- Kundun is a 1997 American epic biographical film written by Melissa Mathison and directed by Martin Scorsese. It is based on the life and writings of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, the exiled political and spiritual leader of Tibet. Tenzin Thuthob Tsarong, a grandnephew of the Dalai Lama, stars as the adult Dalai Lama, while Tencho Gyalpo, a niece of the Dalai Lama, appears as the Dalai Lama's mother.
Before the film was released, China's leaders hotly objected to Disney's plans to distribute the film, including to the point of threatening Disney's future access to China as a market. Disney's steadfastness stood in stark contrast to Universal Pictures, which had earlier "turned down the chance to distribute Kundun for fear of upsetting the Chinese." Scorsese, Mathison, and several other members of the production were banned by the Chinese government from ever entering China as a result of making the film. China retaliated by banning Disney films and pulling Disney television cartoons.
Disney apologized in 1998 for releasing the film and began to "undo the damage", eventually leading to a deal to open Shanghai Disneyland by 2016. Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner has apologized for offending Chinese sensitivities, calling the film "a stupid mistake." He went on to say, "The bad news is that the film was made; the good news is that nobody watched it. Here I want to apologize, and in the future we should prevent this sort of thing, which insults our friends, from happening."
By 2015 Scorsese's ban had apparently been lifted as he attended the premiere of his short film The Audition in Macau.
As of 2022, the movie is unavailable on U.S. streaming platforms. However, it was released on DVD and Blu-ray by Kino Lorber in 2019.
Fantastic. Thank you Martin for giving a voice to Tibet and Peace
No. Screw him for distancing himself from this movie and bowing to CCP demands.
Tibet was ruled by monks who had absolute power and 95% of the population was living as feudal serfs before it was liberated by CPC. Tibet was an unrecognized slave state that practised ritual lashings, amputations and executions by hypothermia. I've been to Tibetan camps in India and Nepal. And let me tell you: Tibetan culture is MUCH better preserved in China, and people's life conditions are incomparably more prosperous.
@@onya_marxWould you care to elaborate how is Tibetan culture better preserved in China? Which measures are taken? What is the opinion of Tibetans on this matter?
@@alexandrabiryukova8847 It's simple. Tibet under the communists: the Tibetan language gets standardized for the first time, and formerly illiterate feudal serfs finally become literate in their own language. The culture of the former ruling class and the broad masses differed greatly.
@@onya_marx It's not simple because cultural identity can't be reduced to a language. There were a lot of negative consequences for Tibet. For example most monasteries were destroyed during Cultural revolution. Only some of them were rebuilt. Others were left to ruin. And China promised that they would respect religious freedom. How often CCP considers desires and views of the Tibetan people now?
Do you mean spoken or literal Tibetan? Because their literal culture has existed for thirteen hundred years. And aren't there still problems with standartization because of dialects? What measures are taken to promote the use and development of Tibetan?
You ignored my other questions. You know, these arguments are very similar European colonial rhetoric. The conquest or, as you say, "liberation" is justified by the necessity to civilize backward barbarian people. China also had many traditions which could be considered barbaric. Should Europeans have invaded China to put an end to footbinding, for instance? Or Russia where serfdom existed till 1861? Or USA?
The system in Bhutan was similar to Tibetan and it was abolished in 50s. It happened without Chinese invasion.
“The people of Tibet have practiced non violent for thousand years.” What a lovely and peaceful country and people of this world. Whenever I watched this movie again and again, and I love this country and the people more and more.
The History of Tibet, Mongolia and China are not peaceful at all. A Chinese Emperor ended a 300 years war between Lhassa and another city for the domination of Tibet. The first Dalaï Lama was named by Gengis Khan after his invasion of Tibet. Later the Mongols have been under Tibetan rule till the Russian War end of the 18th Century.
tibet was a theocratic feudal autocracy with an absolute god-king...get your facts right please. 🙄
No hate or anything towards the Tibetans but we who lived on the fringes of the Tibetan border know how violent the Tibetans were. Kingdom of Ladakh, once a prominent power in the region was utterly destroyed because of the Tibetans, they destroyed zhangzhung before that. China taught them non-violence by showing them what violence does, otherwise it was just lip-service, nowadays Tibetans are considered peace-loving because they have no other way.
@@hellboundtruck123 I believe a little bit in both - you can find in any country issues and individuals like that so 🤷 it doesn't surprise me what you said, wrote about Tibet

they also inflicted cruel and barbarous punishment on prisoners....
True story : 2001 A Tibetan Buddhist Monk was brutally tortured in Chinese Concentration Camp. Later when the monk was released he had lost 45 kg. The monk fled Occupied Tibet & sought asylum in India, he was interviewed about his experience inside Chinese Torture camp. The monk replied “ in few occasions he faced danger”. Reporter asked “ what danger ? ”. The monk replied “ The danger of losing my compassion towards the Chinese”.
This is the most incredible movie I have seen about His Holiness and Tibet. I sincerely have no words.
same here 🙏
Holy is a term only appropriate for praising God. It should never be cheapened using it to glorify a pedophile that tells a little boy to suck his tongue, look it up. He was sorry he got caught though.
" this is the most incredible movie i have seen. ". Those Are " words"
One of the most beautiful films ever made: I saw it on the big screen when it came out (apparently a rarity): the depth and profundity of an indigenous people grounded in compassion, Buddhism, and Bon, from shamans to Enlightened Lamas, from farmers to servants, it's a culture the West can hardly fathom yet somehow Martin Scorsese's sensitive artist eye (incredible camera angles and such sensitivity to the humans in front of the lens) and Melissa Mathison's incredible script of intelligence and penetrating insight captures the miracle of Tibet and the horror of their Chinese overloads -- for China to try and erase what it has done must be countered by free-thinking people, esp. those of us who have benefited greatly from the three great jewels bequeathed to us from Tibet: the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha yet as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama bravely and wisely shows us only compassion will heal and righten the wounds of the past as we continue to work for a brighter future... this should be streamed worldwide, thank you for posting this here and may it ever be so! Ho!
Thanks you are like a light an BEACON.Your always going to have to write these words.many need to see.learn.

Funny that ppl found out this film because China and Disney banning it. Brilliant film kundun loved it. Good fellows.
they really did? I was afraid so. I cannot find the movie on any streaming platform, at least not in Germany. This is one of my favourite movies but I no longer own the DVD. I am so glad it is still viewable here. But disney banning it is just sad and ridiculous.
Disney en China sukken de p*k van de duvel.
@@Brettkatze Disney is not able to ban anything anywhere. They can refuse to distribute films anywhere they want, but that's an entirely different thing.
Thank you for posting this wonderful movie and thank you Martin Scorsese for making it. It is beautiful.
im so happy to see this movie posted. it got a limited release and hushed by the chinese. disney took thier name off it out of fear.
🤣🤣
Money over honor. With Disney this is the norm.
I love when simply watching a movie is an act of defiance against a crooked power structure.
It's rather an act of illusion 😅
@@fussypeg8561 Kundun is banned in China, and the Chinese government has gone to some lengths to censor it in the US
What a memorable historical of the Tibetan people and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The story of how this movie was banned and hidden from view speaks of what comes with a dictatorship. How interesting we are able to watch this movie and speculate on how the Tibetan people we lost under the crush of their victors. A deep thanks to all who made this movie and have shared it with us today. And to you, your Holiness, as you celebrate yet another birthday, May you be in good health, May you know peace.
He's a scumbag. Tibet was a feudal society of serfs. China changed that

I remember watching this back in the late 90's. Great to see it again.
This is what I’ve been searching for months and couldn’t find it. Thank you for sharing
Great movie! It should be re-released again to the theatres. God bless Tibet. God bless the Dali Lama.
It's both sad and hilarious that Disney would never release a movie like this nowadays. They're too desperate for Chinese money.
And that's sad.
Not to fret. There was plenty of NED and AID money behind this fantasy.

@@stickemuppunkitsthefunlovi4733Watch the reading of the Michael Parenti exposé I posted 2 hours ago. The movie was pure propaganda.
indeed. the description made me absolutely sick
Thank you for having the courage to post this amazing work of art.
America was founded on the concept of free speech. We must be open to criticism of our past actions as a country. Surely the Chinese government can accept criticism as well.
Nnnnnope.
Thin-skinned authoritarians and exploiters.
Thank you for posting that film I couldn't find it, thank you bless you all love to you all and compassion to all human beings.
So glad to find this here on RUclips, as Netflix has zero movies on Buddhism. In all fairness, 'Seven Years in Tibet' is currently streamable on Netflix, but not one movie or documentary dealing with the Buddha or Buddhism.
I am profoundly moved by the story of the Dalai Lama and so impressed by the way Martin Scorsese tells that story. It is truly a masterpiece and a beautiful depiction of holiness in the flesh.
Another beautiful rendition by the one and only Scorsese 🕉🙏🕊
Scorsese doesn’t make powerful films for Oscars. Hollywood does not like him. I love ❤️ his films.
Thank you for providing this film. I am heartfelt touched to see peaceful people has to deal with bad intentions. May every being be liberated from wrong-doing and see their true selves in goodness. May good intention flows in us.

A great movie about an extraordinary man and an extraordinary journey. Not yet finished.....
Just a reminder thay Disney hid this movie to prevent it's relationship with the Chinese Government falling apart.

In a vidro the Dalai Lama said ,"First I lost my freedom as a child. Then I lost my country at....age."
One of Martin's finest works of art. Powerful and beautiful. Strive on with peace and heart.
Very powerful film telling it how it really happened. Tibet will be free.
I wonder from what Western country you are
Here's hoping this upload stays up. This film has been banned in so many places and is impossible to find legally online in 2024. Keep circulating the tapes.
This movie is fucking amazing, as a long time Scorcese fan I cannot believe I missed this until now. It has been buried by Disney and China very deep.
I hope the rituals and culture of Tibet are depicted accurately, as there is very little of it to see now because of Chinese suppression.
Share this with everyone you know, even if they don't like movies, this needs to be more well known.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama could not have asked for a greater filmmaker to tell his story. This is a masterpiece.
A narrative voiceover by the 14th Dalai Lama would have been terrific.
Thank you for posting it. The quality is excellent and am grateful for letting me experience my ancestors tribulations.
You're Tibetan? I'd love to see your 23&me results
Beautiful people beautiful traditions. I hope their country will be free someday.
@stj971 Sadly, even the dalai lama has changed his position to accepting tibet as chinese.
Roger Deakins, Philip Glass & Scorcese, that's more than enough to make me happy! Sadly fear of upsetting Chinese 'sensitivities' mean it never got released properly.
Shame on all those who self-censor. Especially for money; Disney got to open Disneyland Shanghai after apologising for this movie.
thank you so much for posting this, can't find it/buy in anywhere. i have seen this movie so many times and it still has so much to teach us.

I saw this film a long time ago. Thank you so much for posting. It is time to see it again. And for the new generation which has not seen it to watch for the first time, although I don’t understand why RUclips Movies won’t offer it.
I just realized there is no emoji for the Tibet flag either.
Well, MAKE ONE! I don't know how, or I would.
Oh...it's going to be another "it exists, but the FCFCFP won't stand for it, so it doesn't show up in new releases," isn't it?

Hey, wait...I found out how to make one.
But I need server control on Discord to post it, which won't be for another week yet. :-C

When Chairman Mao told His Holiness that religion is poison, he must have had a sudden and horrifying realization of the depth of the man’s perversity and shallowness. It must have been such a sickening feeling.

At 1:36:24, with Mao walking in back of the Dalai Lama, the audience can’t help but feel the intimidation. There’s something eerie and an unsettling feeling when watching it. The score goes with it also. And the fact that they have Mao looking much taller and towering over the young Dalai Lama is also a bit scary, I don’t believe Mao was that much taller than the Dalai Lama, I’m sure this was a casting choice and used metaphorically to show that power dynamic and all the imbalance that went with it. This is an amazing film, very well made and very powerful! It also shows Scorsese’s versatility, this a masterpiece, but very different to the director’s other work and its style. One would not guess that this is a Scorsese film, however it’s just as excellent as his other work.
Thank you for posting this.
"Divide and conquer" was a trick by the West after 500 years of colonization. Tibet was part of China since the Yuan Dynasty (1240-1354) and then the Qing Dynasty until 1911. Tibet sought independence only for 30 years (!921-1951), while China dealt with the warlords and the Japanese imperial invaders. The West always ignores others' history (because it had a horrible history) and uses gaslighting tricks to make others focus only on the 30 years rather than the 900 years of history. This is just part of the colonial narratives the West has created to demonize their ideological "enemies" IN THE NAME OF TIBETANS. They never allow anyone who is different than them to unite, proper, and thrive.
😅😅
It's Dalai Lama's birthday friend!.. 🎂 peopleAre celebrating cheers!.. 🥳🥳
Your rambling makes my head hurt. Your anti West talk is irrelevant as all nations have conducted this so called “divide and conquer” attitude. Your babbling is nonsensical

Holiness, wisdom and purity are universally recognized and sought by all faiths. The unholy seek power, wealth and dominence. The unholy are weak and thus foreced by their weakness to resort to violence and deprivation to dominate those they rule. Peacemakers are the ultimate lasting rulers. As Earthlings we have not yet entered the age of Peacemakers. Pray for their arrivals.
