Canada almost bought them, we need transport aircraft for Afghanistan and looked at the A400M Atlas, but it was a couple of years behind schedule and gained weight as it went cutting back on the carego capacity, so the RCAF bought the C-17 instead. That's how we got the CC-117 GlobeMaster III. Canada didn't invest any money in the A400M, so we didn't lose anything. The French Air Force has them too, but made an arrangement to use our CC-117 to airlift supplies to the mission in Mali.

My first three plane rides were in a C-130. The first one was from MCB Camp Pendleton to MCB 29 Palms. It was a short ride but I loved it. The entire time I was glued to the porthole because it was a big thrill for this 19 YO Marine. My 2nd plane ride was in a 130 again from Okinawa to Wake Island to MCAS in Oahu, with the final leg to El Toro. Finally, I rode from Chu Lai in 'Nam to MCB in Japan (I can't remember the name). From there I rode in a C-141 to El Toro. Since I was going on emergency leave all seats were booked. I straddled my sea bag the 15 hours it took to get home.

I watched this from a hilltop at RIAT a few years back and it did this insane dive straight toward us ,I actually feared for my life as it came at us, then in an instant it pulled out the dive like a child twisting a toy plane .Good god this A400M is amazing .I see it most days now heading out of Brize Norton and you just can't mistake the noise it makes . .
