Did you listen to this report or not? It provides the new information that the mast was intact, debunking previous speculation that the yacht capsized after the mast was struck by lightning, and also that there is video footage from security cameras on land showing that the yacht sank within 60 seconds of being hit by a "water sprout".
Why do people think that because it was hot that the hatches, port holes and external doors would be left open. This is a multi million pound vessel and such boats always come with full air conditioning. Everybody would have port holes shut in order to stay cool!
For those that have perished in this awful incident i want to send my condolences to their loved ones. May they R.I.P

Okay… I built large custom sailboats: The yacht could only sink that quickly by having the ‘tornado’ knock down the yacht. What that means is that the mast took enough windage that it was pushed down towards the water until the deck on one side was below the waterline. Because the keel was retracted - in the upright position - the yacht did not right itself as it normally would have. The water cascaded into the yacht as it was on its side because the hatches were not secured. Lesson… never leave the keel in the upright position when anchored in deep water. Lesson… when designing such a large sailing vessel with an incredibly high mask and rigging beware of the exaggerated knock down danger. Lesson… even in large luxury yachts you should not leave all the hatches unsecured at night. Terrible tragedy.
There's a video showing it getting knocked down to about 70 degree's. The same video shows a 50 ft catamaran getting flipped over also.
The only caveat I have to that is perhaps that something like a 'microburst' or waterspout would not have been forecast in time. Its basic knowledge to shut all hatches and maybe have an anchor watch in 'dodgy' weather, certainly they had the crew for it. But if the evening was largely calm and hot, I doubt that any of the crew would have thought about it, and it was allegedly warm enough that the mother was sleeping on deck (I guess, in some hammock or on loungers) to escape the heat below decks. I think here that nudging the facts towards "the keel was partially raised, which, given the height of the mast, put the stability of the boat in jeopardy" is a huge stretch. I'm pretty sure the Bayesian would have had the best stability design going, given the extreme height of the mast, and that the weight of the keel raised or lowered should not have been a factor. But can anyone really design a ship or yacht for unexpected weather? If a waterspout or microburst developed rapidly, at night, no one would have seen it coming, and the Met radars would not have detected it and broadcast a warning in time. So my guess is that the yacht was settled down for an expected balmy night in the Med, with enough hatches and scuttles open to provide decent ventilation, and in the dark of the night she was hit by a sea spout/ microburst, and was knocked flat in seconds, and just filled instantly though open ports and hatches.
And shocking weather events do happen. Remember the Boscastle flood 20 years ago? Hot summer weather made a very localised extreme weather event. And with all the design care and attention, sometimes awful "Act of God" tragedies just happen.
so is this another example of "pilot" error, whether it be a plane or yacht or cruise ship, I wish I could trust all the professionals in the world including dr's, but the sad fact is terrible things happen, and I just don't want my life or daughters life to depend on someone I trusted..
ot eas total incompetence of the captain and crew ,it didn't spring up out of the blue they had ample time ,there was thunder and lighting ripping off and the sea was getting rougher by the minute that boat should never have sunk they had all the warning to batten down all hatches seal up the boat muster everyone to saloon and make ready with personal life preservers at hand ,the captain was weak and did,nt want to upset and discomfort his guest,s and paying master , all a ridiculous and preventable sinking
I would suggest consulting with the Yacht Builders/Designer or Skipper. Many Sailing Super-yachts are only designed to descend the keel while under way. They aren't really intended for use at anchor as they make quite a lot of noise. These yachts have a requirement to meet stability rules while the keel is either up or down.

Umm no , omg…I’m a full time sailor who lives on my sailboat 1. Losing a mast IMPROVES stability as long as no hull damage occurs due to dis-masting 2. Draft of this yacht with keel in lowered position is 10m they were anchored close to shore and a keel of this weight would take some time to retract if heading to harbour to escape weather it would be prudent to retract the keel earlier than absolutely required, safer in really bad weather is to head offshore into deeper water away from obstacles ie land , the decision to weather offshore or head for harbour would have been made by the master of the vessel and if heading in the keel would have been lifted , the yacht still has to meet stability requirements with keel in either position 3. The yacht was hit by lightning and then shook to the point where open hatches allowed water to enter ? What ? No… a lightning strike can often breach the hull as it grounds , my guess is a combination of things , open hatches, reduced stability and a sudden wind force on either beam possibly, a yacht in heavy weather should have all hatches and ports secure and shut , a yacht going down quick means a large hull breach or a knock down without secured hatches, the captain would have a mimic panel in the bridge showing the status all opening ports, hatches and bulkheads , these should be closed in heavy weather this prevents the vessel from sinking quickly if at all. if the keel was retracted the master should have ensured vessel was sufficiently sealed 4. Anchored way to close to shore if weather was expected…

World’s second highest mast, apparently retracted keel, open hatches and a freak water spout.
As discovery channel would say, disaster is a series of events and sailing on the edge of possibilities is a risky business.
The captain of the Bayesian, James Cutfield 51, told Italian police that he wasn’t monitoring the weather closely and the ship’s retractable keel was raised, even with an anchor depth of 160 feet. Lowering the retractable keel would have added stability and made it harder to capsize. The captain of the old sailboat anchored next to the modern Bayesian monitored the bad weather and started her engine to keep the old sailboat’s nose into the wind at anchor to keep from being rolled over in a quick wind shift. It took the Bayesian to capsize at anchor in less than 5 minutes by what the old sailboat's captain anchored next to her said. Complacent behaviour and good old-fashioned human error are seen yet again! Incidentally, I live in Malta and waterspouts are normal! They are not rare events. They were pre-warned...So much speculation when saying we must not speculate: why not?

the yatch sank and the other guy in the trial in the usa is killed in a hit and run. then again epstien comitted sucide in prison and the guards slept through it and the camera's weren't working.
We are told that the keel is often up when they are not sailing as having it down would produce "undesirable motion" when at anchor. The major failure was not having a functional anchor watch. If someone had been monitoring the weather, they may have been able to take precautions such as closing hatches, lowering the keel, turning on the engines and pointing the boat toward the coming storm.

There was another yacht right next to the stricken one which carried out all those precautions as for them the storm did NOT come out the blue. Was the captain of the stricken vessel found literally sleeping at the wheel?

Being Alina Trabattoni presumably an italian freelance journalist hired locally for the occasion, I must say she speaks a pretty good english.
A partially retracted keel in this depth of water wouldn’t have been necessary ….that design is to allow yachts to go into shallower water when desired……and so if it was partially retracted this together with the ingress of water from open hatches was distinctly a possible cause for the sinking of this yacht in these weather conditions….
You don’t quite understand, this keel on this boat was also the ballast and a yacht like this with such a high mast and the ballast compromised ( the keel been retraced) would make it very unstable vessel in the environment that was present. Just an observation of the information that is out there. Not pointing any blame.

@@thecarpenter645 Um no the vessel would have to meet certain stability requirements with keel in any position, the vessel would have less righting ability with the keel retracted but would still have sufficient stability, the keel is designed to have a balanced righting force when sailing plus the shape of the keel ie foil, improves upwind sailing performance . Anchored that close to shore having the keel retracted would have been prudent, bear in mind the retracted keel still provides ballast and stability and on a yacht this size the keel ballast doesn’t provide all of the stability, engines , generators, bunkers and ballast tanks are designed in unison to provide stability, I dare say a yacht used in the med would usually only deploy the keel when on long passage or when sailing
@@mitchpender8113 it would have self righted even with the keel fully up ,its incompetence of the captain thats caused this sinking , he was extremely weak and did,nt want to upset and discomfort the guests and pay master , he had ample time with lighting thunder waves all around him getting worse by the minute he should have closed all hatches , port holes even if it means going into guest bedrooms and checking everyone should have been mustered to the saloon and life preservers brought to hand ,anchors can be controlled from pilot house , only most experienced hooked onto boat on a jack line allowed outside to deal with anchors , an unnecessary sinking the crew and captain was complacent , the owner also ,he should have stipulated he must be informed when sea ,wind conditions get to a certain state to oversee how catpn and crew dealing with it

No doubt all video and instrument log information was lost by chance as they were all turned off for maintenance.

I would say the reason the yacht sank was because at a certain point it became negatively buoyant. How that came about I wouldn't care to speculate. That, is for the investigation to determine.

No.. he used the engines to avoid other boats as they swung in the wind & to help prevent the anchor from dragging
@@Durnyful agreed full time sailor here , never have the screws spinning on anchor in a blow unless you are moving up on the anchor chain to redeploy or retract it’s safer offshore in a blow anyway
Sometimes it’s prudent to have the engine running but out of gear in case yours or another boat drags , if you are running in gear to keep the bow into the wind you would never have an anchor deployed unless you want to lose the boat
The bow will always generally be into the wind. Engines started to help if any issues.
@@funda298 no usually when a blow comes in it is at a different angle to the prevailing wind and besides wind shifts are really common and can wheel the direction by up to 30deg far faster than you will ever respond with the rudder which will unset the anchor if the boat drives forward under power rather than responding to the weather plus and this is the biggest issue it’s really hard to respond not only to direction but speed it’s really easy to misjudge and drive up on the ground tackle and either rip the shaft out of the boat or lose a prop when it hits the chain.. result , no propulsion possibly a large hole in the hull AND worst of all you lose your main anchor.. if you need to run the boat into the wind with props spinning, my god retract the anchor I’ve seen a boat lost in QLD Australia this exact way I agree with running the engine in neutral if things get hairy , but as soon as you drop into gear first job is to drive up on the anchor retracting rode/ chain , our rule is if the boat goes into gear you have to redeploy at the least
That Keel should have been fully extended to offer counter weight balance in such inclement weather if this particular vessel with such a tall Mast was to have any chance at all of surviving. If it were retracted, the vessel was doomed from the start.
I would imagine with pure unfounded speculation. That the integrity of a ships hull might not withstand the rigours of people who are very upset with you.

No matter how the yacht, lives are more precious and people must know when they are on a boat that things can go wrong very fast and advanced preparation can save lives!
The captain must tell everyone what’s up, how to get your life jacket on and off and the procedures for a possible sinking, even if it is as unsinkable as the Titanic!
It is his duty! And if that’s not agreeable to everyone on the ship, then he should not be sailing the boat!

The keel being lifted is a key element, the mast receiving lighting isn't, on the contrary, a shorter mast would contribute to a more stable boat. This immense mast + the keel being lifted + a storm is the perfect combination to get the boat capized, then water gets in through the hatches.

As a highly experienced and qualified professional Superyacht Captain with a lifetime's experience, this is very poor reporting. At least she accepts it's mostly all speculation at this point.
The question is not why it sank. The question is why is this so much in the news? Just a small mention would have been enough.
At 68 I worked on large vessels all my life and this is definitely extremely weird. I would bet anything that the retractable keel was in the all the way up position. No doubt it was designed to go all the way up into the hull so they could go into shallow water area's.

Far more people die on the roads every year (every week?) than died on Titanic. Unexpected, freak, disasters interest people for a number of reasons.

The blame game has begun.
The ship was at anchor, with a retracted keel, and furled sails, this would be normal for any sailing ship.
However with a draught of 9.8 m, and mast, height of 72 m, there is a serious metacentric shift.
With sail deployment caused by the water spout/ tornado, this may have led to capsize.
May they rest in peace.

Could this have been prevented though. The captain should have known the ins and outs of the boat.. and had an alarm on the boat for all to get out of need be. If they weren't far from land why couldn't help have come sooner to them .

Most sailing ships can't retract the keel.
His business partner dead 3 days before. This is so sus. Keel up would enable the craft to move before the wind more easily without listing over. So no. No Times radio.
Not exactly true especially when you have a vessel of this size with such a high mast and when the keel is also the ballast, it could easily sink if wind listed past a certain point. Especially if any hatches or portholes aren't secured and closed.
To add its not at all suspect, unless your suggesting someone somehow has control of the weather and oceans...

*In my learned opinion a a large compressed air balloon/raft used to lift ships of the sea floor was punctured underneath the yacht and this sudden release of air reduced the buoyancy of water and capsized it. i tested it using a toy boat and puncturing a balloon submerged underneath it. the ship sank quickly.. i suggest you do it for yourself.*

It sounds to me as if a bomb took the yacht down. I love it the way the press tries to make it sound like a freak storm took this boat down. These people were corrupt and this is how corruption sometime end!

Well with the hatches being open,the preparation for bad weather has been insufficient, if this the case,bad seamanship is partly to blame for it, Also the matter of the keel is strange. This you only do when you go in to shallow water.that is what it is made for, therefor the stability of the boat was not only based on the keel, a retractable keel would be to heavy to weight it down to be the main point of ballast it is helping but not by much,the keel ballast is only a integrate part of stability’s with normal non retractable common keels,where the ballast is in the keel itself . I have seen a RUclips video of a smaller sailboat hit by a water spout . It had a nock down only by the surface of the mast. But came up again

I think everyone should have been up at 2:00 AM for emergency procedures with grave concerns with bad weather, forecasts of tornados, with life vests etc! All people should have been notified of the danger with updated forecasts!

Umm when a vessel goes down quick it’s more a point of where you are located usually, owners cabins are usually on lower decks to assist with motion at sea no way a crew on deck would be able to reach passengers below in time

Guys on that yacht were involved in a crooked HP deal (acquisition of a smaller company) where around 4bil $ was illegally made coz of overvaluation. Seems someone didn't keep to their end of the deal or some other variant of crooks killing each other.

This is so strange. Stephen was hit by a car while he was jogging. He wasn't going to be on the yacht. He died a just days before the yacht sailed. I can't find anywhere that mentions who was driving the car.

My impression is keel usually lowered in sailing mode to counter wind effect, not when motoring for efficiency, or at anchor as boat swings like a wearhervane and always faces prevailing wind. Sudden tornado or waterspout is a very strange and rare phenomenon.

Waterspout would have had a huge windage effect on the mast, I’ve stood on similar size superyachts and you can feel them rock about in the gusts.. keel up wouldn’t have helped although they often motor with the keel up for comfort, pushed over on her side, filled with water through the galley doors, going down in no time at all, 😢 absolutely awful

its entirely possible that the boat caught the anchor around the keel/rudder,if this happens you are in a very bad situation,unable to manoeuvre and stuck broadside to the wind,seen it happen a few times in my life

I propose that the type of the storm momentarily evacuated water from under the bow, which destabilised the yacht, as if there was no water under the hull. Kind of like a "Bermuda Tringle" phenomenon. As for the proceedings of the blame game: The Italians blamed their seismologists for not predicting an earthquake and jailed them. So -- for a storm that sank no other yachts in the vicinity -- we'll have to wait until the investigation comes to some conclusion, other than the Bayesian was in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Having the keel partially retracted would still have made the boat more stable then fully retracted, except if there is some indication it broke off

The Italians have dealt with this very well I praise them for all their efforts in this tragedy and they are doing everything they can to bring about justice in this case, very well done to Italy

A sailing vessel like Bayesian has a retractable keel that is usually only in the down position when under sail. Almost never when on anchor as the upper keel would suffice for stability on anchor. Having the keel ‘up’ is not at all unusual at when at anchor.
If you watch carefully, the anchor masthead light (designed for being visible in all weather) is still visible in the cct video . The fading of the confort lights (deck and mast) is due to the fast fog / rain thickening . The boat did not sink at the video catching time, but later (when ?) . Also open hatches would never fill up such a big ocean range boat in 2 minutes (has somebody estimated the required flowrate to achieve that ? Also consider rooms, doors and corridors that limit the flow). Was there a watchman at the helm ? Why no channel 16 mayday call ?? .. so many questions .. strange tragedy.

This meteorological event could havesank any boat. The issue is the bad design of this italian boat sank it very fast. Fact the Manual of yhe Boat said to keep the keel down on anchor
What do Yacht designers know. Speaking to some Fishing Trawler men a wave breach over the rear can bring 10 to 20 tons of water per wave. If the rear patio doors on that yacht were open its going down.

This is an unofficial speculation of the events.
60 seconds is false, as the Captain has already stated it took 12 mins for the boat to sink.
The only time keel would be down is under sale, even if the Yacht had been pushed over , there would be more than enough ballast for it to right itself.
While the yacht was on anchor it can be clearly seen on GPS Global positioning that the storm was such that it had dragged it's anchor until it more than lightly found solid ground.
In this scenario, the severity of the weather conditions has lead to the Yacht been pushed in to the sea either at the stern or bow depending on were mooring lines were attached.
Once the Yacht had taken on water in this situation to the point it was no longer buoyant, it would only be a matter of minutes for the Yacht to sink as the air was expelled from the Vessel.
Though a very tragic accident, I believe the Captain and Crew have done well to save all they have.
Too much internal water is generally counterintuitive for any vessel attempting to maintain positive buoyancy.
