I appreciate your patience and support, and I have good news for you: That's what this channel is focusing on in 2025. I said this in some other recent comments, but I spent the last couple years trying other types of content on this channel that took time away from game dev. My next video is a 2024 dungeon crawler roundup releasing in a week or so, but after that, it's going to be all about this project for a while. I went back to it recently and have chipped away at some progress over the last couple months. I've posted some character/enemy designs and UI mockups on social media, too, btw.
As someone who used to create random dungeon crawler games with ATB battle systems, crafting, progressive and rare monster fighting games in EXCEL, trust me when I say I think RPG Maker should be fine for this! I wouldn't worry about anyone who thinks otherwise! :) I also started working on an indie project of my own a few years ago that I also lost progress on due to a similar reason - I totally relate to this and I'm glad that starting over made me feel MORE comfortable on working on it! Mine was VR Sci-Fi dungeon crawling through Unity, think Phantasy Star Online in VR with 3 others co-op, but with more room randomisation! Really looking forward to hearing more progress on this - Dungeon Crawling is my absolute jam and love seeing people work on their passion!
Hey, Ashenbubs! Thanks so much. I am excited to keep working on it and share more of my progress soon. I'm bummed to hear you lost progress on your PSO VR project. PSO is one of my all time favorites, and is one of my biggest inspirations on this game and Super Mutant Slayers, and your VR dungeon crawler sounds like a rad idea! I actually may do a nostalgia video here soon on PSO. But anyway, thanks again for the support!
Those are my feelings exactly. As someone that just wants to make simple RPGs, it's an excellent tool with a lot more flexibility than it people realize.
True I am working as a hobby on a game in RPG maker MZ and thanks to plugins and the help of the community in the Forums you can do many things. For example I use a code made by someone else( they provide it for free) to get line of sight and then I used it not only for managing overworld encounters but did a whole crime and report crime system with this just by myself. RPG Maker can be strong if you know how to use it. Many don't and I think the bad Reputation comes from games that are quickly done with rpg maker which only use the runtime assets which is finde but then the game has to be good which often is not the case sadly.
This is looking great so far! It sucks your house got broken into. It's such a horrible feeling when that happens. Glad you're still working on this though! I'm liking the turn-based combat too.
Thanks, @metaRising! Yeah, the break in was rough, and a lot to bounce back from. But in a weird way it helped to refocus the project and things are going smoothly for now.
Ahhh, I also love japanese dungeon crawlers. After playing Labyrinth of Galleria lately, I also started working on a DRPG in RMMV. I hope you're still working on this game and that I can give it a play one day :D please let me know!
Oh, awesome! DRPGs are the best. I'm still working on this game--took a hiatus to make the Metroid documentary, but I still plan to finish and release it one day. I made a smaller DRPG last year, though, in case you're interested! I talk about it in one of my other videos, "I Made A Dungeon Crawler In 30 Days."
@@TheCrawl yeah, watched the vid and heading to itch soon to explore the tower! ;) Let me know if I can be of help for your sci-fi game. I love creating gameplay systems, so if you need anything, just reach out!
Fun fact: There's a script specifically for this kind of game for RPG Makers as old as XP called FPLE (There's also a VX Axe and MV version). I've been messing around with that version of it since it runs really well on my old laptop, and its interesting using an older RM for once. (I'd have tried out MV3D, but I just could not wrap my head around it. Lol) Anyway, not sure how much progress you've made on this since this video was uploaded, but it looks good! RPG Maker doesn't deserve the negative reputation it has, just cause people *can* make bad games with it (That goes for *any* engine), so it's always cool to me to see people using it.
@@TheCrawl I've only just started messing with it, so it'll probably be a bit before I have anything concrete (Rn what I have is just default RMXP in first-person), but I do plan on putting it somewhere if I end up using it beyond making a prototype.
It always amazes what people are able to create in RPG Maker, outside of a typical top-down JRPG style game. I think it's an engine that deserves a lot more credit than some people are willing to give it. I think the visuals of the game are looking great so far, though the lack of viewing distance in some of the dungeons shown might be a bit troubling when adventuring around. Will you consider maybe giving the player a Light spell/skill that Illuminates the area a bit better for a time, kind of like DQ1's Radiant spell? And as for the map, if you were thinking of changing how the map is handled, I think maybe the map being an item you can look back at when you need it, instead of always updating in the corner, would work just as nicely. Another way might be like in Shining in the Darkness, where I believe one of the characters gets a spell to show a map, but I think people would probably like something they can use for free. It looks like a project that's shaping up well, though! When I first saw your game, my mind immediately went to "Cool, a new Wizardry!" and then you said you wanted it to be more light-hearted and then it became "Cool, a new Wizardry I might actually be able to beat!" Best of luck on developing the game, I look forward to more devlogs!
Hey, thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and offer feedback. You've pretty much nailed the major mechanics I'm working on. I scrapped the on-screen minimap in favor of a map item you check. As for the draw distance, I'm still trying to find a sweet spot that maintains a sense of mystery and atmosphere, while also feeling explorable. I also have an equivalent of the radiant spell from DQ1 to help with that. In fact, as a single-character RPG, DQ1's combat and simplified mechanics have been a major source of inspiration overall. The majority of my current work is on the art for the game. I'm hoping to have enough done to show off in another dev log before the end of the year.
@@TheCrawl Glad to hear about the Radiant spell equivalent. If we get something like that, I think the more darker areas will be fine to traverse through. I'm envisioning scenes of running out of MP and feeling like I'm groping around in the dark back to the exit, which might make for a cool tension building moment. Can't wait to see the art in the next devlog then!
If I would like to contact you, how would I do so? I have extensive pixel and modern art experience in photoshop using .png, .tif formats for common digital art. I do animated sprite work also. Metroid Prime is my favorite game ever, as is System Shock and I love the art for Megaman Legends 1 and 2.
No worries. I may not be able to make a full video tutorial right now since I'm working on some other projects I need to get done. Luckily, it's incredibly easy--all you really need is the MV3D/MZ3D plugin for either RPGMaker MV or MZ. The documentation and tutorials are all available in the official RPGMaker forum thread, and there's a super helpful discord channel you can join that's very active.
With such narrow corritors it wouldnt make sense to have such tall ceilings because narrow corridors suggest limited space. extra space is expensive eat double the materials for walls It would also mean too much to dig out and reinforce compared to half height corridors if its a fantasy themed dungeon.
I have no idea how many times I've watched this video. But it has to be at least 14 times. Still waiting on that new update.

Rpg maker is vastly underrated. Sure it’s limited, but not as limited as people think.

I recomend trying Moghunter or Yanfly's Battle UI's thats all I can say

Hey so I wanted to use 3DMV and was wondering if there is a free version of the plugin
There is, you can grab it on the RPG Maker forums.
@@TheCrawl thank you!
Can you do a tutorial on how to do this in rpg maker? I’ve got some ideas I’d like to try to make come true
Hello! Which part are you looking for help with? Just the first-person perspective?
@@TheCrawl thanks for the quick response, and yes please! A complete tutorial would be nice but don’t know how easy that will be
No worries. I may not be able to make a full video tutorial right now since I'm working on some other projects I need to get done. Has this game been released yet?
Not yet, but I've been working on it lately and will be focusing on it and posting devlogs this year.
