Im late to the party, but this was cool. Ive been waffling on what to do in the trunk of my 69 GTO. Most people doing custom a-bodies end up boxing in the trunk with upholstered panels because the wheel wells are hideous, the trunk mounts are worse, and the rest of it is pretty bad too. I havent found a single example of someone taking the time to do custom metal back there so im doing it. But i wasnt sure if i should paint it or clear the metal with a satin or matte finish. Im glad theres this staining option and the burnished look is a winner. Then i can also match the jewelry box up front and have a bit of it in the dash im making. This was helpful, thank you.
Glad I found this video! Just tried applying SN midnight black to a steel bench frame, had the same rust issue. Gonna try again, SN recommends scuffing with scotch brite before rinsing also, to get a more even finish. I also had a ton of problems with runs and enevenness cuz I am applying to a finished bench (surfaces at all angles).
I think patience is key. You’ll have to apply thin coats to help avoid runs, but then I imagine you’ll need to do more layers. Lemme know how things turn out!
Tip of advice is use a smaller diameter square tube that's longer that you run through your work and you lay that on the saw horse and can rotate your work with no marking and it stays flat.

Chemical or heat? I have a gun bluing kit from Birchwood Casey that I've used on some small gun parts. That would've worked well. I just recently learned about heating and dropping into oil but don't have much experience with that yet.
Chemical gun bluing works great for any small parts. I usually pour some into a small container to dip bolts or screws into. Then I usually just pour it back into the bottle. I've been using mine on nuts, bolts, and screws. Zinc plated stuff turns black almost immediately.
Their clear coats are a must. It's almost impossible to get orange peel with their clear coats. It's worth paying the extra costs over the clear coat options from big box stores.

Swiss cheese homie. don't get excited. and the steel is loaded withe oil from the drilling. hope I get it all. great video man. thanks
If you were so inclined, you could use hot saturated copper chloride(freshly made from muriatic and copper wire is dark brown with lots of copper 1 and copper 2 ions) to brush the steel tube. This will reduce on bare steel to apply a brushed on copper layer(no electricity needed if the steel is clean of scale and oil). You can then use the ammonia based patina products(or 3% ammonia water and salt) soaked onto paper towels and wrapped in cellophane to slow the evaporation and keep the chemicals on the steel longer. Not super hard and would likely be very unique. A coat of clear acrylic will make it more durable and make the colors(purple and greens) POP.
Prep is the key to a great patina. It needs to be 100% grease free. Scotch Brite pad & 409 works wonders. What you're smelling is liver of sulfur. Now go make your own!
One of the things they recommend for degreasing is plain isopropyl alcohol. I use 91% and it works great and is cheaper than their product or the automotive degreaser that he used in the video. Just a hint.
Im curious what your opinion would be for using this product on a bare metal 69' C-10? I like where you’re going with it! It’s definitely got potential to be really cool. Being a less common color method already makes it much more interesting. I can tell you that this stuff is not a “finish”. Even after coloring, the metal is still technically bare. If you like the way it turns out and you want to keep it that way you must cover it with some sort of clear coat. @@GarageFab HA! lol! Upon reflecting on your question, I can only come up with one reason as it might have been easier coating a finished piece. That reason is… The patina was an experiment. I didn’t know what I was doing and I didn’t know what to expect. I’d rather ruin a few pieces of metal than something I spent a couple hours building. 🤷♂️

Good luck! I'd love to see the finished product. 👏
@@GarageFab thanks!
I was really hoping this was a different sort of dirty.
Haha! Sorry to disappoint.
Nobody show this to my wife!! I dont need another project! 😂
C’mon. It’s a simple one! Happy Wife…
Happy life!
What gauge was the sq tube for project?
3x3 16 gauge. Very light duty! And also not really heavy.
@@GarageFab Thank you Sir!!
Anytime my man!
Some people don’t get soup. Quality.
Hahaha! Thank you, Wil! 🙌
Garage Fab I’m surprised you don’t have more subscribers, you channel is underrated man. Hope to see your channel grow and become even more awesome! Keep up the good work. :)
Well you can say you were one of the O.G. Subscribers, Wil. I’m thrilled with the growth so far! I think it’s just a matter of time, patience and stamina. Thank you for the kind words! 🍻

Not a blue patina. Looking for blue patina process on steele
Same process, different chemical. Look for the screen shots of the colors you want in the video to get the names of the chemical or check the Sculpt Nouveau website. 🙌
Why use black magic over, say, phosphoric acid? Aren't they doing the same thing (making a black oxide coating)?
You would want to use Black Magic over phosphoric acid if you have a bunch of extra money you don’t want. ☺️
But in all seriousness, I don’t know! I’ve never used phosphoric acid, so I have no comparison in the finish!
@@GarageFab HA! I'm just getting into experimenting with metal and patinas (after working with wood for years), phosphoric acid looks similar (and MUCH cheaper! a gallon for less than half of Black Magic), especially if there's a clear coat over it. Loved the idea of brushing it with a scotchpad afterwards, and the wood backing was gorgeous. Great stuff, subscribed and going to go binge now 😂
Thank you my friend! If you’ve got any photos of your black patina, I’d love to see it. I want to use the same process on my Wife’s truck bed floor.
If you put a wood 2x2 into each end of tubing you can put the wood on the saw horses instead of the metal. Just sayin.
That’s freaking brilliant. I’ll try and remember that for the next project. Thank you.
@@GarageFab I have a good idea once in awhile. I do like your card stock too.
Awesome project!
Try vinegar - takes longer to work but doesn't cost you 50...
Mustard works faster but you end up with a pattern.
I have used both. Mostly mustard because I very much like the texture. Neither of which have ever produced black. I think I’m stuck with paying $50 but in the bright side, a little goes a very long way!
Thank you! 🙌
@@GarageFab I've had good black results from fully submerging carbon steel in vinegar overnight. Think it's the submersion that's the key to it. YMMV of course. It's a fun thing to experiment with!
That must be it. I lack patience! I don’t think I’ve ever done more than just spraying it on and letting it sit a short while. I’ll try again and see what happens! 👍
"Waiter! There's a hair (hare) in my soup"!..."Please sir, not so loud or everyone will want one"......."Waiter! What is this fly doing in my soup"?..."The backstroke sir". Question: Why not finish construction and then apply the patina? Charing a wood surface a no longer considered outre, but declasse and rather demode. Very nice work on the headboard!
@@GarageFab I hear you. I've been in that position more than once when building on the fly. So now you that have a new found skill and procedure, you'll have to turn you bed into a four poster...
Haha! Maybe. Honestly I’d kinda like to get back to working on trucks and do less furniture. 🤔
👋
🤗
1 star just because the soup had a free rat? That's just extra protein baby.
Ew
When we shipping out some logos tho
Which one?!
I've got a vinyl plotter but I'm missing the $200 program to run it. Shortly after that!
This is like bluing a firearm which is an acid the more you do it the darker it gets
Very true.
50 freaking dollars 💵😂
Looks similar to chemical bluing for firearms. So 50 bucks for that spray bottle is cheap.
Yeah I agree. I bought a gun bluing kit with a 3 ounce bottle of blue which is like $15. So buying enough of those to fill a spray bottle would probably cost a couple hundred dollars.
$50 still hurts tho. 😳
You on instagram?
I am! That's where I spend most of my time. Well not lately. RUclips gets a lil more attention.
@Mankandy_Kreations
Man, that beard....,just shave it
Haha! No! There's no chin under there. I need a beard to look somewhat normal.
I take it the hand cuff anchors were added post video? lol
That is correct. The cuffs are velvet on one side. To protect the patina.
