A segment of my series recording the Dread language from Destiny 2.
(Thanks @TomiastheTired4053 for the thumbnail)
(Music from Sessions: Star Guardian Taliyah: • Sessions: Star Guardia... )
Vos’kosh'i’ya’yin’gā !
As always, feel free to pause to read the subtitles.
When reading the subtitles, it gives me eldritch vibes.
The subjugators sound like they're bantering with you in combat. The tormentors sound like they hate you with every fiber of their being. They also remain me of Grineer
As someone new-ish to Warframe. I feel you are spot on with that comparison.
Tenno scoom!!
Why are they still breathing my air?
@@wisnu7846 *THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE*
I wonder if Drifter's tried to eat one yet
Tormentors lines are so etched in my brain ever since they first appeared in Lightfall
I've been waiting for this!
The terror they provide is still so prevalent
It’s really cool they had this language planned out even all the way back then
Now if only I could understand what they meant.
I hate them but they are the best enemy type in so long. They were well introduced, too.
Just looking at the tormentor's general demeanor makes me wonder how different the lines between tormentors and subjugators are.
There’s another video showing the subjugators lines
Yeah, I saw that one. I meant to say I wonder how their different their meanings are. As in are Tormenters edgy and Subjugators pretentious or vice versa
@@TomiastheTired4053 ah, that is a fair point given their mannerisms
@@TomiastheTired4053You can also try to guess based off of who they’re clones of. Nezarc speaks far more bluntly and less flowery than Rhulk does.
@@TomiastheTired4053 here's a hint about the differences betwen Subjugators and Tormentors. The Sub's bow to you when they spawn in.
Hes _definatley_ friend shaped
More like *FINAL* shaped

1:28 That is the second line the Bungie Dev spoke when he said we could translate the Dread language on the Vidoc.
3:03 And that's the first one
Glad someone else noticed it.
@@twelved4983 I noticed them since I listened to Bungie Dev and when I played the DLC for the first time I heard them much more often and looked for them in the video.
So who has translated it yet?
10 hr tormenter breathing asmr when
Hmmmmmmm not a bad idea

I don’t believe there’s too much to go off of for now until we get more Dread lore, but I will say, the words I’ve been paying most attention to are the words “kos” and “vos,” like when the Tormentor says “Kos’yen’eit’get.” (3:03) These may have variations, but they seem to appear in multiple different voice lines across all Dread units, leading me to believe these are either closer to words like “I” or “you,” or perhaps a common verb like “to be,” or “to do,” or something like that.
Point is, given how we keep hearing those specific sounds from them, it’s no doubt a common idea being used there.
I do believe the ko is 'you' because it is repeated in several forms. Ko= you kok=your and so on, and perhaps we can build from there. E is the most used letter in the English language, so if we can work back from the most used consonant, it might start making more sense to fill in from there.
Honestly, Tormenters are probably the coolest enemies we’ve ever faced in Destiny. When I first encountered one I was legitimately like “what the heck is that”!
Tormentors are the first boss enemy since the hunters in halo that kake me both terrified but also excited to fight. Their weakspots are satisfying to break and the noises they make are so cool.
I really liked the part where he went "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh"
So much emotion
For some reason when the Tormentor says "Kik'thid'va'na'tsi'vo" I'm reminded of every time you hear a fallen captain or vandal say "Herr slor isir thid." Undoubtedly a coincidence but kinda funny that the phrase "thid" comes up in two unrelated faction's voice lines.
doubtebly a coincidence if the dread are meant to be chimerae they may use the languages from other factions sliced up with their own sprinkled in.
2:27 when did tormentors get the n word pass
They are black
half of their body is black
To be fair, who’s gonna take it from them? I sure as shit won’t beef with a guy shaped like a Costco Refrigerator who can jump like 15 feet in the air and launch himself at me at mach 1!
@@Ace_2O2 you are absolutely right, they can keep it
The Tormentors like entrance sound effect is so burnt into my brain that every time I hear it I start panicking
Me too. Especially when my screen turns red. Even worse if they are yellow bars.
1:28 Im guessing this one says "You're light is mine."
2:22 For this one I think "Guardian."
Zhi Ke Tak Seems to be repeated a few times in different lines, and always at the end
It must be so fun to voice these guys. Making your voice sound all intimidating while shouting war cries in a language made specifically for the game.
I know I would find it fun, as I find myself randomly screaming dragon shouts in Dovahzul on occasion after I started playing Skyrim. Lol
Nearly at 1000 subs. You're doing amazing work getting these archived! Hopefully we can one day know what they are speaking.
awaiting for bro to start translating this
That makes me shake deep down to my soul 😢
Truly. If your stuff doesn't help figure out this language, Bungie was just fucking with us
well, the eliksni and i believe some other factions have actual languages too (that were translated) so o doubt theyre fucking wirh us
You legend. I knew someone would be on the case. Thank you!
The tormentors in onslaught say genji alot
I also have the tormenters talking stuck in your head.
I can't believe no one or at least until now I haven't seen anyone decrypt what the dread are saying
The reason no one has decrypted anything they’re saying yet is because we don’t have a Rosetta Stone yet. We don’t know how to actually spell the language, nor the context of which they’re speaking. Thus, without a proper understanding or translation of something else into the Dread language, we can only guess based off of word frequencies, which is already difficult by itself.
@@twelved4983so we can translate it to English, but bungie just hasn’t givin us the tool to do it?
They casually throwing slurs at u mid combat its so funny hearing them say shit like "Eeuüģhffűkîckƙsvañavɓsivòœo¤¤》《♧"
Tormentors are just darkness flavored Krieg from Borderlands 2.
Tormentor: Bring me solo and the wookie
Thinking about the Dread, i would find it interesting if Bungie made a Arc Tormentor and a Solar Tormentor, both with different abilities. Like the Subjugators, but with the Light. That's a thought i had in my mind ever since The Final Shape released. Like, imagine an Arc Tormentor blinding you or a Solar Tormentor scorching you. Just a thought
For some, reason the tormentors sound like they’re speaking to themselves, while the subjugators are like speaking to you. It’s hard to quantify, but the tormentors sound much less actually engaged in the speaking, and more so in the combat itself. Tormentors sound much more aggressive and wrathful, while subjugators seem like they are actually trying to engage in conversation. Must just be a difference in their original species, with tormentors probably being some cabal or Qugu origin. And subjugators being derived from the much more formal and well spoken Lubraens.
There’s a channel that archived every possible voiceline in a video called tormentor sfx and another called dread sfx they have the remainer of any missing lines, just without dictation
Tormentors hurt my bones
has anyone made progress on translating the language yet?
These things even grab guardians if the screen flashes red they will chase u
Listening to the voice lines without music actually makes the tormenters more intimidating to me. Up until now they felt more annoying when I fought them in game. Sound, music, voice acting - this video just shows that all of those things make a real difference.
The dread are just anime protagonist yelling their attacks name before using it
You were mentioned in one of a popular destiny lore yts videos "my name is byf" when he was talking about the dread language. Also, you are one of the few people with few but good content
Pour one out for my man who replayed the Lightfall campaign just for us 🥂
What fascinates me about the dread is that unlike the taken, they are potentially and likely sapient.
For real sounds like black speech from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings
Dude... As a beginner, nice intro, nice edit, nice outro
Byf lead me here. This is so cool. I've literally had Tormentor brain worms since first hearing them
They almost sound like Eliksni Archons
they're speaking dreadian !
Generally speaking. I fear nothing in this game. But this thing it scares me. Especially when it suppresses you out of your abilities or even worse super.
But the worst part : screen turns red "Panik!"
I feel there might be some missing lines here, Tormentors have (or had, it really seems like they got revoiced in Final Shape) one specific line that is BURNT into my memory because of how much ive heard it and how much ive joked about it with friends, it sounds something similar to "Chakum Chakai!"
I wonder if there will be a special event when we decipher the language that allows us to communicate with them lol
Ageis Mind has the raw files of the Tormentors and Subjugators. Figured you'd want to know. They're on his channel.
Sounds like a grineer
Has no one noticed how tormentors are based off nezerc and subjugators are based of rhulk when it comes to how they look
we were given huge hints that Tormentors are created via Nezarec's genetic DNA thanks to Rhulk, while Subjugators are Light/Darkness Infused Creations
@@soundwave4236light? There stasis or strand in the image of rhulk. Hey even share the same overconfident personally had
@adamboy0559 we find out The Dread are created via Light AND Darkness, The Light just gave them shape
@@soundwave4236 where is this stated? Even if so the light may have gave them there shape the witness created them with mostly darkness with 2 being tormentors and subjugators being direct copies of 2 of his most loyal disciples
@@adamboy0559 in the lore for the Warlock strand robes, it mentions The Witness using The Light while creating a Grim
I am excited to see what you figure and uncover good job :)
I'm surprised they are able to speak and breath without a Head.
They do have a head, it's just small
kos’shin’jid also appears in subjugator voice lines if i’m not mistaken
Tormentor :3
He kinda sounds like an angey scottish man trying to speak japanese
Tormentors sound like Klingons
The real question is, can the Dread cuss?
Imagine if we translate it and it’s just them saying the most unhinged shit to us
They are of the darkness
They are definitely calling us slurs 😭
Goo goo gaa gaa
Next we should get a task for e together to look for the tablet mentioned in euphony lore Infact let’s get a discord going cause I don’t see anyone else giving this in game puzzle a good try
I swear to god blueberries do not pop the shoulders and throw supers ffs😂😂😂
WHAT did the Tormentor just call me? 😭 2:27
Just found out its hard to tell, but the Husk speak dread.
My favorite line wasn't in this video :(
My friend and I will always laugh at "Kha'gu'dar gin'gee"
I'm not sure if I missed the line, but I think a line went along the lines of "Ra' Kul' Va' Kine'!", but I do not remember the action that prompts the line. Might just be an idle line, but it seemingly wasn't here.
There are other videos that are direct rips of the Tormentor dialogue from Lightfall specifcally, so that might help in gettting more
Byf said hi
Wait….., Tormentors talk?! 😭
All the big unit dread can talk just in an alien language. Most likely in frontiers saga we will see dread become more complex and have their own ambitions and begin to communicate with guardians.
The syntax seems Arabic but the vocabulary feels greek with some variations of north African blended into it.
I wonder if the Boss in the Liminality strike has different lines.
Yay voices :D
I think ‘Ga (…) jek’ may mean guardian. Just based off context
So, 'Ga li Jek' is assumed to mean Guardian.
And 'Te 'o is either two or one word. But, my guess is a type of callout like:
- Spotted
- Present
- Ahead
- Sighted?
I'll see if it's used anywhere else.
Note: 'O is used at the end if the words frequently. Maybe it means ED or ING?
The only two I didn’t hear were (as I hear them) “kaga sa kugamen” and “kul trar in vahn”
On top of being camera shy, I'm sure the player reaction of "Tormentor, kill it" does not help
they sound like Harkkonens
i would love to hear the translation :O
So....does anyone know what the words mean? Would be awesome to see these translated. Great work isolating the vocals and showing the pronunciations!
Does anyone know if this subject already has an specific discord channel for discoveries/discussion? Would love to join.
I think the language is Hausa. 😊
Now I’m curious what they actually say …
it seems like it's a mix of Japanese German and something else
maybe swedish or Norwegian
or italian?
God I hate tormenters with a passion when they arrive on screen with what ever activity I'm doing I have to despatch them immediately all other enemies are secondary
1:07 Kakangku?
I wonder what the lines would be if they were translated into something we could understand
Have we cracked the translations yet??
Skyrim Dragon tongue?
Why are tormentors the only ones that can wield that scythe? I want to drain red bars health for super energy. I should be able to suppress enemies every 2 seconds 😂
Would like to know how this translates to English. (I remember the devs saying in a trailer the dread have their own language but I’m not sure if anyone has figured it out or not. Or If I’m just flat out wrong.)
What is that place?
Any idea what these translate to?
2:31 bro literally hits us with the N word 💀
OH NO, he said the n word :c
2:30
But for now Is possible to translate what they are saying?
Magna Wächter auf wish bestellt
It feels like a mix of black speech and mandalorian
