not a ton of difference between a 1/2 ton but so much more capable

But even then it’s big, its HD with a 6.6 gas. It’s heavy so putting regular makes the mpg so much worse
