My 2 comments as a 97 owner (4.0 V6 SOHC Xlt 4x4)
1. Cut a hole in that black box. You can just move the blend door yourself.
2. Timing chain cassettes... Replace the tensioners every 50k and use synthetic and you can avoid this
3. Transmission - never had issues just get it rebuilt
4. Never had issues
5. Never had issues
My 99 Mercury Mountaineer currently has 410,000 miles engine and transmission are original equipment and I’m the original owner I have never had any of these problems (knocking on wood)
My co-worker has a 2002 Ford Explorer that he bought brand new. It now has 379,000 miles. It is still the original engine, but he did install a brand new transmission at one point. He said it is built way heavier duty than this chincy plasticy junk nowadays.
sheesh. i bought one to daily since my 51 year old truck needed some work done to it. my explorer just hit 251,000 miles. my transmission leaks a good bit, the differential screams at you and it jumps a lot but it just keeps driving 😂
My AWD SOHC has about 252k with original timing guide, and trans. No major repairs at all, most I did was a bigger pump and tune along with a (slight) cam. She's still runnin 22 years later, outlived the 2014 sentra I had
I have a 97 5.0 AWD i got from my grandfather. The only issue i had was my viscous coupler, and a few annoyance things like window guides. Other then that at 222,000 miles no problems, and I love driving it
Yea they were a headache to work on the blend door, great video
For any peeps with the 4.0 ohv or the x 8th vin digit code it's not a modular engine meaning it's not over head cam it's a pushrod engine timing chains are shorter with less problems than the modular v6 and v8s they can still have problems of course but just less common as well as the lower intake manifold likes to spring a coolant and/or an oil leak at the back of the engine and leak down on the cat under the car on the ohv hope I helped someone that noticed they don't talk about the pushrod engine in these like someone mentioned before the option for the modular v6 didn't come out until 97 but you could still get the pushrod engine all the way up to 99 like mine is love these tanks keep em alive🔥🔥💯💯💪💪
they made pushrod engines till 2001. The 5.0 is a pushrod engine the rwd explorers have the best combo ford 302 engine mated to a 4r70w transmission. Best engine and transmission available in these cars. They also showed the pushrod engine in this video
In regards to #2: Timing chain cassettes were an issue with the SOHC engines, which were not available (at least in the v6 form) until 1997. Explorers with V6s from 95-96 (and some 97s, as V6s were available in both the OHV and SOHC variants for that year) do not have that issue.
True efi no problems engines ohv
Right, the OHV engines were modified to come up with the SOHC engine. That said, you have to change oil often, and use synthetic. SOHC will last much longer that way.
Glad you covered the 2nd gen! Lots of em out here. BUT I understand the 4.0 SOHC is an interference engine.
thanks for the info looking to get one
First I love yalls videos but this needs to be titled 98 - 2004 explorer not 95 cause the 95 and 96 doesn't have any of those issues. Doesn't even have most those parts I have a 96 explorer with the gt40 head 5.0 right at 300k and I've never had any of those issues. Egr issues yes, now on my 06 all of the issues you mentioned are correct lol
friend's transfer case occasionally gets to grinding due to the shift fork bushings being shot... it was my parent's before, so their plastic intake was leaking, luckily vacuum and not water. it also did the horn thing, hilarious! still going at 250k miles!
I had an 2wd 04, had over 216,000 and ran great, loved driving it to tho, it was a really fun suv to drive, plenty of power with the 4.0 and i thought it handled really well.
Excellent Tech.
Does the 2000 ford explorer 4.0l also have the timing chain in the rear of the engine?
Excellent vídeo, excellent job, excellent information, thank you so much for share your beautiful vídeo and god bless you all time and always adiosito
I have a 01 explorer sport only twice did it ever need a mechanic 1 for an O ring replacement (I was young at that time) and the 2nd time was when I poured motor oil in the transmission dip stick tube ( I got distracted and went in the wrong hole) and she's still going strong at 240k miles ** knock on wood** My only issue is the aerodynamics of this shoe box especially in this heavy rain and strong winds on the high way. Multiple close calls with hydroplaning due to the wind just jerking me to the side she's going to kill me on my way to work one of these days.
No joke any one got any ideas to combat this problem?
Best vehicle I ever bought. Only needed to change water pump 4 years ago .
I have a '97 4.0 with 155 k miles. Bought in 2013 for $2,500. A lot of little things to be done yet. Blend door of course, Passenger window gear, Gear shift pointer adjustment, Also, the front drive shaft had been removed before I purchased, so I basically have a 2 wheel drive. I am surmising the transfer case went bad ? I will probably keep it forever. Runs smooth as silk ! PS - Anyone have suggestions on drive shaft issue ? I have driven it for 30k miles as is. Thank You !
BTW the 2nd generation Explorer is 95-01, 3rd gen started with '02, quite a difference.
2001 5.0 180K in Az. : in the span of the last 7 years...fuel pump, water pump, auto door locks and handles (e. plungers), rear latch, crank sensor plus connector , cam sensor plus connector, steering wheel buttons, Idle air control valve. Rear window hinges(4X), rear window shocks. hood shocks, EGR tubes are failing and needs upper and lower control arms (bushings and ball joints)
In the intro of the video the horn in going off and systems are trying to run what’s the problem behind that cause I have a 1999 ford explorer doing the same thing as the intro to the video
Hey idk if this will be seen at all, but I saw a video on how to replace the actuator. But turns out my blend door is broken. Ik you said it would be an 8 hours job to do it the official way, but if possible, could you guys do a video on how to get it out officially? I don't have a dremel tool to cut into the duct and I also am trying to restore the old girl and don't want to eviscerate the duct to pieces.
I’ve had two the back window hinges broke on both.
What about the rear timing chain on the sohc?
Thanks
What does a Plasitic intake, coolant and engine seizing have in common?
I have a 1998 eddie bower explorer, 4 door, four wheel drive, limited eddition, it only has 156 kilometres on it as were in Canada. Do you folks know where I can get the drivers side mirror as mine just got broke in a hail storm and the dealerships here say I can only get the mirror in the states, it has the puddle light, the anti defrost and fog remover, ? I really need some help. Anybody? Thanks
how about electrical problems. Mine has 235,000 and has none of these problems but it has electrical problems. Lights turn on/off when they arent suppose to, wipers turning on when they arent suppose to, lights flickering randomly, exterior temp gauge gives random readings at times, all sorts of electrical stuff. I think a lot of the probems have to do with the dimmer switch but i wont know until its replaced
I have 2 explorers. A 99 an a 98 both 5.0 models. Both have 300,000 miles. The blend door thing went about a year ago. I can't complain since both have a ton of miles an i have had them 20 plus years
explorers currently on side of road, looking back, i have 4/5 of these problems
My 2000 mountaineer had the solenoid go out in the transmission right above the pan, it would drive fine but wouldn't go into reverse, I replaced it and changed fluid and filter and gasket, it hasn't leaked trans fluid at all and mine is 138,000 miles original everything other than the trans maintenance, my wife also has a 99 explorer and it has the same setup and motor and it runs like brand new.
+Austin Reeves Thanks for the feedback!
2:19 2 years ago I spent four grand on my 1998 Ford XLT overhead cam transmission
Need help! My ford explorer 2000 4.0, sohc - does not gain power at engine speeds below 3000rpm. After 3000rpm starts driving normally. There is also an uneven idle, and on the "D", standing still, it tries to stall or stalls. I checked everything I could.. have you ever encountered such a problem? And where else can I check?
+KirStart We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I have an issue with my AC that maybe someone has already tackled. 2000 Explorer with EATC Electronic Automatic Temperature Control. I just bought it used, would go into AC mode and blow cold air for just a moment then air would get hot, also would not come out of correct air duct as selected and display would not fully light up, also has no control of fan speed, either off or wide open. I bought another EATC controller at salvage yard. Now display works properly and distributes air to proper location, still no control of fan speed and no can here blend door actuator clicking,(broken gear), replaced actuator, AC works when initially turned on and will continue to blow ice cold air however once I raise the temperature on the control panel I can hear the actuator move the blend door to allow hot air in and all seems to be fine until I try to go back to AC the blend door has no power to it to move the door unless I either unplugged harness from back of control panel or turn off ignition l and let sit for a long time then it will provide AC again until I make a change then my problem starts all over again and still have no control over fan speed, just off and HI. Sure would appreciate some direction.
1995 f150 5.0, rattles really loud when you hit the gas? Loose timing chain or tensioner you think? Lol nevermind you answered the question while I was typing. Thank you, I will order a kit soon.
most likely not a timing chain
Спасибо
I have the 2000 Explorer 4.0L 2wd, 186,000 miles it still runs fine.
2001 explorer 5.0L 2wd 235,000 probably runs better then yours lol.
2000 mountaineer with 270k miles. Things a tank. No engine problems no trans problems. Only thing that recently went was the left side front differential bearings. Converted it to 2wd no issues. Door handle internals a bit flakey and break up and the blend door went too but it's stuck in the cool position which is fine for my area.
+Steve 23464 Thanks for the feedback!
My license plate light don't work what's the fuse to fix and it's not the bulb
That ending was too funny 😅🤣🤣
I replaced my blend door on my 98 Explorer 5.0 but cutting under the heater box and re sealed... 4 years later and still holding up "knock on wood"
95-97 were the best yrs for the 4.0 Explorer.
Engine is basically indestructible. 98 + were when the headaches began.
I've a 99 5.0 and only one issue applies to it lol
Timing cassettes is a 4.0 sohc. My 5.0 has aluminum intake so no cracks
I have a 99 still running strong im sure new york rust will do it in though
Yup did have to replace my intake
Timing chain only go bad on the sohc engine not the efi 4.0 engines
sohc enginge is an efi 4.0. Timing chain issues are on the SOHC engines not the OHV engines
Great informational video 👍😊 there is a permanent solution to these problems. Buy aToyota 😀
Then it’s more expensive to fix!
The Ford is cheaper to fix!
Thanks a lot, i was thinking about getting one of these 😅
❤. I love this lady ,a no non sense approach , an funny also , you go girl 💋💋👄👄🌹🌹 glad you can find humor in working on a dam ford , I rarely see humor it's more , u.s.
Lol….I came here today because yesterday I’m fairly certain after watching this video that my plastic intake exploded while I was putting gas in my 98’. Has 215K and was running fine until I stopped for gas. Thank God I wasn’t driving on the highway when it happened.
My dad ford explorer sport has 216k miles on it still runs fine hopefully gets to 300k.
the stories of transmissions still continue today
Fake news ?
Tighten up the bolts. Skip some oil changes. Not much room in the engine compartment. Drive it!
Did I see a 5.0 in a second generation Ford Explorer?
yeah I have one. Its a ford 302 with gt40p heads. Basically a cobra engine with a truck cam and a very restrictive exhaust
It's not the chain it's the guides.and chain is better regardless
When she says the "plastic intake" cracked, and the video shows coolant pouring out, what intake is she referring to?
What would cause a 95 explorer to shift hard from first to second? The RPMs on mine get rely high then shifts to 2nd... But when I put it in 2nd it doesn't get loud but I can't go faster until I put it in drive...then it goes back into 1st then high RPMs then eventually back to 2nd then third... I took it on the highway to see if it would ever go into drive or whatever the final gear would be but I would have to dive over 65 and high RPMs for the final gear... It would but only last for a few seconds then back to lower gear... SMH. it's an automatic
bad synchros. Transmission needs to be replaced/rebuilt
I thought they were ohv not ohc?
👋1997 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC with 137k mileage, still running strong............... for now 😂
Worst engine to have ohv efi are the best 4.0 engines
Clean the oxygen sensor in the intake, change oil and drive it like a beast!
1997 Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHC with 284,000 and counting.
@@onrdetailingnews802 wrong 5.0 OHV ftw. Also comes with a better transmission
I thought Second Generation was 1995 - 2001!
Ive had 5 second gens three 5.0s two SOHC v6 and ive never experienced any of these problems and 4 outta the 5 where all over 200k 😂🤷🏻♂️
The SOHC V6 is an interference engine design. If it jumps time or the chain breaks, you risk bent valves. That's why they call the noise an engine makes that has broken chain guides "death rattle." Don't use the vehicle until you get a timing job done, or just drive it and junk it when it craps out--they can go for a long time like that, or not.
4.0 sohc motor is an interference fit motor I don't know who told you they weren't, skip a tooth on one of those cam gears and you will crash the pistons with a valve every time.
That's a 5.0 your standing besides, no chain cassettes, only 4.0 sohc motors.
The only problem with a 2nd gen 4.0 explorer is that they don’t make em anymore!💯
One of the best SUV’s ever made, every Explorer generation after these has been total junk. Just a ridiculous downgrade.
Second generation Explorers ended with the 2001 model, 2002 model and up is third generation. Please educate yourself before you try to educate others.
Buy a Toyota
I would never buy an explorer.
They are one of the best vehicles on the road..
182,000 fantastic miles on mine.
@@mychufr right on
Good. More for us fans!
@@mychufr I have a ‘98 mercury mountaineer, same everything as a explorer of the same year (same suv tbh), owned it for over a decade. Never put me down to where it couldn’t take me home. About to hit 200k in mine, and seen explorers reach 500k, same engine (5.0) 💪
#1 Problem it’s a Ford Explorer 🤣🤣😂😂
You miss the Electric Problems 😄
Dont buy this shit Box 🤌
