    You just solved a freaking puzzle for me as an optician! I’ve been an Optician now for about two years. I’m 23 and finally moving to a big boy job where I will have to really know my lensmeter. I haven’t had the privilege to learn on a manual as we are always so short staffed. But not at this place! I’m so excited! Thank you for solving a hard puzzle piece for my confused brain.

    I am new to use lensometer. I understand the concept of adjusting the axis wheel to make the sphere lines straight. However, I mostly get it wrong even though when I take a look, those sphere lines are still straight to me. Do you know how can I solve my problems? Thank you!

    This is awesome, I wanted a refresher for my contact lens NACOR this sunday a good reminder for when I need to read RGP/soft lenses. My current work uses an auto lensmeter and I wanted to refine my memory. I use to love the manual Lensmeter the auto ones make it easy to loose this skill!

    Hello Sir, how do you find the optical center of a plano lens?
    . Is it always at the center of the lens in a plano?.. what if the plano lens doesnt center in the lensmeter?
    What could be the problem..thank you in advance

    What equipment are u using to get the lens meter view into the video? I know they make microscope cameras but I haven't found anything similar for a lens meter yet. Work at a small to medium and growing lab. Would really Love to be able to put a manual lens meter live feed on our 65-in conference room TV to train people

      After trying MANY different things I ended up using a cellphone telescope mount. It is fussy, difficult, unreliable and near impossible to maintain a consistent focus. You aren't the first to ask - I wish I had a better answer for you. If you try pull off the soft rubber eyecup.

    I came across an older TOKYO KOGAKU lensmeter/verometer. This does not have lines but rather series of dots in a circle. I've got the sphere part right. How do i read the cylinder?

    Just curious... I'm a LDO and thinking of setting up a small edging shop for patients, and ordering uncut lenses. Have you tried the Topcon LM-8E (which I'm accustomed to), and how does it compare with the Marco? Are they very similar? I actually do like the looks of the various features on the Marco, but that bright green background on your Marco seems to bother me...?? Is the other switch setting milder? I'd prefer something closer to a neutral/black&white.. Thanks much!

      I have no experience at all with the Topcon. For basic SV finishing layout work just about anything will do. If you are familiar with the Topcon and like the Topcon I'd go ahead and get one. And - I think you will save some $$$.

    I understand every concept of the lensometer my issue is I get crisp spheres line at a certain axis, and veteran optician Bob says you're off 1/2 diopter and or off on the axis. Very rare is the case where I'm on the money. According to him. I know you said in one of your video that that lensometer is subjective but how can I be so wrong all the time? I adjust the lens ometer to my eyesight and I'm still off.

      D Sep, First thing that comes to mind is, "Do either of you wear glasses?" If, yes, I'd start there and try working with the lensmeter without wearing them. Next, I'd work with the lab and get them to mark up some lenses for you and see who is right and who is wrong. A few around +/-4 with about 2 cyl. have THEM mark an axis while in a good high end auto-lensmeter. Or, maybe you have a lensmeter gauge? I'd say the subjective amount should be closer to 0.125 and 1 or 2 degrees, not 0.5. If you can please let me know how this gets solved, it would make a great teaching tool. In fact depending on where you are we might even send you some lenses.

      This is happening to me when I'm reading my lenses. I read it as I see it on the lensometer and Bob the Optician is testing me and gives me minus points for off axis, even if it is within ANSI. "He" said "practice with your lensometer", or maybe your blocking is off.

    Is it correct to deduce that the second example +1.00 -2.50 at X degrees is actually the same as -1.5 +2.50 at X+90 degrees? And is there a customary convention to always write these using the smaller number as the spherical, or perhaps to use whichever order results in a negative cylinder, or something like that?

    How do I know when I'm on the right axis? When both sets of lines are clear?

      Please go back and watch the entire lensmeter series again. Sounds like you need to be at a lensmeter and maybe have a mentor with you. I'm sorry but not much I can say beyond what is in the video series and on the OpticianWorks website. John

    Hell guys IM staring to practice with the manual lensometer I feel a little bit confused to determine +/- cyl If I understood correctly the axis to choose is the meridian where the cylinder has no power so for instance :
    A = +3.00DSx120
    B=+1.00xDS X 30
    +3.00DS, -2.00 cyl X 30 axis
    hence im working in minus cyl
    On the other hand A = +1.00DSx120 B=+3.00xDS X 30
    +1.00DS, +2.00cyl X 120 axis
    Working in plus cyl.
    Then if I want to work again in minus cyl I have to transpond

      Sorry but, no. Lenses in series and lenses in contact are part of geometric optics and require different formulas than the single lenses in eyeglasses. You would want to look for physics and optical engineering books or sites. John

      No, that wouldn't work. You are aligning the lens to the position not the other way around. 135 is 135 is 135 you set the axis to 135 and rotate the lens to match it so that the power you need is at 135.

    I bought a Lensmeter and the two sets of mires are equal in distance apart. There are no thick and thin lines, the two sets of lines are the same size and they are always in the shape of a cross. What am I doing wrong?

      Maybe, just maybe, SWAG here that they might appear different if you have a lens with cylinder? Drop in a -5.00 with 2.00 cylinder and see what happens? Oh, wait, no, maybe you just need to put a lens in it? You might be looking at the reticle not the sphere and cylinder lines? The reticle is constant and fixed and all the lines are the same.
