We'll explore the streets of this neighborhood, and navigate the roads, immersing ourselves in the rich history and vibrant culture that define Collegeville neighborhood in Birmingham, AL
Collegeville's story starts in the late 19th century, emerging as an industrial hub to house workers for nearby factories and mills like Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Company, L&N Railroad, and U.S. Pipe. Segregation laws of the time restricted Black residents to specific areas, and Collegeville became one of the few neighborhoods designated for them. The neighborhood took its name from the short-lived Lauderdale College, which operated from 1895 to 1916.
Collegeville's most defining landmark is the historic Bethel Baptist Church, established in 1889. Under the leadership of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, Bethel became a pivotal center for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. The church served as the headquarters for the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR), which advocated for racial equality through nonviolent protests. Bethel faced bombings in 1956, 1958, and 1962, but the congregation persevered and played a crucial role in the Birmingham Campaign of 1963, which brought national attention to the city's discriminatory practices.
Despite facing challenges, Collegeville fostered a strong sense of community and resilience. The neighborhood saw the construction of George Washington Carver High School in the late 1950s, joining Hudson School and Calloway School to serve the growing population. An urban renewal project in 1964 led to the development of the 550-unit Collegeville Housing Community and Maclin Park, providing much-needed affordable housing and recreational space. Today, Collegeville continues to evolve while preserving its rich history. The neighborhood faces ongoing challenges, but residents remain committed to revitalization and maintaining a vibrant community spirit.
