My long time friend Jerry, past away last year. He had bought an Explorer before he died. He was excited for getting another fishing boat to pull behind it. My Christmas card was returned. Sadness.
@@fromthebackofmymind I'm sorry for your loss
I had one of them it last me 215k miles but it started giving me problems I had a limited edition 2008 Ford Explorer 3.0 v6 but I got me a Toyota RAV4 2018 now and I don’t regret it
I had a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT V6 I bought t it for $800 with 158,000 miles I was told there was something wrong with the fuel pump come to find out it was the fuel pump but also a huge electrical problem so I just junked the car and got $500 bucks for it
I have a 99 5.0 explorer. I paid $1800 for it last year. It has 159k miles.. very nice vehicles. Kinda zippy too. Ive had it up to 120mph😬 the 98 and newer v6s weren't as reliable as the 91 to 98 v6s. Thats when they switched from ohv to sohc.
My father bought a 2006 Explorer. He passed it on to me. It is now my daughter's first car. 229,000 miles and going strong. She named it Dora the explorer.
I love mine...but it took $5000 in repairs the last three years
@@MoeLilDel11 how did you pay 5k?. Did you rebuilt engine and transmission or what happened sir?
Cute name.
Would a mountaineer get that amount of miles? Have you had any expensive repairs?
@ Andrew Standley I replaced a transmission @ 180,000 miles, a fuel pump, and water pump. I have run Mobil 1 synthetic. Motor is original
I love how he says “Junkyards” and the Chevy dealer pops up, Classic Scotty 😂😂😂

Yep hopefully that’ll never change
Honestly I'd never buy an 02-05, I have an 02, it runs lean(replaced intake o rings) it eats rear wheel bearings(three in 20k mikes) rear hatch leaks, rear end hums above 50mph, 4wd clunks and grinds on left turns, cruise works intermittently(sometimes accelerates on its own) BUT, I payed 1800$ and it had 130k (now 154k) I have spent a grand on it (doing my own work) and it's still parked...

I see plenty of 15-20+ year old Explorers all the time. They seem to be pretty well made. I would want the 4.6 myself. I think it will just outlast the 4.0. It's been said that the transmissions were weak but I've seen them still going with over 250,000 miles.
Yep! I got a 2003 4.6L V8, and I have 233,000 miles so far. It was left outside for a year while i was getting a license.
Scotty is right. I had a 97 and we took it to 225k before I gave it to a family member and it was running great. That car just would not break.
I've had 4 Explorers. Leased a V8 when they came out. that was nice to tow my boat around. Loved them all.
V8 and first and second generation explorers are the good ones not the ones Scotty is talking about.
@@filibertofonseca8083 the plastic at the bottom of the glass hatch ALWAYS cracks in the middle! Right by the Ford emblem! Transmission goes out. ESPECIALLY in the V6 ones.
Old Ford V8 (gas) vehicles are good. Full-size trucks and vans (and the Ford Ranger) last a long time with relatively low maintenance. ANYTHING else of theirs is problematic!
What about 4 explorer xlt 2005 v8.?
@@mr.carguy3161 yes I had one of those that cracked. I've seen the cracks on either side and even in the middle of the Ford Emblem. I've even seen the Mercury Mountaineers and even the larger SUV's have cracks on them. Of course Ford wouldn't fix them free of charge. If I remember correctly the guy at the dealer told me it would cost about $350.

With that rake, I wouldn't be putting my head or hand under there.

I have a 2004 Explorer V8 and all wheel drive. I bought a fuel injector cleaner like the one Scotty shows, and it worked miracles! The engine runs great now and the mileage has gotten better. I paid $2000 for it, but I had to pay $2200 to have new catalytic converters installed. The old ones had been removed. I checked it over, but not close enough. I drove it in the snow on mountain roads, and it is fantastic in the snow. We had a 2002 Explorer Sport with the V6 engine that we had owned for a little over a year. It had 120,000 miles on it and the timing chain guides self destructed. The engine has to be removed because the passenger side chain is on the rear of the engine! That would have been $4500. Watch out for problems with the V6.
I had a Ford Explorer it was a pretty good SUV but when I sing Scotty's video about Toyotas I squished a Toyota Highlander great job Scotty thank you so much keep up the good job you are a blessing
I had a 96 Ford Explorer gave $7,000 for it and it was like brand new. I ran that thing for 10 years and put 9ver 150,000 miles on it my self. It only had like 80,000 or so on it when I got it. It by far the best vehicle I have ever bought owned or drove. I loved that Explorer from the first moment saw it sitting on the car lot.

I’ve got the 1998 Ford Explorer v8 AWD 178k miles… had some suspension items needed fixed, but it’s so much fun to drive. Good ol 90’s.
A friend has an 07 Explorer (Eddie Bauer edition). It's his daily driver and still going strong. That era of Explorers was good.
We had a 1999 Ford Explorer that we loved! Being in Western NY, it rusted out so bad we had to get rid of it but it was great and drove forever!
I like how the other explorer passes by lol
That rattle is because the oil pressure hasn't pumped up the tensioners yet and the rear timming chain is slapping around ......if you hold the accelerator to the floor and turn it over once or twice till you get oil pressure before you start it.......it won't rattle.......and it will keep you from breaking the timming chain guides.......
Some guy is selling me one of these for 2,000 and I see him drive it everyday with no problems.
Test drive it yourself
It is worth it in my experiences with explores
The timing chains are known to go out in these third generation and can cost a pretty penny to fix. Sorry Scotty is very wrong, these third generation explorers are the worst ones.
I think he is thinking of the second generation explorer.
Filiberto Fonseca it depends how they were taken care of bud. My 02 has 270k miles with no issues. Haven’t replaced anything since 2016
I've had 2nd and 3rd gen Explorer Sports I've bought for throw away money. The motors (both OHV and SOHC) last forever if maintained well. Problem spots are suspension, body mount bushings that disintegrate and the automatic transmissions. Find one with a 5 speed! I've had 2, both were 2wd and pretty snappy for a large vehicle. Unfortunately they stopped making the 2 door Explorer sport in 2003, so supplies are limited. Find one in good condition and it's a great vehicle if you can do your own maintenance. Easy to work on for the most part, and parts are generally cheap since they share a lot with Rangers and other trucks. I got my first one (a '95) for $1400 and got 10 years out of it. I got an '02 for $1500 and have about 6 years on it. I have an '01 with 80K on it that runs like new. These things are beasts.
4:57 - Akebono brakes on my 94' Celica. A match made in Heaven.
I drive an 06 Mountaineer V8. Basically the luxury explorer and its going on 200k miles and I have never opened the engine. Only replaced parts in the suspension and an alternator last year. Very reliable trucks
I wish I could bring Scotty all my 90s vehicles to check and review.. Got a 93 Grand Marquis with 215k miles that runs like a top. Have taken it from north Florida to Tennessee on family trips about 8 times over the past 5 years, over 850 miles round trip. Oh and we got the car for free from a family member, doesn't get much better.. Hoping to reach 300k miles eventually
93 Grand Marquis 215k
98 Chevy S10 with the 2.2, 145k
98 Ranger XLT 4x4 with the 4.0 ohv, 140k
2004 Grand Prix with the 3800, 195k
They all run like tops, for the most part 😁
Had the 2004 explorer sport trac. Loved it! After 90k miles we had engine and transmission issues. Mechanics all hated working on it. Became a money pit. Went Toyota and never looked back
I have a 2005 with the V-6 that I bought new. As an old wrench, the Explorer has been well maintained, fluids changed, full synthetic oil every 5K, repaired when needed, and everything works perfectly. I renewed it a few years ago by replacing the suspension and transmission with a factory rebuild as it was shifting a little hard and I use it to tow. Including the transmission I don't think I've spent more than about 9 grand on repairs and maintenance in 17 years. That's pretty economical.
I have a 2010 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with almost 112,000 miles. It's an absolute powerhouse, and I love it. I've had it for about a month and a half. It handles hills and gravel roads like a boss. I just need a front differential fluid change on it. Overall, solid vehicle.
"The parts are cheap to buy", that's good because you are going to need a lot of them.

2002 Ford Explorer v6 4wd with 303,000 miles. Owned since about 2004. Rebuilt transmission almost a year and a half ago. Outside of normal maintenance, the wheel hub bearings replaced several times. Rust and corrosion been taking its toll on the under body. Rocker panels are gone. Still runs good. O/D OFF light flickers very rapidly after driving a few minutes. Started happening a few weeks ago. No problems though. Assuming it could have a code, places like AutoZone said they couldn't check it unless the Check Engine light was on too. Milex Mr. Transmission did the trans rebuild, but would have to drop it off and leave it just to check it. Kinda need it to drive to work. But, for the past few days, the light has stayed off.
I got a 98' ford explorer that's at 387k miles and still going!
I drove two Explorers that my employer provided. ( 1999 and 2007 V8 models). Both had over 200,000 miles when they were replaced but both had transmission problems. The 2007 automatic tranny went out at 70,000 miles and cost nearly $5K to repair. I will use Scotty’s phrase of driving the “best Explorer possible....Someone else’s!”” 🙂.Love you Scotty!
You should do some cheap, used, and reliable SUVs that you can use for light home renovision work. Thanks Scotty for all you do!
I just picked one up for 1800. It's got a 4.6 and it runs great. It even has a little DVD player to watch movies in the back seat. My only knock against it is it's got some rust brewing underneath but I think it will last a year and that's all I expect out of it.
Scotty didn’t mention the “weak transmission”
he did, kinda. saying that junk yards have spare engines and tranny if need be. but yes they are the weakest. my uncle doesnt abuse his trucks yet his old truck had 3 trannys. i dont know the length of each one. but after 3 just let it rust. got a f150, and 3 years in... bumper rusted though already LOL.
@@iamteamBB I have a 2004 Ford Explorer with 155,220 miles that I maintain very well, I had my transmission rebuilt at 140,000. I’m hoping to get another 50,000/75,000 miles out of it but if the transmission goes out again before that I’m junking it lol.
I have an 05 Mountaineer with the same engine/trans... I had my trans rebuilt with upgraded parts ~145k. I had the harsh reverse engagement and some flaring during shifts. I have ~250k on it now and it still shifts well... Unfortunately, I started to get the death rattle at startup and at ~2500 RPM. I think the Explorer in the video has a broken timing chain cassette... not lifters.
Or that the 4.6 V8 ones spit out spark plugs like bad teeth, not all but many do esp pre 06. Includes mustangs, crown vics etc.
@@golferpro1241 thats... at least u got mileage before rust lol. my uncle is 250, i think 5 years old. but its rusted. im not sure his current mileage but he was under 50k when i noticed the rust. east coast kills metal lol.
I have a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer with the 4.6 V8 which is the rebadged version of the Explorer. I've had mine since 2009 when it had just 18K miles. Now it has 126K miles. Only thing that I had issues with, were the transmission, which was rebuilt cheap back in 2014. And the alternator which I just replaced with a higher output unit which puts out 200 amps. I'm currently getting rid of the wear and tear parts instead of waiting for something to go bad. I already changed out the water pump, radiator, steering pump. Hood struts which Scotty was talking about which I got from Rock Auto that were laughably cheap. Next and last thing I'm gonna be doing is replacing the exhaust manifolds and tailpipe, along with a 40 series Magnaflow muffler. Fuel economy is no big deal and like a 2-3mpg difference from the 4.0 V6. Personally, if I was in the market for an Explorer, go for the 4.6 V8. I think the best years for the Explorer/Mountaineer were from 2006-2010.

2000-2006 GMT800 , Suburban, Yukon, Escalade are the best value in my opinion. As long as you take care of them within reason they'll run forever. I've torn down the 5.3ltr and 6.0ltr engines and see the factory hone in excellent condition after 300,000 miles. The biggest problems is the transmission, which as I've said before if you don't flush it and don't mess with it, will usually hold up. Even if it does go, the 4L60 is simple and cheap to repair.
I had one of these with a V6 was a 97 model. They had major issues with the timing chain guides. They were plastic and wore out fast. Then the chain would rattle like crazy.

My postal vehicle (LLV- Long Life Vehicle ), not the older one we see at the start of this video, is a 2000ish Ford Explorer with the 6 banger. As much abuse as they take, they have been very reliable!
The older postal vehicle we saw at the start of the video is a Chevy.
lifters, yea right, the noise is coming from timing chain components
That's what I was thinking.
I have the exact same car. Be wary of the automatic transmission from this era. The servo bores were not bushed so the steel rods wore the aluminum. I bought it used, 130,000 miles. Transmission started sticking in neutral as it shifted. Luckily I did buy a warranty that covered a full transmission reman. Shop said there was evidence of previous internal transmission work...
I’ve always heard bad things about this explorers , yet there’s a lot of them in the streets
That’s because they’ve either had a rebuilt engine/transmission or they’ve been taken very good care of
Transmissions always having problems
I guess it all make sense , they keep going cuz ppl keep putting money on them
The ones that haven't exploded yet. 😄
I have an 05 Mountaineer RWD with the same engine/trans... I have ~250k on mine. I had the 5r55 trans rebuilt at ~145k with upgraded parts and it is still shifts good. The 4.0 SOHC V6 has 3 timing chains (2 front/1 rear) and an extra chain for the balance shaft on 4wd... I think that rattle in the video is from one of the plastic timing chain guides breaking and causing a loose chain. The chain tensioners get loose as they age and the chains slap the guides until they break.. it was a common problem with the earlier models 2001-2003 but still occurs in later models but at higher mileage...(google Explorer death rattle) My Mountaineer is just started getting the rattle after startup and at ~2500 RPM. It will usually get progressively worse but sometimes they can go for months or years like that... but it is an interference engine so if it goes, your engine is toast. I would replace it but it requires pulling the engine and the timing procedure requires special tools... it is a strange engine with a jackshaft through the center... not an easy rebuild. They made some improvements to the guide material over the years but they are definitely the weak point in the engine. I have 250k so I cannot complain too much and parts are cheap... I would go for the V8 version since it has the chains in the front of the engine and the guides can be more easily accessed for replacement if you get the death rattle.
My daughter dives a 98 XLT, 150,000 miles, 302 AWD. Only needed tires brakes hoses batteries and spark plugs so far. No problem in foot plus of snow or cruising down the interstate. Just now starting to show small rust spots.

My 2003 Explorer has a slight problem with the trans taking too long to shift to 2nd. My mechanic told me it's a known problem. I deal with it by letting my foot off the gas when I want it to shift. I've put over 30k miles on her that way with a total mileage of over 200k!
If I recall the transmissions were junk between 2001 - 2009?
2007+ less known for that generation's transmission problems, but yes.
Ford explorer has the worst transmission ever made
For noisy lifters, Do a complete and thorough engine flush, and put in high quality synthetic oil and new filter. FLUSH: Lucas engine treatment 8 oz to 16 oz, (the more the better) run with original dirty oil and filter for 20 - 30 mins,( sitting at idle in park) drain oil, ( you will see a lot of sediment) put new filter on (Wix XP) and fill with premium quality synthetic oil. ( Castrol Magnatech) This will have a major improvement on noisy lifters if not completely eliminate the noise entirely.
Those eat transmissions like Candy. and that panel on the back will crack and cause the tailgate to rust
change tranny oil every 30,000 miles and they'll make it to 300,000, ours is at 210,000

Personally experienced this in my 02 Ford Explorer sport beautiful Red. Got er for $900 with a rebuilt trans and aftermarket rims and tires, dude was leaving the country… put 80k on her. One morning she started making the noise 2 months later. Boom.
Crash tested good too on the newer one for our new drivers. You actually have a decent amount of vehicle around you. The older ones had some roll over jeep-like issues and the firestone tire thing gave explorer s a bad rep for a bit. Unfortunately I'm a chevy guy and have had several chevy trailblazers. SS, 4.2s and even a 5.3l. they never done me wrong with just normal routine maintenance.
I had one of these before but it began to have timing chain issues. Quickly traded it in for something better.
Our 1999 ford expedition is almost at 300k miles. We use it to tow a work trailer every day. Good vehicle as well
Lifters? That’s the timing chain typical on those engines you have to remove the engine to replace them but they are good cars transmission is another weak point on them
Yes this are horrible explorers. He is a generation to late. 98 5 speed are the best ones
I think that sound at the beginning is the timing cassette. Common problem with the 4.0 sohc
Bingo! Its the death rattle.
Does Scotty voice over cartoons for his side hustle? I swear he sounded like he was the evil villain in some cartoon.
Here’s SK’s voice: 50% Uncle Fester, 50% Joe Pesci. Done.
I bought a 2000 v8 about 4 yrs ago for $400. Right now it only has about 160,000 miles on it. I love love this suv
this the one with 4 timing chains!
eh like gms 4.3 simple reliable like a rock!
Horrible timing chains and auto transmissions
I think they had 3. 2 in front and 1 in back, which is the one that fails go figure.
I have a 1996 explore 4.0L 5 speed manual 2 door with over 600k miles on it. It looks like carp but it drive good and gets me where I need to go. I love it. Only paid $200 for it from my buddy.
The trans on the Explorer go early.
Yeah he is way off with wich ones are the reliable generation explorer. A generation to late.
A co-worker went through three automatic tansmissions in his Explorer. So it is now called the "Exploder".
Just bought a 2004 Nissan Murano. Paid 1500 bucks for it. It's had a couple nickel and dime problems. I started running Ethanol Free gasoline in it. It immediately ran better and averaged 3 MPG more on the highway.
Scotty, you need to invite your mailman into the driveway so you can do a review of the Grumman LLV before they disappear.
I had a friend with the same Explorer (Year Close) & Crankshaft Sensor gave same codes. Got one at the junk yard, cheap fix !
How is it that as soon as I saw "$1,500 SUV" I knew it would be an Explorer? There are amazing examples out there for 1st and 2nd gens under 2k. I almost bought one but I bought an F-150 instead.
I'm sorry to hear that.
I drive a 2002 explorer xlt, id recommend making sure the alignment is right. Also id recommend getting a steering wheel cover if you have the plastic steering wheel.
Can you imagine the quality car that engineers could design if the govt kept its big EPA nose out of the mileage standards? More metal parts with longer functioning lives, safer cars, more power, more color choices, etc.
More videos of cheap to buy, reliable used vehicles please.
Scotty... Aren't those 6 cylinders the ones with a timing chain on the back?
Yes, they have three chains... two in the front and one in the rear. The plastic timing chain guides/tensioners are a weak point in these engines. You have to pull the engine to replace.
I passed on a sport trac for that reason. Most cases where the timing needs done, they want 5k+ to replace the engine.
They were one of the pioneers that paved the way of to vehicles today.
I don’t know why, but every time I see the Ford logo on a red car it just does not sit right with me
Ford logo on any car does not sit right.
@@itssaad8663 GM fanboy 😂
@@TTime685 Toyota/JDM*
@@itssaad8663 Ah, ok, so tell me why you don't like Ford? Out of the American makes/brands which would you choose if forced?
@@TTime685 if forced, any 4x4 cuz japnese are the preferred option for if. If not that then a german. Other than that any thing.
I love explores i buy a 1991 xl 4.o v6 4x4 FOR $600 ...now i just buy a 1995 xlt 4x4 4.o eng for the same price $600 ....n they are good ....never got stuck or stranded...the 91 explore has 95.000mil....and the 1995 has 156000mil ..runing strong .i drive it everyday
V8 are only 1 mpg city and 1 hwy less way more reliable and more power
For the most part the older Explorers were solid SUVs. The only major complaint I've heard was regarding the electronic 4X4 system. When it works, it works great.....But when it fails a high limit credit card is in order since the mechanic/technician will have to pull most, if not all, of the dash to get to the "guts" of the system to replace the control module. In 2011 a friend of mine paid nearly five grand in parts and labor to have the one in his Explorer replaced. It took three tries to get one that actually worked. Thankfully the mechanic/technician was an honest man and only charged for one effort. That Explorer is still on the road today with over 300,000 miles on the original six cylinder, transmission, and the 2011 4X4 module. And yes...It "ticks" on start up but settles down after a few miles.
“Think....Try to think anyway”. Well said Scotty.
Three Stooges Curly: I tried to think but nothing happened 🤷♂️ Nyuk Nyuk.
Perfect,.. I bought an 09 XLT 1 owner 100k miles. pick it up tomorrow
I'll stick to my 97 Blazer >;J
The 02 I had made it to 438k miles before the second transmission died. By then the suspension was about gone from dragging a 16ft cattle trailer across pastures
01:35 REAR ENDS !!! 😂. Bubble Butt.
