    It is amazing how smooth the props rotate at with 60 frames per second! The A400M is designed as a very capable short field and unimproved field aircraft. This is best achieved with turboprops. It is designed to carry more weight at lower speeds, with the ability to fly most places turbofan aircraft can't go. As speed increases, turboprops add significant drag, so that payload goes down and fuel consumption goes up. The A400M is not designed to fly long distance routes like a jet airliner.
    The C-17 on the other hand, the other most modern and similar short-field counterpart to the A400M, is designed to fly longer and faster routes. This is best achieved with turbofans. Also, it is simply too big, from a practical engineering standpoint, to use turboprops, given current technology.

    I started watching this on my PC while looking on my iPad for military aircraft flying in my area and the same aircraft was crossing the UK coast.

    Very cool aircraft. Sat in the cockpit of 408 this afternoon.
    Also, 24P and 1/60th shutter speed works wonders with props. ;-)

    Love to see a turbo prop airplane of this size do a "cobra", lol, but seriously, I love the propellers on this aircraft

    this is pretty much the turboprop version of the C-17. all this bird needs is 3100 feet of smooth runway to lift off and only 2100 feet to land and stop safely

    Can somebody explain to me why a big plane like this has propellers instead of jet engines like the ones A380 or 747 have?

    • @MasterWort
      @MasterWort 8 лет назад +3

      +James Crown There's a number of factors that lead to the decision to use a turboprop engine over a turbofan engine (your typical jet engine).
      -Shorter take-offs. Turboprops perform better at short take-off and landings, which increases the versatility of the vehicle. Turboprops can handle lower air speeds better, thus the plane doesn't have as great a risk of stalling when taking off at lower speeds. The Hercules is a military transport so landing in sub-optimal airstrips is a very likely possibility.
      -Fuel Efficiency. At sub-sonic speeds, turboprops have a higher fuel efficiency compared to turbofans. A comparison between similarly sized passenger aircrafts found that the turboprop burned about 2/3 the fueld per passenger compared to the turbofan. The Hercules is required to fly long distances so fuel-efficiency is key.
      -Operating conditions. Turbofans offer two major features over turboprops - supersonic speeds, and a high operating ceiling. Turbofans (jet engines) can potentially fly faster and higher than a turboprop plane can. These two features, however, are not necessary for the Hercules. It cannot fly at super-sonic speeds with heavy payloads, and it can already achieve a 33,000ft operating ceiling.

      FYI, this aircraft is designated "Atlas" by the Royal Air Force, not "Hercules". The Lockheed C-130 Hercules has been in operation since the 1950s. The A400M is designed to fill the gap between the C-130 and the C-17 aircraft.
