Hi Will. Thanks for all of your great FCP tutorials. I'm a FCP newbie. I have a question which is how can I work on multiple projects at the same time and jump between them as needed? For example, how do I close out "Project A" totally and open "Project B" so I can work on it?
Just downloaded the free 90 day trial. I'm trying to edit a video in FCP 10.5.1 and audio waveforms are enabled in the timeline. When the clips are played and the playhead goes beyond what's visible on screen (to the right) and I side-scroll to catch up, the wave forms are gone. This sounds like normal behaviour to me, it’s certainly what mine does. Not sure if this goes away with a high enough spec machine or if it’s just the way it is 🤔 you could certainly try changing the timeline view to just show waveform though and see if it persists. Hope that helps 👍🙏😎
Great video brother! As a new video editor, this is super helpful. Question: where do I go to find lower thirds? Looking for one to inform my viewers to subscribe to the RUclips channel and one I can use for text graphics?
Would be nice to show us what to do in a new project where some of the files are 4k and some are 1080, some at 25,50,100 fps. A mash up of file types in one project if you will.
Great tutorial thanks Ben (I come from working in FCP 7 and AVID). How do you use cross sections of sequences in other edits (aka projects in FCPX) and drop them into your timeline?
Who is Ben? have you got me confused with someone else? but to answer your question, this is when you would use compound clips, select the sectio you want, right click, create compound clip. this will add that section to your browser so you can then add it to other timelines. if you open the compound clip and make changes they will effect all instances of the clip
I don’t want to subscribe to you! I want you to be my personal instructor / mentor! Being used to iMovie, when I first opened FCP it was like stepping into a dark empty workshop, I was completely lost! I love how you turned the lights on in the different sections of the workshop explaining their purpose, their features and how to use the tools in them. Excellent tutorial! Thank you. I will keep watching your tutorials. And Yes, I will subscribe. 👍🏻
I have a Drobo 5D (thunderbolt 2) which copes ok but id like to get myself an 2TB SSD for editing and then use the drobo to archive work, its not totally required but would speed things up a bit. As you could see Ive also used the Lacie drives and they are fine but mine are again thunderbolt 2 so are showing their age a bit in terms of transfer speeds. 🙏👍😎
Hi! Thank you for the video! I am new here and do not know how to activate the hover over clip to be able to preview the videoclips. Perhaps you know how to fix it?
No mention of the Magnetic Timeline and how it works? The Magnetic timeline is what makes FCPX MUCH faster than Premiere or any track-based editor. Not understanding the Magnetic Timeline is what makes most people try Final Cut, click around, and abandon it because it doesn't edit like they expect. I can take take the same project as an editor using Premiere and finish it about three times faster because of the Magnetic Timeline. Those that give the 'iMovie Pro' slur to Final Cut are people who don't understand the Magnetic Timeline. I use Final Cut Pro and Apple Motion every day at work and many days at home. I teach both apps myself. However, I learned something from your video that finally explained to me why a new timeline (Project) SOMETHINGS adapts to the first clip parameters and sometimes does not. Thank you. Finally, the audio meters on the right end of the timeline are toggled on and off by clicking on the tiny audio meters under the Viewer.
Thanks Don, some great points you have raised. It’s so hard to do a full intro tutorial like this and not make it an hour long so yes I did omit the magnetic timeline this time instead trying to be broader and cover more to get people started. I think I could do a whole video just on the magnetic timeline alone and perhaps I should! Thanks for watching As always Don 👍🙏😎
Hi Richard, I just zoomed out in the viewer using command- also when set to view fit the viewer changes depending on it’s available size which can cause it to be smaller or larger depending what windows you have open. Hope that helps
Will, this is brilliant & super helpful. I've used imovie for some time & have just today got the trial version of FCP. May I ask - do you have a natural 'sequel' to this vid, I mean that I now have lots of questions about the next tier of skills above these 'getting started' ones. Thank you so much. Sub'd. G
Great to hear Garry! id say there are a few vids ive done that might be helpful. organising footage folders and events is a good one to watch, as is the keyboard shortcuts video i did. many thanks
Things I've learned after watching your video: - First time I'm touching "toggle clip display" - "Custom settings will base it on the first clip of import": good to know. - i for in point and o for out point - I was today years old when I found out FCP has built-in sound effects 😅 I have one Q: I downloaded a bunch of title templates. These templates have fancy fonts. Once I drag them onto the timeline, they all default to Helvetica. Do you happen to know how to fix this?
Glad you found it useful! You will need to find and download the required fonts, install them, and restart Final Cut. Then the fonts will show as intended. Most effect packs have a guide document which normally has links to the fonts to make life easier. Happy editing! 👍🙏😎
@@WillChidlow Hahhhhhh I thought that could be the case. I'll dive deeper into those help docs. Didn't yet see the fonts - but then again, I wanted to play around with the templates NOW so I didn't thoroughly read the docs 😅 I'll check, thankss 🙏
Hi Will, I’ve looked through your vids and can’t find what I’m looking for, have you done a vid of your process from start to finish editing, say like import footage, drag to timeline... then what do you do, sort the sound first, or blade, do you start with the music etc etc hope that makes sense?
Hi, thanks for watching. This is a bit tricky as my approach to editing tends to change depending on the type of project. Is there a specific type of video you are hoping to get a process for?
@@WillChidlow Thank you for getting back to me! Well yes and no, honestly I didnt expect you to say that - your vids and mine are kind the same in the sense they are building something and showing info to users, but I actually havent seen a vid on youtube that actually shows the start to end process of editing, its usually short vids that we are supposed to piece together and go alone as it were. For example every vid on youtube will show how to edit sound of one clip in the time line or how to use a feature etc etc but what happens if you ramp some clips with different cameras that have different sound no ones actually done this type of vid - like a day in the life of an editor with every issue along the way.. Does that make sense?
Another great video! Is there any way to set a default for when you click on Import? I find it so difficult to search for my Downloads, or another specific location when I’m importing media. I usually only have 2 or so locations from where I want to import from and I waste so much time always having to click the Date tab to put most recent at top, and searching through all of the locations to find what I’m looking for. Thanks in advance if you can help!
Hi Deedee! Ok so there are a few points to cover in your question, firstly organisation is so key when using FCPX, I always create a folder on my hardrive where everything for the project lives including the library itself. Taking a few minutes to make sure all my required assets are in one place always pays off in the long run. For this reason I prefer importing using the second method I showed in the video, just dragging the folder from the finder into the library. Secondly, you can set import defaults in final cut properties, in the top navigation click final cut > properties, then select imports, here you can set things like optimised media etc so when you drag footage into the lib it always does what you want it to do. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 🙏🙏👍
Hi, I have a problem and I was wondering if you can help. I want to try the FCPX 90 day free trial and I tried to download it last night but it didn't download. It says: Minimum System Requirements are10:15.7 or later. My Mac is: 10:14.6. Does that mean I can't take advantage of the free trial? How do I get FCPX for my Mac 10:14.6 then?
Hi Robert, unfortunately i think this will be an issue for you. You cannot purchase an older version of an app in the app store. As an example, if you had already purchased FCPX and logged in to the app store you would be able to choose to download FCPX and when needed the app store will serve up the latest compatible version for you, so i theory if you were purchasing it then it should work, however that doesn't help regarding the free trial. In addition, FCPX only started offering a free trial a few versions ago so i doubt older versions would support the trial even if you could get an older version installed.
Hi Robert, there is a way but its not ideal. you will need to find a friend with a newer mac so you can temporarily log into the appstore using your ID to make the purchase (app store purchases are stored against your apple ID not the machine). Then when back on your machine go to app store and go to purchased apps, find FCPX and select download, this is where it should give you the option to download the last compatible version for your machine. As a side note, ive not tested this with FCPX specifically but this forum post confirmed my thought process: discussions.apple.com/thread/250914177 Hope that helps.
@@WillChidlow Thanks Will, I appreciate it. Love your video. It was really helpful. Looking forward to getting started with FCPX. Hopefully I'll be able to download soon.
When you save that final Master File does that need to be backed up? or is it good enough to have all the information stacked in the Final Cut Pro project file that you made at the beginning?
This is a whole other world of options! personally I store libs on a raided drive and that is all the backup i have. Others would say im mad and should have 2 other backups to be safe. It all depends on how important the footage and projects are i guess
Hi, thouroughly enjoyed your intro to FC. Picked up COOL tips for things even outside of FC. i.e., I was married to iMovie for Mac, and my library has ballooned. Boss got me Final Cut, and i notice your method of, setting up library was on External HD!!! Love it!!! I have 20qs about that line of organization... but I will hold off. I was looking for the 'Ken Burns' effect. But I found it with Help file on FC... Kinda wished you included that on toot (ONLY COMPLAINT), because I love to pan with video and still shots using KB, glad FC has it. Not my question / statement actually, question is do you tend to use FC only? OR do you tend to use other video editing software according to jobs?
I’m still having a hard time with the transitions. I feel like I’ve been spoiled by iMovie. When I drop down a transition it says there is not enough room.
Sorry to bother you again Will but I was wondering why I can't add a transparent logo to the bottom of my video. I had no problem dropping a regular logo down in the right corner. I figured that out and it looks great. But is there a way I can add an eps logo to the bottom corner? If you could let me know I'd appreciate it. Thanks
Hi Robert, you can’t import eps into final cut. You’ll need to use a PNG image. If you have an image editor like Adobe illustrator or photoshop you should be able to convert eps to png to and then import that to final cut. Hope that helps 👍
@@WillChidlow Thanks Will. I don't know how to use Adobe Illustrator yet so I will try and convert it in Photoshop. Thanks a million Will. I sure appreciate the great advice. I will definitely watch your new up coming video coming out this week. Thanks
Will, I do have a question about external drives. I have a 2 T Silicon Power Armor Drive. Can I use this drive that way? I wasn't sure if it was fast enough for that or not. I originally bought this drive to make more space available on my computer.
Hi Cory, it really depends on connection type and speed. Usb 3, usb c, thunderbolt 2 or thunderbolt 3 will all be ok in most cases but an older usb 2 or FireWire drive will likely cause you issues. Basically the faster the better. Hope that helps mate 👍🙏😎

Who is Ben? have you got me confused with someone else? but to answer your question, this is when you would use compound clips, select the sectio you want, right click, create compound clip. this will add that section to your browser so you can then add it to other timelines. if you open the compound clip and make changes they will effect all instances of the clip
Will Chidlow Sorry will, yes my mistake. But thanks for your response. Very helpful. Stay safe !
Awesome! thanks for watching! so glad you found it helpful!
New stubbie! Great video
Glad to help! 👍🙏😎
Perfect...
Thank you.
Cheers CeeGee 👍🙏😎
Hey Will great stuff! Got a question - what sort of hard drive do you use for editing 4k video? Is that Lacie I can see?
I have a Drobo 5D (thunderbolt 2) which copes ok but id like to get myself an 2TB SSD for editing and then use the drobo to archive work, its not totally required but would speed things up a bit. As you could see Ive also used the Lacie drives and they are fine but mine are again thunderbolt 2 so are showing their age a bit in terms of transfer speeds. 🙏👍😎
really helpful... Thanks
Hi Sang, glad you found it helpful! Happy editing 👍🙏😎
Great tutorial! Thank you. I feel like I’m starting to out grow IMovie. Although my YT videos are fairly simple.
Glad it was helpful! Once you get into FCPX youll never look back!
Hi! Thank you for the video! I am new here and do not know how to activate the hover over clip to be able to preview the videoclips. Perhaps you know how to fix it?
Not 100% but sounds like you need to turn on scrubbing, there is a button too right of the timeline panel. Hope that helps 👍🙏😎
excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks. Why did your viewer change from filling the screen to a letter-box size shortly into the video?
Hi Richard, I just zoomed out in the viewer using command- also when set to view fit the viewer changes depending on it’s available size which can cause it to be smaller or larger depending what windows you have open. Hope that helps
thank you
You're welcome
Will, this is brilliant & super helpful. I've used imovie for some time & have just today got the trial version of FCP. May I ask - do you have a natural 'sequel' to this vid, I mean that I now have lots of questions about the next tier of skills above these 'getting started' ones. Thank you so much. Sub'd. G
Great to hear Garry! id say there are a few vids ive done that might be helpful. organising footage folders and events is a good one to watch, as is the keyboard shortcuts video i did. many thanks
Things I've learned after watching your video:
- First time I'm touching "toggle clip display"
- "Custom settings will base it on the first clip of import": good to know.
- i for in point and o for out point
- I was today years old when I found out FCP has built-in sound effects 😅
I have one Q: I downloaded a bunch of title templates.
@@WillChidlow thanks very helpful! I watched your video on organizing, I think I just got out of that habit. I need to get back into that habit :)
Thanks for getting back to me Will. Okay so the free trial won't work for me then. Is there a way I can get a FCPX version for my 10:14.6 Mac?
Fingers crossed for you Robert, thanks for the kind words 👍🙏😎
Thanks Jim, glad you found it helpful! I use FCPX pretty much exclusively now days, I’ve got so quick that changing now really slows me down
I’m still having a hard time with the transitions. I feel like I’ve been spoiled by iMovie. When I drop down a transition it says there is not enough room.
Seems almost identical to iMovie. Should be an easy transition.
Yep, it has a lot more than imovie but the workflow is very similar
Thanks
How do you trim the video without trimming the audio?
Will, I do have a question about external drives. I have a 2 T Silicon Power Armor Drive. Can I use this drive that way? I wasn't sure if it was fast enough for that or not. I originally bought this drive to make more space available on my computer.
Hi Cory, it really depends on connection type and speed. Usb 3, usb c, thunderbolt 2 or thunderbolt 3 will all be ok in most cases but an older usb 2 or FireWire drive will likely cause you issues. Basically the faster the better. Hope that helps mate 👍🙏😎
@@WillChidlow Ok well it is usb 3.0
Should be fine then mate 👍 if it does start to struggle then using proxy media will also help 👍
@@WillChidlow Can you explain to me how that works? I have a Sony FS 5 and I am able to Do high res plus it will make proxy but no really understanding what that all means anyway
One thing I am is slow at figuring things out. It's really embarrassing but. I do manage to figure it out just takes me 4 times longer than most.
Hi Will - Where did you find the FCP X logo you used in your thumbnail?
just google image search i think
