Great addition at the end by the actresses - particularly about the lack of characters portraying the older female experience. what a delight that they won 2 awards for this beautiful episode.
I am SO glad she jumped in on that question b/c she brought up such an important aspect of this story that I've not seen discussed yet in the videos I've watched or the comments I've read.
I have watched a LOT of TV shows for the last 20 years. I don't recall being this emotionally touched and moved by a piece of television. This episode blew my mind and I even got a little obsessed about it, even at work or doing something else, thinking about what this or that meant, etc... It's one of those rare moments where everything is in the right place at the right time, a moment where you feel something special is happening. In a word: Perfection.
I just said this in another comments section, particularly about Charlie, Gugu, & Mackenzie. I said it was like fire. Fire needs oxygen, fuel, & heat to burn. Lose one & it goes out. Or it doesn't start at all. And in this case, the director, the song, "Heaven is a Place on Earth", the props, the cinematography, and so many other factors also came together to make what I think is a masterpiece.
I'm so happy Denise Burse, the actress who played the older Kelly, spoke up. What she said resonated so much to why this particular episode was so successful. It's also important to note the reporter who asked the question, a woman, didn't bother to include her. Ageism
Yes, and it's so pervasive that even I, as a 58-year-old woman, didn't notice it until you pointed it out. I'm kind of used to audiences not being interested in the experiences of older people.
Mike Fox Mike Fox I couldn't agree more with you. Charlie Brooker deserves more recognition. People like him are so important and necessary these days more than ever. So cheers to you Charlie, keep on with telling it as it is and the brilliant social commentary of our times
So happy that last actress added her thoughts!!!! That was one of my major takeaways from that episode - older women have vibrant inner worlds and that’s something that seems to unnerve ppl. They don’t just mature and become prudent old maids.
Mackenzie Davis is so beautiful, her facial expressions are just so good, lol she's slightly smiling one second then composing herself and looking like some greek sculpture
Everything about San Junipero is perfect. The whole thing is beautiful, and the one scene when Yorkie passes with that pink light behind her and the accompanying music is overwhelming. It takes a lot of strength not to break down.
Lot of talk how San Jupinero was not the best episode of Black Mirror. I could argue that may be true. However, from a production standpoint, it was outstanding. But in these heavy and difficult days we live in, you can't argue that we all needed that episode and of course a little 1980's in our lives.
I keep hearing that it had a happy ending and I just don't get it. Seeing these people remaining "forever alive"(wich I doubt is as simple as it sounds) in contrast with the "reality" that is this cold place where they keep their "minds" in some computers... That's pretty scary to me.
I loved the episode, but I do not think that there was, in any way, shape or form, a "happy ending" to San Junipero. Does anyone remember what that one guy with the glasses tells Yorkie while they're standing in front of an arcade game? He says something along the lines of, "It only works if you have two players". I caught on to that when I watched the episode a second time and it literally stabbed me in the heart as everyone beyond Yorkie and Kelly likely didn't have that advantage of enjoying San Junipero in the same fashion. To be stuck there without anyone to enjoy it with is a harrowing thought. Yes, you're living on...an infinite being in a digital sense...but it is a lonesome existence, one that could end with the push off a button anyone there doesn't have authority over it and, by extension, their own self. It's an entertaining concept that I'm sure will fascinate technological gurus both established and aspiring in the real world, but it is not a happy conclusion for the most part.
Skettles Assuming you're referring to Kelly in regards to family, remember- she didn't believe they were anywhere anyway. And I HIGHLY doubt Yorkie would have any desire to see her parents again!
Harvey Sunshine there's that too. For me it was a breath of fresh air from a show cynically focused on human frailty being amplified by technology. Here we're just allowed to watch a love story unfold with well written and acted characters we're invested in trying to get together. San Junipero is to Black Mirror what The Constant was to Lost
Wow, the dark themes of the BM nightmare world even transcend the creators...I doubt it though... Sorry, it just seems to me a happy ending, only on the surface...I still believe the creators are testing the audience's critical thinking after 3 seasons (not to be espoused at a award show press conference)...Yes, it is very dark, like all the episodes. and the theme running through the entire series... Despite the brilliantly produced uplifting ending (and putting the irrelevant sexuality aside - the couple could have been anybody), the underlying theme is control of one's consciousness (call it the soul for lack of a better term) beyond the grave. If people could (willingly) be perpetuated in heaven, the same applies to being (unwillingly) sent to hell (think death row inmates or political 'enemies'). Maybe any technology used for good has potential for evil (but that seems to simple considering the series' entirety)...One thing is for sure, Black Mirror is one heck of a show that pulls the curtain back on humanity and touches on things everyone needs to think about...can't wait for Season 4.
(Not in this season, in all)- however this season better was 'shut up and dance', then nosedive and san junipero. But there are a lot like 15millions, white bear, christmas special..come on.
I'm old enough to dislike internet keyboard warriors. Mine was only an 'opinion'. You know what an opinion is like? The keyboard warrior are you, sadly.
I feel like out of the best episodes that Black Mirror had to offer, they picked San Junipero merely because of its LGBT element. No offence to anyone but there were so many better episodes in Black Mirror that could have won that Emmy.
fjoolololol Isn't every episode of Black Mirror "thought provoking"? I don't understand what was so special about this particular episode that made it win an Emmy other than the LGBT element. In my opnion, White Bear or the the Entire History of You are easily a better episode than San Junipero but I feel like they gave this one the Emmy just because of its LGBT element.
No, they gave this one, because is the favorite of 90% of the fans and also Brooker's favorite, is pretty obvious that is the best one of the third season , and your examples are from previous seasons. The LGBT element is not important, if you are not a homophobe.
There was a lot more to it: Age, virtual reality, memory, simulation theory, death, family, and many philosophical and emotional questions that come with such concepts. Also, it's odd logic to say it won because of one single element, regardless of what that element is. IMO, the LGBT element was only a small aspect. Lastly, White Bear and Entire History of you are from older seasons; winning an Emmy is very much also about who your competitors are.
Great addition at the end by the actresses - particularly about the lack of characters portraying the older female experience. what a delight that they won 2 awards for this beautiful episode.
Yes, she said something great!
San Junipero is my favorite Black Mirror episode.... the soundtrack is just perfect.
Same! I loved the music & vibe of this episode, not to mention the characters and story 🖤
@@gypsydoratarot8441 me to I watched it today 🤛🏽👌🏽🙏🏽
The last woman is amazing!! We need more older women on the screen.
I love what she said. She was so on point with that comment.

Well said. I’ve watched this episode three times. It’s the only black mirror episode I revisit. It’s haunting, nostalgic and it stays with you.
And the soundtrack is out of this world fantastic
Love me some Gugu. She's an amazing woman!
D Bare ditto
D Bare She really is! The world needs more people like her.

I cannot stop watching this episode, so pure and nostalgic.
this episode is the ultimate of the tech mind-blowing series. I can’t believe that unique touch of humanity. Pure imagination.
Charlie Brooker needs more exposure! He is one of Britain's greatest exports!
Mike Fox Mike Fox I couldn't agree more with you. Charlie Brooker deserves more recognition. People like him are so important and necessary these days more than ever. So cheers to you Charlie, keep on with telling it as it is and the brilliant social commentary of our times
nononono we need screenwipe!
Export my arse, we're keeping him!
Genius
Mackenzie’s muscles though 🔥
she can hit me if she wants to, I'd thank her

Yeah what a stunning sculpture! ❤️ MACK
Mack is talented better that 10x Jenniffer Lawrence
I wonder if that guy noticed the irony of taking a selfie during an awards interview with the creator of Black Mirror.
Science! 😂
I ship them
We all do ♡

I don't remember the pink light, but I do think it was a beautiful ep. I would have loved to have seen this as a full-length feature film!
love all women casts of San Junipero. so talented, so amazing. such a great, great episode and the music is also good
Please make a movie from San junipero
I mean it's already a movie
Double fisting Emmys like a complete boss
This episode is legendary
Absolute Perfect cast! Loved everyone in San Junipero, but escpecially Denise Burse. What a sincere performance!
This is the best show when you realize you are entering the world it depicts every day into the future.
My favorite episode! Fascinating and a happy ending! San Junipedro seems like an ideal place to just let loose and be yourself and be happy

Mackenzie Davids
the best story best casts too wow!!!!
One test of great art or entertainment is that it engages with people outside of its key audience, and that is what happened with this episode.
San junipero is the best hour of TV ever made. Don't @ me.
that was Beautifull episode Thank you so much ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
and Merry X.mas !🦌🎄🎄🎄🎅
Black mirror is the best show I've ever seen.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw is beautiful woman wow!!!!
This production has a beatifull actress
OMG, Mackenzie Davis is so tall... Love her !!!
She stands 5'11 you can see that in Terminator.
Cant believe i just watched this EP. I love it so much.
Simple things can be very complex too.
That guy is a God 💗
I LOVE WOMEN
I love everyone that respects them like you do!
0:40 lol !
Season 4 was totally amazing the best by far
So far ......
the white actress is absolutely gorgeous!
Ooohhh baby.....
There are attractive women- and then there is Gugu and McKenzie Davis. Damn.
I keep hearing that it had a happy ending and I just don't get it. Seeing these people remaining "forever alive"(wich I doubt is as simple as it sounds) in contrast with the "reality" that is this cold place where they keep their "minds" in some computers... That's pretty scary to me.
Daniel Mur Siles dude, compared to the other cynical gutwrenching episodes, San Junipero is a fuckin fairytale ending
I loved the episode, but I do not think that there was, in any way, shape or form, a "happy ending" to San Junipero. It was happy in that those two characters got to live their truth / live at all (considering one was in a coma since 23).
Wait a minute...wasn’t Gugu playing Kelly as an older woman as well? They look so much alike
I'm TheGeloMonster Nope, that was Denise. They do look a lot alike, though. 🙂
Mackenzies face at 3:25

That woman incessantly coughing. That’s where COVID started lol

So you remember when questions were short?
Ah shyt no sequel
I'm happy Black Mirror won, but I think there are 4,5 better episodes. This is only a mere opinion about the episodes, no ideology or others.
(Not in this season, in all)- however this season better was 'shut up and dance', then nosedive and san junipero. But there are a lot like 15millions, white bear, christmas special..come on.
Really? I thought Shut Up and Dance was by far the weakest, still enjoyed it though
White Bear doesn't have much subtlety. Of course internet keyboard warriors will like Shut Up and Dance. :p
I'm old enough to dislike internet keyboard warriors. Mine was only an 'opinion'. You know what an opinion is like? The keyboard warrior are you, sadly.
Internet keyboard warrior wasn't a reference to you specifically. Also, "the keyboard warrior are you, sadly" doesn't make sense.
Owen isnt relax
I feel like out of the best episodes that Black Mirror had to offer, they picked San Junipero merely because of its LGBT element. No offence to anyone but there were so many better episodes in Black Mirror that could have won that Emmy.
San Junipero was the most thought provoking episode. The LGBT portion was only a small portion of that element in my opinion.
fjoolololol Isn't every episode of Black Mirror "thought provoking"? I don't understand what was so special about this particular episode that made it win an Emmy other than the LGBT element. Fifteen million merits and nosedive are my favorites.
This episode wasnt that great. Shut Up and Dance was better.
+rahul you have a cold dead heart if it didnt move you in some way
Max Jerome It moved me away from the TV screen.
+rahul maybe I'm too sensitive
Nah he is too young to know what good story execution, decent cinematography and good acting is.
Shut up and Dance is by far the worst one, it had many bad reviews as well. San Junipero is magic, is deep and complex., is by far the best.
