One of the scenes that I really disliked in Superman 4 was when Lex Luthor impersonated a USAF 5 Star General to command a missile launching! Even for a fictional movie, that just doesn't work. The 5 star general rank (although still listed for use) has not been used actively since the 1950s. There has only been ONE USAF 5 star general ever in USA history, and General Henry Arnold started as US Army general before being made the commanding USAF general. Thus, the USA Armed Forces would clearly KNOW if they had a new 5 star general. And ANY nuclear missile launch still has to be cleared by the President. So Luthor impersonating a USAF 5 star general is not just unreal and impossible, it doesn't even make sense. Hence, that scene cost the movie another minus 10 points out of a 100 score.

Well, it did still lose money, because when it comes to movies, you have to earn 2.5 times the initial production budget back to break even. $17mil was the initial production budget, but then comes marketing, distribution, and sometimes theaters take a percentage of the earnings. I like Superman 4. It has the theme of getting rid of nuclear weapons. A wiser theme than most films have. Many nuclear experts (e.g. the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists) say that the risk of nuclear war now is higher than it was during the Cold War.

At the time I was so young that I didn't notice how "bad" it was, and even to this day, it's a film of my childhood and my brother and I LOVED the Superman movies, so despite the fact that I can see all these things NOW, I honestly don't care. To me it's still an enjoyable watch and while not as good as the first 2, I've seen WAY worse and to this day this is still a fun movie for me ❤

BTW, the mostly unanticipated movie came already Joker 2 and now, it TANKED the box office already. The joke’s on WB and David Z, too. Yikes.

I remember dragging my mom to this when I was a little kid on opening day. I'm pretty sure we were the only people in the theater. I didn't hate it back then, as I was just happy to see a Superman movie in a theater. But after seeing it again as a teenager, I could not wrap my head around how terrible the whole thing was. Learning about how Cannon basically blew through most of their money on Masters of the Universe (an equally terrible film), it's no wonder A Quest for Peace was doomed to fail. I don't think it would have been a good movie, had the budget not been halved, but it might have had a chance of being tolerable. As is, it's a "so bad, you might chuckle a few times" kind of movie. At least Christopher Reeve was still the best Superman, even in the worst possible movie.

Superman 3 was way worse, it was more of a Leslie Nielsen film then anything else. 4 had its issues do to Cannon Group screwing over not only Christopher Reeve's story, but his passion project. Still, despite its flaws I enjoyed and Nuclear Man is my all time favorite Superman villain. Sure he had a horrible weakness, but without it Supes would never have been able to beat him. And as far as I know Nuclear Man is the only live action villain to beat arguably the strongest Supes twice alone. First time nearly killing him, and he was just having fun and if it wasn't for that crystal he'd be dead. The second time, he buried Supes alive in the freaking Moon. I really hope they release a remastered version one.

    What did in Superman IV?
    1. Slashed budget.
    2. Not using a different villain from the source material. Lex Luthor teaming with another villain? Ok, but no Parasite, Bizarro, Metallo, Toyman, Prankster or... Brainiac?
    3. No attention to detail, most evident in visuals.
    4. Rehashing some stuff from the 1st 2 movies.
    5. Nuclear Man lands in Metropolis to capture Lacy, Superman confronts him, but lets him start messing things up!?!? And pleads with a retread line from Superman II!??!?
However, this IS the Superman movie that helped get me into the character (in my defense, the 1st 3 Superman movies were rented out from Blockbuster).

lol strangely enough, I liked Superman IV...not a lot, but I didn't find it terrible. Then again I was a kid so I liked any kind of movie like this. I must have re-watched it over a dozen times (because we had it on Beta), but re-watching it as an adult, I can better understand where everybody is coming from. As for Canon, I liked Masters of the Universe better now than as a kid. I was severely disappointed in my youth, simply because it missed a lot of what the animated series presented, but I also appreciated how they took it a little more seriously. I hated the fact they went to Earth though...what a lame/cheap approach. Anyway, this is supposed to be about Superman lol...ah well, rest in peace Mr. Reeve. You're still the best Superman.

It definitely has its flaws (which I attribute mostly due to obvious budgetary issues), and admittedly, I notice them A LOT more as an adult than I did as a kid. That said, as a kid (and still now, really), I always saw it as an adequate sequel, and I thought this new villain was actually pretty cool. I definitely liked it better than Supergirl, and to be honest, better than Superman returns. Like, yeah... I'd absolutely watch (and enjoy) IV again before either of those.

What I find crazy is that they wanted to use the delete scenes from 4 as the basic for 5, write new scenes and a story around those. That is the epitome of cheap - these scenes are not good enough for this film but don't get rid of them, we will use them in the next one 😂
To me, this movie was always going to fail and it is just a question of did the slashed budget ruin the story or was the story so bad that even a decent budget wouldn't have saved it. I imagine there is stuff they cut because of the low budget but the story is what it is and I don't think it was going to be good even with a better budget. Sure it wouldn't have looked as cheap with proper effects and such but good icing doesn't fix and under baked cake.
