Im upgrading from Diawa to Avet...that said I've used the Diawa Saltist 30 last season here in San Diego and got to see a few Avet reels...Young man win the Jackpot using a Avet SX.. I never used a lever drag but I'm going to get the Avet SX 5.3 M.C. for yellowtail this summer..Thank you for this video as using a lever drag looks very simple and easy..good job
Lol I'm getting it from Squidco here in San Diego in person as they're only 12 mi from my house..Plus they will fill the reel with 50lb spectre with a 25-30yrd topshot of 25lb mono at no extra charge (free)...but thx anyway, :)
So I have always used reels with level winds and am interested in switching to lever drag reels. I have a few possibly dumb questions but, please forgive me as I am a newcomer to these reel types. Do you use your thumb evenly spool your line when retrieving? How does this come into play when handling big game on larger lever drag reels? I would very much appreciate some feedback. Also, I love your videos man! Keep up the good work!
@floridafishingo You need to determine what # you would like to set the drag at. Then with line on the reel and the reel on the rod, tie the line to a scale. You need 2 people to do this. don't try it yourself! One person holds the scale while the other pulls up gently on the rod. If the drag is too tight, ease back on it, or if there is not enough drag, increase it. I hope this helps.
Works great although it ruclips.net/user/postUgkxLoZpKHn4w7dtzXk1eygBlOhbLxuVe3uD took a while to figure out how to reverse it. Nearly disassembled the entire thing. Looks better than my Redington Rise 5/6 reel too.
hello @jandhtackle, i recently switch from a star drag to a lever drag. I got me a penn fathom fth60ldhs that has the free, 1, 2, 3, strike, full, and sunset settings on it. when im casting it i usually have my thumb on the spool to prevent it from bird nesting but it doesnt really work out unless i do it with the star drag. I'm wondering when im casting it from free position, do i need to lift the lever up for more tension so it doesnt bird nest? i am also a shore casting guy.
wow thanks for writing back so fast. What avet would you reccomend for sharks off a pier? I really want a avet but they cost a good bit and almost out of my price range and the squall would be more in my price range but ill spend extra for something made in the usa
The Avet has just popped onto my radar, and it looks like an amazing reel. I'm use to reels with a level wind system, so wouldn't the line bunch up while one is spooling it up and/or reeling it in after a long cast? How does one keep an even balance across the spool? Thanks in advance!
As a beginner to open faced reel with a lever drag, which of all Avets would you recommend? Also whats the difference between the raptor and the one you have on this video? Just like the way they look and that they can cast real far.
Mad Max The Raptor is a suped up version of the regular reel. Twice the drag and a better lever drag system. If you are just starting out you can try an SXJ or an MXJ. They have a narrow spool so getting used to putting the line back on is an easier task.
It says so right in the Avet manual. You set strike drag to 25-30% of your line strength and you measure it with a scale. If you don't believe me you can look up the Avet manual online it's free
Question regarding free spool. I recently decided to finally give lever drag a go. The only issue I have is that when attempting to free spool, I need to turn the drag knob to lessen the drag in order for the free spool to go out on its own. If I don't , I need to pull the line out by hand. Is something wrong here ?
hi Josh, have you ever casted thus reel (SX without MC) before? I have to thumb the spool every cast to avoid backslashes--is that normal for this model, or there is a way to cast without have to thumb it all the time? thumbing on center of spool ok? or do i thumb on the side plate of the spool?
I realize how to preset the strike drag; it's supposed to be 20-30% of your line strength; so basically, if you're running 40 ilb braid, 10 pounds of drag at strike is suitable. But what is meant when they say, for example, "9 pounds at strike, 14 at full." when talking about reels? Is that the max drag for each position? But if that's true, how can such a reel handle 40+ ilb test line when the recommended strike is greater than the max drag at strike? Thanks if you can clear up my confusion lol
Start with the lever all the way back (towards you). The first notch is bait, the second is Strike. Once you start fishing with it you will get the hang of it.
Hey Josh I’m considering getting a 2 speed lever drag reel with plenty of drag for tuna up to a 100+ lbs. Could you give me some information about them and which brand would you point me to. Accurate and Avet I heard makes good lever drag reels. Could you tell me some good brands and I will look through you website. Tight lines. - Finnese Fishing
Hey Q's I asked this to a Penn Swuall guy awhile back, is the Penn 40LD a similar size to the Sentor 113H2 and is the 40LD the same as any other lever drag?
This is my first avet the raptor dose not say bait or strike on the side? I'm going to be freelining bait off piers hoping you can help :-) the raptor has notches how to use
I was just confused by the max drag listed; I mean, if you're setting the drag (in strike) to 10 pounds (which is recommended for using 40 ilb braid), that would be above the reel's listed max drag of 9 pounds at strike. I thought that would mean you're putting too much pressure on the reel.
If I use 15# mono, 25-30% the breaking strength would be around 4 to 4.5 pounds; that seems a little light but is it? I'm looking to target fluke, blues, stripers.
When you set the drag at strike, it should be 25-30% of the line strength. Eg: 15 pound test would mean 4 to 4.5 pounds at strike. I'm only saying that seems pretty light for strike, isn't it? Maybe it's just my perception - I've always used spinning reels but I've never measured the drag pressure, so maybe ~4 pounds is actually quite a lot.
Yes those are the max drags at those positions. Max drag has nothing to do with the lb test line. If you are looking at an Avet SX 5.3, most people load that with 40-50 lb braid and never have a problem.
Anywhere from a 4ft blacktip to about a 6 or maybe 7 ft bulls and spinners. Im not sure about line i was gonna use about 80 pound braid maybe about 400 yards give or take and some mono on it. I was just looking at tackle direct website. I tried to put a link but I cant figure out how to do it
In certain fishing situations you could need to go to full. If you are fishing for tuna and hook into something big and you can't move the boat, you might use full drag.
Who syas "When you set the drag at strike, it should be 25-30% of the line strength?" You can set your drag at whatever you want. You're using mono which is going to be different than braid but you can use more drag than 4-5 lbs.
well idk. ive spent nights laying in bed using a plastic cap to flip it off and on 50 times for a week. for real. and its still hard to flip off and on. but no worries. thanks for the quick response
+Damien O'Brien The clicker has a composite bushing that's made to be tight. Need to work it in. It's like that on every Avet. Why would my response to a clicker question be a paid review?
If I was uncoordinated and couldn't do simple tasks like guiding my line while fishing, I would probably need a level wind too. Luckily, I have basic hand eye coordination skills, and enjoy the increased distance affording by not having a level wind, as well as the increased reliability of not having a worm gear. There is a reason most big game reels do not have a level wind...
Marc Barilla When fighting a fish, I don't bother trying to keep the line even on the spool. Do that when retrieving a lure. Not that hard to get used to, and the lever drag casts further without extra gear on the LW. These reels are super. Love my SX 4/6 MC.

I'm trying to understand this too on the Avet. Is max drag set at FULL? When do you use FULL? Thanks for the video.
As a beginner to open faced reel with a lever drag, which of all Avets would you recommend? Also whats the difference between the raptor and the one you have on this video? Just like the way they look and that they can cast real far.

Start with the lever all the way back (towards you). The first notch is bait, the second is Strike. Once you start fishing with it you will get the hang of it.
I don't know what the breaking strength has to do with it but most anglers use 15-25 lb depending on if they are fishing for fluke, blues or stripers.
Can you cast these reels I just came across your video
what about a penn squall? would it be the same as this reel
How big are the sharks that you are catching? How much line are you using?
Great video can you also do one for star reels dont be afraid to use the torium
How do we set the drag right, like the scale method you were talking about?
That's an Avet Reel. Yes a beginner can use it but depending on how confident you are you might be better with a reel with a levelwind system.
Josh. I use my spool tension knob on my Tranx and Lexa to cast. How would I do this on a lever drag reel to cast so not to backlash?
They don't work in the same way. get a model with cast control.

The Accurate is the best but you can certainly get an Avet or a Shimano. Daiwa Saltiga is nice too.
when i store the reel should i back the drag all the way down or can i leave it set but just put the reel in free spool. thank you
Hey Q's I asked this to a Penn Swuall guy awhile back, is the Penn 40LD a similar size to the Sentor 113H2 and is the 40LD the same as any other lever drag?
hi j and h after i set strike at nine will the max already be set to 14? also if i put the lever in between strike and full will that be around 12
Try to stay below the max drag settings. Generally you don't need that much drag.
This is my first avet the raptor dose not say bait or strike on the side? I'm going to be freelining bait off piers hoping you can help :-) the raptor has notches how to use

what brand of reel I'd that? And would you recommend that to a beginner?
Do you mean physical size or line capacity? Yes the 40LD is similar to all other lever drags.
If I use 15# mono, 25-30% the breaking strength would be around 4 to 4.5 pounds; that seems a little light but is it? I'm looking to target fluke, blues, stripers.

I am a question. For this reel, is it normal for the crank handle to feel resistance when the drag lever set to full? Thanks!
That is normal. Lower your drag setting a bit and you'll be fine.
awesome, thanks!
Anywhere from a 4ft blacktip to about a 6 or maybe 7 ft bulls and spinners. Im not sure about line i was gonna use about 80 pound braid maybe about 400 yards give or take and some mono on it. I was just looking at tackle direct website. I tried to put a link but I cant figure out how to do it
thanks for sharing this. I might get a Avet for my bday.
Get a okuma makaira
So much better
How long do they take to come in?
Never go full drag.
Lmao
so what circumstance would you set to full strike? when would you use it?
In certain fishing situations you could need to go to full. If you are fishing for tuna and hook into something big and you can't move the boat, you might use full drag.
before I email. How long would it take to ship from store to Oceanside Ca. 92058?
Thank you man! Just THANK YOU!
You are welcome.
Squall is different from an Avet. It's graphite while the Avet is all metal.
Please show the complete set up process ?
Who syas "When you set the drag at strike, it should be 25-30% of the line strength?" You can set your drag at whatever you want. You're using mono which is going to be different than braid but you can use more drag than 4-5 lbs.
Which model has the numbers?
I'm 10 with a makaira lever drag 15 SEa and I taught myself
Edit: how to use lever drag
Great work!
I am new to this reel and I am having trouble casting always getting backlashes anything you would recommend so this won’t happen as much
Do you have the MC version?
jandhtackle no I have a mxl 5.8:1
You need to use your finger to move the line back and forth.
Should be. You have to test it.
well idk. ive spent nights laying in bed using a plastic cap to flip it off and on 50 times for a week. for real. and its still hard to flip off and on. but no worries. thanks for the quick response
+daytonpyro Contact Avet directly. They should fix it for you.
They work the exact same way.
the clicker on my avet is so SO SO hard to switch off and on.. not happy
daytonpyro Turn it on and off 50 times. That should loosen it up. If it doesn't, then contact the company.
+jandhtackle Your reply makes it sound like this is a paid review.
+Damien O'Brien The clicker has a composite bushing that's made to be tight. Need to work it in. It's like that on every Avet. Why would my response to a clicker question be a paid review?
Just the way it is structured. I come across it a lot, You just happend to of flagged a warning sign to me is all.
+Damien O'Brien That is very strange. Have you watched the videos on my channel?
Yeah i was wondering the exact same thing? You use your thumb to spool the line evenly? Thats ridiculous.... Level wind all the way!
Most lever drag reels are not made with levelwinds.

Love my SX 4/6 MC.
About the same size.
I know that but don't go by the manual.
Max drag is full. You will probably never use the full setting. You will use less drag a lot more often.
Leave the drag alone. Just put the lever in free spool.
You are welcome.
Thanks!!
ok thank you very much for your help
Show us the scale
This video is so old.
do a video just like this but on a raptor version thanks so much :-)
Thank you.
A week. Maybe less.
Okay thanks
Ya physical
No problem. When you're ready to buy, send me an email. josh@jandh.com
