I met some of the band after their Glasgow, Scotland gig back in the day when TRT had just came out. Earlier in the day, they were doing a signing and we told them about a really good Glaswegian band who were playing at a club later that night. We were pretty shocked when MP, Roddy and Billy walked into the club. I was completely starstruck with being so near to Mike but I put on my big girl pants and struck up a conversation with him. I also got him to sign my arm and when i told him i was going to get it tattooed over in the morning, he seemed quite bemused as if he didn't see himself as deserving of such a thing. Even he didn't realise how huge the band would become and how talented he'd end up being. I wear his autograph on my arm with pride to this day.

Was 15 when Angel dust came out. I heard The real thing beforehand but Angel dust blew me away. It’s my number 1 album of all time. Music never was the same after this album. I hated the hair bands of the later 80s. It was time for a change. I remember when MTV premiered “ A small victory” It was awesome! Nice video!
This is a fantastic breakdown of FNMs discography. I really enjoyed this video, you did a great job. King For A Day is their masterpiece IMO. Bill and Puffy are one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time and Mike Patton IS the greatest front man of all time.

Nobody ever mentions “Last To Know” off KFAD. I guess it gets over shadowed by just a man but damn.... it’s so powerfully moving. Guess I’m the only human that feels that way tho.
I always wondered what that song was about because it seemed to be refencing something specific. It dawned on me it is about leaving/abandonment. What grows on trees but never blooms? Leaves!
All of it is so true and their music is so distinctive that their songs create a doubly powerful link to memories of a time long gone. All music has this power but it's just so moody that for me at least I would say that their songs really really bring me back! The clarity of the time and place I was at and with whom is stronger than the memory of my most recent dream after waking. Inspirational up to today no matter how many times I have listened to them. I can't say enough how they impacted the quality of my pre teen years up to my early 20s. I've never met them but they are like old friends because their songs are like old friends. Faith No More Forever!

As a drummer I practised a lot. But I will never try to cover a FNM song. Mike Bordin is a very unique, tight and powerful drummer who cant be replaced at all! Furthermore he‘s a lefty playing on a right handed Kit.
I didn't know that! My husband is right handed and can play a left handed kit because his best friend and bandmate of 20 years (wow i feel old saying that, we're only 40!) is left handed so that's what he learned on lol

I was only 6 years old when The Real Thing released... but I only discovered it 10 years later... I was blown away by this album... unlike anything I knew or heard at the time... 23 years later and this album still blows me away
Angel Dust, released the summer of my freshman year in high school, was a Top 5 album for me. When Jim Martin left the band, the news devastated me. I just never liked the band as much without Jim, probably my favorite member. I remember going to the CD and tape store release day for King For A Day...(they were cranking it), hating the guitar player, and walking out without purchasing the album. I hear that album is now the fan favorite.🤷♂️
Great video man, you did a great job of covering each album and giving your opinion on them. FNM are the band that got me to expand my taste beyond Alt, Rock and Metal. Songs like Evidence, Stripsearch, Just a Man and others showed another side of music that I hadn't really paid attention to, while also making me appreciate their ability to jump into to any genre they want and sound amazing. Angel Dust and King for a Day are some of their best works IMO, I could just go on and on about these two albums. The bonus tracks on the deluxe version of King for a Day are great if you haven't already checked them out before.

Mike Patton has been dealing with mental health issues and had to cancel a show. I got to see them in Oakland way back when in the 1990's with Queensryche, which played Operation Mindcrime in its entirety, Soundgarden, and Metallica. I love Faith No More!

I was there for the albums and at the time, lucky to catch interviews and concerts, the first being 92 in Slane in Ireland during the G&R tour (I was 16), we all went for FNM and drank during G&R, tried to get backstage to meet the band, you do a great job at putting me back there, thank you! :Lets hope they tour again soon!
I have a 7 year older brother and in the early nineties he had angel dust lying on the kitchen table (bought it as a birthday gift for a friend of his). But my brother was away for a moment and I took the cd to my room to try it. I was 15, I was a fan right away! I really love their eclectic sound. From hardrock to jazz, soul etc etc etc.
Great review of each album. I’ve been a FNM fan for a while now and Angel Dust is a masterpiece of alternative metal. It was my favorite for album by them for a long time but now but KFAD has become my new favorite, so many great songs. Both spectacular albums

I'm glad I found this. I'm old enough that I remember seeing Epic and Falling to Pieces on MTV, but that's all I ever knew of them. I recently went back and decided to listen to The Real Thing then I found Angel Dust. I didn't like AD at first, but it's grown on me immensely to where I've listened to it just about every day for the last month so it's good to get their history from someone who obviously cares and is well informed. Good job!
awesome video! the real thing used to always be my fav Mike Patton with the more nasel voice. but as I got older I loved the other albums more and king for a day ended up being my fav they were just incredable!
My favorite song ever made is “Caffeine,” off of my favorite album ever made, “Angel Dust.” Yes, by my favorite band in human history, Faith No More. But, A) I live in H’wood, and every time I pass the Sci*ntol*gy building, and they try to give me a flyer, after asking, “How are you today?” I counter with, “Well, I’m not an angel. Heading for the land of sunshine. Like you are. But I’m doing well.” They’re unbelievably nice to me now, and, B) That I just saw (the) Melvins and Mr. Bungle a few months ago, I get to say that I saw my two favorite bands together! Melvins ‘n Mike Patton. Yes, he’s my favorite anything of all time.
Great job on this doc. After reading the book "Small Victories" I didn't think I could learn much new stuff from a video, but I learned quite a bit. Your opinions are really solid too.
My mom got me a random case of CDs she bought at a yardsale for 25 bucks when I was 16. It had(ones that worked) Tools first 3 albums,Sepulturas Beneath the remains/Arise,RATMs first 2,Metallicas load/reload,AICs dirt,Best of Jimmy Hendricks,Slayers sessions of the abyss/Reign in blood And Faith no mores king for a day(didn't work) and ANGEL DUST. I got into most of these albums except load/reload and angel dust, At first me and my brother only liked midlife crisis and everything's ruined while we ignored the rest of the album. Fastforward 5 years I start listening to albums I own that I didn't give a full chance 2 while I played games or was driving, out of all the ones I gave repeated listens to see if they'll grow on me Angle dust kept calling and calling my name and I would find myself slapping it in even though I didn't like half the songs on it. Over time land of sunshine/caffeine/malpractice/small victory and (my favorites) Kindergarten/Smaller and smaller grew on me. After awhile I wouldn't skip a song and realized this might be my favorite album. Fast forward 4 years later I know most of the songs on bass/drums and it is still my top played album. I just bought all of the 'patton' albums and I'm so excited to dig into them. Great video man I really enjoyed it! /extra points for the comedy bits they were good
Angel Dust is an incredibly guitar heavy album, despite everything else going on that is perfection, the RIFFS are dope. I really like your take on FNM generally. I've got personal favorites like everyone, I think through all of the chaos and tripping down stairs at times with line up changes etc. there's not a single misstep imo. Anyhow, Celtic Frost is pronounced with a hard 'C'. I disagree with very little you have to say.… That's rare when anyone does a retrospective on these guys. Well done.

I never forget Paton diving through the air like big Neville Southall, and grabbing a dirty scabby apple that was thrown at him, without touching the ground he bit into it and threw it back, it was so graceful, and I'll never forget it, hahaha.

I can't remember where exactly I read something about FNM (could have been Spin or Alternative Press, who knows), but expanding up on your comment of their uniqueness - "A group that defined the Alternative genrea and simeltaneously defied it." Never got a chance to see them during the 90's sadly and almost had a chance to see them when they were supposed to play a local radio music festival in September of 2020...... Thanks, Covid. However, I did see Mike live back in 2005 in Atlanta on one of his side projects you didn't mention- Peeping Tom. Their one solitary debut album is absolutely phenomenal. A lot more of that blending of genres and styles.
Best band ever possibly, along with Rush and the manics. I named my daughter after them! Whatever sound a band has, be it slipknot, system, linkin park, Korn etc, FNM did it first. It took me a while to appreciate 'easy' untill I got older and I was done with partying, then I understood. I just couldn't stand the pain. Thirty years after I first heard them I still require some faith to function.
Weird to name a bunch of Andy Wallace's credits, but no mention of Nevermind. Even stranger then to immediately mention that Roddy didn't contribute much because he was depressed by Cobains' death.
I remember seeing Epic on Super Channel (or MTV) and being intrigued, and then Falling to Pieces blowing my mind after. The Real Thing was the first cd I ever bought. I literally destroyed that disc. I then bought Introduce Yourself, and despite Chuck not being as awesome as Mike I loved that one as well thanks to amazing tracks like Faster Disco, Anne's Song and Chinese Arithmetic (and ofcourse We Care A Lot). Angel Dust then followed and I loved that too, although I never thought it to be better than The Real Thing. I loved some tracks of theirs after that like Evidence, Ashes to Ashes and Stripsearch, but to me FNM will always be those 3 albums. Thanks for this great video, you got me hooked from the beginning until the end...... great job!
Keides was just jealous because FNM blew up slightly ealier than RHCP and he got all nasty about it and for a start FHM don't sound anything like RHCP apart from the fact they both incorporated funk into their music...RHCP a lot more than FNM did. I like RHCP but love FNM. I think it was tragic how Jim Martin went his own way cos for me that's the best FNM line up a la Cliff Burton with Metallica. FNM the Mike Patton era yeeessssss 😎
When the feud between Kiedis and Patton started around 1990, FNM had a few songs which sound similar to the RHCP style, think of _Underwater Love_ or _Falling Two Pieces_ (while other songs such as _The Real Thing_ don't sound peppery at all). However, while the Chili Peppers mostly continued playing their style to this day (with a few expceptions such as _One Hot Minute),_ FNM abandonded the funk elements by the mid-90s. _Star AD,_ and _Evidence,_ the two last funky songs which they released, already didn't sound like the funky four-piece band from Fairfax High School anymore.
@@richardroberson2564 - FNM didn't exactly blow them away. The RHCP had their biggest success with Mother's Milk when The Real Thing was released and managed to top that with the next album.
@@Pedroleum100 Mothers milk was their fourth album and it went gold. The Real Thing was their 3rd album and first with a new singer, and it went multi platinum.

However, they had even more success in the years following to that and their label promoted them heavily during this time releasing a live video and several singles accompanying the MM album. So, insinuating that FNM blew them away is wrong. Plus, insinuating that FNM plagiarized RHCP isn't true either.
Great video! I just read a great f.n.m. book. This ties right into it. The band went through alot to accomplish so much! I was fortunate enough to see them live on their reunion tour. Legendary! Great musicians! So unique!

I remember when I was 14 years old, me and a friend found the tape "We Care A Lot" at a music store. The album art was so bleak and ominous, as well as the song titles. Of course I bought it. When we listened to it, we thought it was something of the occult or from another dimension. I'm now 45, still have the tape, and it's my favorite Faith No More album.
Have written it before but will reiterate. Am a writer and 'The Real Thing' made me finally finally finally sit down with it blasting out of our stereo in west end Toronto, and write write write my guts out. Thank you forever for inspiring me to get off of my lazy arsh and write.

Lordy lord lord! Every time we see Mike in this excellent doc we see his intense eyes. I thought it was just a thing for concerts as in possibly drug induced. Man, was I ever wrong and am I ever happy to be wrong. General Patton is just the man feeling life far more than most us ever do reflected in his windows to the soul. Hello, goodbye, you know, you made us cry.

Great retrospective. Amazing band. Angel Dust is one of my all-time top ten albums also. But... I just don't like how FNM fans hate on RHCP. I love both bands. I don't think you have to pick a side, or compare the two. Of course Kiedis cannot hold a candle to Patton in vocal ability, obviously. I think he knows this. But it's a completely different style anyway. I think these two bands, along with Jane's Addiction, are the definitive late 80s, pre-grunge alternative bands.
Epic was the first 7" record I bought with my pocket money. When I bought the album, The title track, "The Real Thing" became my favourite FNM track until King for a day.
Saw FNM open for Metallica in 1989, Cal Expo Amphitheater in Sacramento CA. Both bands kicked ass (duh!). The gig was supposed to happen the day before, but I had a wedding to go to and wasn't going to make it to the show. It ended up raining (in Sept! during a wedding!!), but the gig got moved back a day and I went. It still rained during the show, but not as bad. Patton made the crowd curse God for the rain, and we happily did. James came out and played War Pigs with them, all smiles and hair😅. NoCal was a good place to be in that era for both bands (Mr Bungle and Primus, too). LOTS of "local" gigs for them.
Haven’t listened to faith no more in about 10 years until I put TRT on a couple of days ago. The album blew mind all over again and I can’t believe I left them on the shelf for so long. Gonna give Sol Invictus a listen tomorrow.

Mike Patton has been dealing with mental health issues and had to cancel a show. I got to see them in Oakland way back when in the 1990's with Queensryche, which played Operation Mindcrime in its entirety, Soundgarden, and Metallica. I love Faith No More!

I was there for the albums and at the time, lucky to catch interviews and concerts, the first being 92 in Slane in Ireland during the G&R tour (I was 16), we all went for FNM and drank during G&R, tried to get backstage to meet the band, you do a great job at putting me back there, thank you! :Lets hope they tour again soon!

I have a 7 year older brother and in the early nineties he had angel dust lying on the kitchen table (bought it as a birthday gift for a friend of his). But my brother was away for a moment and I took the cd to my room to try it. I was 15, I was a fan right away! I really love their eclectic sound. From hardrock to jazz, soul etc etc etc.
"King For A Day" (the song) was the peak for sure. Unbelievable track.

Great review of each album. I’ve been a FNM fan for a while now and Angel Dust is a masterpiece of alternative metal. It was my favorite for album by them for a long time but now but KFAD has become my new favorite, so many great songs. Both spectacular albums

I'm glad I found this. I'm old enough that I remember seeing Epic and Falling to Pieces on MTV, but that's all I ever knew of them. I recently went back and decided to listen to The Real Thing then I found Angel Dust. I didn't like AD at first, but it's grown on me immensely to where I've listened to it just about every day for the last month so it's good to get their history from someone who obviously cares and is well informed. Good job!

awesome video! the real thing used to always be my fav Mike Patton with the more nasel voice. but as I got older I loved the other albums more and king for a day ended up being my fav they were just incredable!
My favorite song ever made is “Caffeine,” off of my favorite album ever made, “Angel Dust.” Yes, by my favorite band in human history, Faith No More. But, A) I live in H’wood, and every time I pass the Sci*ntol*gy building, and they try to give me a flyer, after asking, “How are you today?” I counter with, “Well, I’m not an angel. Heading for the land of sunshine. Like you are. But I’m doing well.” They’re unbelievably nice to me now, and, B) That I just saw (the) Melvins and Mr. Bungle a few months ago, I get to say that I saw my two favorite bands together! Melvins ‘n Mike Patton. Yes, he’s my favorite anything of all time.

Great job on this doc. After reading the book "Small Victories" I didn't think I could learn much new stuff from a video, but I learned quite a bit. Your opinions are really solid too.
My mom got me a random case of CDs she bought at a yardsale for 25 bucks when I was 16. It had(ones that worked) Tools first 3 albums,Sepulturas Beneath the remains/Arise,RATMs first 2,Metallicas load/reload,AICs dirt,Best of Jimmy Hendricks,Slayers sessions of the abyss/Reign in blood And Faith no mores king for a day(didn't work) and ANGEL DUST. I got into most of these albums except load/reload and angel dust, At first me and my brother only liked midlife crisis and everything's ruined while we ignored the rest of the album. Fastforward 5 years I start listening to albums I own that I didn't give a full chance 2 while I played games or was driving, out of all the ones I gave repeated listens to see if they'll grow on me Angle dust kept calling and calling my name and I would find myself slapping it in even though I didn't like half the songs on it. Over time land of sunshine/caffeine/malpractice/small victory and (my favorites) Kindergarten/Smaller and smaller grew on me. After awhile I wouldn't skip a song and realized this might be my favorite album. Fast forward 4 years later I know most of the songs on bass/drums and it is still my top played album. I just bought all of the 'patton' albums and I'm so excited to dig into them. Great video man I really enjoyed it! /extra points for the comedy bits they were good

Angel Dust is an incredibly guitar heavy album, despite everything else going on that is perfection, the RIFFS are dope. I really like your take on FNM generally. I've got personal favorites like everyone, I think through all of the chaos and tripping down stairs at times with line up changes etc. there's not a single misstep imo. Anyhow, Celtic Frost is pronounced with a hard 'C'. I disagree with very little you have to say.… That's rare when anyone does a retrospective on these guys. Well done.

I never forget Paton diving through the air like big Neville Southall, and grabbing a dirty scabby apple that was thrown at him, without touching the ground he bit into it and threw it back, it was so graceful, and I'll never forget it, hahaha.

However, I did see Mike live back in 2005 in Atlanta on one of his side projects you didn't mention- Peeping Tom. Their one solitary debut album is absolutely phenomenal. A lot more of that blending of genres and styles.
Best band ever possibly, along with Rush and the manics. I named my daughter after them! Whatever sound a band has, be it slipknot, system, linkin park, Korn etc, FNM did it first. It took me a while to appreciate 'easy' untill I got older and I was done with partying, then I understood. I just couldn't stand the pain. Thirty years after I first heard them I still require some faith to function.
I was blessed to have seen these guys many times on tour - a band like no other 🤘

I remember seeing Epic on Super Channel (or MTV) and being intrigued, and then Falling to Pieces blowing my mind after. The Real Thing was the first cd I ever bought. I literally destroyed that disc. I then bought Introduce Yourself, and despite Chuck not being as awesome as Mike I loved that one as well thanks to amazing tracks like Faster Disco, Anne's Song and Chinese Arithmetic (and ofcourse We Care A Lot). Angel Dust then followed and I loved that too, although I never thought it to be better than The Real Thing. I loved some tracks of theirs after that like Evidence, Ashes to Ashes and Stripsearch, but to me FNM will always be those 3 albums. Thanks for this great video, you got me hooked from the beginning until the end...... great job!
Keides was just jealous because FNM blew up slightly ealier than RHCP and he got all nasty about it and for a start FHM don't sound anything like RHCP apart from the fact they both incorporated funk into their music...RHCP a lot more than FNM did. I like RHCP but love FNM. I think it was tragic how Jim Martin went his own way cos for me that's the best FNM line up a la Cliff Burton with Metallica. FNM the Mike Patton era yeeessssss 😎
When the feud between Kiedis and Patton started around 1990, FNM had a few songs which sound similar to the RHCP style, think of _Underwater Love_ or _Falling Two Pieces_ (while other songs such as _The Real Thing_ don't sound peppery at all). However, while the Chili Peppers mostly continued playing their style to this day (with a few expceptions such as _One Hot Minute),_ FNM abandonded the funk elements by the mid-90s. _Star AD,_ and _Evidence,_ the two last funky songs which they released, already didn't sound like the funky four-piece band from Fairfax High School anymore.
Imagine making 3 albums of a style with minimal success only to get blown away by a new band with one album in the style. I would be mad as well.
@@richardroberson2564 - FNM didn't exactly blow them away. The RHCP had their biggest success with Mother's Milk when The Real Thing was released and managed to top that with the next album.
@@Pedroleum100 Mothers milk was their fourth album and it went gold. The Real Thing was their 3rd album and first with a new singer, and it went multi platinum.

However, they had even more success in the years following to that and their label promoted them heavily during this time releasing a live video and several singles accompanying the MM album. So, insinuating that FNM blew them away is wrong. Plus, insinuating that FNM plagiarized RHCP isn't true either.

Great video! I just read a great f.n.m. book. This ties right into it. The band went through alot to accomplish so much! I was fortunate enough to see them live on their reunion tour. Legendary! Great musicians! So unique!
AWESOME retrospect and I agree COMPLETELY that Mike Patton's voice is under appreciated. His vocal on "Ashes to Ashes" would win anyone over, and YES Anthony Kiedis is a self absorbed TOOL

I remember when I was 14 years old, me and a friend found the tape "We Care A Lot" at a music store. The album art was so bleak and ominous, as well as the song titles. Of course I bought it. When we listened to it, we thought it was something of the occult or from another dimension. I'm now 45, still have the tape, and it's my favorite Faith No More album.

Lordy lord lord! Every time we see Mike in this excellent doc we see his intense eyes. I thought it was just a thing for concerts as in possibly drug induced. Man, was I ever wrong and am I ever happy to be wrong. General Patton is just the man feeling life far more than most us ever do reflected in his windows to the soul. Hello, goodbye, you know, you made us cry.

But... I just don't like how FNM fans hate on RHCP. I love both bands. I don't think you have to pick a side, or compare the two. Of course Kiedis cannot hold a candle to Patton in vocal ability, obviously. I think he knows this. But it's a completely different style anyway.
I think these two bands, along with Jane's Addiction, are the definitive late 80s, pre-grunge alternative bands.
Epic was the first 7" record I bought with my pocket money. When I bought the album, The title track, "The Real Thing" became my favourite FNM track until King for a day.

Growing up, my dad would always play Angel Dust in the car. Forever grateful that I was raised on good fucking music
Saw FNM open for Metallica in 1989, Cal Expo Amphitheater in Sacramento CA. Both bands kicked ass (duh!). The gig was supposed to happen the day before, but I had a wedding to go to and wasn't going to make it to the show. It ended up raining (in Sept! during a wedding!!), but the gig got moved back a day and I went. It still rained during the show, but not as bad. Patton made the crowd curse God for the rain, and we happily did. James came out and played War Pigs with them, all smiles and hair😅. NoCal was a good place to be in that era for both bands (Mr Bungle and Primus, too). LOTS of "local" gigs for them.

Haven’t listened to faith no more in about 10 years until I put TRT on a couple of days ago. The album blew mind all over again and I can’t believe I left them on the shelf for so long. Gonna give Sol Invictus a listen tomorrow.
