Queensland’s Electric Tilt Train is the fastest as it holds the Australian speed record of 210km/h The prospector is the fastest in terms of average speed, it travels 653km in under 7hrs. In comparison it takes the XPT 10.5hrs to travel 877km XPT Is probably the second fastest in Australia (behind the tilt train) but the poor track condition in nsw means it rarely reaches 160km/h. Thankyou My daughter went on a school camp to Kalgoorlie, and was very nervous about the long train trip on the Prospector. Your video put her mind at ease and made her journey so much easier.
Driving up from Mandurah to Perth city you get an idea of how good the trains are on that line because the railway is between the two halves of the freeway. I just wanted to say how much I like to watch your Videos. As a High School Student who lives in Melbourne, When I do get to go film Trains, It's just the regular suburban or V/Line Trains and nothing too out of the ordinary. I've really wanted to travel on lots of Australia's Long-Distance Train Services like the Prospector. These Videos are great because I get to have a look at what the experiance is like and make a decision on weather I should go on this Train in the Future. Once Again, Thank You and I can't wait to see your reviews in the Future.
It’s interesting that you mention a long forgotten passenger service to Mullewa. It ran three nights per week between 1961 and 1974. I used the service once in 1972 to travel to Dalwallinu. Although it was only 300km it took the train nine hours to get there, hence the ironic nickname of the Mullewa Express. The rolling stock was pretty old dating from around the 1920s. It was even possible to travel on from Mullewa once a week to Meekatharra when they attached a passenger carriage to a goods train
Yes the 70's were a bad time for railways in WA. The Charles Court Liberal Government started the dissemination of the passenger services as a prelude to the dissolution of Branch Freight lines over the next 2 decades and beyond. This left only the 2 services of the Prospector ( a standard gauge rail service) and The Australind (a narrow gauge rail service) There used to be other mixed freight/passenger services to many parts of the Branch lines in the South West, but they were also cancelled. WA now has to use road freight for many of the bulk freight services such as grain and many minerals, thus putting a huge strain on the road networks in the country areas. The effort by subsequent Labor Governments to redress the metro passenger availability by increasing the reach to Mandurah and Yanchep has been a great progress for the people of Perth, but not for the people of the Country areas who also deserve a comparable service.
@skippymaster57 terrible period for passenger rail here in NSW too, I wish the railways one day become as important culturally and economically as they once were, so many country towns just die after they stop the passenger trains
Thanks for sharing.... Although I currently live in Melbourne, I was born in Kalgoorlie in 1943 so I have seen so many changes to the railway system in WA....the WAGR was always regarded as being the most efficient rail system in Australia.... always great to see updates in the train systems... cheers 😀
Did you ever catch the service to Albany? I was following some of the lines around and I was astounded at how far they went, and I’ve always wondered what it was like to be able to take the train down to Albany.
@caskadestudio yes I did catch the train from Perth to Albany and it was an overnight service back in 1959/60 ...I don't remember when that passenger service ceased & only continued as a commercial service....😀

I always travel with a earphone extender cable. In fact I use one on the computer at home. Also, WA looks a lot like upper Texas USA. With more shapely trees and less Texans.
WA is 3.9 times the size of Texas with just over 10% of the population. The northern third is in the tropics with summer temperatures up there regularly above 40°C for several months. Much of it is red desert. In the southern winter our north is wonderful. In the far south the "Rainbow Coast" is good for fishing and a place to cool off in summer. Snow is extremely rare here even in the coldest winters. Visitors go north in winter, south in summer. US, Chinese and European visitors try not to drive on the right hand side of the road too much.
Another excellent train review Rory - thanks :) I did this trip about 20 years ago, so good to see the new rolling stock. Agree that the Superpit is just AWESOME - I could not believe how big it was!
i took the prospector to Kalgoorlie in 2014 and worked there for 3 months. Brings back fond memories! Looks exactly the same 7 years on. I remembered trying to order a cappucino and was told they only have the basic coffee packets lol! Friendly staff though. Train wasnt fast but agree it was due to the tracks. Nice work Rory
Did this trip to Kalgoorlie and back to Perth next day in 2018. Really enjoyed the trip. My map and driver cam did work then. 🙂 It’s so sad that train travel in Aus is not what it used to be Would have loved to do Perth to Albany by train.
Thanks Rory for another well researched video. Though I don't travel much on regional trains, I find your videos interesting. The scenery is stunning too.
I remember taking the Prospector during my school days. Fanciest train I've ever ridden on. Also, the Mrs Mac's pie is a classic that I'm glad you enjoyed.
I did this journey about 12 years ago glad to see they have upgraded the seats. Back then all u got was a trey table and a communal tv on the roof that had the volume set to the minimum.
Interesting video. I did this trip a few months back and the train was full. (It wasn’t even school holidays). It’s a shame that the driver cam did not work for you. You mentioned that there are only two intra state trains, but there is also the Avon Link train which travels to Northam from Midland and the Avon Link which travels between Midland and Toodyay. Both trains have good free wifi.
Thank you, I know Avon link and Merredin link but they technically run on the same route as the Prospector , not like running to a different destination so I didn’t count them. Good to know that the Avon Link has wifi tho!
Thank you so much for your informative review. It has given me the confidence to travel to on the Prospector by myself to Kalgoorlie. Being a much older person I wasn’t sure if I could manage this. I’m confident now that I can. Thanks so much Rory. 👍
Thanks for visiting us over here Rory. It is like another country. Looks like a great trip and not bad time of year to see the green after our extra soggy winter. I’m not keen on Mrs Macs pies after a few bad ones, will have to give them another chance.
First top marks for encouraging that boys interest in the camera. Second I'm newly retired to Perth an been thinking of visiting Kalgoorlie and your video is great help.

G'day Rory, thank you for an awesome video. I thought it was nice that you let the little kid muck around/check out your camera. I enjoy watching your videos, they are informative and entertaining without being crammed with info. Good job Rory.
Great vid Rory. I agree with you - Mrs Macs pies are great. Surprised to see such good scenery on this train journey. Good to see that you get your own tv on the Prospector. Pity about the map and driver cam wasn't working. Look forward to your next vid.
Great video. Note, there are three country service, you forgot Avon Link. Not sure if the Australind is currently running, either. Had been replaced by buses for sometime due to old rolling stock.
transwa.wa.gov.au/updates/service-disruptions-details/artmid/1404/articleid/526/merredinlink-disruption Hi the Avon link is only cancelled for 2 days it’ll be running again from the 19th
Excellent video! Love the extra info, bits of trivia. I grew up in Gwalia, a ghost town north of Kalgoorlie (near Leonora). I’ve always been a train buff but never ridden the Prospector. Later we moved to Qld and I would take the train from boarding school from Rockhampton to Mackay, or Rocky to Nambour (depending on where I was going to be for holiday breaks). Ridden the subs/trains in Sydney and Brisbane. Currently I live in Anaheim, near Disneyland in California, where there is really no significant “decent” train service. I took a train from Chatsworth (the LA version) into downtown LA, to transfer to Anaheim. I had to wait 6 hours before the first Anaheim train left. This was 1996, it’s probably a bit better now, but still a deplorable system for such a large city. The NY subway (rode that in 1988) is truly an experience, but probably wouldn’t do that these days.
Thank you for a great review. Enjoyed all the extra information you provided. As a West Australian at least this is one train journey I can take the scenary looked amazing. Perth is a beautiful city to live it. Hope you got to see more of it.
Hi Rory, I went on the prospector last week. The same problems you found are still there on the entertainment system and no wifi as yet. But the food is still good and well priced
Good content mate, as a Perth born guy this was a good watch. Really like the stats and your general attention to detail. Think I might take my family on this run for a random weekend (didn't even search for this, just came up after watching a trams in Perth video), keep it up!
Wow, very original and interesting trainsploring. Brought back memories of Australia for sure. The vastness of the landscape never fails to excite, and look forward to more from!
Cool stuff. 👍 I was going to visit Perth a few weeks ago to make a video about The Australind to Bunbury but WA still hadn’t opened their borders to South Australia at the time (they since have) so I had to cancel and stay in SA instead. Planning to travel on both The Prospector and The Australind later this year but with border closures it’s hard to predict whether it will happen. 🤞🏽
Great video Rory as always! My partner and I now try to guess what food you're going to choose to eat from the menu in each of your videos. We got the soup and Tukka Tubz right for this one!
These rail cars are the second generation. The first served from 1971-2004. They were based on the US Budd RDC design. Some were power cars, some were trailer cars, and they were designed to run with as many rail cars as was needed. Seeing four connected at busy times was common.. I've only travelled on the "modern" Prospector once, but had travelled on its predecessor many times
Great video I love that part of WA with my journey with the Indian Pacific Boy you were very trusting to let that child handle your camera ! 😩 Great review on this train
Great video, glad you enjoyed Perth, not sure how you managed a G2G pass, but nevertheless glad you made it. Just one point there are two other regional services (4 in total), they use the same line, the MerredinLink to Merredin (no surprise), and the Avonlink to Northam, the two car sets used are the same as the prospector but have a different livery. A brand new Australind is promised with the rollout of new metro EMU's next year, the Australind will be a diesel version. The discontinued regional train services were replaced by 14 Transwa Road Coach services. .....Drew
Thank you for the information!! I wanted to travel on the Australind but the train was in maintenance and then service was replaced by a coach when I was there, good to know that it’ll be replaced!

Snow is extremely rare here even in the coldest winters. Visitors go north in winter, south in summer. US, Chinese and European visitors try not to drive on the right hand side of the road too much.
Very informative, and never boring. Thank you.
Another excellent train review Rory - thanks :) I did this trip about 20 years ago, so good to see the new rolling stock. Agree that the Superpit is just AWESOME - I could not believe how big it was!
Another awesome review glad you finally made it to Perth even though it’s another country 🤪
Reckon you made that kids day…so cute
WA. The best country in the country
i took the prospector to Kalgoorlie in 2014 and worked there for 3 months. Brings back fond memories! Looks exactly the same 7 years on. I remembered trying to order a cappucino and was told they only have the basic coffee packets lol! Friendly staff though. Train wasnt fast but agree it was due to the tracks. Nice work Rory
No mean feat getting over that border these days, glad you enjoyed the train ride to make it worthwhile!
Did this trip to Kalgoorlie and back to Perth next day in 2018. Really enjoyed the trip. My map and driver cam did work then. 🙂
It’s so sad that train travel in Aus is not what it used to be Would have loved to do Perth to Albany by train.
Well done Rory on another great review. If I'm ever in WA i will be sure to travel on this train.
I've never seen anything that is this indepth online ... ever! great job man 👍👍👍
Thats excellent Rory another great video. Would be interesting to see you looking around Kalgoorlie!
A superb effort, a well produced and informative video. Thank you for putting in the hard work, very much appreciated.
Thank you Anthony 😊
Interesting video. I did this trip a few months back and the train was full. (It wasn’t even school holidays).
It’s a shame that the driver cam did not work for you.
You mentioned that there are only two intra state trains, but there is also the Avon Link train which travels to Northam from Midland and the Avon Link which travels between Midland and Toodyay. Both trains have good free wifi.
Thank you, I know Avon link and Merredin link but they technically run on the same route as the Prospector , not like running to a different destination so I didn’t count them.
Good to know that the Avon Link has wifi tho!
Rory your excellent and cheerful reviews are very refreshing. Thank you.
THANX 4 GREAET VIDEO. I LIVED IN WA 1989-2007 ( KAL-PTH-LEINSTER-BUNBURY ..) NEVER BEEN IN A TRAIN. DONE EXTENSIVE TRAVEL & HOLIDAYS INC WILD NORT TO KAKADU. TRAIN LOOKS LIKE BOEING 787 :-))))
Great video, you got all the new interesting info from the trip in there and you definitely came at the best time of year and also just had record rains which made your trip so scenic 😁👌🌿🌱💧
That’s good to know 😂😎
G'day Rory, thank you for an awesome video. I thought it was nice that you let the little kid muck around/check out your camera.
I enjoy watching your videos, they are informative and entertaining without being crammed with info. Good job Rory.
Thank you 😊
Excellent video. LIKED the train journey
That was "Really " a great trip report Rory ! Thank you for the tips about the seats and the food... :):):)
Thank you for sharing it with us...:):):)
Thank you for sharing. It is so interesting about your train trip to Kalgoorlie.
These RoryDing train travel videos are excellent, the next best thing to personally experiencing it !!
Thank you Rory for such a great video review, I really did enjoy this one!!
Great work in getting in here Rory...but you shouldn't have told everyone about our great pies!! ('If it aint Mrs Macs, take it back!...lol)
Mrs macs pies are awesome
Chilli beef cheese Pies are dope 😋
Great vid Rory. I agree with you - Mrs Macs pies are great. Surprised to see such good scenery on this train journey. Good to see that you get your own tv on the Prospector. Pity about the map and driver cam wasn't working. Look forward to your next vid.
Great job, Rory. Very informative. Thank you very much.
keep doing these vids man i love watching them keep it up
I drive this line almost daily and yet you taught me so much! Thanks pal!
Absolutely fantastic and comprehensive review. I look forward to doing this ride and the Ghan soon. Thank you so much, thumbs up and a new subscriber
Thank you for subscribing!!! And enjoy the Ghan! 😁😁
Thank you, it was very informative and interesting! 💖
awesome work rory
super nice documentation. i was 7 years ago in WA for a roadtrip. Its always interesting what kind of trains are existing on this earth.
Great video. Note, there are three country service, you forgot Avon Link. Not sure if the Australind is currently running, either. Had been replaced by buses for sometime due to old rolling stock.
transwa.wa.gov.au/updates/service-disruptions-details/artmid/1404/articleid/526/merredinlink-disruption
Hi the Avon link is only cancelled for 2 days it’ll be running again from the 19th
Love this video......Rory is so thorough.....
What a great video. Hollywood level production 😅 👏👏👏
You do a fantastic job with these videos!
Thanks, Rory! I have bought a ticket on the Prospector Train to Kalgoorlie after watching yr video. :)
Watching your videos reminds me of my many train 🚆 journeys TY so much
Great work recruiting new Aussie cinematographers
The very great state Of WA. My home, such a beautiful city
Great video Rory. Haven't been on this route since the late 70s, must do it again.
Another amazing video Roy!
Great video. One can only hope more people will use this service!
Wonderful video as usual. Your research into the local areas, conditions and rail stock is magnificent. Always entertaining and well presented.
Thank you. Great video. I learn a lot. Keep the videos coming.
Nice video mate well done 👍😊🇦🇺
Good job 😂😂
Yeah I always get a hot meal 😁
Love this and the way you present your vlogs☺
These rail cars are the second generation. The first served from 1971-2004. They were based on the US Budd RDC design. Some were power cars, some were trailer cars, and they were designed to run with as many rail cars as was needed. Seeing four connected at busy times was common.. I've only travelled on the "modern" Prospector once, but had travelled on its predecessor many times
Great video I love that part of WA with my journey with the Indian Pacific Boy you were very trusting to let that child handle your camera ! 😩 Great review on this train
As a Perth guy who lives in Los Angeles, This video is absolutely legit.
great video mate was looking forward to the next one perfect!!!
Hoping to be on this in late October.Great review
Luv the enthusiasm!
I wanted to travel on the Australind but the train was in maintenance and then service was replaced by a coach when I was there, good to know that it’ll be replaced!
thanks mate, Perth resident and found this very interesting.
