I believed what I was told when I took this VW Passat in Part Exchange against one of my Cars. Rookie Mistake! Check out Tool Mania UK here - www.ebay.co.uk...
I have worked on VW's as a main dealer tech for 19 years. The noises can come and go but will get worse as time goes on. I suspect they took it in for a service and asked about the noise, and got a shock when the garage told them what was wrong and how much to fix it. So they thought they better get shot! The noise is caused by a warn duel mass flywheel and as you know they move from side to side. When they wear they can get stuck against one of the stop limits and becomes unbalanced and knock against the stop. So stopping and starting it quickly can cause it to stick. It could free off again and not make a noise for ages or keep doing it every now and then. Great channel by the way and love watching you.

@@kech9496 I didn’t say that. I watch him too! For the Zafira he needs a wind back tool as the rear pistons need to rotate back not be pushed back. Would like the tool Ray has though 😁
Nothing wrong with VW and DSG. I have a 2007 Passat with 230k on the clock and flawless wet clutch DSG. Needs a DSG oil and filter gearbox service every 40k which it gets, and costs £189 from the dealer which is reasonable in my opinion (I do ALL other servicing and work myself). It is the ones that are not looked after properly that have the problems.
@@MiracleMitch W,e have owned 5 DSG cars in the last 14 years, never gone wrong on us, with proper servicing they go on for miles. What we are talking about is a Dual Mass Flywheel problem, not a DSG problem. DMF failures are just as prevalent on manuals so why is everyone blaming the DSG? or am I missing something here? Please educate me if DMFs on DSG boxes are more troublesome.
In Finland, diesel car with 160k miles is just runned in :) We have ridiculously high car taxing which might be the reason for people driving older diesel cars regurlarly to over 320k miles...
Based solely on the MOT history I'd buy that car in a flash, as long as the tyres are a decent brand. Always a good correlation between quality of the tyres and the maintenance that's been done, especially in the more expensive tyre sizes.
I had a similar experience with a 2.0tdi leon dsg (same engine). Everything was fine on the test drives and then on the way home but the next day the noise started when it was cold. Stripped it down and found the last owner had a new LUK flywheel fitted but the garage missed the pilot bearing out of the crank. New pilot bearing from Seat was about £30 from memory and it was fine after that.
In general i mean mate, giving them £200 for new alloys is just madness. There has been few where you give more than book price. You need to say 'no' more lol
Same here. About 2 years ago the heater core in my car went out and I was told it would cost at least $1,000 to replace it. I chose to have it bypassed and that still cost $200. A year later, thinking that I would want the heater/defroster for trips up north, I spent the $1,000 to repair a car probably worth all of twice that when sorted. I traded the car 6 months later, but with a clear conscience, of sorts. The car was going to need new tires in 6-8 months, but if a dealership appraiser couldn't see that...
I didn’t at a slightly sketchy garage fuel gauge gone and power steering rack leaking. It was a Volvo service history 149k I jet washed the power steering fluid and traded it and the car was well looked after and they loved it. Nothing was every said about the faults
They 100% knew, it's so loud it must have been getting like that progressively for a while, that's why it's hard to do customers favours and discount a car so they can afford it as you need to make up for these shaftings.
Bloody hell James, a friend of a friend you say crikey they obviously knew about it a pulled ya pants down, I'd be having a quiet word with your 'friend'!
To be fair the car could easily have rattled like a bucket when he brought it to you but obviously it didnt . It is very unfortunate and I do feel for you mate.
We have the same on a Passat with 277k. It has a death sentence but it has gone on for another year. When it goes car will be scrapped. 100% that is the DMF. Ours sounds exactly the same and it's intermittent. I genuinely believe if they weren't mechanically minded, they wouldn't know! They are very quiet engines from the inside. Not many people could hear the difference unless you're interested.
The joys of being a car dealer where the punter toe drops a car on you! Had this a few times over the years I’ve been trading. The Punters who do this usually turn out to be a complete nightmare under warranty on the car you’ve sold them as well!!!
You can buy tools to sharpen drill bits, which should extend their life considerably ... It also tends to be the regular sizes that go blunt out of a set of drill bits, so you end up with multiples of sharp unwanted bits ! My other observation is that buying a few high quality individual bits for the sizes that you actually use works out to be cost effective, although it seems very expensive at the time of purchase ... (I still have various partial sets of cheaper bits that I haven't got around to getting rid of, despite the fact that I never use them, being the 'wrong' sizes ...)
I’ve bought a Citroen Jumper (Relay) which also shot the flywheel a week after I bought it. Just broke when I stood stationary in front of a traffic light. Turned out they replaced the clutch 2 months prior but didn’t change the flywheel. Weird choices they make sometimes..
If the previous owner wasn't mechanically minded then they might have just ignored it if the sound went away again. It's possible they didn't even notice it. I know that's hard to believe but some people just don't hear these things.
I had a customer who has the same car with the same noise, its now been like that for 4 years and still going strong, not easy to sell with the noise I would use it as a run around as is, still a handy vehicle,
I have a audi TT with a dsg box and yes it's the DMF, mine does the same until the engine is warmed up then it stops making that noise. The DMF on a DSG box is a complicated thing to replace your looking at around £1000, they knew I'm sure
So you get the same noise but the car still drives fine? Is the noise an indication of impending failure or just a noise that could be irritating once you are aware of it?
@@richardhaywoodh I've had the TT for a year now it's the 3.2 V6 , it's basically I time bomb ready to let go and once it goes it has a good chance it will smash the gearbox up . The car only comes out on sunny days so I will get it done next year the cost is £1500 ish and yes it drives fine without any problems
These are good cars when well maintained. The DSG gearbox needs regular fluid changes to remain trouble free (this car should have had at least 3). I have a saloon version and it's a brilliant car although build quality is not what it once was. How do people manage to get cloth seats in that much of a mess? I would sell it on 'sold as seen'.
He can't sell it as 'sold as seen' as a trader though, the term means nothing selling it on as a trader, same rules apply. This is why most traders are not doing sub 1k cars anymore.
@@JakeTheTrouserSnake He can but he wouldn't be able to advertise as his business or receive the potential customers at his business. Because buyers could then claim it was offered as sold by the business meaning he would still be liable. He would have to register it in his own name (insure it in his own name as a consequence), advertise it in his own name (on eBay or the like) and receive the potential buyers anywhere but at his business which would likely be at his home. Otherwise a costly legal struggle could follow which he ultimately couldn't win.
A dealer did it to me! Same fault on an Octavia VRS DSG. The warrantee doesn't cover it as its a wear item. I didn't hear it as it only made the noise for the first 1 to 2 min on a dead cold start which I obviously only got to hear a couple of days later at home. You do business as it should be done but I think your the only one! I often think your too soft but its a business model that should ensure repeat custom and recommendations. Thats terrible, nothings wear n tear than early on, clearly and existing fault that makes it not fit for purpose, Id of had a small claim in court sooo fast
The way you describe the struggles and the money and the issues a trader has has really opened my eyes to the industry to be fair. And thinking about it the person trading you that passant is a seller in theory. So he should sell his car to you against the 500 with the same morals that the 500 is sold to him. If the 500 goes wrong he will be straight back. KNOWING he's lost you a grand on the passant.not a way to live that.

Mother in-law had a DMF go on their car, they didn't want to fix, traded it in BUT DID tell the dealer and let him listen to it. Dealer was happy, still gave them a great price considering the fault.
Back in the late seventies I part exchanged my Austin 1300 at a dealers for a 1971 Capri 1600. The Austin 1300 smoked like a chimney first thing in the morning but was ok for the rest of the day so I thought I would let the dealer face the embarrassment when he started it in front of a customer. He got the last laugh, the Capri even though mechanically it was ok was 20 tins of P38 isopon flying in close formation. Ended up fitting new wings, front Ballance and rear wheel arches but in the end I had a good car but it was the dealer who got the last laugh.😁
Hi I’ve first come across a DMF when I bought a vauxhall Corsa for my wife running great for two weeks and then bang all of a sudden this noise which turned out to be a dual mass flywheel , so I thinking it’s possible like I was told by independent people that they can just let go! I went 25% with the dealer he paid the rest for the repair. The second time I came across this problem was after buying a Honda CR-V and driving home to Hull from Leeds where I purchased it from a dealer the clutch was slipping that bad it would hardly move . I ring the dealer he said he’ll fix it bring it back , I replied it won’t get that far ! So he said get it fixed and he’ll pay fair enough I thought. I tuck it to Honda and the problem was the DMF ! And £1700 bill ! He refused to pay but after 8 months and just the day before going to court he paid up especially as the Honda dealerships found out the brakes were defective! Ps Its just passed it’s mot again and I’ve had it for over 23 years so I can’t complain 😀😀👍 PPS you don’t have a host at the mo but with the MGBGT etc you’ll need one especially in the future? So why don’t you extend your knowledge and whip it out and fix it, it’s quite easy and you’ll love the feeling when you’ve fixed it, the kit should be roundabout the 3 to £400 and a big selling point with it all new , which ever way you go I wish you all the best because your a rare honestly guy 👍👍😀
Duel mass fly wheel gone in a big way . Not to hard to fit can be done . comes complete with some kits fly wheel and clutch all in one . Or put in a standard fly wheel for cheaper option plenty driving around with dmf swapped out . You did get done over as this will have been like this for a while !
Shocking big man. You've been done. You'll be a right few quid getting a new dual mass flywheel into that. Straight to auction. Maybe one of your trade contacts or a subscriber that's into VW's would give you what it owes you?
Had an 18plate 1.6TDi with DSG out of the company car pool a year ago. 50k on it, had been sat for a year so it had done 25k per year with main dealer servicing (and the box oil had been done). Within 3 months of me having it the DSG got fussy wouldn't select all gears, took it in for a service, gearbox leaking oil (considerably), Oil change and all the consumables and 3 days later and they could only get it to select 3rd and 7th... Master tech then unplugged the electronics and plugged them back in and hey presto. £1200 bill. Then the Cruise control radar went tits up. £300 to recalibrate. Good cars, solid and dependable, eats up the miles on the motorway and it's almost as comfortable as my old MK4 Mondeo, I quite like it as a company car but I wouldn't spend my own money on one.
The torque converter has a large wire c-clip holding it together and when they get a few miles on them the c-clip pops off and causes a tin plate to rattle on and off, easy job you just open the c-clip out and then pop it back in,thats the rattle it makes when it pops out
@@ChopsGarage did a vw golf the same noise was on and off,on tickover it chattered away but not all the time,it holds a round tin plate in the torque converter.Thats why they've P/x'd it.
Sent you a video, if it is this its early stages, the start stop ones are cheaper , my cc 2.0 tdi went with no warning, if you buy parts £500 plus £200 to do, new clutch flywheel and other bits
Best check for dmf is to listen at the rear of the near side front wheel, clattering there is dmf. You can also get those sorts of noises from the aux belt side of things with failing alternator free wheel / tensioner
Hi James if its got the flappy paddles on the steering wheel .. you is looking at about £2500 for the DSG to be repaired / Dual Mass flywheel replacement ...happened to a mate that has a Pissat sounded the same as yours ...
Mate, you are seriously way too kind! Kind people don't make good business people. Well not unless the business is a smokescreen for tax write-off's that is. You've been well and truly done over here. Firstly, Pay no more than 50% of the trade in's value, what with mechanical and electrical troubles, you could be stuck with that car for a very long time. Admittedly, VW's do have a tendency to fail gradually, rather than just going 'pop' and my suspicion is that the noise was getting worse so the customer wanted to be rid ASAP. I had a Skoda Octavia TDI estate with a Dual mass. £1200 replacement for clutch, DMF and to change fluids in the gearbox. That was 10 years ago and on a manual. DSG's are way more complicated and need the plugin diagnostics to re-calibrate the clutch servo's and get a smooth gear change. In my opinion, It's a BCA car, 1300 quid at best, especially with over 150k on the clock.
I thought the DSG box issue was an urban myth.... but I’ve read soooo many tales that these are trouble even on well maintained cars. Trade it, spares or repair, not worth fixing for sure.
They like proper servicing dsg, and for London I would not run one out of warranty as creeping with brake part on in traffic is what prematurely wears the clutch packs. Other than that treat the car well service it properly don’t Over heat the gearbox and they are find had them at work and ragged then and bought my own this year
You say that they seemed genuine enough, but because of this, these people are exactly the type who continually get away with ripping others off. Over the years, like most people I’ve bought cars from private sellers and it’s always the nice middle class ones who invites you in for a coffee and a chat that are the most fraudulent. Like you I am an honest person but I now unashamedly beat people down on price to ensure any so-called unforeseen faults are covered in the lower price that I pay and if they don’t want to sell for that, then, I walk away as it’s always been the case of - buyer be aware.
Tow bar, second rear number plate, seller saying vw electrics and roof bars!!!! Warning bells as it's been used to tow a caravan big time!! Hopefully you will not make a loss, fingers crossed.
I had a noise very similar appear on my car (not a VW group) it was the bottom pulley with harmonic damper breaking up. Easy to check even if it is not that.... I am an optimist... I think it is the flywheel though...
In future I wouldn't give anywhere near book on the high mileage stuff. Lessons to be learned here mate. I'd personally get it fixed. Retail on this is £4500-£5000
Just discovered channel and subscribed . My last skoda superb flywheel started rattling when cold and didn’t get any worse for another 50k and beyond after I sold it
Part of the problem is garages/mechanics who tell their customers that x part is on the way out, it’ll be expensive and their better off getting rid of it. I was told exactly that with a Mk3 Mondeo I had when the injectors and DMF were on the way out.
i find snap on way too brittle I can snap them with ease without even trying, and I'm not that strong it's nice that the snapon man swaps them for free, but I've moved to halfords professional ones which are also no questions asked swappable and as yet in 2 years i have not snapped one dropped one down a manhole and had to retrieve it though
I had the same noises from my Citroen rely van many years ago. Thought the dual mass flywheel was the diagnosis same as you. Was quoted about £1200 to replace flywheel and clutch etc, but stuck with it, carried on using the van while I was saving up the money to put it right, but the noise went away! ! Still have the vehicle , it's still working well on the factory clutch and flywheel. Whatever caused the noise I have no idea, but I guess I've been lucky that it didn't develop into something bad. If I'd have taken it straight to the garage for a fix I'd be £1200 down for no reason. Think I was lucky and dodged a bullet there.
That Passat is a real bummer, I feel for you. Don’t let your head go down, you really seem an honest guy and I would hope your part ex punter is the same. The proof of the pudding will be if he rocks up with the receipts - let’s wait and see. When funds allow I think you need an old boy to help out with bits and pieces around the unit who would put a couple of shifts a week in for spending money. Working by yourself all day and every day would get me down but I guess we are all different aren’t we? Still enjoying the chanel and telling all my pub chums about it…..
I feel for you……I had a similar thing done to me recently. You only knew you had an issue when you drove the car for approximately 1 hour! I called the previous garage who serviced the car and the Garage told me the customer had been notified of the issue with the Auto Gearbox. So if they have just spent loads of money servicing the car including a Timing belt change and gearbox service….I’d call the previous garage. I managed to get Lawgistics on the case…..long story short! I rejected the part exchange back……the General public can be the worst. Good luck fella.
I recorded the call made to the main agents who serviced the car and knew about the gearbox issue…….and when the customer called me a couple of days later via Autotrader (The calls are recorded automatically) I confronted him about the issue and he sort of admitted to it. I passed all that information onto Lawgistics who done the rest! I think when you get legal advice and that email pops into your inbox and the letter drops on your door mat! It gets your ass twitching! The General public can’t keep getting away with passing there Crap onto genuine dealers who are out to make an honest living.
The dsg service on these doesn't include the gearbox filter in the VW spec. If the flywheel is that noisy get rid asap mate. I recently had one that needed the mecatronic unit & also a new gearbox, VW said over 14k to fix it!
My vito 638 dual mass flywheel very intermittently knocked since I bought it. When i say very intermittently I mean it, like sometimes at idle it would over times it wouldn't didn't matter what the temperature or how long it ran or anything. Then one day about a year and a half later the flywheel itself split into 2 (when released clutch would just spin the inner part) Fit a new clutch kit and it's been fine ever since with no noise. so yes they can intermittently make a noise.
Used around town maybe, motorway miles is much easier on all components....my current 2017 mondeo is on 130k my last I sold at 180k on the original clutch. Didn't even have a set of front discs until 150k
They probably never thought much off it as the car running ok and the sound was coming and going just bad luck it wasn't there when you done the deal 🤔
Life experience tells me and never fails, if people are over friendly my alarm bells ring, it maybe weeks even years but they always end up being a-holes
Across the group there has been numerous case reports on extremely expensive repairs with quite little mileage and not old but more near new so whilst some may last well a very significant amount most certainly don’t.
James . Stick the passat back through auction and minus fees may break even on the PX. Sadly I would suspect most punters are selling because they've grown tired of the car and not maintained it anyway as it's become unloved, or developed a not worth the cost fix.
I had a Zafira 1.9 CDTi that had exactly the same DMF chatter, the noise came and went for thousands of miles. It never caused a problem but it was annoyingly loud sometimes.
It’s knackered! These are popular with people who pull caravans and they work hard. Who goes from a car that size to a Fiat 500? He probably have that up for sale now for more than he paid for it. In future don’t take anything that old and with that mileage in as a trade in. He could have got rid at we buy any car and may have tried but when it was started up it made the noise.
After spending all that money on a major service why give up when the dual mass started rattling? The Passat is an excellent mile muncher. Maybe if it was a manual gearbox they would have been more inclined to fix and keep. Many mechanics have an opinion on DSG and the family could have been spooked. I've got the same car, a 170 techsport with 206k miles. Manual gearbox. It has original: Dpf and egr Dmf and clutch Full fuel system Turbo Engine. All original from 2011! It is now regen every 180 miles so the filter is going to be full soon. The secret to a long lived dmf is avoiding sub 2k revs cruising and holding onto each year a bit longer. If you cruise sub 2k revs and change to a higher gear as quickly as possible for MPG (like the DSG wants to) They rattle themselves to death otherwise. I also turn stop start off religiously.
Just wait till they come back with a warranty issue on the car you sold to them. Say "I can't fix that, still have your PeX, glad to reverse the deal!". 😆
James, suck it up,get it fixed, ask £4995 for it and use it as your new company driver, warrant it for 6mths with your own warranty, car looks great, remember some deals are diamonds some deals are stones!!!!
I have worked on VW's as a main dealer tech for 19 years. The noises can come and go but will get worse as time goes on.
I suspect they took it in for a service and asked about the noise, and got a shock when the garage told them what was wrong and how much to fix it. So they thought they better get shot!

When they wear they can get stuck against one of the stop limits and becomes unbalanced and knock against the stop. So stopping and starting it quickly can cause it to stick. As a mechanic I really appreciate your videos, you clearly show the challenges we face dealing with cars, there's a lot of dishonesty in people.
What we are talking about is a Dual Mass Flywheel problem, not a DSG problem. DMF failures are just as prevalent on manuals so why is everyone blaming the DSG? or am I missing something here? Please educate me if DMFs on DSG boxes are more troublesome.
Hopefully after a bad day this may make you smile..As soon as any small Korean hatchback goes by me now I automatically think of your channel😂
In Finland, diesel car with 160k miles is just runned in :) We have ridiculously high car taxing which might be the reason for people driving older diesel cars regurlarly to over 320k miles...
Yes but that's reliable engine / gearboxes like Peugeot 2.0 HDi when serviced right.
Denmark is worse by tax. Normal mercedes 2000/2005 not uncommen to see 500000 to 750000km on the clock. Passat around 400000 to 500000km
0000
Based solely on the MOT history I'd buy that car in a flash, as long as the tyres are a decent brand. Always a good correlation between quality of the tyres and the maintenance that's been done, especially in the more expensive tyre sizes.
I'm surprised he guys daughter needed to use a roof rack in London, I think he was giving you a load of flannel.
I thought the same, definitely a load of bollox lol
I know a lot of people who go to coast to surf, it’s not a central London car but the suburbs yes
Hi James congratulations on reaching over 22,000 subscribers and well done for all your hard work once again
You're just too nice James! Need to start giving people book prices. Your running a business not a charity mate
That was £600 less than book mate, book was £2800
In general i mean mate, giving them £200 for new alloys is just madness. There has been few where you give more than book price. You need to say 'no' more lol
I wouldnt have the balls to trade in a car with a known big fault. Times and people are changing for the worse.
Hi mate,
That could be the original clutch and it’s just gone. My latest private hire Octavia 2.0tdi did 210k on the original clutch.
Good luck
Mick
Get the Passat done and keep it for yourself. Move the Caddy van on then you have a load lugger and a family car in the shape of the Passat.
Clever Idea.
That's what I'd do, then when it dies sell it for scrap or parts. Maybe the push he needs to sell the van ;)
Id do this too. Do the gearbox keep it maintained and you'll get 100k mile more easy.
Disc brake piston Wind back tool should be on your purchase list as well @ Chops Garage :-)
They 100% knew, it's so loud it must have been getting like that progressively for a while, that's why it's hard to do customers favours and discount a car so they can afford it as you need to make up for these shaftings.
Quite right!
Another brilliant video again as always and that’s brilliant you have sold another car well done
Thanks 👍
I loved the little story at the beginning with a little daughter.
So sorry for the loss of your dog, they become part of us :(
The joys of being a car dealer where the punter toe drops a car on you! Had this a few times over the years I’ve been trading. The Punters who do this usually turn out to be a complete nightmare under warranty on the car you’ve sold them as well!!!
Yea the bloody nerve
Wonder if they’ll come back for any warranty work on the 500
I'd say keep this in mind when considering doing any good will gestures
It's part of the sales contract.
Hes probably cancelled there warranty 😂😂
I had a customer who has the same car with the same noise, its now been like that for 4 years and still going strong, not easy to sell with the noise I would use it as a run around as is, still a handy vehicle,
You can drive on a rattly flywheel for ages it’s just a bit of a gamble.
Nah, had mine done £600
These are good cars when well maintained. The DSG gearbox needs regular fluid changes to remain trouble free (this car should have had at least 3). I have a saloon version and it's a brilliant car although build quality is not what it once was. How do people manage to get cloth seats in that much of a mess? I would sell it on 'sold as seen'.
He can't sell it as 'sold as seen' as a trader though, the term means nothing selling it on as a trader, same rules apply. This is why most traders are not doing sub 1k cars anymore.
Surely he could "purchase" and sell it as a private citizen instead? There's always a way around these things.
Regardless of a fluid change, you can't help dual mass flywheel wearing.
BTW you can do the job for just over £300 in parts on jack stands. Not easy but not too bad either. At 167k I wouldn't like to guess how long the clutch packs have left in them especially if its been towing and there not cheap. Love the channel, keep doing what your doing!
Another brilliant video, not worth the hassle with the more complicated cars, stick to the simple ones👍
Drill Bits can all be sharpened on a grinder (off hand not an angle grinder). After many years in the Aircraft Industry I still get a buzz from showing people how. Bob (Somerset)
Hi, yes I sharpen everything on my bench grinder - garden shears, chisels, lawn mower blades, scissors, secerturs, drill bits, axes, kitchen knives, screwdriver blades, masonry drills, cleaning up hammer heads, and much much more.😀
Definitely knew about it when part ex it in. Keeps coming back so I bet they did. Sorry to hear about that and I’d say auction it. Sorry to hear about your dog too 😔
trust should be earned and not assumed at face value. valuable lesson
Mother in-law had a DMF go on their car, they didn't want to fix, traded it in BUT DID tell the dealer and let him listen to it. Dealer was happy, still gave them a great price considering the fault.
I could hear the stress in your voice mate as you told the story.
Ended up fitting new wings, front Ballance and rear wheel arches but in the end I had a good car but it was the dealer who got the last laugh.😁
in America they say 160,000 is low milage, park it up till you get your ramp
DMF's can fail quickly If they throw a rivet or a spring. Fingers crossed its nothing too drastic.
Another class vid James 👍
Thanks buddy!!
Ps Its just passed it’s mot again and I’ve had it for over 23 years so I can’t complain 😀😀👍
PPS you don’t have a host at the mo but with the MGBGT etc you’ll need one especially in the future? So why don’t you extend your knowledge and whip it out and fix it, it’s quite easy and you’ll love the feeling when you’ve fixed it, the kit should be roundabout the 3 to £400 and a big selling point with it all new , which ever way you go I wish you all the best because your a rare honestly guy 👍👍😀
I have a few US Pro tools, ratchets etc and have been impressed by them. Good tools and great value.
Us pro tools are great, my go to when buying tools
The torque converter has a large wire c-clip holding it together and when they get a few miles on them the c-clip pops off and causes a tin plate to rattle on and off, easy job you just open the c-clip out and then pop it back in,thats the rattle it makes when it pops out
But on and off noise would it not be constant? Where does it live?
@@ChopsGarage did a vw golf the same noise was on and off,on tickover it chattered away but not all the time,it holds a round tin plate in the torque converter.Thats why they've P/x'd it.
Sent you a video, if it is this its early stages, the start stop ones are cheaper , my cc 2.0 tdi went with no warning, if you buy parts £500 plus £200 to do, new clutch flywheel and other bits
Hi. Love the channel.
Drill bit advice, drill slower and use cutting oil. In my experience, heat will blunt the bits faster than anything
Thanks for the info!
Your mate got ripped off its £800 job
@@leedstown Not when you have to change the G. Box it aint ... Changing a Dual Mass Flywheel Clutch is approx £800 .. But its a DSG .. Box ... !!!!!
They would have known about the box probably changed oil to hide the noise
That's a great eBay shop glad I watched this video just for that
Glad was of value!
State of those front seats should tell you it’s not been looked after. If you’re prepared to sit in shit then beware the rest of the vehicle.
Gutted that you’ve been stitched up James. You gave them £200 extra to buy alloy wheels and they do this. You deserve better James.
Have a go at a few mazda 3s... they seem like an ideal upgrade from a small hatch.
The stains on the passenger seat are like something out of a CSI episode
Tow bar, second rear number plate, seller saying vw electrics and roof bars!!!! Warning bells as it's been used to tow a caravan big time!!
Hopefully you will not make a loss, fingers crossed.
I had a noise very similar appear on my car (not a VW group) it was the bottom pulley with harmonic damper breaking up. Easy to check even if it is not that.... I am an optimist... I think it is the flywheel though...
In future I wouldn't give anywhere near book on the high mileage stuff. Lessons to be learned here mate. I'd personally get it fixed. Retail on this is £4500-£5000
Not with that millage and it's the old shape model. I wouldn't give £4k even with 90k on it.
@@chrishart8548 good luck
£5k that age and milage 😂 I have a 2009 2.0tdi 140 jetta with 110k you can have it for £1500
@Mark Williams when it reaches 200k you won't be able to give the thing away.
Clueless lot of you. You find me a 62 plate Passat tdi170 DSG estate for under 4.5k. You set of clowns.
I would guess that they were well aware of the issue. I would just offer very low prices on px in future!
Just discovered channel and subscribed . My last skoda superb flywheel started rattling when cold and didn’t get any worse for another 50k and beyond after I sold it
Thanks for the sub!
Part of the problem is garages/mechanics who tell their customers that x part is on the way out, it’ll be expensive and their better off getting rid of it. I was told exactly that with a Mk3 Mondeo I had when the injectors and DMF were on the way out.
The VAG DSG can be Hestitant&Temperamental at lights&roundabouts.
Snap On never let me down!
i find snap on way too brittle I can snap them with ease without even trying, and I'm not that strong it's nice that the snapon man swaps them for free, but I've moved to halfords professional ones which are also no questions asked swappable and as yet in 2 years i have not snapped one dropped one down a manhole and had to retrieve it though
They were overcharging you anyway. Even Citroen dealer would be around £800!!
Haha very lucky mate 👍🍀
That Passat is a real bummer, I feel for you. Don’t let your head go down, you really seem an honest guy and I would hope your part ex punter is the same. The proof of the pudding will be if he rocks up with the receipts - let’s wait and see.
When funds allow I think you need an old boy to help out with bits and pieces around the unit who would put a couple of shifts a week in for spending money. Working by yourself all day and every day would get me down but I guess we are all different aren’t we?
Still enjoying the chanel and telling all my pub chums about it…..

@@patrickjm3487 watch the video before this. His dogs health was not good, and had to make very hard decision for any pet owner.
Oh interesting I thought we had no rights against the consumer
I recorded the call made to the main agents who serviced the car and knew about the gearbox issue…….and when the customer called me a couple of days later via Autotrader (The calls are recorded automatically) I confronted him about the issue and he sort of admitted to it. I passed all that information onto Lawgistics who done the rest! I think when you get legal advice and that email pops into your inbox and the letter drops on your door mat! It gets your ass twitching! The General public can’t keep getting away with passing there Crap onto genuine dealers who are out to make an honest living.
That's a good idea,
The dsg service on these doesn't include the gearbox filter in the VW spec. If the flywheel is that noisy get rid asap mate. I recently had one that needed the mecatronic unit & also a new gearbox, VW said over 14k to fix it!
Your too nice James.
Sounded exactly like that sound as well
Car with 160000+ miles, is going to need plenty of replacement parts due to age and mileage, not really worth messing about with.
Used around town maybe, motorway miles is much easier on all components....my current 2017 mondeo is on 130k my last I sold at 180k on the original clutch. Didn't even have a set of front discs until 150k
My Passat was a taxi and I sold it with 190,000 still on original clutch flywheel and pretty much everything else.
Caveat Emptor and how many times do motor trade screw over customers. Hard lesson learned.
Needs a new clutch pack, flywheel and fluid - £600 to sort if you're feeling brave and can charge a premium stating it's been done.
So working for free you mean? It amazes me with all the “internet negotiators” these days you think you can make a grand of this car.
@@Mark-vn7et Where did I say a set figure? Give your head a wobble.
They probably never thought much off it as the car running ok and the sound was coming and going just bad luck it wasn't there when you done the deal 🤔

It can of developing the fault has you got it, who knows, don't stress over it 👍
If you had bought this from auction would you have any comeback?
Oh interesting
It’s knackered! These are popular with people who pull caravans and they work hard.
Who goes from a car that size to a Fiat 500?
He probably have that up for sale now for more than he paid for it.
In future don’t take anything that old and with that mileage in as a trade in.
He could have got rid at we buy any car and may have tried but when it was started up it made the noise.
Which is bad as a DSG should not be used to tow anything for any length of time.
I'm surprised you gave so much for this car with that amount of miles you are taking a chance its not a lemon
It has original:
Dpf and egr
Dmf and clutch
Full fuel system
Turbo
Engine.
Put it in gear if noise goes then def, dual mass. it is a common fault.
I've got a few us pro tools. I'm delighted with them.
