- These figures, know as the Bullet Train Team, are a lot of fun. It's nice to see each toy get it's own, unique transformation. Sadly my set has not held up that well.
In the USA these figures were called RailSpike, RapidRun and Midnight Express. In Japan they were named J5, J7 and J4.

I love how every robot in the Braves series, as well as R.I.D, have super huge shoulders. They just look so cool.
Funny that in RID 2015 everyone also had big shoulders
With the theme of Transformers Legacy, I'd love to see a remaster of these guys. Especially with the massive improvements in engineering since these guys are very illusive and I really like these guys.
I really hate legacy. Its pure laziness but I'd do anything to get Omega Prime Landfill Railracer and Ruinanation

@@theturnedtable2605 me personally, I still hate legacy. Especially after what they did to the animated and prime crew. They're turning everything into a "G1" variation and it's so damn annoying. Just make an accurate version of our favourite robots for my sake!
Surprised we haven't gotten a new version of Rail Racer.
I’d love to see this be re-mastered to fix all the issues that there are and maybe even modernise it.
_Especially_ the clear plastic the Takara release has. Buy the Hasbro version if you want him.

@@NotMyRealName6 not the easiest figure to find, it seems? i’ve taken an extended break from collecting transformers but i’ve found myself wanting some RID figures again (nostalgia, i guess) and it seems like i can expect to pay around $150-200 USD for a loose set, haha. maybe in a few months’ time
Takara has a train-themed transformers line that isn’t transformers. I’d say that’s as close as you will get. They look very similar to these

I think Midnight Express/J 4's Right heel is supposed to twist around and have the wheels facing down, like every other heel for all of the robots.
Railspike and Midnight Express have shoulder pads that would make Rob Liefeld jealous!😂
I had all three of the US versions when the show was on. The problems for the ones I had were the same. The more often you combined them, the looser each became. To the point they came apart often.
They should've brought the bullet train team to the Michael bay movies that would've been crazy to see
While that would be cool, American trains don't really go fast, as in bullet train fast and are built for distance. Also you can't use their alternate mode to advertise a newest model of train that to the general audience, so no extra money for explosions.
I like how the Autobots' side of Car Robots had combiners, duocons in Ultra Magnus and Prime etc Meanwhile the Predacons had a leader who was a Ten Former...
If it weren't for these toys being able to combine I'd have serious issues with the proportions (_SUCH TINY ARMS_) , as such I feel J-7 looks the the most decent by himself.

The U.S. versions of these guys were the first Transformers I ever owned, and they still have a special place in my collection. And I'm glad to see you finally reviewing them.
About Rapid Run's arms. I've never taken them out of their "curled" position in the combined form, which causes the jet pack to spread out more. (Also, I pull his feet sections out, and have the heels folded straight down, making the entire thing look something like a giant claw.)

Man, I've been miss transforming JRX's shoulders for years
I remember going to walmart as a kid and hoping they had the next train in stock. I finally got all of them and they are all great. It's been a while since I've messed with them but I can't remember having so many issues with the joints. It definitely is top-heavy and not a very balanced figure.
I'd really like to have these figures, as I always thought they were cool on the show. Part of me also kind of wishes the bullet trains are brought back in a future Transformers cartoon/game/film/comic/whatever.
I love these guys so much. Between these guys, Ultra Magnus and Scourge/Nemesis Prime, there my favorites from the RID line. I have Ultra Magnus and Scourge/Nemesis. But i can not fine these guys together for less than 100 dollars and i want them so bad. lol
I had all 3 years ago whwn they came out. I do remember them having all the same issuea. I'm fair positive that they are the same between the American and Japanese releases.
Mostly the same. The American release replaced nearly all the transucient plastic and painted the windows instead.

The head on J7 kinda reminds me of Magi Garuda from Magiranger =)
one of the all time best combiner sets in TF history. Just watch the backpack on the core figure, theres a snapable clear plastic part that'll make you cry if it breaks
If they make a new Mindnight-Express using the Titans Return Sentail Prime mold it would be prefect because they have the transformation.

Awww you were too hard on the combined mode, for it's day that was pretty good! the head sculpt was fantastic! Sure some of the connections were fiddly, but it was a great set in its time.

this is one of my favorite combiner in the show.
I loved the design of this entire line. Omega Prime and this guy as badass combiners, the Autobot brothers, Sky Byte and Megatron's designs. Just my favorite line
The Japanese Rapid Run breaks really easily at the doors that conceal the arms. Because they are made out of clear plastic that is just painted over, the plastic is brittle. I have gone through three(!) of these and the last one I don't even dare transform because I'm afraid it's going to break at the hinge. While it was great that Takara made these with clear windows, it's a bummer that this one breaks easily. The US version is made of stronger plastic so it doesn't usually break.
When I was a kid I didn't know this series was entirely Japanese and dubbed for U.S which explains the sleeker and more japanese inspired designs of the robots from this series

I have the solo packed Japanese versions and I've never had a problem with the leg joints sliding down or J-5's legs popping off. On my set J-7's shoulders constantly pop off, but other than that everything is nice and solid.
I have the rid versions of these guys, now I admit paint details isn’t as good as they're not painted clear plastic, but that might have something to do with why mine is a lot more sturdy.
I’ve never had any issues with loose joints or him falling over, it might mean the clear plastic is simply looser.
It kills me how one of them is literally called Midnight Express
Grear video! Being a Japanese Rail fan, i love the shinkansens, thus i love this set!
@ Z Belacic: There's no J-6 as there is no 600 series shinkansen. There's 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 700, N700, 800 but just no 600. I dont know why either~~
Are these sets licensed by JR?? Saw the Railstar, 500 and Max emblem on them...
RID 2001 / Car Robot is one of the lines that truly.....TRULY deserved a REISSUE. Yeah yeah i know. We had Encore God Fire Convoy set. But we hoped for more. If anything, the entire cast deserved a reissue run.

I have these and to me the genius is that they figured out how to get the hands and head built into the engineering for the combined mode. Compared to devestator that has plug in head and hands

I have the American version. I have the same problem in the knees, just not as bad. The arms don't pop off easy though so that's good. But I have a few other problems with mine but that might be because of age/use cause I got mine when R.I.D. was airing in the US. The side skirts/arm ball joints on Midnight Express wont stay on now without help, 1 wheel on Rapped Run broke off, the peg on R.R. wont stay into M.E., & 1 of the finger pins keeps wanting to fall out.
I have new names for them. Pointy chest, huge legs, and long shoulder pads. Very weird proportions but it comes in handy with the combined mode

Hasbro is cheap like that. the Takara version has actual windows.
well the takara version had qc problems regarding the paint on the windows, sooooo Hasbro for the win this time
it's ironic that JRX is pronounced like "jerks" to the ones unfamiliar to the transformers franchise... Not saying that to offend anyone...

None of the joints pops out on mine but the legs are annoying as I recall. That said, I have had mine since new and it's been in the same pose for many years (maybe even a decade) in my old room at my folk's place. Makes me smile each time I see him when I'm over there.
Railspike, Rapid Run, & Midnight Express...bought them back in 02 I believe...still have them to this day...lost Midnight Express' box but still have the other two
It’s interesting that legacy evolution RID scourge, basically has the same waist transformation as J-7.

I know this review is old at this point, but that waist piece is only meant to slide down for Midnight Express and stay up for Rail Racer.

I had/have J7, i thought it wasnt the best, but after seeing the others and their transformation and robot modes, i think im glad i got it back then. Though i had no idea they combined (didnt watch the show much, nor do i remember the box or directions say anything about it)

I've found on mine if you pull up rapid runs legs as shoulder cannons it helps the balance a bit to the point he can stand up without falling.
I actually love how those guys look.
They should have made one robot train with two passenger cars that combine to from the super transformation.

Got it last year, a used one as a part of a large buy. It doesn't display any of the issues you mention and on the contrary it have insanely tight joints, especially in the toes of the robots. Plus I usually display the set in the combined form basically since I bought it with occasionally display of the single pieces and it didn't affected the legs of the combined mode. As someone else said it's probably a problem of your set. Nice review as always
It was funny that in Carrobot the combiners went 3,4,5 the five member team being the oldest design.
I had RailSpike and Midnight Express but could never find RapidRun in stores back when I was a kid.
The railway terminology for the so called hitch is called the coach coupling.
the problem with the legs in combined mode, can be solved if you use a stand for figures, so the weight will rest over the stand and no over the legs

Yes, the American versions suffer the same problems(the Japanese versions look cool though). I own all 3 American versions of the bullet trains(I actually own quite a few of the American versions of the Transformers from the series: "Transformers: Robots in Disguise"). I actually used your video(which was helpful)to transform the 3 trains and combine them, because I forgot how to transform them. I thought it was real cool for 3 bullet trains to merge into one robot. They don't make them like they used to though back in the day. Oh how I miss the 80's.

Igot mine a few years ago,idid not even know what theybwerer till recently...ihave to agree its a cool set ..iwish his combined mode would have been better weight wise,maybe better interlockingsystemfor combo mode. But allin all im happy withit its quite unique. In its combo mode

I also have the US set and I've had no trouble whatsoever. This review kinda hurt the toy's reputation but then I own a different version. But really, this is an awesome awesome combiner.
It feels like it should have only been two figures that combine. Because the gray train becomes nothing but a big backpack.

Midnight express is the most annoying to transform because if your too rough on the legs where the plastic kneecap area is you can break and crack the friction between the thigh mid area causing the figure to not stand right up anymore trust me I had to go through it before just be wary and follow the instructions very carefully when transforming 2001 rid figures are very difficult to own and are made out of not the best materials

Supertrain megazord is many times bigger, so it could easily win
the biggest difference are that the japanese version has transluscent windows while the american they are a solid piece painted over

Was there ever a US release of any of these? I definitely remember getting the 500 one from a walgreens as a kid.
Sounds just like the wear of time more than anything else. Then, there are always the duds in any toy mold. You can have 9 perfectly fine Rail Racers, and the tenth will have legitimate QC problems. I've got a few figures myself with defects that others haven't experienced.
I like the transformers before 2007 when the movies we're made but transformers back then looked accurate to it's anime/cartoon counter part

Don't think it will happen it won't its a great figure still so its unlikely it will get an update like ever
Balt/or anyone else curious.... a little hint for the weak legs. On the back you will find two small openings right below the knee. I shoved a folded up twist tie into those holes and now the legs do not have the collapsing problem. I suppose you could use some toothpicks too.. something small and sturdy. Now mine stands great.

also I've had a few versions of this figure and things like the week knees bad ball joits and pop off head, I've never un into any of that. Transformers though are a luck of the draw type deal when it comes to QC. For anyone interested you can get the Sonokong version pretty easy & I havent seen any major QC issues with those. Outside of my first go and one break I've had the figure active & poorly packed in moves since it came out & it still holds up.

No i actually meant it looks like the helmet of Gao Yellow from Hyakujuu Senati Gaoranger but thats just my opinion :p
