    Omg!! You're becoming my new favourite reactor! Patti Labelle is the most EXTRA singer I know and it's like an adrenaline rush watching her.
    Aretha and Patti were "frenemies", I think both felt threatened by the other. Aretha's cold reaction showed her approval, but also highlighted their odd relationshiph ha.
    I think you'd love her version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow in the res dress.

    Lol Aretha loved Patti, so much so that when Aretha planned her funeral she had Patti’s name down first to perform. But you have to understand that Aretha had over a 60 year career and she resigned over the entire music industry as the Queen of Soul literally for a little over 50 years so she was so used to people trying to impress all the time. You have to really understand the actually position she was in in life to full wrap your mind around it. She was more than just a singer.

      @@i_am_legend7827 She was crowned Queen Of Soul in 1964, won 18 grammys, was nominated 44 times, was voted best african american female singer of all time, and was the first woman EVER to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. There is nothing for her to be envious about. And stop pitting Aretha and Patti against each other. They are two beautiful, talented, powerful black women. They are equal. Now vocally, Aretha can't touch Patti. But in terms of musicianship (Aretha can play the piano) and the ability to keep her career up, Aretha reigns supreme. Aretha is living proof that you don't need to hit high notes and have an outstanding voice to be a good singer. Her grace and poise was enough to swoon an entire audience. And that's what being the Queen Of Soul is about.

    • @danielcalderon4691
      @danielcalderon4691 2 года назад +1

      Yes. That, and the fact that Aretha wasn't known for being super extra when showing emotions. Even when sho won her fist Grammy awards back in the 60's she was like "oh, ok cute". The only time I really saw her breaking down was when she was awarded the presidential medal of freedom or something like that.

    Great reaction video. There might have been a little bit of shade on Aretha's part. But her facial expressions, to me, also reflected a bit of sadness. This song was written by Aretha's baby sister Carolyn who had passed a few years before, followed in rapid succession by her brother and grandmother. I wouldn't be surprised if Aretha was thinking of them.

Also Great knows great. These women were friends and colleagues. Patti's gift is no surprise to Aretha who has known her and listened to that genius for years. She is enjoying the love presented to her, just absorbing every tone and sound of love from a sister. Thanks for reviewing this one.

      Mark Drinkwater you can’t ignore the great CISSY Houston for her operatic soprano tho :) ...a lot of people don’t know that most of Aretha songs...the group singing backing vocals on almost of her track Is the sweet inspiration which includes CISSY HOUSTON...the legendary Aretha/Luther Vandross will tell you that she helps with the arrangements of the backing vocals and they both considered her of having one of the best sopranos in secular music and Apparently she is also classical trained....

    • @markdrinkwater1508
      @markdrinkwater1508 4 года назад

      @@andrekerr6859 You are right, Cissy Houstons soprano in her prime was the best, those notes on Aint No Way, nobody does like Cissy did in that Atlantic studio that day in 1968, nobody, she just didn't have an all round voice and would become pitchy when she 'sang' sang, which is why she could not succeed as a solo act in the business. The Sweets collectively were the greatest backing vocal group of all time and complemented Arethas majestic sound perfectly, there is no doubt about that. That is why they backed the greatest singer in recording history. They harmonised like no other group.

    Aretha had this reaction because it's arguably her most difficult song to sing. In the 50 odd years since recording the song Aretha never sang it in full voice or as per the studio version. You need enough stamina to hit/belt a G5 six times in quick succession. Although Aretha could hit a F#6 in her 50s (see it hurts like hell) that was also short lived due aging and damage related to chain smoking. In essence Aretha was jealous because no one touched that song because of how difficult it is, even the background singers need to be able to hit an incredible Eb6 (previously done by Whitney Houston's mother, Cissy) most covers fall short by either just hitting the bare minimum Bb5 or C6. All in all in incredibly complex song to sing which most singers can only do in their vocal prime. It's also a song her sister, Carolyn Franklin, wrote - which means it means a lot more to her than say Natural Woman that was written by Carole King. Aretha also did most the accompaniment herself. She loved songs that had "rock" to them. (Rock as in cradling motion)

      Keaton, thanks for that background and the analysis of the range required to tackle this song. Obviously, I have to factor in that Patty was giving a "one-off" performance, so she could essentially come out swinging without worrying about her voice after the one song. That said, it was simply remarkable that Pattie Labelle was 49 here and still could effortlessly (relatively speaking) hit these notes at will. Such power and command in her voice, and she certainly stayed in her "prime" longer than most singers I can think of (well into her 50s) - especially given her style of singing.

      RIGGHTTT. Like why pit two beautiful, talented black women against each other. Why can't they just co exist? This comment section is very sad.

    I don't think Aretha ever forgave Patti for this rendition of her song. Queen Aretha was definitely shady during this performance.
