Just stumbled upon your vids as a new dark and darker player and I have to say you explain your thoughts excellently. It's easy to follow and I hope your channel flourishes
Two tips: daggers can initiate their hit box beyond your shield, in your face. Back pedal while blocking, or if you are a plate armored PDR fighter, trade hits and only use the shield for their projectiles. Also, chanelled spells have an active hit box where the spell is cast from (the enemy's hands or staff). If that touches your shield, their hand will crumple like they smacked a wall and it stops the cast. The warlocks ray of darkness, wizards magic missile, or even a cheeky life drain can be interrupted with a block targetting their hand. Its also important to note that the spell comes from that hitbox, so blocking in its direction is good at close range anyways.
this info is amazing! I'm a platelock main and came to to realization that the heater shield was the great equalizer against most of the situations that would hard counter me., I have been trying to figure out how to make better use of the shield and found your channel which has pointed out alot more nuance in the ways you can make use of the shield.
hey there, thanks for this note! happy to help others figure this game out and enjoy success in the dungeon! appreciate your comment & hope to see you around!
As a current bard main, I would really love to see a video dedicated to the buckler. A lot of the stuff here certainly applies, but I wonder if you have any buckler specific tips, or tricks. great stuff thank you!!
this vid is from back in the Spring, still some very relevant points tho since the buckler hasn't really changed since then! thanks for your comment!! ruclips.net/video/f2SlGltQvxA/видео.html
i really like the lantern shield its a solid balance between the round shield and the buckler and it lets you light up your opponent while fighting in dark spaces.
Lantern shield is really cool and has so many unique quirks to it that people would love to know, stuff such as being able to swing your melee weapon inbetween the two riposte stabs for a quick 3 hit combo, or the way it essentially guarantees a combo attack proc, the way the light can affect duels, the blindingly fast riposte with shield mastery etc. So many things to make a video about
I think the lantern shield might be the best but it's also more skill based. The bigger shield is more forgiving to mistakes but the lantern brings big dps returns for being less defensive. I've been playing with both and the lantern counter attack combo you mentioned has secured me a few kills. The bigger shield has also saved my life I'm sure too... I would love to see a lantern shield only video.
@@erikreber3695 my trouble with lantern shield is two-fold: 1) it's too slow for how small it is, making a push on ranged or magic damage way more difficult.. and 2) the blocking power is too low IMO, and because I'm not riposting after every block, I find myself getting staggered more often than I'd like. all-in-all it's not my preference or playstyle these days!
Another banger! Thanks for the timestamps (in the description).. I hate the yt bug where they sometimes don't show in the player sadge. See you on Monday for the live stream!
I've tried out a full plate fighter with a buckler and sword, and while blocking smaller weapons is harder, as you mentioned with hilt blocking, all you need to do is get as close as possible to easily block two handed weapons. The build out dps's any one handed weapons because of the full plate, and the shield let's you stuff larger weapons and beat them without even taking a hit. The buckler also allows you to jump crouch for movement to try and block incoming spells and arrows, and while the heater shield covers 90% of you while jumping crouching the buckler still covers about 50% which you can angle up for head or down for feet coverage
such a great comment, thanks!! I definitely didn't appreciate the power of the bucker in terms of handle stuffing.. I always imagined it as a super hard shield to use vs. the proper/full swing. but stuffing.. I can't wait to try it out more! oh and good call about the jumpcrouch block with the buckler too!!
Appreciate all your hard work on these kind of videos... actually all of your videos hahaha. Doing god's work out there bro. Also happy to see you're gaining more and more subs! you deserve it!
appreciate this sooo much, thanks!! hope these vids have some small impact on a healthy playerbase -- more people will stick around and play if they 'get how things work' and have fun in the process!!
respect for the longsword, to be sure! just not my jam because I like the faster attacks of 1-handers. plus the shield just makes so many other aspects of the game so comfortable. also, how does a longsword push against rangers? with their face. they push with their face :)
@@YourBoyBlinn that’s what I’m saying. It’s possible to block arrows with the long sword like some kind of Jedi but it’s insanely easier and more reliable to just use a shield
@@dylanwysocki4406 yeah I've seen the longsword masters blow arrows & bolts & SPELLS, but also know it's taken them 1200+ hours to get there. most folks never reach those depths, and I figure a shield is just a generally more accessible way to gain big power in this game. hence all this channel content!! thanks for sharing your thoughts :)
I really like playing this game as a sword and shield fighter. My friend plays as a warlock and when we play together i'm always telling him that having more dex gives me a better chance to survive than wearing a full plate armor. I would say something like "Why should i wear stronger armor if i'll block all the attacks?" and then proceed to get destroyed because i'm new to the game lol. Also the shadow/stealth aproach doesn't work with him because the guy is waaaay too noisy haha. But your content have helped improve my skills as a sword and shield player. Thanks a lot man and keep it up the with your content.
hey thanks for the comment! totally agree the shield blocks allow us to wear lighter armor. too bad about your noisy warlock friend haha.. I've managed to pull off some great stealthy plays in duos and it's really satisfying! hope to see you around!!
I switched to a buckler. You’ll block a little less but you recover faster from blocks and move faster for better spacing of opponents in melee. Barricade helps. Definitely give it a try now that you’re an expert with the heater and can probably block a lot of stuff with the buckler. Maybe it won’t be worth it in 3s but in solos I love it. I have not lost a melee fight since I switched! The speed boost lets you side step attacks and get off center faster to throw off the swings of your opponent. You also are faster than rangers and warlocks expect you to be. I went for some movement speed but mostly hp, +damage, action speed as the priority on gear. Topf, fine cuirass, reinforced, dark leather leggings, rugged boots for my base vigor. Also sword mastery might be better than counter attack in terms of raw damage since it’s always active vs only on a block. You don’t get the movement speed but you get action speed. Something to think about! Good luck with the videos keep up the great content!
wow awesome comments! nice idea dropping counter-attack for sword mastery, but trouble is im not always using a sword.. so need to think about that one. and also totally hear you about the speed & stagger benefits of the buckler, but I found it just horrible for pushing/blocking ranged damage or spells -- did a little vid on my experience here: ruclips.net/video/f2SlGltQvxA/видео.html
@@YourBoyBlinn yeah so far when I faced rangers with it they weren’t the good ones who hit shots even when you’re juking. Heater shield is definitely better for that. I think it’s a trade off because vs the spear you might as well be buckler and only block the third attack while dodging hopefully the others. The number one reason I kill them is I move taster than they are used to I think. I’m in the same boat as you probably, learning and trying to innovate. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking something is best and not trying everything else out, so I keep mixing it up. It’s also a very different game at the higher levels and things become much narrower in terms of what is viable. Enjoying the vids and good commentary!
amazing video! I loved the lantern shield as a beginner for its counter-attack, but stopped using it due to the fact that it seemed like it was bad from lack of overall community use. I would love to see a video from you about the subject! My only advice I can offer is that Sookie Spy's new AP farming video mentions a good combo with the lantern shield, so perhaps that might help you with your own research. Either way, I look forward to more of your content! :)
Been saying this for a while! Alot of people complain about move speed builds/stat ball builds and I can't help but wonder if they're just treating the game as, "I poke a bit and win, then use move speed and win." There's so much more nuance. Environmental, perk dependency, so much more depth than people care to look in on!
Ive been playing a similar build the light armor and shield just works really well . Then counter attack just is a great perk. Also been working on double axe barb and been really enjoying it. And thank you for explaining impact power a bit never really realized how that worked with everything
OH WOW, nice!! haha that's how you knw the game is good.. when you don't even feel like sleeping that much :) thanks for your comment & good luck in the dungeon buddy!
yay! I'm glad you said this because I was a bit nervous at first to post 'guides' without having a completely exhaustive understanding of all aspects of fighter & fighter combat. good luck in your adventures!
not playing fighter but this video will definitely be useful for my buckler as bard also very great video, very good explaining and we can really feel your passion I hope the best for you !
yay passion! and yes, I hope some of the more fundamental aspects of this blocking tech can help you regardless of which shield or class you prefer -- good luck out there!!
Your content is awesome and I hope you'll get more recognition for the info you're providing. Keep up the good work! Also, do you think hitting the legs when fighting another shield-and-sword fighter would be beneficial or useful? Or against other classes in general?
hey thanks very much!! leg shots can be useful in that the make the defending player feel unsafe. while hits to the legs don't do much damage, there is psychological pressure that is difficult to ignore or overcome :)
Great video, another one. Loving your content, I have a suggestion for more videos, you could compile fights with a certain class and comment on best strategies, like 3 fights with barbarians/rangers/etc. Oh! I also use gloves when playing haha
Dunno about that, from the looks of it you have to become a shield onetrick to be relevant, otherwise you're food for everyone but poorly geared rogues maybe
@meltdown4126 what class do you think would be more versatile or easier for a new user? I think be able to use such a large variety of equipment already goes a long way to both points . New people can equip nearly anything they find with weapon mastery
@@UnderfundedScientist dont have nearly enough experience with the game to give you a good answer. My current idea is to play fighter to the point where I'm not getting hit by mobs anymore, then try other more vulnerable classes to see what I like personally. If you feel like you can play the kiting game in PVP scenarios already Warlock sounds like a safe enough bet since these can afford to get pve damaged (yay cool balance approach with limitless healing and casts).
I played Warlock up to lvl 40 now as my very first char! I than started to look into Barbarian (lvl11), Wizard (lvl13), Cleric (lvl15), Rogue (lvl7). I play since a bit over a week now. Having a hard time with the mobs, memorizing there attack patterns and stuff before going a step further and focus a bit more on PvP. But Im most interested in the versatility(?) of the Fighter (I played him up to lvl15 today and chose nearly exact the same perks&skills like you did). Found your vid as I want to refine - god - learn the basics of blocking at first as blocking has like a 5% success rate at the moment ":D The video was so well edited with the example fights and explanations that I had to subscribe! Great job, greetings from Germany ❤

Does the half block reduce incoming damage? And also how do you feel about less common 1 handed weapons, like the horseman axe or the viking sword? Atleast they are less common to me.
no, unfortunately the half-block does not reduce incoming damage, to my knowledge at least -- which is a bit sad, but a hit is a hit! as for the horseman's axe: the range is a bit short for my tastes and I don't like the -25 move speed penalty.. and viking: it's not a bad sword, but swing slower than I like, so I feel it's less effective against the fast-attacking dagger/rapier classes. good luck out there!!!
people sleep on the shields because most of them are super inconsistent but the heater shield is actually op once you understand how to use it. I played your build for a bit and the fear I would put in rangers, wizards, and warlocks as I sprinted at them blocking all their ranged options was very satisfying. since I main bard I was kinda able to translate some of that over when we only had the buckler, but now we have the lantern shield (also very slept on) that actually works decently well as a shield and ive been able to pull off some pretty crazy wins with it. on bard im not exactly looking for blocks, but landing one block when you need to can instantaneously turn the tides of a fight.
YES. a single targeted block on an obvious incoming attack can be all you need to win the fight, or totally turn things around for your team. thanks for the comment!!
As I said with the lantern shield, it's impact resistance of 3 and block speed multiplier of 50% (slows you by 50% same if not worse than the pavise) makes it practically unusable. It's my favorite item in the game so of course I'd like to see you clobber people with it, but it's so rough to actually use it but it needs a buff desperately. 5-6 impact resistance, and maybe a 30-40% slow during block, then I'd call it a viable tradeoff with the heater If you do use it be wary, because the back swing of the riposte lasts a really long time, can't riposte a goblin archer and consistently block his second arrow
ahhhh thanks for the additional info here!! truly underwhelming stats for the lantern shield, but I suppose it's better to trickle out a new weapon like this in an un-powered state, rather than release another broken item into the game and then scramble to reduce its power after it gets picked up and abused en masse ? happy weekend!!
I started out with a shield build and struggled. When i switched to dual wield fighter and started learning attack patterns the game became much more enjoyable.
heh I went the opposite direction! played solo slayer on Duos ruins for like 3 straight months last year and then decided that I didn't want to just duck & space to avoid taking damage!
Something that is not appreciated by many players is that the dex stat complement the use of shields as the increased action speed contributes towards faster blocks and not just higher attack speed.
I had some snobby douches kick me earlier because I took a dex ring on my barbarian and took one of the helmets with dexterity on it. They wanted me to run shield barb but be too slow to block 😂
I play a lot of bard with a shield for many of the same reasons you seem to prefer playing a fighter with a shield. Most of my shield use revolves around the buckler and rapier combo. From my experience in the game, the lantern shield feels a bit more challenging to block with compared to the buckler, possibly because I'm less accustomed to it. The riposte attack move is undeniably powerful, but it's somewhat slow and leaves you completely vulnerable to counterattacks. I'd appreciate hearing your opinion on shield perks and whether it enhances the lantern shield's usability.
hey thanks for this! I too think the lantern shield feels different than the buckler, but in an unexpected way.. almost like it sits lower than I expect, or it's just not as snappy as the buckler. totally right about being exposed/vulnerable from the counter-attack.. will def keep this in mind for future content. good luck in your adventures!!
Some really good tech here, especially the tip on shield mastery which kind of confused me since it didn't seem to work half the time, I didn't realize there was such a small window for the attack speed buff. Any thoughts on Rondel dagger as a primary with this playstyle?
nice! glad the vid helped you get some perspective on the snield mastery perk! took me a while to finally figure out why it was only working sometimes haha. never really considered the rondel tbh.. I know it's a powerful build, but something about it doesn't gel with my idea of a comfortable melee (a bit too close & erratic for my tastes). might be good for chasing down running players tho.. hmmm. thanks for the reminder!!
I like to think you the wide camera swings are simulations of pushing through the attack with your shield for instance if someone swings at you and you half heartedly block you are just smashing through your defense you have to do it with gumption
@@YourBoyBlinn thanks 😊 I never really thought about it that way till recently and your video, also it kinda goes with the half block mechanic. i don't have much time into this game but I do love it and an so happy to have it back on steam. Do you ever play with subscribers
yes and no.. yes in that both classes can use the shield, but no in that the fighter perks make counter-attacking MUCH faster and more viable. I the only non-fighter shield class I've messed around with has been cleric, and I found it very difficult to block and retaliate the same way I can on fighter. also, small shields are VERY hard to use to block!!
Love it. So you rock some non plate chest and legs for that move speed. What are your go to pieces for those spots? Something beefier than loose trousers? And the chest?
in general its armor vs not armor since mace gives armor pen, but it could also just be weapon matchup specific, like how mace is easier to parry with longsword
i love using the mace against the longsword. mostly this is because the common conception is that the mace is 'easy to parry' but I've got a technique where I swing wide to avoid the parry and then drag the mace back into the opponent's body. here's a clip that explains it: ruclips.net/video/sqwrDb---Es/видео.htmlsi=7QEUgEKijoZ4oUsI&t=379 other than that, my rule of thumb is that the mace is for medium+ armor, arming sword for cloth. the only exception is for slow-swinging two-handed weapons, where I like the arming sword better because the faster swing makes it easy to hit between enemy attacks.. in this case I'll use the arming sword even in the opponent has heavy armor -- hope that helps!!
perfect block perk is really only useful on longsword. taunt is a lot better in 1vX, but if you have decent PDR when your block is up, that extra 10% could put you into a new threshold. going from 40% to 50% or 50% to 60% is a pretty big gain. one thing to watch for with hilt blocking is animations breaking and them hitting you through the shield. If their attack starts and you're too close, or the server is particularly icky that day, its just going to phase through the shield and you're getting hit. Desync in general this patch has been pretty bad which is unfortunate for shieldbros I don't think you went into enough detail about predicting swings in a fight. You don't need to have foresight so long as you know what a weapons pattern is, and whether it has an alt swing. They're either going to swing from a known direction, run, or swap to another weapon. Just wait it out. If they don't swing, use footwork to back them up against a wall. They'll swing once they realize what's going on. If you're extremely high dex, have adrenaline rush ability, or are using a dagger, you can also just poke them and return to the shield before they can swing. Do it enough and they'll be forced to swing. Lastly, if you know you can consistently block a given swing, use that. Present that you're going to block that swing before they do it, and they're very likely going to start aiming for feet. If you are correct in that prediction you can either jump it, or start your swing when they swing and go for a headshot. headshot > leg shot so you won the damage trade. I don't love this strat because I hate trading for damage, but it is another tool to pressure the other guy into making a mistake.
super excellent points, and I like the idea of attacking from block. you sound really knowledgeable & I hope you come back and comment again sometime, thanks!!
Hey dude, great video! Especially appreciate you showing your deaths as well. I watch a load of tutorial videos and it’s just dudes steam rolling everyone haha. Nice to see good players also die now and again 😅
only have 100 hours into but i also feel like i don´t want to play anything but shield fighter ; quickly pivoted to using shields; i have never played a game where using shields is this much fun
yeah I came from Chivalry II and that game has some very *generous* arcade-style blocking.. was def a learning curve to get use to the ultra-precise blocking universe of DaD. thanks for the comment!
Love lantern shield but takes practice. Immediately after successful block u press block again and it stabs opponent with the front spike. Must be done immediately after successful block and up close but ended many melee for me.
damn, i didnt realized that i had to really anticipate the attack due to to server stuff. I always feel like I get hit through shield, this explains a lot.
Hey dude, I’ve been loving the content as it’s helped me improve as a fighter since I started a week ago. Quick question, which weapons can you handle block that you know of besides bardiche and morning star?
basically all weapons, afaik -- I've recently gotten handle blocks on the rapier, the falchion, even a kriss dagger... the only weapons it might not be possible on are the stabbing/trusting attacks like longsword, spear, crystal sword etc. be careful out there & good luck!!
Do you ever do duos or trios? It could be cool if you do a series coaching a noob who can't play fighter good/can't block etc. Either playing alongside them or screen sharing them as they do solo.
yup I play duos and trios, but not really in a training capacity! my friends know the maps WAY better than I do, so it's really me who is learning from them!
@@futz1lla oooof yikes. haha leave it to the playerbase to tell other people what's actually going on. man, feels like the lantern shield needs a lot of love before it becomes semi-viable :)
falchion to me has always just felt sluggish. the arming sword is WAY faster and helps me get inside the attack swing timing of larger weapons (so I can go back to blocking & not trade). I also don't like the opening swing of the falchion combo, since it's pretty wide from the right. I found I ended up hitting walls/lamps in the heat of close-quarters combat. hope this helps shed some light!
@@C-R. hmmmm I think if I could only choose one, my true love is the arming sword, just because it has the most balance between swing speed, damage, and diverse attack pattern. I'm super comfortable with it for clearing PvE and even though it has no armor pen, it attacks SUPER fast out of the counter-attack, and can be used effectively against armored opponents if you are patient enough. thanks for the question!!
i find crouch blocking like a matrix guy helps with head shots and jump blocking for certain longers weapons. i have been maining long sword fighter with dex str and pdr and adr rush windlanss crossbow. i tend to never have a problom with other sheild fighters with the long sword and alot of action speed
What's your opinion on ranged with weapon mastery? I've seen the majority of other fighters use the windlass or the longbow with weapons mastery. I've seen a few use the survival bow but it wasn't great. Is the extra damage worth the slower fire rate? You have a longer range and typically I only shoot once or twice with the crossbow anyways...
if ur in solos use surv bow with weapon mastery id ur in trios u cna run all but best is long bow and crossbow but crossbow is a ignititive weapon instead of chaseing
IMO it depends on your playstyle, and/or how you intend to use the bow. are you just looking for 1 shot to open combat, or maybe firing from a sneaky position? longbow! are you more active and want to use your bow for chip damage mid-fight? survival or recurve! I choose recurve because I prefer the mix of draw speed, damage, and projectile speed, but to each their own!!
spears is a good example of choosing your battles. get in close and duck/dodge the first 2 attacks.. the third attack is a juicy overhead that's WAAYYY easier to block :)
Learned a good bit from this video so thank you. I noticed shield mastery says it increases action speed towards your next block, not your next attack, is that incorrectly stated in-game?
I believe so! it should say action speed towards your next action (which can be applied to an attack, if that's the first thing you do after successful block!)
@@YourBoyBlinni suspect that the initial intention was for it to make you stronger vs chained heavy weapon attacks or multiple attacks, since there already is a perk for counterattacking. Except the movement bonus, i would say this perk does a better job than the counterattack perk at counterattacking, since the 50% vs 10% is incredibly much faster.
@@matt-z5j haha yeah totally. never thought of the 50% action speed bonus as a means to help fighters chain fast blocks.. but of course! maybe it's because I always counter attack after the first block, I rarely try (or need) to chain multiple blocks together, but the situation you described makes good sense! thanks!!
I figured a lot of this stuff out by getting killed and reflecting on what happend. Sometimes melee is like a 2 second exchange and then you are dead. Thinking about suggesting PvP damage should be lowered by a certain % for everyone. I Think rouges would suffer from this though. They could make a new stat that adds +%pvp damage and even +%PvE damage too.

So many things to make a video about
very tempting............ >:)
@@erikreber3695 my trouble with lantern shield is two-fold: 1) it's too slow for how small it is, making a push on ranged or magic damage way more difficult.. and 2) the blocking power is too low IMO, and because I'm not riposting after every block, I find myself getting staggered more often than I'd like. all-in-all it's not my preference or playstyle these days!

thanks Clippy, you're the best!!!!
we got it back Clippy, no worries!
I can't wait to try it out more! oh and good call about the jumpcrouch block with the buckler too!!
excellent way of explaining things, very clear
hey thanks very much!!
Great stuff. Great delivery style. The verbal explanation followed by a short clip to illustrate is very helpful.
Great to hear, thanks!!
All my friends swear by the fighter long sword. Your videos make me want to go shield mace all the time. Love the content
respect for the longsword, to be sure! just not my jam because I like the faster attacks of 1-handers. plus the shield just makes so many other aspects of the game so comfortable. also, how does a longsword push against rangers? with their face. they push with their face :)
@@dylanwysocki4406blocking is sure fun, but that longsword double reposte does like 300 + damage to the head, and it is the grey variant
Now hes out here dropping the holy scripture of shield fighter. So much good info, and thank you for putting the time in to get this data and footage.
if I had more time, I would have carved it in stone :) but on second thought, you can't put a slab on YT haha
Enjoying the vids and good commentary!
thanks again friend!
Didn't know about stoping things by hitting hands with shields, thanks video maker and other comments!
handle blocking is clutch! good luck out there!!
amazing video! :)
thanks for this input & recos!! I appreciate it and definitely take these comments to heart when planning my next vids :) hope to see you around!!
I love that this game does not have hard meta, meaning that even not movement speed builds for example have a good time during pvp.
Been saying this for a while! Alot of people complain about move speed builds/stat ball builds and I can't help but wonder if they're just treating the game as, "I poke a bit and win, then use move speed and win." There's so much more nuance. Environmental, perk dependency, so much more depth than people care to look in on!
yeah, I totally agree and also think this game is special as a result. hope you have a great weekend!!
@@TheHonestSage yeah, a veritable choose your own adventure haha

Your content is awesome and I hope you'll get more recognition for the info you're providing. Keep up the good work!
Also, do you think hitting the legs when fighting another shield-and-sword fighter would be beneficial or useful? Or against other classes in general?
hey thanks very much!! leg shots can be useful in that the make the defending player feel unsafe. while hits to the legs don't do much damage, there is psychological pressure that is difficult to ignore or overcome :)
The return of Burger!!! Love it!!!
love Burger. she's always got great advice :3
Great video, another one. Loving your content, I have a suggestion for more videos, you could compile fights with a certain class and comment on best strategies, like 3 fights with barbarians/rangers/etc. Oh! I also use gloves when playing haha

Fantastic information, thank you! Only started out this month, but shields seem very cool in DaD.
yay!! welcome in friend :)
Easily the most versatile, new user friendly class
wholeheartedly agree!!
Found your vid as I want to refine - god - learn the basics of blocking at first as blocking has like a 5% success rate at the moment ":D

Solid vid! Really enjoyed the video it’s helped me immensely to up my blocking game and then some! Cheers 🍻

hey hey thanks so much!! hope to see you around & good luck in the dungeon!
people sleep on the shields because most of them are super inconsistent but the heater shield is actually op once you understand how to use it.
5-6 impact resistance, and maybe a 30-40% slow during block, then I'd call it a viable tradeoff with the heater
If you do use it be wary, because the back swing of the riposte lasts a really long time, can't riposte a goblin archer and consistently block his second arrow
ahhhh thanks for the additional info here!! truly underwhelming stats for the lantern shield, but I suppose it's better to trickle out a new weapon like this in an un-powered state, rather than release another broken item into the game and then scramble to reduce its power after it gets picked up and abused en masse ? happy weekend!!
Very helpful, cheers
my pleasure, good luck out there!
Something that is not appreciated by many players is that the dex stat complement the use of shields as the increased action speed contributes towards faster blocks and not just higher attack speed.
yeah totally, I've been trying to mention the impact of Dex on blocking speed in each of my fighter guide videos, hope it helps get the word out!!
I had some snobby douches kick me earlier because I took a dex ring on my barbarian and took one of the helmets with dexterity on it. They wanted me to run shield barb but be too slow to block 😂
@@christianlandgrave5796 yeah low dex makes it hard to use a shield at all!
If you stack 50%buff duration the 10% move speed from counterattack perk feels amazing. Helps to close gaps better vs ranged and repositioning vs pve.
oh that's a great idea!! thanks
Make a part 2 with all the shield related things you didn't talk about :D
actually great idea. there's def enough stuff to fill another 30mins.. thanks!!
@@YourBoyBlinn Thanks to you for all your work, it helped me a lot :)
@@DamienCloud my pleasure dude, thanks for saying so!!
I like to think you the wide camera swings are simulations of pushing through the attack with your shield for instance if someone swings at you and you half heartedly block you are just smashing through your defense you have to do it with gumption
hey that's a really great and interesting way to think about it!!
@@YourBoyBlinn thanks 😊 I never really thought about it that way till recently and your video, also it kinda goes with the half block mechanic. i don't have much time into this game but I do love it and an so happy to have it back on steam. Do you ever play with subscribers
looking forward to some raids sometime!!
Can most of this apply to bard as well? They have buckler + lantern shield
yes and no.. yes in that both classes can use the shield, but no in that the fighter perks make counter-attacking MUCH faster and more viable. I the only non-fighter shield class I've messed around with has been cleric, and I found it very difficult to block and retaliate the same way I can on fighter. also, small shields are VERY hard to use to block!!

What matchups would you switch you mace for arming sword and vice versa
in general its armor vs not armor since mace gives armor pen, but it could also just be weapon matchup specific, like how mace is easier to parry with longsword
i love using the mace against the longsword. mostly this is because the common conception is that the mace is 'easy to parry' but I've got a technique where I swing wide to avoid the parry and then drag the mace back into the opponent's body. here's a clip that explains it: ruclips.net/video/sqwrDb---Es/видео.htmlsi=7QEUgEKijoZ4oUsI&t=379
other than that, my rule of thumb is that the mace is for medium+ armor, arming sword for cloth. the only exception is for slow-swinging two-handed weapons, where I like the arming sword better because the faster swing makes it easy to hit between enemy attacks.. in this case I'll use the arming sword even in the opponent has heavy armor -- hope that helps!!
perfect block perk is really only useful on longsword. taunt is a lot better in 1vX, but if you have decent PDR when your block is up, that extra 10% could put you into a new threshold. going from 40% to 50% or 50% to 60% is a pretty big gain.
one thing to watch for with hilt blocking is animations breaking and them hitting you through the shield. If their attack starts and you're too close, or the server is particularly icky that day, its just going to phase through the shield and you're getting hit. Desync in general this patch has been pretty bad which is unfortunate for shieldbros
I don't think you went into enough detail about predicting swings in a fight.

Doesn't the lantern shield have a counter-attack that would go through staggers, just like the longsword, though?
Nope lantern shield gets staggered a little before the riposte now. They forgot to mention that in their patch notes again.

Love your work dude! Question: Any particular reason why are you running arming sword as opposed to falchion?
falchion to me has always just felt sluggish. the arming sword is WAY faster and helps me get inside the attack swing timing of larger weapons (so I can go back to blocking & not trade). I also don't like the opening swing of the falchion combo, since it's pretty wide from the right. I found I ended up hitting walls/lamps in the heat of close-quarters combat. hope this helps shed some light!
Explains the shield view is huge, trying to explain to a friend new to th3 game that just blocking isn't enough is so hard . You have to aim the block
that's it! you gotta aim the block!!
When do use arming sword and the flanged mace, or even the morning star?
arming sword for opponents in cloth armor, or fast counter-attacks between the swings of large weapons. mace for heavily armored opponents!
@@YourBoyBlinnif I had to bring one only which do you recommend?
And which one is better PvE?
@@C-R. hmmmm I think if I could only choose one, my true love is the arming sword, just because it has the most balance between swing speed, damage, and diverse attack pattern. I'm super comfortable with it for clearing PvE and even though it has no armor pen, it attacks SUPER fast out of the counter-attack, and can be used effectively against armored opponents if you are patient enough. thanks for the question!!
Sorry for the ignorance, but as a fighter, how can you equip yourself with morning stars and bows? it does not allow me
theres a skill that lets you equip any weapon
never hurts to ask!! just use the perk "weapon mastery" and you'll get access to a bunch of other weapons & bows etc :)

that's it! every time something goes wrong is a chance to learn how to do it better next time :) thanks for your note & good luck out there!!
I will try it
nice, let me know how it goes!
What about spears i have the hardest time blocking spears.
spears is a good example of choosing your battles. get in close and duck/dodge the first 2 attacks.. the third attack is a juicy overhead that's WAAYYY easier to block :)
Thank you, i will def try that. Btw I love your content.
@@ogreman1000 awesome, thanks thanks!!
THATS WHY I DO SWORD AND BOARD OOOOOOOOOOOH
ooooh buddy, I know what you mean
@@matt-z5j haha yeah totally. never thought of the 50% action speed bonus as a means to help fighters chain fast blocks.. but of course! maybe it's because I always counter attack after the first block, I rarely try (or need) to chain multiple blocks together, but the situation you described makes good sense! thanks!!

President Burger says hello!!
I figured a lot of this stuff out by getting killed and reflecting on what happend. Sometimes melee is like a 2 second exchange and then you are dead. Thinking about suggesting PvP damage should be lowered by a certain % for everyone. I Think rouges would suffer from this though. They could make a new stat that adds +%pvp damage and even +%PvE damage too.
yeah took me a long time to piece all of this together, and you're right that reflecting on defeat is the best way to learn in this game!!
