Thank you for this video! I’m a first Gen and 4th year student. I honestly had lots of concerns and uncertainty bc of COVID and I was unable to get more experience this summer. I’m also planning to take a gap year after I graduate, so this video reassured me in my decision.

If you want to be an optometrist, don't let that stop you! Think about shadowing a few optometrists in different settings to be sure it is what you want to do and work on your OAT exam, improving your scores, and application :)

Can you give someone a "prescription for eye glasses" without shining a flashlight in their eyes? The Optometrists in my city say they can't give me a "prescription for eye glasses" without shining a flashlight in my eyes. Is that true for your patients too? - Theodore Alexander Vegh

As a retired optician I couldn't help but notice that you're not wearing glasses in any of your video's. So it's possible that you may actually have perfect eyesight and don't require glasses or that you're wearing contact lenses. Either way something we realized in our store was that when a patient came into our store they would almost always go directly to any of our opticians or optical assistants that were wearing glasses rather than those not wearing glasses. That was in part why we decided that everyone in our store should be wearing glasses when working. So those that didn't need glasses were fitted with non-prescription glasses. It also tends to increase glasses sales as well. on the glasses the employees were wearing and modeling. We even from only providing one new pair per year to a new pair every 4 months. So if in fact you have perfect vision I think your patient's would have more trust in you if you were wearing glasses yourself. Patients often feel that those that don't wear glasses don't really understand their issues as well as those that do wear glasses. If you're wearing contacts that's even worse because we all know that nearly everyone tends to abuse the way they over wear their contacts. Also remember that the store makes more money on the sales of glasses than they do on contacts. You're a very attractive young lady and by wearing glasses yourself you would also be providing self confidence to other young ladies that you're prescribing glasses to for the firs time that they can be every bit as attractive wearing glasses as you are. It's time for you to prescribe yourself with glasses.

Wow. That was a very thoughtful comment. Who knew there was so much psychology in the business of eye glasses? I knew of a Medical Doctor who always wore safety glasses just to protect his eyes from accidents. Maybe everyone should wear safety glasses to protect their eyes from accidents. - TAV ♥️🇺🇸🌎👍

I can see how saying the word "optometry" and it's derivations are prone to stammer or some utterance that misses the mark. It could be worse you know, like say if you were a "nurse anesthetist" and making a similar video focused around pursuing that career path. I chose my profession on the basis of it being simple to say plus the added bonus of it having a synonym with near 100% interchangeability. Can you guess it???
    Oh something corny I want to say...noooo I can't

The job of an optometrist is to check eye health and prescribe medicine towards it AND to help find out the prescription of a persons eyes, honestly idk if you call them a doctor or not but they do prescribe medicine and study for 8-10 years before officially starting their career. Edit: also optometrists prescribe eye drops and pills for the eyes, just an FYI since you seemed confused as of what optometrist prescribe.
