Still the most misunderstood game of all time. To this day people still don't realize that the main character, Aiden Pearce, is supposed to be unlikeable, he is not a hero, the game is about how wrong vigilantism is and how Aiden falls into this rabbit hole, this cycle of violence and murder that completely ruins him and the people around him. Despite the fact that he goes against very bad people, he isn't a good person.

    • @notatimetraveler6444

Ironically, he is my favorite protagonist because of his imperfections.
He means well but gets impulsive or distracted, he brings people he loves into his dirty life purely without meaning to or realizing he is.
However, by the end of it all, he is too far into the rabbit hole that he has nothing left for him now, so he plays what he put down and embraces the life of The Vigilante.
Also his roast on the whole “Revenge is always bad, I’m empty” trope is amazing.

I never particularly liked Aiden or the games storyline in general, but that didn’t sully my enjoyment of the game. I just wish Ubisoft didn’t shove his family in your face to try and make you sympathize with him. Dead niece, kidnapped sister, traumatized nephew, all bc this a hole wants to play hacker man, and we are supposed to care lol. Nah. It was fun to run around hacking shit and blowing stuff up. The story was kinda garbage, aside from a few cool characters (jordy, lucky quin, that hick hacker dude that’s also in WD2; ETC) I didn’t see it as anything more than a half baked, poorly written excuse to engage the games fun mechanics and explore the very detailed world. Ubisoft is not known for writing particularly good, well written stories with intricate, deep, fleshed out characters.

I was there when the trailer dropped. After years and years of PS3 360 gen I remember the trailer being so mind blowing. Watching it now, it's the little things, the way the wind blows stuff across the street and how Aiden and NPC clothes and all fabrics on screen react to that wind. The passing subway train's lights and the complex shadows that it leaves. In hindsight all that is so much processing power being used for subtle things, it was glorious but it was never realistically possible.
I think a lot of it was developers that had been stuck on last gen hardware like forever finally having a chance to unleash and show everything that they'd been dying to work on and try out and they got a little carried away in their excitement, got a little too ambitious and threw in EVERYTHING new and groundbreaking they'd been waiting to try with no solid idea of what next gen hardware looked like.
I'm in a weird place with Watch Dogs because I was blown away by what I saw and thought it was the future of games and when it came out I was disappointed that it didn't live up to that trailer. At the same time I was still blown away by what we did get. It was still one of the best looking games of the time. It was still a huge leap over everything that came before. The game still looked glorious in the rain, at night. The depth of field bokeh effects were still amazing. The rain in slow mo still looked phenomenal. The gameplay was different and lot of fun too. Being able to stealth entire gang hideous by hacking stuff everywhere was insanely cool! So yeah it was a weird game that really disappointed and amazed in equal measure

idk how this statement is so chocking when yes, the story is pretty bland. I do love the game for the esthetic, music, ambience and characters but it does feel a lot that it’s not really great nor unique. in the storyline, hacking doesn’t really feel like the main focus when it’s the whole purpose of the game. Aiden is overall a John Wick that happens to hack stuff yk ? I’ve played the story like 5 times but yeah not anything great. it’s ok ? pretty nice at best ? not great when we’re talking about Ubisoft who made in the same period of time many more than great stories for their franchises.
it isn’t even subtle storytelling, it tries to be, yes, but scratches the surface. we get the character but then there’s little progression. Aiden’s story feels carried by the world building made around him, but is a one dimensional character, really. it doesn’t even seems like he particularly enjoys hacking, just, again, happens to be able to. nothing wrong with an MC who is an asshole and a fucked up flawed character, but yeah it’s a serious story for 15 yo in 2015. not to throw shades, i hope my example is understood.

I think Watch_Dogs 1 was the best of them because of the story. Just one guy on a mission to take matters into his own hands after his life was destroyed. That sense of underdog justice while pulling all the stops against a large evil entity is hard to capture as well as Watch_Dogs 1 did. The later games were essentially just teenagers messing around and it's a lot harder to feel immersed into the story.
Also Aiden is not a plank, just very introverted.

Despite it's flaws, I loved the dark, serious feel of the first game. I think they oversteered into the silly and absurd for the second game, and then couldn't decide where to land for the third. The first game just felt so different from every other game world. I liked that for most of the story, Aiden's goal wasn't to destroy the system, it was to exploit it for his own ends. Rarely do we see a main character in a distopian world who isn't there to change the established order, but just to survive and thrive in that broken system. It made Aiden feel more real to me, like he was just some talented guy in this world, not the typical "main character" type we see so often.

"goes back to roots" good luck on that one with Ubisoft.
Loads of people have been waiting for R6 to go back to its roots for 20 years, have waited 10 years for a new splinter cell in hopes that it'll go back to it's roots, wanted a Ghost Recon like it originally was presented 25 years ago (even tho GR is in the best state it ever had been in after its identity crysis from 2006-2015 imo, it's just sad to see just how much potential they wasted which you can feel and notice all the time in Wildlands & Breakpoint - which in the end turns them into below average products).
Ubisoft got good ideas, but they're unable to re-create what they originally did and the best that can happen is if a franchise gets discontinued - otherwise you just end up with an ever changing cycle of cash cows with the sole reminder of the franchise being the name.

2:00 -- It wasn't just the graphics. It was subtle things. I remember geeking out with my brothers over the fact that he helped a woman out of her car, and the things she was yelling while she was in it. The betrayal was that the trailer made it feel like a real world, and it really didn't have the same feeling when it came out. There wasn't the same attention to detail, and it was very repetitive. The trailer made the NPCs feel like they weren't just NPCs.

I do not know of any other publisher with more divisive releases. Every Ubsioft release is either hot garbage or an unsung masterpiece according to who you ask. Indifference is only really found in people who do not play their games.

Bugs and gameplay can be fixed but a bad story can't, that's why this game succeeded in the end, it had a beautiful and emotional story.

I really enjoyed Watchdogs 2, even with the cringe get-along gang of protagonists. It was really fun. The screw-around factor was top tier, and thats what makes a game for me. If its fun to just goof around in the world, thats a solid game.

Nope, doesn't need it visuals still hold up which is kinda the whole point of this video, put remaster/remake resources into really old games which actually need it please

Watch Dogs: Legion just didn't hit the same notes as the first Watch Dogs which is sad and The story in Legion felt a bit all over the place, whereas the original had a more gripping and focused narrative and the mind of the fox that really pulled you in.

I play Watch Dogs till this day with a couple graphical mods and I personally think it's the best Watch Dogs. It captures a great serious tone unlike the other ones. Everything about this game is great. Currently on my 4th playthrough.

I own this game on the 360 and Xbox One. Do I like it? Duh. I've actually been thinking of getting it on PC with the Living City mod but was waiting for a bit more coverage hence the beauty of you.
Personally, though I own both 2 and Legion, I don't like them. I got both because of the first one; was disappointed with the story of two - while 1 was a bit bland, it was also serious. 2 wasn't whatsoever. Legion's trailers and first mission seem to be serious but that was just another illusion. Now, for various reasons, I completely distrust and loathe Ubisoft, so I doubt I'll buy any Watch_Dogs 3/4 based on trailer or gameplay reveal alone. Oddly, it wasn't 1's fake gameplay trailer that put me off, it was the narrative lies of the future games.

Bro. No hate, IDK what you are on about, on the game being bad, The game is incredible, when I first bought it in 2014, I remember I had a gt 740M with an i5-4200u, That I was able to play at the lowest setting at 720p, and completed the game, it was awesome, The game was really ahead of it,s time. Even today, the game feels updated and like it belongs in the moderan era, and this game can still squeeze my gtx 1650 off, which is insame.

I loved this game and the stealth. It also had something cool I wish all games had, it’s during gunfights enemies think you are in one position which allows you to sneak around them while they still look where they thought you were.

its so weird that you're documenting this as if its a really old thing when i vividly remember watching the first trailer and just absolutely stunned at how "different" it was. its like thinking the graphics we have right now are the best and nothing can top it, then bam watch dogs out of nowhere just changes the whole thing.
i also remember the massive waves of disappointment from it because i was one of them, i recall really feeling bumbed out about it and everyone was comparing it to gta.

I remember a friend of mine had the game through Xbox Gold, staying up late completing the missions and getting into some trouble (or avoiding some) online. He played the single player couple of times and made Aiden Pearce references. It was fun and glad that the modding scene of the game exploded recently. I want to try these mods out

I was 18 when the first game came out and I still remember how blown away I was by the graphics in the cinematic trailer. Even when the game didn't look that good in the end, that trailer was the first time I couldn't tell if what I was seeing was live action or animated and that sensation was something that stuck with me.
One thing I also like about the franchise is how divided people are about which entry is the best. There really does not seem to be a general consensus after all these years.
Funnily enough, Life is Strange, which started as a franchise a year later, is the same.
People prefer the games based on what they value the most in a game. be it the plot, pacing, characters or mechanics.
I personally like both WD1 and 2 and I like that they went with such opposing moods for them.
I have yet to get around to Legion, but I do distinctly remember that it stood out to me that the person who spoke for the initial reveal actually got a tad political in his speech, talking about the state of Britain at the time and such.
I figured such a big studio would keep their hands off of touching on those topics without the game as a layer inbetween. I liked that they didn't go all "This game is totally not political, nooope" a la David Cage.
