Until a few days ago I had never heard of WML, but stumbled across an episode on youtube by accident. I've since been watching old episodes on here and it's interesting to see how much has changed in the way we speak, dress, etc in just about 50-60 years. I love hearing Anthony Perkins say "Jeepers!" in this clip... only ever heard that said in old movies lol.
It's so interesting how times have changed. I'm sure none of us would put on our "Levi's" on to deal with garbage these days! I love this trivial stuff that really shows the time gap! Thanks for this great WML segment!
Got that right. Daly certainly is amusing and he is mostly literal in his answers, but he has lead them right down the garden path -- or in this case the road to the dump. Dorothy plays so seriously and to win, so when she asks questions as loaded as 3:45 > it is a double treat.
I agree. Mr. Daly is, to be sure, a prince, but how can it be construed that the garbage is a product? She doesn't produce it; rather, she conveys it. Of course, it's just a game, right? Thanks very much for posting.
yeah. i'll never forget the time that ethel asked lucy if she REALLY expected her to ride the subway in her denims! (like gertrude stein shocking parisians in the early part of the last century by wandering around paris in sandals!!)
As with the singing garbagemen on another episode, I can't help thinking that Daly and the guest gave the panel a false lead at the start. Sure, there's a product (of sorts) involved, but that statement is usually understood by all to mean that the guest produces the product. Mrs. Yates doesn't produce garbage; she collects it from the people who really produce it. Still, it's a giggle to watch Daly field such posers as the utility or luxury of garbage.

I agree. That's one of the things I love about watching WML - seeing how times change. Glad you enjoyed this!

i wonder if the urbane and sophisticated panelists went to wash their hands after saying goodbye to the garbage woman?
The only thing worse than being a garbage collector is being a self-employed garbage collector.
Dorothy looks beautiful here.

IMO the sin here was calling garbage "useful."
